Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a Puerto Rican singer and rapper who has rapidly become one of the most influential artists in the global music scene. Known for his distinctive style and genre-blending music, Bad Bunny has achieved international fame with his contributions to reggaeton and Latin trap, mixing elements of various musical genres. One of the significant milestones in Bad Bunny's career was his feature on the track "I Like It" by Cardi B, alongside Colombian singer J Balvin. The song was a commercial success, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The track is known for its infectious rhythm, vibrant Latin influences, and the collaboration of these three powerhouse artists, which helped introduce Latin trap to a broader audience.Bad Bunny's musical journey began on SoundCloud, where he independently released music while working as a bagger at a grocery store and studying at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. His breakthrough came with the single "Soy Peor," which gained significant attention and established him as a key player in the Latin trap movement. His debut album "X 100pre," released in December 2018, received critical acclaim and won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album. The album showcased Bad Bunny's versatility by combining reggaeton, trap, rock, and electronic music styles, proving his ability to innovate within different genres.Following his debut album, Bad Bunny continued to rise in popularity with collaborations with globally recognized artists such as Drake in "MIA" and Jennifer Lopez in "Te Guste." He is known for his fashion-forward and gender-fluid style, often challenging traditional masculinity norms in the Latin music community. His bold fashion choices and advocacy for social issues, such as working for the rights of marginalized communities and environmental concerns, have made him a prominent cultural icon.In addition to his music career, Bad Bunny has dipped his toes into acting. In 2021, it was announced that he would star in the upcoming Netflix series "Narcos: Mexico" Season 3, showcasing his charisma and versatility beyond the music studio.Bad Bunny's impact on music and culture continues to expand, as he bridges the gap between Latin music and the global stage. On the 62nd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, singer, guitarist and bassist from the Ace Frehley Band, Gene Simmons Band and also Rock City Machine Co, Ryan Spencer Cook, review the 1968 legendary album from Elvis Presley, "NBC TV Special" or better known as the "1968 Comeback Special." By 1968 Elvis had not performed live since 1960. Although, his movie career had been a tremendous success, even making him the highest paid actor in Hollywood, Elvis was not satisfied creatively. His music had been basically soundtracks to his movies and Elvis was frustrated. Since Elvis rocket stardom was born out of his legendary television performance, Elvis and along with young television producer Steve Binder, created a TV Special that would become affectionately known as the 1968 Comeback Special. Ignoring his manager Colonel Tom Parker's insistence that the TV Special be a Christmas theme event, Elvis & Steve Binder created a TV Special that would end up being the highest rated tv show of the year gaining 42% of the television audience. This special brought the KING back! The television special including various types of performances. Elvis performed some of his greatest hits, sometimes alone, sometimes with his original band in an intimate round setting, sometimes in sketches and even with dancers and gospel singers. The songs were varied and styles as well, matching Elvis' versatile appeal. The audience was young and attractive and Elvis wore various outfits, including the leather outfit which has become legendary and synonymous with this performance. Elvis never looked as good or sounded as good as well. The album went to number 8 on US Billboard charts and eventually platinum. There are numerous variations of this album and special releases that include a lot of the songs not featured in the television special. But all versions, include his incredible medley of Trouble / Guitar Man and the medley of his biggest hits like Love Me Tender, Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel, All Shook up and more. The album does include his single, If I Can Dream, which may be Elvis' greatest performance of all time. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was obviously Zeus' pick. So as Eddie Murphy says, "We got to win this race!" and we want to thank you, thank you very much, you're a beautiful audience thank you! Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, Mik Wanamaker and Mark Radulich present their MSlipknot 25th Anniversary Self Titled 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Slipknot is an American heavy metal band formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan, former vocalist Anders Colsefni and bassist Paul Gray. After several lineup changes in its early years, the band settled on nine members for more than a decade: Crahan, Gray, Joey Jordison, Craig Jones, Mick Thomson, Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson, Chris Fehn, and Jim Root. Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. Their sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide and over 12 million in their home country.Slipknot is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. It was released on June 29, 1999, by Roadrunner Records, following a demo containing a few of the songs which had previously been released in 1998. Later, it was reissued in December 1999 with a slightly-altered track listing and mastering as the result of a lawsuit. It was the first release by the band to be produced by Ross Robinson, who sought to refine Slipknot's sound rather than alter the group's musical direction. This is the only album to feature original guitarist Josh Brainard who left at the end of recording in late 1998 while the band was taking a brief break. Jim Root, who recorded two tracks at this point, would appear full time on subsequent albums starting with their next album Iowa. The album spans several genres, but is generally noted for its extensive percussion and overall heavy sound. W.A.S.P's debut album came two years after the band was formed. The Los Angeles based band was founded by lead singer, songwriter and bassist, Blackie Lawless. Blackie was a veteran of L.A. scene. Chris Holmes, who later became famous for his appearance in "Decline Of The Western Civilization II: The Metal Years", was the lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist along with Randy Piper. The drummer was Tony Richards. W.A.S.P. had become a target of the Parents Music Resource Center "PMRC" and their lead single "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" was taken off their debut album by their label for fear of backlash. The album featured hard rock, metal and shock rock as well. Blackie's trademark vocals and shock themes separated W.A.S.P. from a lot of the other L.A. bands. The band had a couple of videos as well to promote their shock rock image. The album made it to Number 74 on the US Billboard charts and went gold. The album was produced by Blackie Lawless and Mike Varney. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. We covered the big commercial hit album "Brothers In Arms" back in episode 154, but many afficianados of Dire Straits consider their finest work to be the album that preceeded this one.  Love Over Gold is their fourth studio album, released in late September 1982 and on the charts in June 1983.  For this album, prime mover and lead vocalist Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and percussionist Pick Withers are joined by new members Hal Lindes on guitars and Alan Clark on keyboards.  The songs on this album are longer than your standard single, particularly the majestic 14-minute "Telegraph Road."  Despite their length, "Private Investigations" was released as a single in the UK and reached number 2on the charts.  The shortest song, "Industrial Disease" (still clocking in at 5:50) was released as a single in the US.  It would reach number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, but would be a staple of rock radio stations at the time.A number of songs were written and recorded during the "Love Over Gold" sessions, but subsequently discarded from album release.  Amongst these was the song "Private Dancer," which was instead provided to Tina Turner for her comeback album of the same name.   Turner would take this song to number 7 on the US charts, and see her career reinvigorated by the success of her "Private Dancer" album."Love Over Gold" was a number 1 album on a number of charts, including Australia, Austria, and the UK, and reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.Rob brings us this outstanding, deep, and thought-provoking album for this week's podcast.Telegraph RoadThis lengthy masterpiece was inspired while Knopfler was riding in his tour bus down the 70-mile road of the same name.  The song narrarates the development and history along the road as the decades roll past.  It is easy to describe this song as prog rock, but it also contains one of the best guitar solo riffs you will hear. Industrial DiseaseGoodness me, goodness me!  We have to highlight the US single from the album.  The title comes from a term for work-related illness, and the term in this song references both individual work illness and the decline of British industry in general.  The reference to Dr. Parkinson is a British professor and satirist who is famous for the phrase "work expands to fill the time available for its completion." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (from the motion picture “Trading Places”)Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd star in this comedy about a yuppie and a homeless man who are forced to trade places as the result of a bet by two rich stock brokers.   STAFF PICKS:Murder By Numbers by The PoliceBruce initiates the staff picks with a dark song about becoming a serial killer.  This Police song appears on the cassette and CD version of the album "Synchronicity," but was left off the vinyl due to lack of space.  It was written by Sting and Andy Summers, the only collaborative song on the album, and was recorded in a single take.  Rock of Ages by Def LeppardLynch brings us a huge song from Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album.  Producer Mutt Lange counts off the nonsensical "Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen," to open the song, and the lyrics form an anthem suitable for arena show openers.  Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was an inspiration to the creation of this anthem.Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris deBurghWayne's staff pick takes a fantasy approach to the story of Charon and the crossing of the river Styx, advising not to pay until the trip is done.  Irish artist Chris deBurgh broke into the US top 40 with this song, peaking at number 34.  Lines from Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" can be heard in the bridge to the song. The Walls came Down by The Call Rob finishes the staff picks with a song that is inspired by the Biblical tale of the fall of Jericho.  Lead singer Michael Been would pull biblical references into his lyrics, including this song.  The Call formed in 1980 in California, and blended rock, New Wave, and post-Punk.  U2 and Simple Minds both consider The Call an influence in their music. COMEDY TRACK:My Bologna by "Weird Al" YankovicWe close out with Weird Al's meaty take on "My Sharona by" the Knack. fWotD Episode 2699: Pinkerton (album) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 24 September 2024 is Pinkerton (album).Pinkerton is the second studio album by the American rock band Weezer, released on September 24, 1996, by DGC Records. The guitarist and vocalist Rivers Cuomo wrote most of Pinkerton while studying at Harvard University, after abandoning plans for a rock opera, Songs from the Black Hole. It was the last Weezer album to feature the bassist Matt Sharp, who left in 1998. To better capture their live sound, Weezer self-produced Pinkerton, creating a darker, more abrasive album than their self-titled 1994 debut. Cuomo's lyrics express loneliness and disillusionment with the rock lifestyle. The title comes from the character BF Pinkerton from Giacomo Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly, whom Cuomo described as an "asshole American sailor similar to a touring rock star". Like the opera, the album contains references to Japanese culture.Pinkerton produced the singles "El Scorcho" and "The Good Life". It debuted at number 19 on the US Billboard 200, failing to meet sales expectations. It received mixed reviews; Rolling Stone readers voted it the third-worst album of 1996. For subsequent albums, Cuomo returned to more traditional pop songwriting and less personal lyrics. In subsequent years, Pinkerton was reassessed and achieved acclaim. Several publications named it one of the best albums of the 1990s, and it was certified platinum in 2016. It was credited as an influence by several emo bands. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:08 UTC on Tuesday, 24 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Pinkerton (album) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Justin.

1972 - August: Emerson, Lake & Palmer “Trilogy”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 23, 2024 35:22

If you are exploring the rise of prog rock, it doesn't take long until you encounter the power trio of Emerson, Lake & Palmer.  This progressive rock band is actually a supergroup.  Keyboardist Keith Emerson came from The Nice, vocalist and guitarist Greg Lake was in King Crimson, and percussionist Carl Palmer was from Atomic Rooster.  Emerson, Lake & Palmer formed in 1970 and would make their mark as a prog rock band which adapted classic and symphonic music into the rock genre, with elements of jazz, acoustic, and art rock coming into play.  Most ELP songs are long and complicated, not making any attempt to stay within the confines of the “hit single” pop track.Trilogy is the trio's third studio album, following their eponymously named debut, their second studio album entitled “Tarkus,” and their live album, Pictures at an Exhibition.  Trilogy continues a tradition of combining original material with adaptations of classical music.  It was also a challenging album for the group to make, utilizing more overdubs than previous albums.  The upside is a great sounding, polished album.  The downside is that the music was difficult to duplicate live, causing a number of the songs from Trilogy to be minimally used in set lists. The album was considered both a critical and commercial success, reaching number 2 on the UK albums chart, and number 5 on the US Billboard 200 chart.ELP would continue as a force in the 70's, breaking up in 1979.  Both partial and full reunions would continue through the 1980's and 1990's, with their final performance being held in 2010.  Both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake died in 2016.Wayne takes us through this prog rock masterpiece for this week's podcast. FugueWe open with an instrumental featuring Keith Emerson on keyboards.  A fugue is a style of music involving counterpoint, popular in the Baroque musical era of the 1600's.  You will get exposure to a lot of serious musical compositions and style listening to this group. From the BeginningThis is the "hit" from the album, if you think of Emerson, Lake & Palmer in terms of popularity.  It went to number 29 on the US charts, and is the highest charting US single.  Greg Lake wrote the music and lyrics, and plays the acoustic guitar for this ballad.  The lyrics take on a philosophical sone, emphasizing the importance of the present moment, while not missing past mistakes and missed opportunities.  The SheriffKeith Emerson wrote the music and Greg Lake wrote the lyrics to this western-themed track.  It tells the story of an innocent man fleeing the law, encountering the law in the form of the Sheriff, then taking the Sheriff's place after shooting him.  It ends with a great honkytonk piano solo.HoedownImmediately following “The Sheriff” on the album, the group creates an adaptation of Aaron Copeland's iconic “Hoe-Down,” written for his classic ballet entitled “Rodeo” in 1942.  This tune became well known after being used in advertisements by America's Beef Producers.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “Super Fly”Curtis Mayfield created this song for the black-oriented crime drama film of the same name. STAFF PICKS:Best Thing by StyxBruce leads off the staff picks with the first single from Styx's first album.  Dennis DeYoung and James Young wrote the song and trade off on lead vocals.  It peaked at number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100.  This is a great tune to hear and grasp what the early days of Styx sounded like.  Rock and Roll, part 2 by Gary GlitterRob brings us a glam rock anthem made famous today by its use in sports stadiums nation wide.  This single off “Glitter,” the debut album by Gary Glitter, is the only one of his singles to crack the U.S. top 10.  Both “Rock and Roll” part 1 and part 2 peaked at number 2 on the UK singles chart.Brandy (You're A Fine Girl) by Looking GlassIt is a mystery how Lynch was able to pick up this well-known classic of yacht rock this late in the podcasts.  This track tells the story of a waitress who gives her love to a sailor, knowing that he would never be on shore for long.  Will It Go Round in Circles by Billy PrestonWayne's staff pick is a funky tune from the man often known as the fifth Beatle.  Preston played with a number of musicians, including Ray Charles, Little Richard, Sam Cook, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Joe Cocker, and of course the Beatles.  This soulful tune sold over a million copies and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Walk In the Night by Junior Walker & the All StarsThis jazz-infused (largely) instrumental track closes out the podcast for the week.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Con Funk Shun [29:19] "Juicy" Spirit of Love Mercury SRM-13806 1980 The Bay Area's very own Con Funk Shun. If you've got a funk/soul album with a track called "Juicy" you know you've got to listen to it. Or at least, I do. Written by the band's guitarist and vocalist Michael Vernon Cooper. The Wonderland Singers [34:07] "Bats in the Belfry" Spooky Halloween Wonderland Records LP-293 1974 They just don't make organ music like they used to, and probably for good reason. At least the cover art is cool. Ustalost [35:20] "III" The Spoor of Vipers Gilead Media RELIC82 2017 Some blackened heaviness from this solo project by Will Skarstad of Yellow Eyes. Missing Persons [40:49] "Bad Streets" Spring Session M Capitol Records ST-12228 1982 This album made a strong impression on my when it came out and I still find myself thinking about it. For this episode's selection, I took a look at the track listings and immediately heard this song in my head. The album made it to number 42 on the Hot 100 and generated 4 singles: "Words (https://youtu.be/IasCZL072fQ?si=VO4X1DpThnxhHYup)", "Desitnation Unknown (https://youtu.be/1WDly1Oc_P4?si=5j2wgoC34DdwEtoU)", "Windows (https://youtu.be/v0vdk3YOvMM?si=31AgmgVzkx6cUeou)", and "Walking in L.A. Amazing Rhythm Aces [49:48] "Third Rate Romance" Stacked Deck ABC Records ABCD-913 1975 Some fun country-inflected rock from these Memphis gents, sounding almost perfectly mid-70s in a good way. The band even made an appearance on the second season of Austic City Limits (https://youtu.be/pLz6nIvqB2c?si=nFcMK2tAEEfFjI8n). Love Barry "Byrd" Burton's finger pickin on this. Jacksons [56:49] "Blame It on the Boogie" Star Fire Ronco R 3200 1980 As seen on TV! 18 original hits by 18 original artists! A compilation of hits, mostly from 1979. "Foot Loose & Fancy Free" was Rod Stewart's eighth studio album. It continued Rod's 70's solo artist success. Rod's legendary vocals were in prime condition and he had tremendous band behind him. He had three guitarists, Gary Grainger, Jim Cregan and Billy Peek. His bassist was renowned session player Phil Chen. The keyboard player was Jon Barlow Jarvis and on the drums was the legendary Carmine Appice. This band could match up with any other band in the 1970's. The album featured three huge hits that have been in rotation on rock radio since the album was released, including "Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" and "I Was Only Joking." Those three songs even had videos which were starting to become fashionable. The album also includes typical Rod Stewart ballads, some funk, some psychedelic rock, prog rock and more. The album made it to Number 2 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 3X platinum. The album was produced by legendary Tom Dowd and was considered the last of his rocking 70's albums. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. It's probably safe to say that by late 2002, Eminem was the most popular rapper in the world.  With three full-length solo albums under his belt, Slim Shady had come quite a long way in the four years since taking the world by storm with The groundbreaking Slim Shady LP in 1999 - introducing the world to his devil-may-care madcap rhymes that ranged from insightful, to absurd, to downright offensive; sometimes all at once. There was no denying Marshall Mathers' talent on the mic - combining the sounds of the underground with a hurricane flow, lyrical wizardry, and pop culture irreverence - Eminem's popularity was bolstered by the frustrated angst of the emerging nu metal, horror-core and even pop punk sounds of the era.  Realistically, he didn't even *sound* like anything from those genres, but his aura was so strong that he became a sort of crossover artist without even needing to actually cross over. It was just *cool* to like Eminem. With the backing of music industry heavy hitters like Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, Eminem also had serious critical credibility - He'd won Rap Grammys for the aforementioned Slim Shady LP and it's lead single ‘My Name Is' in 2000; He followed it up with three more the following year for the likes of The Real Slim Shady, Forgot About Dre, and his sophomore album The Marshall Mathers LP - and would eventually go on to win two MORE Grammys in 2003 for his ‘02 album The Eminem Show and its lead single ‘Without Me'. And, while we're on the topic of the successes of Slim Shady - the records show that by late 2002 Eminem's 3 Solo LPs had gone no less than 18x Platinum in America alone. There is just one thing Em hadn't done yet - and quite honestly I can barely believe it myself - Eminem had never had a US Billboard hot 100 Number 1 Hit. That all changed when Eminem recorded the lead single for his feature film debut - changing how we all thought about Eminem forever. This is the story of Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' with newly unearthed audio from Marshall Mathers himself!

Vision Quest is the story of high school senior wrestler who wants to lose weight and get into a lower weight class just to battle a seemingly impossible foe. The movie which starred Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino was not a box office success, but has since become an 80's cult hit. Vision Quest is the rare movie which has been helped by it movie soundtrack. The soundtrack is filled with many successful 80's artist, including two songs from Madonna who was skyrocketing into superstardom at the time. Most of the artists, with the exception of Madonna and The Style Council, were hard rock acts, like Foreignor, Dio, Sammy Hagar and Journey. Other artist involved were Don Henley, Red Rider and John Waite. The album went platinum in the United States and made it to #30 on the US Billboard 200. Returning with Ozzy was the young guitar God, Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley on bass and Lee Kerslake on drums. This lineup will only have two albums under their belt, but perhaps the two greatest hard rock albums back to back. Diary Of A Madman may have topped his debut album. Randy Rhoads groundbreaking guitar playing went to an even higher level. Bob Daisley's bass playing and incredible lyrics added to the growing mystique and image of Ozzy Osbourne. Lee Kerslake's drumming excellence is on full display on the beginning of the opening track, "Over The Mountain." Ozzy's vocals and delivery is at its peak throughout this album. His underrated and underappreciated singing was some of his best work ever. The album was one again produced by Max Norman, but along with Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley. The album went 3X platinum in the United States and made it to #16 on the US Billboard 200. It produced some of classic rock's greatest hits including "Flying High Again." The album is sadly the last album by this incredible unit and obviously Randy Rhoads last album ever. He passed away in a terrible plane crash during the Diary Of A Madman tour. A tragedy that robbed the world of one of the greatest guitar hero and by ALL accounts a beautiful human being. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. What the Riff?!?
1985 - August: R.E.M. “Fables of the Reconstruction”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2024 37:41

The year 1985 would find the band R.E.M. in transition between college band success and the mainstream powerhouse they were to become in future years.  The quartet of Michael Stipe on vocals, Mike Mills on bass and vocals, Peter Buck on guitar, and Bill Berry on percussion and backing vocals were moving towards a greater variety of instrumentation and a bit more experimentation with their third studio album, Fables of the Reconstruction. The album actually has two names, as "Fables of the Reconstruction" was the name if you held the cassette or album with one side up, and if you flipped it over the name appeared as "Reconstruction of the Fables."  The suggestion of the name "Reconstruction" came from Michael Stipes' father who was a carpenter.  It is also a loaded term in the American South from which the Athens, Georgia band hails —  “Reconstruction” is the period of time immediately following the American Civil War when the South was being brought back into the Union.  The songs on the album have a darker sound than earlier works, and the lyrics draw from Southern Gothic works.  This was the first album recorded outside the U.S., as the band traveled to London to work at Livingston Studios with producer Joe Boyd. While the singles from the album would not be considered hits in the United States, the album reached number 28 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and number 35 on the UK Albums Chart.  It would feature two singles, “Driver 8' and“Can't Get There from Here,” which would become well known over time.Rob brings us this transitional album for today's podcastDriver 8The second single released from the album refers to the Southern Crescent train line.  It ran under the Southern Railway until 1979 when Amtrak bought them out, and continues as the Amtrak Crescent today.  “And the train conductor says take a break, Driver 8.”Green Grow the RushesThis deeper cut  was written as a pact between Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs, relating to the poor treatment of indigenous peoples and migrant workers.  “Green grow the rushes, go.  The compass points the workers home.”Maps and LegendsInspired by preacher and Southern folk artist Howard Finster, this song uses the reading of a map as a metaphor for reading a person.  Like the map reveals stories in little symbols on it, people are the accumulation of their experiences and stories. Can't Get There from HereThis song was the lead single from the album and peaked at number 10 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart - meaning it peaked at about 110 in US popularity.  It is the first R.E.M. song to have a horn section.  You can sense the Soul inspiration in it.  The lyrics about “Philomath” refer to an unincorporated community just outside of Athens, Georgia. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Weird Science by Oingo Boingo (from the motion picture “Weird Science”)Two geeky high school students create the perfect woman in this sci-fi comedy partly based on Frankenstein, and largely based on the 1951 comic “Made of the Future” by Al Feldstein. STAFF PICKS:Drive by The Cars  Lynch brings us a version of the Cars single from the 1985 Live Aid concert.  Bassist Benjamin Orr takes on the lead vocal duties for this ballad which was written by frequent front man Ric Ocasek.  The studio version appeared on their 1984 album Heartbeat City,  and became one of the bands biggest hits.Take On Me by a-haBruce features the first US hit by a Norwegian band.  While a-ha released the song twice before without it becoming a hit, the third release with its video combining pencil sketch animation and live performance would propel it to the number 1 slot in the U.S.  Its 2 1/2 octave-spanning chorus makes it one of the hardest songs to sing.Summertime Girls by Y & T Wayne's staff pick is a hair band rocker, the first and only hit by Y&T.  It went to number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, but was played frequently on the television series “Baywatch.”  The Band Y&T was originally known as "Yesterday & Today," and although they don't have many hits they have sold over 4 million albums worldwide, and were an inspiration for Lars Ulrich of Metallica to become a musician.Dancing in the Street by David Bowie and Mick Jagger Rob closes out the staff picks with a cover originally recorded by Martha and the Vandellas in 1964 (but we all agreed that the Van Halen cover is the best there is).Jagger and Bowie's version made it to number 7 on the US chart and number 1 on the UK chart.  This collaboration was their contribution to the Live Aid charity movement. NOVELTY TRACK:Tequila by The ChampsWe close out this week's podcast with the tune that helped Pee Wee Herman avoid catastrophe at the hands of a biker gang in “Pee Wee's Big Adventure.” Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. The album continued Aerosmith's climb as perhaps America's preeminent hard rock band of the 1970's. The album was one of the first albums to ever get shipped platinum and has gone quadruple platinum. On the 47th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1976 classic album from Aerosmith, "Rocks." Rocks was Aerosmith's 4th studio album. The album continued Aerosmith's climb as perhaps America's preeminent hard rock band of the 1970's. The album was one of the first albums to ever get shipped platinum and has gone quadruple platinum. The album also reached number 3 on the US Billboard album charts. Aerosmith is led by one of the best singing and charismatic frontmen in rock history, Steven Tyler. Steven's vocals are one of a kind and style is unmatched. Aerosmith is led by dual guitar attack of Joe Perry and Brad Whitford. They trade off leads and rhythm guitar throughout the album. The rhythm section is Tom Hamilton on bass and Joey Kramer on drums. All the musicians as a whole are vastly underrated. The album was produced by the legendary Jack Douglas. Rocks features that classic Aerosmith style and see them continue the ascension to the top of the rock bands of the 1970's. Rocks features classics like, Back In The Saddle and Last Child while containing some of Aerosmith's favorite deep cuts, like Rats In The Cellar, Home Tonight & Nobody's Fault and Sick As A Dog. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 45 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Patreon pick. So look out Sukie Jones, because the Album Review Crew is BACK!
