Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Multiple tracks were played on a keyboard, arranged and combined with the audio field recording using midi workstation computer software. "The sound for this piece is a recording of a stream running under the snow with the sounds of running water, the popping of ice melting and pebbles bumping and clacking as they are rolled by the water. I live in California now but as a child I lived for a time in the northeastern United States where cold, snowy winters were the norm. As the snow melted I could hear water moving under the hard crust. The recording from the High Coast region of Sweden reminded me of that magical wintery memory. Melt water slowly begins to move beneath the glistening surface and gently forms channels through the snow, trickling downhill. Eventually the water makes its way into an established stream bed, carving a tunnel through the snow and ice while above, the snow still hides the movement beneath, reminiscent of the creatures of Nordic mythology who inhabit caverns and rivers. The stream joins others, perhaps emptying into a lake and eventually the water reaches the ocean. "I have incorporated sounds and rhythms from traditional Swedish folk music, suggesting the vibrating sympathetic drone strings of the Nyckelharpa and the beat of some Polska dances - an instrument and its music listed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage database. "The landscape of the Swedish High Coast was formed by the arrival and departure of glaciers in the last ice age. The sounds of melting snow and ice are a reminder that present day glaciers are threatened by climate change. The Sonic Heritage project has helped make me aware of the fragility and ephemeral nature of many places that have contributed to world culture. It is imperative to protect these sites in order to preserve those qualities that make such places unique or valuable. My music expresses the passion and excitement of diverse world heritage and the resilience of the natural world. I hope my music resonates with all who hear our collaboration." Water under snow in Hall, Sweden reimagined by Martin Gregory. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. Caught between the joy of a gaming win and the sorrow of a message never meant to be sent, our latest episode is a journey through life's highs and lows. We kick off with a celebratory moment, one of our kids achieving an impressive feat in Fortnite, and then pivot to a somber discussion about the consequences of texting while driving. It's a reminder that, with four new drivers in our homes, the stakes are high. The conversation takes an unexpected turn into the whimsical world of Australian slang – a laugh is had by all, but we don't shy away from the sobering news out of Tennessee, where a deputy and Tabitha Smith met their tragic end.The heart of our episode lies in Tennessee, where the gravity of life's unpredictability is felt through the chilling narrative of a submerged patrol car and its two occupants. We explore the deputy's nascent career, the enigmatic final text, and the significance of vehicle data in piecing together this puzzle. As we reflect on the six children left behind, the weight of the unfolding drama reminds us of the preciousness of human life.As we wrap up, we shift from the somber back to the supportive strains of emergency radio communication. Drawing from my own experiences, I underscore the importance of clarity and presence of mind when every second counts. Sharing stories from my early days on the job, we discuss how mental preparedness can make or break critical moments in the field. Whether it's bonding through late-night gaming or the shared adrenaline of a live concert, we close on a note of connection and the reminder to stay alert, to the rhythm of life and the road alike. Musik: Gildentaverne (Hurdy Gurdy, Nyckelharpa, Guitar Music). Many regard Olov Johannson as Sweden's greatest craftsman on the nyckelharpa. With his brilliant solo playing and as a member of the group Väsen, he has been largely responsible for the explosion of nyckelharpa playing that has been witnessed recently in Sweden. Olov grew up in Tärnsjö in northern Uppland and began to play the nyckelharpa at age 14. About a year later he began to study with Curt Tallroth, a well-known bearer of the tradition from Harbo. Through Curt, Olov has learned tunes that have been played in northern Uppland for centuries, passed on from musician to musician. Olov has also played with Eric Sahlström, the most prominent nyckelharpa player of the 20th century. Since 1989, Olov has worked exclusively as a musician, principally with Väsen. But he also plays with Anders Bromander, Nyckelharpsorkestern, Björn Ståbi, Mats Berglund, Kalle Almlöf and as a solo artist. The popularity of the folk-rock group Nordman has brought the sound of Olov's harpa to the ears of more than one million record buyers. In 1997 he was honored to be the first Swedish folk musician to work with the world renowned American ensemble, the Kronos Quartet. Olov has toured in the U.S.A., Canada, India, Libya, Slovenia, France, Ireland, Scotland, Luxembourg, Italy, Japan and elsewhere. Olov works actively to pass on his musical inheritance, and has become a role model for many young nyckelharpa players. He gives instruction both at The Eric Sahlström-Institute and through the Royal Music College in Stockholm. Olov has received many awards and scholarships for his achievements as a musician. In 1984 he was selected as a National Musician, in 1989 he was awarded the Viksta-Lasse Scholarship, and in 1990 he was chosen as World's Master of both the modern and older type of nyckelharpa. In 1992 he received the Ceylon Wallin Scholarship and in 1995 the Vuxenskolan's Artist Stipendium. 2013 he received the Zorn Medal in gold, possibly the finest reward a traditional musician can get in Sweden.

Anna Tam has a very personal take on traditional British songs. 'Anchoress' is an excellent debut album, Anna's strong soprano voice is self-accompanied by a variety of lesser-known stringed instruments such as nyckelharpa, viola da gamba and hurdy gurdy. Sparse yet atmospheric arrangements enhance the songs; while ensuring the stories and the people who lived them are to the fore. During lockdown in March 2020 she launched ‘Folk from the Boat' on her YouTube Channel.

1. Aurora's schottis / Hägg bland björkar (Bird-cherry among birches) - lydia ievins (Montague, MA). A pair of friendly schottis tunes by lydia, played here on nyckelharpa and piano. The second owes its name to lydia’s family's namesake tree (Swedish "hägg" = Latvian "ieva"). Recorded on Koivu, lydia's duo album with Helsinki-based pianist Juha Kujanpää. www.lydiamusic.org  2. Hyla brook, by Robert Frost. Read by Margaret Youngberg (Greenfield, MA).  3. Owl’s Cowl - Chimney Swift (Boston, MA). Chimney Swift is Cecile Leroy (cello), Daniel Raine (cittern, guitars, banjo), Yaron Shragai (recorders, whistles, percussion), and A.Z. Madonna (accordion). This is Daniel’s first tune written for cittern. He named it after an impressively plumed owl he saw perched high up in a friend’s tree. This track appears on their album, Fly Me Home. https://chimneyswift.bandcamp.com/  4. Eel-grass, by Edna St. Vincent Millay. Read by Ben Williams (Northampton, MA). Ben notes, “Spending some time growing up by the ocean, I sometimes long deeply for that specific habitat, which contains so much unique natural beauty and so many images and stories in my mind.”  5. Eleanor Plunkett - Curt Osgood (Binghamton, NY). Curt writes, “Turlogh O’Carolan composed numerous moving and fanciful melodies popular with folk musicians everywhere today. Eleanor Plunkett is one of my favorites. Played on my dulcimer for a YouTube video short I made this past March, I strove to create a peaceful visual and auditory moment away from the stresses of the past several months.” You can watch the YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/bC4X5Wwe8Xk  www.curtosgood.com  6. Musiklista: Forest foodCorinne Von Dardel,Stensöta Karin Wiberg,Violin M Fl Vridna VågsångLo Kristenson,Tove Bagge, Viola Hanna Cronhjort, Kontrabas Julija Morgan, Violin Forest foodCorinne Von Dardel,Stensöta Karin Wiberg,Violin M Fl Tordyvelns DansKarin Wiberg,Trio Phantasm Karin Wiberg, Violin M Fl Serenade Suite en trioMel Bonis,Trio Dring Karin Wiberg, Violin M Fl SICILIENNE FORVIOLIN & PIANO ESS-DURMaria Theresia Von Paradis, Samuel DusjkinJacqueline Du Pre / Gerald MooreEMI 00542, 7243 5 55529 21 Korpen FlygerTrio Phantasm,Trio Phantasm Karin Wiberg , Violin M Fl Master the MachineCorinne Von Dardel,Stensöta Karin Wiberg, Violin M Fl Master the MachineCorinne Von Dardel,Stensöta Karin Wiberg, Violin M Fl Jorum orm i ögaMarie Samuelsson,Kerstin EkmanDavid Björkman, Dirigent M Fl Voidward into the raven flock - Mov II.
