Nestled in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, Kristine and Addison's journey began with a shared love for outdoor activities – whether it was engaging in spirited games of pickleball, strolling through the charming streets of Paris, or simply savoring a cocktail on their favorite patio. In their pursuit of the perfect ensemble for sun-soaked adventures with friends, Kristine and Addison encountered a gap in the market. Chris Shaffer joined the discussion, bringing research insights about sunscreen ingredients and their impact on humans and the environment. (00:04:00) Vinnie discussed his long-standing concerns about chemical sunscreens, particularly oxybenzone and avobenzone. Chris provided research findings about these chemicals' effects on coral reefs and human health, recommending zinc oxide as a safer alternative. (00:09:00) Many of the chemicals in some sunscreens are hormone disruptors. (00:10:00) Aerosol versions of sunscreens are even more concern. (00:14:00) Mineral sunscreens such as zinc oxide can be good, but titanium dioxide can be a concern. (00:15:00) Titanium dioxide is used in food and other products to brighten and whiten the product. Even in small particles, titanium dioxide can cause cancers. (00:17:00) Zinc oxide is the best bet. When do you need to apply sunscreen? (00:21:50) Reapply every couple of hours, at least. Chris presented research showing that dietary factors like beta carotene, lycopene, and vitamins C and E can enhance skin protection from UV damage. Vinnie shared anecdotal evidence about dietary changes affecting sunburn susceptibility. (00:23:41) They discussed various clothing brands and products that offer UV protection, including Tilley hats, Coolibar shirts, and ExOfficio clothing. In this episode, Simone welcomes skincare expert Sylvia Winans to discuss the often-overlooked impact of natural plant oils on skin health and sun protection. Sylvia shares her inspiring journey, which began during her pregnancy when she sought holistic alternatives to chemical sunscreens. Through her research, she discovered the powerful photoprotective properties of various plant-derived compounds, leading to the creation of her innovative product, Quantum Pie.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Exposure to blue light from devices and artificial lighting can damage the skin by causing oxidative stress, affecting collagen and elastin, which are crucial for maintaining skin structure and elasticity. Plant-derived oils and compounds, such as carotenoids and astaxanthin, not only provide sun protection but also nourish the skin, enhance its defense mechanisms, and support cellular health, making them a holistic alternative to chemical sunscreens. The effectiveness of natural skincare products lies in the synergy of various phytochemicals. These compounds work together to regenerate each other and provide comprehensive protection and nourishment to the skin. Diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), commonly found in processed seed oils, can lead to chronic inflammation and deplete antioxidants in the body, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Emphasizing the body's natural processes, the development of products like Quantum Pie aligns with the philosophy of using nature's wisdom to protect and heal the skin, rather than relying on synthetic chemicals that may disrupt the body's functions. BEST MOMENTS "When we are exposed to these blue light devices, the light emitted from them is damaging our skin." "Plants are really nature's experts in sun protection. They produce thousands of chemicals to support themselves and reduce sun damage." "The difference between chemical sunscreens is that they only have this one function to stop the UVA or UVB rays from penetrating our skin." "When we eat a diet rich in carotenoids, our bodies concentrate carotenoids in the most sun-exposed tissues." "Chronic inflammation in the fat cells of your skin depletes the antioxidants in our blood." Tina and Leah take on some TikTok misconceptions, including influencers' anti-sunscreen rants, head-on (wearing a wide-brimmed hat, of course).  The sun is good. The sun is bad. The sun will give you cancer, no wait, it will protect you from cancers. As is often the case, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Tune in for a factual discussion about sun exposure, tanning, and the difference between UVA and UVB rays on your skin. We talk sunscreens, sun blockers, and why there is so much darn skin cancer down under! (Not THAT down under! We mean Australia/New Zealand). In this week's podcast episode, Dr. Mina and Dr. Sheilagh Maguiness debunk six common myths about pediatric skincare. They discuss the importance of frequent bathing for newborns and children with sensitive skin, emphasizing the need to use mild cleansers and moisturizers to maintain the skin barrier. They also address the misconception that products labeled for babies are always better, highlighting the importance of choosing fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options.  Key Takeaways: - Frequent bathing with mild cleansers and immediate moisturization is beneficial for newborns and children with sensitive skin. - Eczema is caused by a deficiency in the skin barrier protein, not by food allergies. - Products labeled for babies are not always better; it is important to choose fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options. - Avoiding restrictive diets and introducing allergenic foods early can help prevent food allergies in children. - Kids need sunscreen and sun protection from an early age, and mineral-based sunscreens are recommended. - Tweens and teens should have a basic skincare routine, but excessive products and harsh ingredients are unnecessary and can harm the skin. - Natural skincare products are not always best for the skin, as they can contain irritants and allergens. If you're someone who values your skin's health, but loves soaking up the sun's warmth, then UPF clothing might just be what you need! UPF stands for ‘ultraviolet protective factor,' and it's a rating system designed for fabrics and clothing, much like SPF (sun protection factor) is for sunscreen. As a dermatologist, I can't stress enough the importance of sun protection. Over the years, I've seen countless cases of skin damage that could have been prevented with proper UV protection. That's why I'm such a huge advocate for UPF clothing. It simplifies sun protection and makes it accessible for everyone! Tune in to this week's podcast episode with Dr. Virginia Reeder, where we discuss why sun protection matters, whether sunscreen alone is sufficient, and how to determine if your clothing offers adequate sun protection! Key Takeaways: UPF clothing provides superior sun protection compared to regular clothing. The UPF rating system indicates the level of sun protection provided by clothing. Wearing long sleeves and pants in the summer can be comfortable and beneficial for sun protection. There has been a cultural shift towards tanning, but it is important to prioritize sun protection. Be smart about sun exposure to prevent skin damage and skin cancer. Use sunscreen with a broad spectrum and reapply it regularly. Seek shade and physically cover up with clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
