Streaming giants Spotify and SoundCloud were both founded in Stockholm, and over the past two decades the Swedish capital has developed a reputation as a European hub for companies blending music and innovation. So why does this small Nordic city punch above its weight in music tech, and are start-ups still able to thrive there after a rocky few years for the global economy? The BBC’s Maddy Savage reports.

We do not own any music played in this podcast. All short snippets of music we play are for reviewing purposes only, and all credit goes to the original creators. We did not harm any animals making this show, and neither should you.]

Sweden is the world's third-largest music exporter, just behind the US and the UK. Over the past decades, Sweden has been cultivating future songwriters, producers, musicians, and DJs. The so-called Swedish Music "Miracle" is the years between 1990-2003 when Swedish musicians made it firm on the US Billboard. The world is looking to Swedish songwriters and producers, for music that works well on mainstream radio, playlists, and pop charts. If the only Swedish band or musician you can name is ABBA, you have a surprise coming. Over the past several decades, Sweden has been quietly cultivating future songwriters, producers, musicians, and DJs—particularly in the realm of pop and electronic dance music.Sweden is a music machine. Almost all Swedes speak English as at least a second language. Combine that with the generous government support of after-school music programs, plus subsidies for professional music endeavors, and you have a booming Swedish music industry.Music videosThe Hep Stars Sunny Girl Bob Marley Gröna Lund, Stockholm, Sweden 1977ABBA WaterlooRoxette The LookEurope The Final Countdown Ace of Base The Sign Swedish House Mafia ft. Many regard Olov Johannson as Sweden's greatest craftsman on the nyckelharpa. With his brilliant solo playing and as a member of the group Väsen, he has been largely responsible for the explosion of nyckelharpa playing that has been witnessed recently in Sweden. Olov grew up in Tärnsjö in northern Uppland and began to play the nyckelharpa at age 14. About a year later he began to study with Curt Tallroth, a well-known bearer of the tradition from Harbo. Through Curt, Olov has learned tunes that have been played in northern Uppland for centuries, passed on from musician to musician. Olov has also played with Eric Sahlström, the most prominent nyckelharpa player of the 20th century. Since 1989, Olov has worked exclusively as a musician, principally with Väsen. But he also plays with Anders Bromander, Nyckelharpsorkestern, Björn Ståbi, Mats Berglund, Kalle Almlöf and as a solo artist. The popularity of the folk-rock group Nordman has brought the sound of Olov's harpa to the ears of more than one million record buyers. In 1997 he was honored to be the first Swedish folk musician to work with the world renowned American ensemble, the Kronos Quartet. Olov has toured in the U.S.A., Canada, India, Libya, Slovenia, France, Ireland, Scotland, Luxembourg, Italy, Japan and elsewhere. Olov works actively to pass on his musical inheritance, and has become a role model for many young nyckelharpa players. He gives instruction both at The Eric Sahlström-Institute and through the Royal Music College in Stockholm. Olov has received many awards and scholarships for his achievements as a musician. In 1984 he was selected as a National Musician, in 1989 he was awarded the Viksta-Lasse Scholarship, and in 1990 he was chosen as World's Master of both the modern and older type of nyckelharpa. In 1992 he received the Ceylon Wallin Scholarship and in 1995 the Vuxenskolan's Artist Stipendium. 2013 he received the Zorn Medal in gold, possibly the finest reward a traditional musician can get in Sweden.
The backbone of Babs & the babes is the married couple Barbro Petersen and Lasse Nilsson. Barbro and Lasse became a couple in 2010. Both Barbro and Lasse have experience of the music profession as they were active already in the early 80's. Already during the first year together, they began to perform in some smaller contexts and then quickly discovered that they have two voices that work very well together. Barbro has a very strong and low alto voice and Lasse can still easily hit the highest notes for a tenor. Two voices that break with the more traditional and instead the woman has the dark and the man the light in the tones. They have searched a bit through music genres. They started with Swedish song classics that they arranged in a modern version, but ended up in the current style. This is largely due to Barbro's predilection for classical soul and artists such as Gladys Night, Roberta Flack and others. Now Barbro and Lasse are raising their musical commitment by releasing selfproduced material together for the first time. The couple is responsible for all singing efforts. You can find the music on Spotify and all other streamning platforms. On YouTube you will also find a lot of other videoproductions from Babs & the babes musical journey. https://www.facebook.com/Babsandthebabes

Blake and Andrew cover the Swedish Music Invasion. Starting with ABBA Swedish pop music swept the west. ABBA built a formula for writing effective pop music which continued through to the 1990s with Max Martin. Martin is mostly unknown but has over 20 number one singles and has written for pop acts like The Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and nearly every other pop act that has made you want to bang your head against the corner of the wall.
In this episode I'm sharing my million dollar writing hacks (i wish), who I am as a friend, what I think about social media and my favorite Swedish artists. Love and coffee to you all♡
