This week on The Nick Halaris Show we are featuring non-profit leader, Ibert Schultz. Ibert is the Executive Director of Black College Success, an organization committed to increasing opportunities through college access and career success for Black high school students. He's a dedicated activist and public servant with a long, diverse track record of success working to create a better world. He's also a great friend. We met a few years ago while volunteering for our kids' school and became fast friends, bonding over many things, especially our shared values around citizenship and public service. I wanted to have Ibert on the show to highlight the important work he and his colleagues at Black College Success are doing and to get his perspectives on some of the pressing issues of our day. As you'll see in the episode, Ibert is someone who's thought very deeply about our society, culture, and government and has a ton of really compelling ideas. In this fascinating episode, we discuss: What it's like to grow up in an environment where racially motivated police activity is a common occurrence and how that shaped his desire to be a public servant Why education still represents the best hope for the survival of the American DreamThe implications of the post-affirmative action world and why college access is something we should be thinking very seriously about if we truly care about creating opportunities for all AmericansWhat's working and not working in the DEI movementThe demonstrated empirical benefits of diversity in business and organizational performance& Much, much more Stay tuned to the end to hear how Ibert's mom provided a powerful example of his lifelong dedication to civic activism and public service and helped him find the courage to sign up for a stint with the Peace Corps in rural Nicaragua in lieu of the higher-paying corporate job track. Ibert also makes a compelling argument about the relationship between economic insecurity and the decline in civic engagement and participation. As always, I hope you all enjoy this episode. Thanks for tuning in! Love this episode? Please rate, subscribe, and review on your favorite podcast platform to help more users find our show.

After four decades in the international spotlight, the achievements of saxophonist Branford Marsalis continue to grow. From his initial recognition as a young jazz lion, he has expanded his vision as an instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and educator, crossing stylistic boundaries while maintaining unwavering creative integrity. In the process, he has become a multi-award-winning artist with three Grammys, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence. Growing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator, the late Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason. The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, the Quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band's latest release: The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul. Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with acclaimed orchestras worldwide, performing works by composers such as Copeland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. And his legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena. His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and Tony nominations for the acclaimed revivals of Children of a Lesser God, Fences, and A Raisin in the Sun. His screen credits include original music composed for: Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starring Oprah Winfrey and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Ma Rainey is the Netflix film adaptation of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play, produced by Denzel Washington and released in December 2020. Branford has also shared his knowledge as an educator, forming extended teaching relationships at Michigan State, San Francisco State, and North Carolina Central Universities and conducting workshops at sites throughout the United States and the world. After the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Branford and friend Harry Connick, Jr. conceived of “Musicians' Village,” a residential community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The centerpiece of the Village is the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, honoring Branford's father. The Center uses music as the focal point of a holistic strategy to build a healthy community and to deliver a broad range of services to underserved children, youth, and musicians from neighborhoods battling poverty and social injustice. In this episode, Branford shares his background, education, and musical journey. Več v medicinski oddaji in podkastu Ultrazvok. Graf: Dr. Janez Žibert. Synopsis On today’s date in 1692, London audiences were treated to a lavish theatrical entertainment entitled “The Fairy Queen.” This show was loosely based on Shakespeare’s comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” a play already 100 years old in 1692. To make it more in line with contemporary taste, characters were added or cut, and scenes shifted around to such an extent that Shakespeare, were he alive to see it, would be hard put to recognize much of his original concept. Musical sequences were also expanded, and the producers hired the leading British composer of the day to write them. His name was Henry Purcell, and “The Fairy Queen” would turn out to be the biggest success of his career. In addition to writing the show’s songs and dances, Purcell provided music to entertain the audience as they entered and exited the theater or stretched their legs during the intermission. The good news is that no expense was spared in the show’s production. The bad news was the show’s producers barely recovered their expenses. Subsequent productions, they decided, would be less flashy, but, recognizing the quality of Purcell’s music, they signed him on once again for their next extravaganza. Synopsis On today’s date in 1862, an 18-year-old Russian named Nicolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov graduated as midshipman from the Russian Naval Academy and prepared for a two-year’s training cruise around the world. Nicolai’s uncle was an admiral and a close friend of the Czar, and in his autobiography Rimsky-Korsakov admits he, too, at first thought it might be a good idea—he loved reading travel books, after all. But then Rimsky-Korsakov was seduced by music. He'd made the acquaintance of the eminent Russian composers of his day, lost interest in a naval career, and dreamed of composing music himself. The young midshipman’s tour of duty did enable him to hear a lot of it and to sample opera performances in London and New York. But what made the biggest impression on the budding composer was the sky below the Equator. “Wonderful days and nights,” he wrote. “The marvelous dark-azure of the day would be replaced by a fantastic phosphorescent night. The tropical night sky over the ocean is the most amazing thing in the world.” It’s perhaps not too fanciful to believe that such impressions helped Rimsky-Korsakov develop into one of the most inventive and masterful painters of symphonic colors and instrumental effects.

Episode 5, 2020: Ibert’s Flute Concerto Wednesday 1 July 2020 ANAM Music Librarian, Phil Lambert thinks French composer Jacques Ibert’s most popular compositions sparkle like French champagne. First coming to public attention in the early 1920s, Ibert’s oeuvre is known for being polished and entertaining, never driven by any theory, agenda or the desire to gain attention through shock value. But lest you think that his range is limited, try tracking down Orson Welles’ 1948 film, Macbeth, which owes its ominous and oppressive atmosphere to Ibert’s excellent score. Ibert wrote his Flute Concerto between 1932 and 1934 for his contemporary flautist Marcel Moyse, who is probably considered the greatest flautist of his time. Knowing that he was writing for a virtuoso, Ibert did not spare this composition from any technical difficulty. This is the challenge ANAM alumna Cassandra Slater (flute 2019) had to overcome when mastering this piece for the Grand Final of the 2019 ANAM Concerto Competition . In this episode of ANAM Radio, Cassandra shares with us how she trained “almost like an athlete” to make sure she had the stamina to perform this rather demanding piece with the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra. She also shares some insightful anecdotes about the piece’s second movement, written after Ibert’s father passed away. Cassandra was one of three finalists to perform in the Grand Final of the 2019 ANAM Concerto Competition with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in Hobart. The music you will hear is from her Melbourne performance where she performed the piece with Louisa Breen on piano.

This week's Contrabass Conversations episode features an interview with Chicago Symphony bassist Brad Opland. In addition to the interview, you'll get a chance to hear Brad perform on the double bass in his own arrangement of Ibert's Quatre Causons (four songs) de Don Quichotte for bassoon and bass and hear Brad perform on the electric bass in his south side Chicago church. Enjoy! About Brad Born in Minot, North Dakota, Bradley Opland began his musical studies at an early age and, by the time he was 10, knew that he wanted a career in a symphony orchestra. After graduating from high school a year early, he moved to Philadelphia to continue his music studies at the Curtis Institute of Music. One year later, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski appointed Brad to the bass section of the Minnesota Orchestra at the age of 18, one of the youngest musicians ever hired. He remained in Minnesota through Sir Neville Marriner’s tenure, coming to Chicago in 1984 after Sir Georg Solti offered him a position in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. - See more at: http://cso.org/about/performers/chicago-symphony-orchestra/bass/bradley-opland/#sthash.c5IOnq3y.dpuf
