Tara Defrancisco (@taradefrancisco) is the Founder of The Nest Theatre & an Actor as well as Improv Comedian with her show 'HERE: The (Improvised) Musical'. Tara's a seasoned vet in the world of improv comedy, along with her worldwide traveling show “HERE The Improvised Musical”, and lately, she's become your resident positive pep-talker over on instagram and TikTok. There's a real good chance you've seen one of her videos shared on social. If you're into comedy, creative spaces, or just want a dose of genuine inspiration, this one's for you! Tara shares her journey from finding her love for improv, really getting started with comedy in Chicago to performing all over the world, and how that led to building a home for improv right here in Columbus with The Nest. Within that we cover the unique magic of improv, the way it only exists in the moment, how it teaches people to trust themselves, and why even the “bad” shows have value. We also dive into the importance of community, why people aren't connecting with their neighbors like they used to, practices to get better at staying connected with friends in a fast-paced world, and building inclusive creative spaces for communities. And of course, we get into some deeper conversations about defining success in the arts. Tara reminds us that there's no single path, whether you're doing something professionally or just for the love of it, the journey is valid! This episode has plenty of those “oh wow, I needed to hear that” moments. Whether you're a performer, a creative, or just someone looking for more connection in your life, Tara's story and perspective is one you don't want to miss! ---THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY--- PromoWest Productions - @promowestlive For all upcoming shows & event info of who's coming through Columbus, OH, visit promowestlive.com or to purchase tickets directly, visit AXS.com River & Rich - @riverandrich Located in the Franklinton Arts District of Columbus, OH, River & Rich brings together quality apartments, desirable amenities, and a vibrant artistic community. "What's the deal with Columbus, Ohio?" (Can you hear Garry saying that as he's impersonating Jerry Seinfeld?) It's Ohio's state capital, has the largest population in that state, is ranked as one of the most livable cities in America, and Garry Meier and Leslie Keiling have been talking about it on the show quite a bit lately. Garry welcomes Tara DeFrancisco and Rance Rizzutto, the owners of The Nest Theatre, the dedicated home for improvisational comedy, sketch revues, live lit, and experimental theatre in Columbus, Ohio. Improv teacher, performer, and theater owner Rance Rizzutto joins Justin and Doug this week at the iO Theater in Chicago to talk about masculinity in society. Rance gives some insight as to the types of people and expressions of masculinity he’s seen while teaching comedy over the years. Doug references the documentary, The Mask I Live In, and asks everyone if they can remember the first time someone told them to “be a man.” Doug reflects about accessing emotions in his life and Rance tells a wonderful childhood story about emotions getting the best of us. The heroes talk about crying and why, as men, we feel like we’re not supposed to cry and Rance gives the inside scoop on how commercials get approved through test markets. I already did the amazing bio in our first interview. She's back! Our first interview was so great, and I felt like I had so many more questions, we had to do more. The follow up is at least as good. I tried to be more excited in this one. Chicago's most enthusiastic cheerleader, Tara DeFrancisco.
The Free Press called Tara DeFrancisco “The Funniest Person In Chicago”. She won Top 25 Funniest Women in Curve Magazine. Tara started in stand up but switched to improv! Tara teaches improv and sketch-writing classes at iO, Second City, and ComedySportz, and coaches a Harold team at the iO theatre as well. She performs for the Second City as an understudy for the resident stages, and at CSz several times a week. Her iO team Chaos Theory performs Saturday nights. She is now in four LasVegasDotCom commercials airing nationally (one of them is embedded below). And Tara is the only person so far that I absolutely had to interview twice right away. I don’t know why. Maybe cuz we’re both from Ohio. Read all the notes and see the funny pictures here (opens new window). Full Episode: Video preview:
