Foundr Magazine Podcast with Nathan Chan

Sarah Lee went from cold-emailing 700 journalists by hand and sleeping two hours a night to building Glow Recipe into a nine-figure global skincare brand inside Sephora. And she did it without raising venture capital. In this interview, the co-founder of Glow Recipe breaks down how a $50,000 bootstrapped Korean beauty curation site turned into one of the most recognisable modern skincare brands in the world — including how they broke even in just three months, why they walked away from millions to stay in control, and the exact moment they knew it was time to build their own products. From getting on Shark Tank in year one to launching their first SKU with nothing but a white jar and an iPad mockup, this episode is a masterclass in brand building, retail strategy, and founder-led execution. What you'll learn in this interview: • How Glow Recipe broke even in just 3 months with a $50K bootstrap • Why Sarah and Christine personally cold-emailed 700+ press contacts • The real economics of starting as a curated marketplace vs owning the brand • How they validated product demand before manufacturing anything • What it took to pitch Sephora with no finished product • Why Glow Recipe walked away from millions in potential funding • Lessons from Shark Tank — and what didn't make it on TV • How Korean beauty education became their unfair advantage • The biggest mistakes founders make when launching beauty products • How Glow Recipe scaled from curation to a nine-figure product brand By the end of this episode, you'll understand how to validate demand early, build leverage without capital, and turn brand education into long-term defensibility — even in one of the most competitive categories in ecommerce. If you're building a product brand, thinking about retail expansion, or deciding whether to raise capital or stay bootstrapped, this conversation will fundamentally change how you think about control, growth, and timing. West Coast correspondent Lexy Lebsack is joined by senior reporter Emily Jensen to discuss this week's news, starting with a buzzy new lawsuit that could impact the future of beauty dupes. They discuss Glow Recipe's new lawsuit against MCo Beauty for allegedly copying one of its hero products, $36 Watermelon Glow Dew Drops, with MCo's $11.99 Hydrate & Glow Ultra-Dew Serum. Jensen and Lebsack also discuss L'Oréal Group's latest acquisition of the British skin-care brand Medik8. Announced this week, the conglomerate acquired a majority stake in the brand, which launched stateside in 2023, to bolster its luxury and dermatological beauty division. The line is omnichannel, doctor-founded and led, results-based, rooted in clinical science, and priced under its competitors — a cocktail of the top attributes many investment firms and conglomerates are looking for today. And finally, Drybar founder Alli Webb is back with a new hair brand (16:27) — but it's not what you think. Glossy Pop senior reporter Sara Spruch-Feiner sat down with Webb to learn about the line's origin story and launch.

This visually stunning film, accompanied by J-Lo's latest album, weaves together the threads of her personal life in a musical journey of love and self-discovery. From dreamlike sequences to unexpected Zodiac council cameos, there's something for everyone in this captivating tale. I also share my experience recording with Brit Madrid for her show. Brit is a television producer, host, and podcaster known for her sparkling presence on BZenTV. Brit also delves into the mystical realms of astrology and tarot on her popular podcast, ‘In the Cards & Stars,' where she offers cosmic guidance and celebrity chart analyses. Next, we'll discuss some standout product launches and mailers, including the modern twist on masculinity with "Ken" the Fragrance by DefineMe Creative Studio, the game-changing multi-chrome eyeshadows from Make Beauty, and Glow Recipe's commitment to sustainability with their refillable moisturizers. From building a routine for Generation Z to preventing future skin concerns for Millennials, correcting visible changes for Generation X, and enhancing overall skin health for Baby Boomers, there's something for every age group to learn and incorporate into their skincare routine. Christine Chang recalls the moment in the back seat of a cab, heading across Manhattan to her next appointment. She and her cofounder, Sarah Lee, finally had to have a tough conversation about the future of their beauty business Glow Recipe. The pair had originally built a successful business focused on curating Korean beauty products produced by other manufacturers. A business that had generated a significant customer following and an engaged fan base through savvy use of social media. A business that generated the majority of Glow Recipe's revenue, which was reported to be $1 million in their first year of business and growing triple digits year over year. But the other 10% of their revenue was calling to them. That was the revenue that began to grow in 2017 after Glow Recipe started its own in-house brand of beauty products. And there Chang and Lee sat, in the back of a cab in early 2019.“As a growing but small team, we were being pulled in multiple directions by having to manage a rapidly growing in-house brand and another business vertical together," Chang, BSBA 2004, recalled. “We talked seriously about whether this was sustainable. Five years from now, what will we wish we'd done? By the end of that cab ride, we had aligned.”The curation business had to go. Glow Recipe would be all-in with its in-house brand of products. People would have to be let go. Inventory had to be shed. Their online community of fans and customers—invested in one version of Glow Recipe—would have to be invited along for a difficult transition.Skincare brands are typically known to position their brands as either serious and clinically efficacious or whimsical and fun. Glow Recipe's mission was to combine both worlds into a line of products that delivered results but were also sensorial, joyful and approachable.“It was a massive pivot to shut down the curated business,” Chang said. “As the brand grew, we realized we couldn't do both.” Two years later, the pivot paid off as Chang and Lee's company continued an explosive growth trend.RELATED LINKSThe Glow Recipe websiteElanor Williams' page on the WashU Olin Business School siteChristine Chang's Instagram pageGlow Recipe on InstagramCNBC reports on the Glow Recipe storyA report by Katie Couric Media on Glow RecipeCREDITSThis podcast is a production of Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. If you are one of Mikayla Nogueira's 14.6 million TikTok followers, then you already know that one of the app's biggest beauty influencers is getting married this weekend. But what you may not know is that she custom-created the lipstick and liner for her big day, with E.l.f. Cosmetics. The color resulting from the collaboration, which launched on Thursday, is cheekily named “Til Death Do Us Paht,” a reference to Nogueira's famous Boston accent. Nogueira had partnered with E.l.f. before, and, as she struggled to find a lipstick she deemed perfect for her wedding day, she decided to reach out to the brand and ask if they'd like to work on one collaboratively. Nogueira has been creating content on the app since the early days of Covid. Before becoming a full-time creator, she worked at Ulta Beauty. She has done product collaborations with brands including the indie makeup brand Glamlite and skin-care brand Glow Recipe, and has partnered on sponsored posts for brands including Charlotte Tilbury, L'Oréal, Maybelline, Rael and RoC. In an April 2022 Glossy story, we reported on Nogueira's ability to sell out a beauty product or catapult it into virality. In late January, Nogueira was at the center of a TikTok controversy around a L'Oréal mascara ad she posted: She was accused of wearing false lashes in the “after” footage demonstrating the mascara's results. After taking a few days off, Nogueira's next video started with, “I'm sure we all know why we've all gathered here today. … It's the month of love, bitches.” She never addressed the criticism further. In the monthly Glossy Pop episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Nogueira speaks to the harsh realities of being an influencer with nearly 15 million sets of eyes on her, the pros and cons of going viral (and that ubiquitous TikTok sound of her saying Kim Kardashian's name), and the creation of her wedding-day lipstick.

You may have seen my work on your Hollister t-shirt or your nephew's Gymboree pajamas. Eventually, I began freelancing and lending my skills to a wider range of clients like Edition Hotels and Glow Recipe. I might have drawn on your Stuart Weitzman shoes or personalized artwork for you at Cartier.I was born in Seoul, but adopted when I was three months old. Growing up, I didn't have a lot of exposure to Korean culture (or, really any Asian culture for that matter.)In college, I spent nine months in Seoul at EWHA Women's University. I made lifelong friends and travel back to Korea often. My parents came with me on my most recent trip. Being part of their first experience in my birth country (while I was pregnant!) was incredibly special.Exposing my son to Korean was important from the beginning. But, the more I tried to find resources, the more frustrated I became. What little I could find was mostly for native speakers (and usually included an expensive import mark-up.)Where were the books and activities for Korean-Americans, adoptees like me, or families with mixed backgrounds?!(Source: TigerboomCreative.com)Connect with Katie:Web: TigerboomCreative.comPersonal: https://katiecadamatre.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tigerboomcreativeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cadamatre///Meet your co-hosts of the Korean American Parenting Podcast!Dr. Jang Cho is a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist.
