Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the messy international outlook continues but so far the changes are more in prospect than real.First however, this will be a big week of data and policy releases. Not only will Australia review its policy rate tomorrow (a -25 bps cut is anticipated taking their cash rate target to 4.10%), our own RBNZ has its first monetary policy review of 2025 and it is widely expected they will deliver a -50 bps cut to 3.75%. China also reviews rates this week on Thursday, but no change is expected from them.On Wednesday, there is another full dairy auction.Canada and Japan will release January CPI data. And there will be many January PMI releases this week.In data out over the weekend from China, banks lent a record +¥5.22 tln in new loans in January, far above the +¥990 bln in December and easily beating forecasts of +¥800 bln. It is a spectacular show of support by banks for the push by Beijing to juice up its economy via more debt.Foreign direct investment in China plunged -99% over the past three years, Chinese government data shows, as their economic slowdown and concerns about their 'everything is national security' approach drove investors away. China only recorded a net inflow in 2024 of +US$4.5 bln and that is their lowest in more than 30 years. In two of the four quarters of 2024 there was in fact a net outflow.Up from +1.8% in 2023, Singapore's economy grew +4.4% in 2024 on the back of stronger-than-expected rebounds in exports and tourism. This was an upward revision from the preliminary +4.0% rate reported by them earlier. By itself, Singapore's Q4 rose at a +5.0% rate.Malaysia downgraded its growth in its Q4-2024 update to +5.0% from a year ago. This was due to weak progress in Q4 from Q3.In the US, retail sales were +4.2% higher in January from a year ago, a slightly slower pace than in December (+4.4%). This official data backs up the Redbook survey we report weekly. But we should note that the good January data came despite a sharpish fall-off in car sales in the month. That fall-off contributed to seasonally adjusted retreat in January from December and one that was notably more than expected.Business inventory data out for December actually shows lower levels, and their inventory-to-sales ratio improved unexpectedly. This shift might be due to public-policy uncertainty around tariffs. With inventories lower than expected, it therefore won't be a surprise to know that US industrial production in January rose on a year-on-year basis, and by more than expected. But the January rise from December wasn't as strong. But at least it was a riseIt is Presidents Day in the US on Monday (tomorrow NZT), a Federal holiday, but only inconsistently observed by business and many states.Across the border, Canada said its manufacturing sales rose, and for a third consecutive month in December.Canada also released its Q4-2024 senior loan officer survey which revealed a sharpish tightening in credit conditions in the period. The UST 10yr yield is at 4.48%, unchanged from Saturday at this time. The price of gold will start today at just under US$2882/oz and down -US$6 from Saturday.Oil prices are down -50 USc at just over US$70.50/bbl in the US and the international Brent price is still just under US$75/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now at 57.4 USc and unchanged from Saturday. Against the Aussie we are also unchanged at 90.2 AUc. Against the euro we are still at 54.6 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today just under 67.3, unchanged from Saturday but its highest since Christmas Eve.The bitcoin price starts today at US$97,094 and down -1.6% from this time Saturday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been low at +/- 0.6%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

At what cost revolution? In Fabienne Josaphat's new novel, “Kingdom of No Tomorrow,” 20-year-old Nettie Boileau trades the turmoil of Duvalier's Haiti for the tumult of 1960s America. Settling with her aunt in Oakland, she is drawn to the social programs spearheaded by the burgeoning Black Panther Party. But her focus on healing and public health is soon subsumed by the revolution and her passionate relationship with Black Panther leader Melvin Mosley. Josaphat drew on her own family's history for insight into the activism of the Panthers. Her father, an attorney, was imprisoned during Francois Duvalier's reign in Haiti. And she remembers reading her father's books as a child, biographies and memoirs of leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. “I remember starting to do my research about the Black Panthers and thinking to myself, ‘I think I know about this already but I don't know how. Where did I learn this?'” she tells Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas. “And then I realized, it was probably me going through [my father's] books.”Josaphat brings the gift of those books full circle with her new novel as she brings the inner workings of the Black Panthers to fresh light, including how the fight for social justice didn't always mean equal rights for women. Guest: Fabienne Josaphat was born and raised in Haiti. Her new novel “Kingdom of No Tomorrow” was awarded the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction in 2023. In Fabienne Josaphat's latest novel, a young woman named Nettie leaves Haiti for the United States. Set in the 1960s, Kingdom of No Tomorrow follows Nettie as she joins the Black Panther Party's free health clinics in Oakland, California, and falls in love with a party defense captain. In her research for the novel, Josaphat found deep resonances between Haiti's revolutionary history and the Black Panther movement. In today's episode, she speaks with NPR's Ari Shapiro about her research, the Black Panthers' Free Breakfast for School Children Program, and how her book might fit into the broader understanding of the party. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

PEN/Bellwether winner Fabienne Josaphat spoke with me about being born into storytelling, writing socially engaged fiction, and the revolution and injustice at the center of her new novel KINGDOM OF NO TOMORROW. Fabienne Josaphat was born and raised in Haiti, and graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. Her sophomore novel KINGDOM OF NO TOMORROW was the 2023 winner of the PEN / Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. Barbara Kingsolver established the biennial prize in 2000 to highlight previously unpublished works of fiction that addressed issues of social justice. Barbara Kingsolver, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Demon Copperhead, said of the book, "This beautifully convincing slice of history is powered not just by good research, but by lots of suspense, compelling characters, and understated political themes that …. bring the fierce vision of the Black Panthers to new generations of readers, adding some stunning context to the modern Black Lives Matter movement." In addition to fiction, Josaphat writes non-fiction, screenplays, and is an anthologized poet. Her work has been featured in The African American Review, The Washington Post, Teen Vogue, The Master's Review, Grist Journal, and many others. Diverse Voices Book Review host interviewed Fabienne Josephat, author of Kingdom of No Tomorrow. Kingdom of No Tomorrow is a historical novel that delves into the Black Panther Party from 1968 to 1969 through the perspective of protagonist Nettie Boileau. She volunteers at the Black Panthers' Free Health Clinics in Oakland and develops a romantic relationship with Melvin Mosley, a defense captain in the Black Panther Party. Their move to Chicago to assist in founding the Illinois chapter exposes them to J. Edgar Hoover's secret operations against civil rights activists. In the interview, Josephat discusses her journey in writing her second novel, her trepidation in tackling such a sensitive subject, and the importance of accuracy and dignity in portraying the Black Panthers. The novel blends historical events with fictional characters, emphasizing the Black Panthers' community programs and the internal conflicts within the movement.Fabienne Josaphat was born and raised in Haiti, and graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University. Her first novel, Dancing in the Baron's Shadow, published with Unnamed Press, Edwidge Danticat said, “Filled with life, suspense, and humor, this powerful first novel is an irresistible read about the nature of good and evil, terror and injustice, and ultimately triumph and love.” In addition to fiction, Josaphat writes non-fiction and poetry, as well as screenplays. Key Events of Episode 2 The Franny's Girl vs. Mimi's Girl Narrative The episode begins highlighting the traditional rivalry between Franny's and Mimi's. We see how being a Franny's girl signifies being on the "right" side while being a Mimi's girl denotes the opposite. This rivalry not only introduces tension but offers depth to the backstories of characters like Nancy and Gus. Nancy and Frank Jr.'s Dynamic Nancy struggles with her identity after the loss of her husband, Frank. It's heartbreaking to witness how Frank Jr. treats her, mirroring behaviors that might have been modeled by his father. The episode delves deeper into Nancy's past, showing her sacrifices and longing for validation from her son. The Sabrina and Amanda Facade Sabrina, a master manipulator, manipulates Amanda into revealing sensitive information about Mae's past working at Donkey's. This not only fuels the drama but also underscores Sabrina's sneaky nature, making her a complex yet enjoyable character to watch. Media Training Drama
Gurdip and Justin delve into the landmark 1960 recording sessions in which Elvis declared that he was indeed back, both literally from the Army as well as on top of the charts, with the sessions giving him three massive US number one hits in "Stuck On You," "It's Now or Never" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" As many of our listeners know, Elvis is Back is perhaps Gurdip's favorite Elvis album ever, and these are his favorite sessions, so he's thrilled to bits. Armed with the "Elvis is Back Sessions" FTD, we explore how Elvis had evolved as an entertainer in the two years since his last sessions in Nashville and appraise the choice of material, from covers/reworkings of existing songs that he'd been practicing at home, such as "Soldier Boy," "Like A Baby" and "There's No Tomorrow" as well as wholly new songs written expressly for him, like Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman's first song for him "A Mess of Blues," and, of course, the stunning doo-wop ballad "Fame and Fortune." Part 1 covers the March session and the first half of the April session, ending with "It's Now or Never." Part 2 will cover the rest of the April session, plus Song of the Week with Ryan! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

Eric Iberg and Phil Casabon giving flowers to Corey Vanular He's the original SuperUnknown - the underdog story starts here. The first, ever, to stomp the most coveted rail trick in the game on video - 270 on pretzel. His Long Story Short segment left a lasting impression on all eyes who witnessed - style's timeless. He disappeared for a few yearz and came back for an encore like Gandalf the white - shining more bright than ever before in ‘No Tomorrow'. His skiing style, although uniquely his, reminds me of what a fusion between Mickael Deschenaux and David Crichton would be - heavenly. Like Goku + Vegeta = Gogeta of skiing. CPAC'S Matt Schlapp says liberals call Republicans “threats to democracy” yet they're the ones who want to keep Donald Trump off the ballot. It's now up to the Supreme Court and should be a 9-0 decision because it has nothing to do with a crime. Schlapp says the only way Joe Biden can win is to keep Trump off the ballot in a few states. Several states are now completely voting by mail: Washington, Colorado even Utah and as soon as you do that, you lose the states. Colorado for example has no statewide-elected Republicans and are now trying to nullify the Constitution by keeping Trump off the ballot. There was nothing in the McConnell/Langford bill that would have closed any portion of the border. It was going to facilitate and mainstream more illegals into towns and cities all over America giving them more money to do this. It was a cynical ploy and it backfired. The hardcore Ukraine aid people want to do everything they can to keep this war going. Last year's CPAC poll showed 75% of the audience did not want another penny sent to Ukraine. Schlapp is against giving money to a president who is responsible for the conflict in the first place. Failing to impeach Mayorkas was a flop and Schlapp hopes they try again. He thinks Republicans' one seat majority will grow if people see them fight. It will shrink if people view them as the white flag party. Schlapp says Trump is not going to get 100% support from the Republican Party but we're seeing Black and Hispanic voters and nontraditional Republican voters flocking to Donald Trump because they like what the man stands for and what he did in office. The university now faces a huge deficit and major cuts. It's a problem facing many major public universities, as WSJ's Melissa Korn explains.
