What if your checklist is killing connection? You can show intentional appreciation without making people feel like a task. This month on the Joyosity™ Podcast, we've been getting cozy with gratitude. Far beyond the generic “thanks!” you reflexively say cause you were raised with manners. We're talking personalized, purposeful, and strategic appreciation that actually fuels connection and trust at work (and home). In this In Case You Missed It episode, Jenn Whitmer and producer Shelby Merryweather reflect on May's big takeaways — from Enneagram-savvy thank-yous to the surprisingly soulful power of systems. Here's what you'll walk away with: The subtle (but powerful) difference between thankfulness and gratitude — and why only one builds trust. How to give appreciation that's specific to someone's Enneagram style (spoiler: praise what you want to produce). Why “operationalizing your values” (yes, even gratitude) creates more joy and less burnout. And again Shelby brings the question every leader should ask around 16 minutes in.
Gratitude isn't a garnish! It's the main dish. In Part 2 of our conversation with “The Gratitude Guy” Kevin Monroe, we roll up our sleeves and get practical. This episode is all about turning appreciation into action — without falling into the traps of toxic positivity or meaningless thanks. You'll learn how to deploy gratitude as a leadership strategy, how to make it part of your workplace rhythms, and why it transforms not just your team culture but your people's *entire lives*. (And honestly, yours too.) If Part 1 was the “why,” this one is the “how.” This isn't about feel-good fluff. It's about building a joy-filled, high-performing workplace on purpose. Here's what we talked about:03:15 Don't Be That Guy: Why bad behavior cancels out even your best thank-yous 06:37 The ripple is real: How gratitude multiplies inside and outside of work. 11:16 Practice, not perfection: How to make gratitude an ongoing practice, part of your leadership and team rhythm. 12:43 Stop sprinkling. Start deploying: Three steps to use gratitude well. 15:46 The 4S Formula: The four parts every "thank you" needs to actually land. 20:04 The Big Bocks: How to deploy gratitude today. One thing you can do to create a and why generative workplace that wins. Here's the real real? Cultures that prioritize joy and gratitude don't just "retain" employees. They freaking energize them. If you're tired of Band-Aid solutions and empty gestures, this episode is your blueprint for doing it differently — and doing it right. Gratitude isn't just a warm fuzzy feeling — it's a leadership superpower. But most of us are doing it wrong… or at least, doing it on autopilot. Ready to learn how real gratitude can transform your team, your culture, and your own leadership mindset? Let's dive in. In this episode of The Joyosity™ Podcast, Jenn Whitmer welcomes Kevin Monroe — globally known as "The Gratitude Guy" — to explore how gratitude isn't just nice-to-have, it's a game-changer at work. Kevin shares his personal story of accidentally becoming a gratitude expert, the difference between genuine gratitude and transactional thankfulness, and why seeing people — and we mean really seeing them — is at the heart of leadership. This isn't about gratitude jars gathering dust or robotic thank-yous at checkout lines. It's about sparking real human connection, even in the toughest seasons of leadership. Here's what we talked about: 06:12 The Pit of Despair Can Be a Launchpad: Kevin shares how hitting a personal low point ignited his extraordinary work around gratitude — and how struggle often plants the seeds of deeper joy. 09:40 Gratitude ≠ Thankfulness: Thankfulness can be transactional and automatic. Gratitude requires human connection, recognition, and intentionality. 16:05 The Kmart Card Problem: Forcing gratitude isn't going to work for you…or your people 19:55 Connection Powers Engagement: Leadership isn't about checking the “gratitude” box. It's about creating environments where people feel seen, heard, and valued. 28:48 Gratitude Empowers: Simple shifts — like asking “Who made your day better this week?” — can build trust, retention, and authentic workplace culture. If today's conversation sparked something in you, imagine what a life infused with real gratitude could unlock. Share this episode with a leader who needs a reminder: seeing people — truly seeing them — changes everything. And hey, don't forget to subscribe so you catch Part 2 of this conversation with Kevin Monroe — it's gonna get even better. When is a cookie a giant letdown? (Nope, not a joke setup.) When the cookie is a crumb compared to the work you do. Because a one-size-fits-all thank-you is just another way to say you don't really see me. In this episode of the Joyosity Podcast, Jenn gets fired up about the difference between generic appreciation and the kind that actually builds culture, boosts performance, and keeps your best people from walking out the door. You'll also discover how the Enneagram can be a powerful tool to personalize appreciation and create true belonging. Sure, it may feel like one more to-do at first—but it's actually the shortcut to saving time, money, and your sanity. In this episode, you'll learn: 01:24 What happens when your gratitude isn't in the right language 04:36 The performance outcomes linked to belonging and feeling seen, heard, and valued (yep, we brought receipts) 10:26 How to stop giving “meh” thank-yous that land worse than a vanilla cookie 13:04 What each Enneagram type actually values in appreciation—and how to speak that language 23:34 How to appreciate what you see and want to see more of 27:01 A tiny challenge that leads to big impact Host: Jenn Whitmer Jenn is an international keynote speaker, leadership consultant, and the founder of Joyosity, helping leaders create positive, profitable cultures through connection, curiosity, and joy. Turns out, shielding your team from stress doesn't protect them—it breaks trust. And if you've ever found yourself trying to carry it all alone? You're not the only one. There's a swirl every modern leader experiences. So we're going there. Keynote speaker for joy at work Jenn Whitmer and podcast and livestream producer Shelby Merryweather are digging into what actually builds trust, especially when the pressure's on and you're figuring out how to lead through change. We're talking team culture and honest leadership, helping you communicate with clarity and redefining what “professional” even means. Listen in on our transparent convo about what makes modern leadership work — and where we all still get stuck. Oh! At 12:45, Shelby names the moment every leader's lived but few say out loud. If you're Googling “how to lead with being exhausted” at your desk right now? Start here. Key Takeaways for Leaders: 03:07 How to be professional. Can you be professional and human? Professionalism shouldn't mean fake, stuffy, or perfect. 08:03 Change is scary, but not changing is worse.Trying (and potentially failing) is often better than staying stuck in fear. 11:08 Transparency builds trust. Trying to “protect” your team by hiding your stress usually backfires. 15:58 Villagers make the village. Stop buying into the myth of the solo hero. We need each other to be healthy for the long term. 21:00 What tech can't do. When you get distracted by the Shiny Object Syndrome that is AI and tech tools, you make it worse 24:29 Why your internal people matter the most.Clients and customers will stay if you take care of your people. And a great story about a mop. Send this to your village, and especially the ones who want to be more human at work. Seriousness about destroyed me in 2nd grade. And unfortunately, it's likely your path to failure as a full-grown adult human. You don't get to decide what feels like play for someone else. I see this all the time in team building exercises or team happy hours, the leaders walk away from it thinking, “Yes, we rocked that!” only to later find out others on the team felt drained or annoyed by the whole event. That's where knowing your team members' play styles really helps. In this conversation, Shelby and I discussed how play shows up at work (and home) and how being able to fully engage boosts productivity and joy. We talked about those “forced fun” events, how employers can make their everyday work more playful and how allowing toxic behavior can ruin the whole thing. This months focus on play was timely. With never ending snow days, lots of tense feelings on social media, and even some shift in my personal life and business… reminding me that play and boundaries go hand in hand helped me navigate forward. Tune in and let me know what stood out to you. I'd love to hear what your play style is and how it shows up at work. We didn't leave bullies behind in the 7th grade. That person will appear in any group of people where the leader allows it. And it's the worst. Especially when the bully is the manager. A Workforce Institute study showed that your direct manager impacts your mental health more than your spouse, doctor, or therapist! So we need to deal with the bullies and unsafe (and even toxic) behavior. And play can be part of that solution. Jeff Harry has made it his mission to prove that play can make workplaces more enjoyable and productive. He's seen firsthand how workplaces struggle when they leave out joy. In this episode, Jeff and I recounted how Ted Lasso uses play to align with his team (of course we had to talk about him!). We spoke about what defines play and how being in flow can increase productivity by a significant amount. And we also dove into what to do about toxic behavior in the workplace. Jeff and I both shared some questions to ask yourself so you can uncover what your play personality and values are and how to incorporate them in your work. We also nerd out a bit on how every innovative workplace product has its roots in curiosity and a willingness to embrace mistakes. If you're curious about unlocking your team's zone of genius or simply tired of the dreaded Sunday scaries, this episode is here to help you find joy and innovation at work. When you're at play you're truly you and we need more people in this world who come alive with the work that they do. Big with Tom Hanks thrilled me. But Jeff Harry loved it so much, he wanted that to be his job! After he made that happen, he quickly realized the toy industry had no joy, no creativity and the most shocking of all… no play! In this episode Jeff shared his story about following the fun and how he's built a career around the concept of play at work. We spoke about the difference between forced fun and play at work, how to help your team feel seen and appreciated, and the real science behind how joy and play can benefit your productivity. We shared stories about large organizations that have gone under because of the lack of play and and how you can build a business with more joy at the center. Stop breaking yourself into tiny pieces. You know what I mean; when you're one way at work, one at home, one at church. It feels safer, it feels more acceptable, but often times you're depriving yourself and others of your full magic. In this episode, Shelby and I recap the beautiful Jade Simmons' wisdom and what we learned over the month. A few things that stood out to both of us was this idea of boldness and how being bold doesn't come from trying to be bold — it comes from being who you are. We talked about the idea of “let purpose be your picker” and “passion be your fuel source.” I also shared questions I ask my clients to help them really narrow down that through line of purpose in their careers. I shared a funny story about a speaking engagement fail I had recently and how the idea of perfect always kills connection. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I wince a little when I hear adults ask kids that question because I know it's laying a sandy foundation for their understanding of work and life. This week, I continued our conversation with the incredible Jade Simmons who knows a thing or two about living with purpose and a few more things about thinking outside the box in her career. Jade shared mic drops galore on the importance of self-discovery, staying true to yourself, and living in your purpose. She shared her own journey of breaking free from the expectations of others in classical piano performance and keynote speaking. We also dove into the power of looking for the “golden thread” that has followed you through every role and job you've had. Understanding that your purpose is all about the impact you have on others creates a shift. And that changes the way you show up at work (ahem, and the rest of your life). It's beyond the task list and meeting schedule; it's the way you share your gifts that make a difference in people's lives. When you tap into that purpose, you transform the way you lead (and live). If you're ready to be “more yourself” this year while still being a wildly effective leader, this conversation is for you. Get ready to be inspired and challenged. It's time to embrace what makes us complex humans so we create real joy and meaningful impact at work and in the world. Jade is living proof that you don't have to choose just one activity to be successful, but you must have purpose. In part one of this conversation with Jade, a true Renaissance woman who's not afraid to embrace all her gifts, she brings the straight talk of hope to exhausted leaders. We dove deep into the idea of purpose and leadership, particularly why purpose is the ultimate guide in life and work. Jade shared her powerful definition that I repeat all the time: “Purpose isn't what you do. It's what happens in others when you do what you do.” And we talked through what that looks like for you as a leader, and how you cultivate that on your team so productivity soars, creativity flourishes, and success follows (all without the exhaustion). This conversation will inspire and challenge you to bring your whole, fabulous self to everything you do. Trust me, your work (and the world) will thank you for it! What's your knee jerk reaction when someone disagrees with you? I'm sure none of us were born with the instinct to lean in with curiosity. It's definitely something I have learned and a skill I've worked on (and literally just this week had to practice in some big disagreements!) Thinking back of this month's focus on getting to joy through disagreement proved to me yet again the power of having hard conversations and approaching conflict with curiosity and kindness. In this week's episode, Shelby and I look back on the lessons learned this month and recap some of our favorite moments from the conversations with Justin. We talk about how conflict is showing up online and in our homes and how we've approached it. One of our big consistent reminders this month: Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I hate you. Do you thank someone for disagreeing with you? Not usually! But after this conversation with Justin, I hope you consider the benefits of respectful disagreement. Justin's most recent book, I Respectfully Disagree, takes readers on the journey to one of my favorite topics: conflict is a necessity in a functional workplace. In this conversation, Justin shares how his mother challenged him to be open to new experiences growing up, we tackled the definition for what a disagreement really is, and we even dove into the touchy topic of an “open-door” policy. Justin's wisdom from how he's seen disagreement at work directly result in better performance will help you implement this idea immediately as a leader. Disagreement is a part of leadership. It's uncomfortable, it's hard but it's a skill that we need to cultivate in order to lead well. This week, we dove into the art of leading when everyone isn't on the same page. As I sat down with a plate of eggs and hashbrowns, I noticed the table conversation revolved around lab-raised meat and a skeptic — not what I was expecting at a business networking breakfast before 8am! How many times have you found yourself in the middle of a conversation that was, well, less than agreeable? When faced with a heated conversation, what's your initial reaction? Understanding whether you're a moonwalker or a stirrer-upper can set the stage for effective leadership. We covered my favorite "Three Question Rule" and how this helps you understand hidden perspectives, builds trust, and opens up avenues for diverse ideas. I gave examples for each of these questions and how to pivot as you listen intensely and with an open heart. Eventually as the leader you will have to make the call, but asking questions will help you lead more effectively and explaining your decisions fosters respect and shows you value your team's input. Transforming disagreements into moments of connection and productivity can make your leadership journey not just successful but joyful. So keep those questions coming and see the positive ripple effects throughout your organization! Still have questions? Book a spark call with me, I'd love to chat! “Just” My business is “just“ me. I'm “just” a manager. I'm “just” a stay-at-home mom. I spoke to a room of “just” 20 people. This seemingly innocent word can creep into our vocabulary and minimize our achievements. Both Shelby and I realized how impactful it is to shift away from minimizing language and embrace our full worth thanks to Krista this month. Krista Monson reminded us of the importance of respecting ourselves, trusting our intuition, and holding others in high regard. Shelby and I dove into some of our favorite lessons learned this month and how Krista's words showed up in our lives all month. We explored the beauty of building meaningful connections and communities. Bumblebees. That was the inspiration for one of Krista's biggest shows at Cirque Du Soleil. Creativity comes to us in moments we aren't expecting. It's rarely when we're checking emails and sitting around a board table trying to force it. In this episode, Krista shared her 8 survival skills for how to stay true to yourself and your creativity in high pressure situations and big transitions. Krista's years of creativity and work in the arts has seen both. She warns us to stay away from the word “just” and how to have the courage to lean into curiosity as we navigate periods of uncertainty and transformation. Krista emphasized that a leader's ability to listen deeply—not just to others, but also to oneself—is essential for aligning values with action. We laughed together about the importance of play and rest and explored the concept of deep listening. If you're creativity is feeling low, I invite you to listen. Krista's expertise is hard earned and beautifully put. This episode was packed with unique strategies that blend clarity, courage, and curiosity. “More”. I am guilty of wanting to add one more sentence, one more ornament to the tree, one more side to Thanksgiving dinner. How do we know when “more” is leading us to the right thing or distracting us from what matters? This week Krista shared with us her journey through a VERY successful career and how she knew when to step back or when to add more— not more tasks but diving deeper into what's truly meaningful. Anyone who knows me knows that I want my life to be a musical, so I was so excited to sit down with Krista Monson, an award winning choreographer who spent years working with Cirque du Soleil! Krista shared her personal struggle of burnout despite a glittering career and reminded us that even the most dazzling careers have moments where we need to step back, readjust, or even try something new. Like so many leaders I've spoke with, the higher you get on the ladder, the further you get from the work that you love. We dove into what that looked like for Krista, how you can recognize the need for something different and how to navigate career transitions. Grab that favorite beverage, get comfortable, and tune in. This conversation with Krista Munson is packed with wisdom and a great reminder to stay curious and seek out joy in work! I had a coworker who was like sandpaper for me. Every time my slack would ding with their name, I would just feel a pang of “ugh”. Have you ever felt that? Truthfully, if you work with people long enough, someone will be this for you…and this might be inevitable at some point in any relationship. I decided to start with donuts. I knew she obsessed over donuts, and I thought maybe some time outside of work talk would do us some good. So I asked her to go for donuts. After that donut shop meeting, her messages did not send me into groan mode. This is the magic of connection! Connection is the glue of healthy leadership. Start with understanding your personality and values to connect with others. Then move to understanding others. Without connection, we start to feel untethered from the goals of an organization and the team. Every relationship doesn't have to include donut shop meetings. But as a leader, you MUST connect with people for your work and team to be effective. In this episode I'm sharing three tips to help you work torward connection. With so much collective anxiety around this election time in the U.S., you may be noticing your team struggling with the connection piece right now. I invite you to sit down and have real conversations. Show your authentic self and be genuinely curious about your team members. You can transform your leadership style and your team this way. Chaos. October brought more than its fair share! So how do you lead in the midst of it all? The short answer? Values. They operate as a North star for your behavior and decisions. Shelby lives in a small mountain community and saw chaos and values play out right in front of her eyes all month in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We spoke about how values impacted so many decisions in her own response and in her community at a larger scale. We spoke about leaders owning up to mistakes, and how values don't have to feel like a backpack of heavy rocks but a guiding force in times of uncertainty. Ken's conversations about values being lenses you see the world through was a helpful reminder through it all. We touched on how knowing other people's values can help you lead more effectively and understand behavior that might be leaving you thinking “well I would never do it that way”. When there are blank question marks in the middle of hard times leaning in with curiosity and being intentional about filling those spaces is key to living and leading with confidence. This month really smacked us with reminders that we can't control the weather, or the outcome of an election, or a boss you may not align with. What we can do is control ourselves. Our values influence our behavior and the way we see the world, and they are foundational to self-leadership. If you know you need to define your values take a listen and let us know what you think! Here's what we talked about: 04:37 How abandoning your values can lead to conflict 08:55 Tips for onboarding with a values first mindset 12:28 Using your values to lead in chaos 16:05 How values showed up in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene 21:14 How tragedy amplifies your values 24:48 Recognizing the signs of burnout in yourself and your team Links/ Resources: The Free 99 Step: Values Identifier Guide Put those values down on paper so you can align your actions to living as your best self which reduces decision fatigue and improves decision quality. Being seen by someone else is one of the best feelings in the world. A dear friend gave me a necklace of three rows of clustered, bright wooden discs in every imaginable color. A necklace that she would never wear. But because she's seen my bubbly self, she knew jewelry in riotous color would not only be worn frequently, but treasured. In this week's episode, Ken Black and I finish our conversation about the magic of values. We unpacked how knowing our core values can extend our leadership in surprising ways. Not only leading ourselves, but knowing the values of individuals on the team can people be accountable to the type of person they want to be. We problem-solve differently when we understand each other and can see each other clearly. This clarity not only helps prevent team conflicts but also aligns everyone towards a shared vision. Integrating your values into all areas of your life brings joy at work and at home. When you show up as your true self, it creates a more joyful workplace and life. My son's part-time job as a boy was running into walls. The phrase “face the way you're walking” constantly came out of my mouth. One because I was tired of dirty walls, but mostly for his success. Ken shared the same idea for leadership success. Focus on where you want to go and so difficulties and disruptions don't sway you from the goal. Choosing how you want to shoe up in the world or the lens through which you choose to see the world, Understand Seeing the world will revolutionize your leadership success, your organization's culture, and, actually, every part of your life. Ken and I dive into how adopting a values-driven approach can transform not only how you lead, but how you show up everywhere. Ken offers a refreshing take on values, describing them as dynamic lenses rather than fixed rules. These lenses shape how you see and interact with the world, helping you lead with clarity, consistency, and purpose. When you know your values—and live them out—challenges become opportunities, and leadership becomes a lot more joyful. When your team knows what you stand for and sees you live it daily, trust naturally follows. Ken's stories and strategies provide actionable steps to ensure your values guide you, making your leadership more authentic and impactful. Whether you're rethinking your organizational culture or striving to become a more transparent leader, this conversation is a goldmine of insights to help you bring more joy to your culture at work. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” How many times were you asked this as a kid? How many times have you asked that TO kids? Is that the question we really should be asking them? Or does it tie their worth to their role at work? I love how Ken and I dove into the idea of being vs doing in this episode. Some times work doesn't align with our values, even when it's what we've been saying we want to be (or not be) our entire lives. “I want to be a teacher when I grow up” is that true or do you really want to influence the next generation to be better? “I want to be a nurse when I grow up” or do you want to help people heal when they find themselves hurting in life? Unraveling our values from our role opens up an entire new world for us. Defining what those values are and using them as a lens to view the world and make decisions through will change the way you walk through life. I hope you find this conversation helpful and my DM's are always open if you'd like to talk through your values together! You're already leading and living by your values. But the problem is… you might not know what they are and how they show up in your work. What may surprise you is how much this impacts your success and your bottom line. Bonus: a quick turn through the Joyosity model that helps you visualize how understanding yourself, your mindset, and your values will build trust on your team so you can be more productive, which means you will be be more profitable without sacrificing your humanity. “Identify values” has probably been on your to-do list since, well forever. You have a culture whether you're aware of it or not. Pay attention to culture, even if you're a one-(wo)man show. Here's why: as you grow you want to make sure it's what drives your hires, fires and business decisions. Whether you realize it or not, culture will create conflict ,and we want that conflict productive and repairing. In this episode, Shelby and Jenn discussed some ah-ha moments we got from our wonderful guest Moe Carrick, and lessons we've seen in our own lives and business around culture. We talked about how to - welcome questions as a leader (even when they're hard!) - foster a culture where people feel comfortable challenging you when you step outside of your values. - be honest about where you culture is “The way you do things here” is up to you! And it takes being an intentional leader and welcoming conflict to create a culture that bring joy at work. No leader is waking up thinking “I want to create a toxic workplace”, quite the opposite! But without self awareness, that's exactly what you'll create. Every leader should be able to answer this one question: Why do you do what you do? Whether it's a casting broken bones, serving a chai latte, or building aircrafts. That question —Why? — is so important because that is what shapes workplace culture. In part two of our conversation, Moe Carrick shared a story about how her daughter's workplace (a restaurant) and how every employee had excitement and a story around each cocktail or dinner entree. The culture in that restaurant was palpable in the way the employees talked. The contrast to that is “toxic” workplaces that have BIG and very public mistakes. (think Boeing) We spoke about the pain that those big mistakes in leadership cause and how it can send leaders (and entire organizations) into a shame spiral. Moe shows us how to create a healthy culture, even sharing how her own team has let her know when she was acting misaligned with their team values. Telling the truth at work can be hard! For employees and leaders alike. Leadership is messy, and at times, very humbling. Self-awareness of our strengths and blindspots and choosing to live by our values is the first step to a healthy, positive workplace culture. Here's what we talked about: 03:45 The opposite of joy 07:35 What leader's need to do about culture 12:36 The noticing phase as a leader 17:35 Learning through big mistakes 23:00 What can employees do to shift culture Links/ Resources: Books mentioned: Dying for a Paycheck https://amzn.to/3XmyH5x When Work is Good https://amzn.to/4giUNi2 Connect with Moe: LinkedIn Profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/moecarrick/ Website - https://moementum.com/ The Free 99 Step: Joyosity Explorer Map http://jennwhitmer.com/joyosity-explorer will guide you to understanding the deeper purpose and story you tell yourself about your work. “That's how we do things here.” Sometimes that's used as an excuse…at least in my experience! But at it's best, it's a wonderful definition of culture. Moe Carrick, workplace culture expert, defines the sometimes squishy term “culture” with “that's how we do things here.” I love that definition for a few reasons. 1 - It implies that if ignored culture will still be there 2- It means you have to live out your values in order to influence the culture. In this conversation we dove deep into the power of being seen by a strong leader, the reward an organization will have when intentionally building a culture and the way joy can show up in the workplace. (spoiler: it's increased productivity and engagement) Moe shared some warning signs for what will happen when culture is ignored and helped us understand that. Although we're two Enneagram Sevens, we're both aware that work will not always be sunshine and rainbows. In order to have joy at work you must have conflict. I know that sounds absurd but stay with me here. It's unrealistic to have a workplace that doesn't experience conflict. It's unrealistic to have any relationshipe without conflict. Conflict is the struggle of limited resources and differing goals. And I hate to break it to you, but that shows up in every workplace, home, and friendship at some point. Instead of running from the conflict, this episode invites you to lean into it. I share the four stages of conflict resolution and what you can do to move through the steps with dignity and respect for those around you. I share three questions to help you understand the other person in the conflict better — and we even talk about Goose and Maverick. You deserve a workplace that has healthy conflict and real joy. What do you do when someone tells you a story that isn't true? Maybe you were there or you heard it from someone else differently. As a leader, knowing how to handle stories (true or not) is so important for the integrity of your team. This month was all about the science behind why stories work and tricks for engaging others through story, thank you Kindra Hall! In this episode Shelby, who works behind the scenes in my company, and I dove into what we loved most about this month's content. What we noticed in our day to day lives about stories and my favorite part… what to do when stories don't feel true. We laughed about how to use stories in parenting and leadership and went through a few scenarios at work and home when a story was viewed differently from multiple people experiencing it. Having your values plastered on the office wall is not living by them. Wanting to know how to infuse them into your business so your team embodies them as well? That requires one of our people power skills — storytelling. The best way to showcase your values is to live by them and tell your personal story around them. Storytelling is an essential skill in leadership. Last week Kindra shared the science behind storytelling and it led us right into this episode where she breaks down the “how to” of storytelling. If you stay in the mode of “I'm not a storyteller,” I have bad news folks: Your leadership will suffer. Storytelling is the key to change. It's almost impossible to elicit change without a good story. (a true one I might add!) Kindra broke down what every good story needs and gently reminded us to start paying attention to the stories around us, yes, even the uncomfortable ones! We spoke about how stories build confidence and connection and how we can start today to gather and tell better stories. “The shortest distance between two people is a story.” My coach Harris says this frequently, and I find it true over and over. In person, in an email, a LinkedIn post, a TikTok…stories change us AND shape our leadership. I‘ve watched Kindra Hall for a long-time as a mentor from afar. Someone who's doing what I want to do. Author, speaker, and storytelling expert, her stories have impacted me in profound ways (that she didn't even realize!). I was thrilled she joined me for another podcast episode. We really got into the science of storytelling and it was such a great reminder to me that storytelling is quite literally a part of our DNA. It's how we evolved as humans (and how we continue to!). We shared laughs about keynote speaking and how people often overlook stories as a form of learning. But as a teacher and keynote speaker, I've seen stories awaken sleepy students and executives! But not just to entertain, but as a powerful leadership tooI. I loved how Kindra put it: “Would a scorpion not use their poison? Would a Zebra not use their stripes?” It's a superpower only humans have and to say you don't need story is to say you're not human. If you have overlooked finding and using stories in your leadership, join this conversation. And then…I'd love to hear your story! Here's what we talked about:03:45 Who is Kindra Hall? 07:47 How Kindra discovered the power of storytelling 12:50 Defining what a story is 16:11 The proof that stories can persuade 18:30 The science behind storytelling Links: The Story Edge: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1400228573/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_ZY7DVCSS8HMBHN905JBZ?linkCode=ml2&tag=jennwhitmer0a-20 The Joyosity Leadership Retreat: Work on your leadership stories with Jenn and other women who are leading. “It's fine, that's just the way work is. It isn't supposed to be fun” “I just need to put my head down and work harder” “Why am I so weak?” Have you said these things to yourself? Me too. In this episode I tell the story about the “summer of crying on couches”. It wasn't a fun summer. But it led to the work I'm doing now, the work I believe in - joy at work. Toil and languishing should not be the norm. We have to believe a new story. But that means erasing these common thoughts and rewriting our stories around what work should feel and look like. We have to believe we deserve joy and that's not easy. The stats on why joy matters: Every year there are 120,000 work related stress deaths Those events cost 190 billion dollars a year When you center joy you have a 31% increase in productivity If 1 person has joy at work there's a 25% increase in the groups performance Joyful people are 3 ½ more likely to help others Here's where you can start: Thursday August 22nd I'm hosting a Leadership Lift. It's Free! It's an hour long and it's one of my favorite ways to help leaders identify how they can start putting joy back into work. You deserve a life that's full of joy both at work and at home and I'll continue to shout that from the rooftops. I hope you'll start believing me and joining in! Summer is here and that often means a revamp of routine (or what I like better: rhythms). Whether you have little ones out of school or you have vacations on the horizon, it can be hard to remember to rest. As an Enneagram 7 I'm prone to fill all the empty spaces with more! But I've come to realize rest is the secret weapon for leading a productive and joyful team. This week on the podcast, I dove into how we can lead while embracing different rhythms. I share the three S's that each enneagram types need: as a 7 mine is silence! And we talk about how rest isn't just about lounging around; it's about creating spaces of daily, weekly, and annual relaxation that recharge your energy. When you make rest a priority, you're a better leader and model for your team. Your mind, body, and team will thank you! If you want to talk through what your Enneagram is and what you might be needing this summer let's chat: Hop on a phone call with me or just schedule an Enneagram Navigator session. Here's what we talked about: 02:06 Where is the right place to find rest? 05:04 Understanding the types of rest you need 08:51 Tips for creating solitude in a busy work environment 10:12 How to balance solitude and loneliness while working remotely 13:08 The benefits of fully disconnecting during vacation 17:05 Weekly routines to help your team recharge 19:49 How to encourage your team to prioritize taking their PTO Links: https://jennwhitmer.com/spark-call
We all need a reminder now and then that it's more than okay to take a break — Actually, rest is a weapon against your life collapsing around you. Especially as leaders. Giving yourself permission to rest actually increases your productivity and of course increases your joy at work! This week, I talked with Erika Biddix, Entrepreneur Strategist and CEO of Aught. We discussed how we've had to work to rewrite our definition of productivity. We swapped stories about finding and embracing rest in a productivity-driven culture and the value of letting go. Erika shared how she has been moving and achieving and helping others since she was a teenager. And now, she's taking midday naps if she needs it. Something she would have NEVER done 10 years ago in her burnt out, hustle state. (As the granddaughter of an Italian immigrant, I think we could all benefit from the siesta lifestyle!) Things like gardening, doing a puzzle, or calling a friend can still help you move the needle at work, I promise. Sometimes, taking a break will let you draft an email once versus four times because your brain is clearer. Whether you're a go-getter struggling to take a breather or simply looking to find balance in your hectic life, this conversation is packed with insights and tips. The goal is for us all to experience joy and peace at work (and the rest of your life too!). And rest is required. Here's what we talked about: 02:09 Tips for overcoming guilt around needing rest 06:12 How to handle the guilt of asking for help as a leader 09:20 Ways to reframe rest as productive for the mind and body 12:13 How to manage the anxiety when not being productive 18:01 Tips for making rest a regular habit 24:44 The importance of leaders modeling rest and how to communicate it Links: https://jennwhitmer.com/spark-call https://weareaught.com/
Inevitably, at some point in your career, you're going to outgrow a position or role that you've had. Maybe even something you REALLY love. Like my son's favorite shorts when he was a toddler, at some point, they'll have to go to GoodWill. No matter how we try, we just can't make it fit longer than it's meant to. Whether that's a promotion or offering something differently in your business growth is good, but growth is also really uncomfortable. Here are three questions that I use in my life and business to see if it's time to change. I encourage you to really sit with these three ideas if you feel a change on the horizon. I share two red flags to watch out for if you're resisting the change and then a few thoughts on how to move forward. I'm always a quick phone call away if you need an outside voice to bounce your ideas off! Click the link below, and let's talk it through! Here's what we talked about: 02:09 How change is hard both as a kid and an adult 06:01 Question 1: Is it working? 08:35 Question 2: Does it fit? 12:24 Question 3: Is it fun? 17:54 Two false fallacies we tell ourselves about change 20:10 The steps to change
Leadership requires ruthless self-honesty and radical self-compassion. You balance between the two with curiosity. Nicole Trick Steinbach and I share a similar belief in this and plenty of similar leadership scars! Nicole shared some really incredible stories about how she found herself in tech, what led her to an HR intervention with her leadership, and how she coaches others to become brave leaders now. She's been in the mud and failure of leadership and has no qualms about sharing what she's learned with all of us. Thank goodness! It's okay if leadership doesn't come easy at first, it's okay if you admit that you're not great at everything, in fact please do. This episode is for any of you who've felt less than perfect in a leadership role (which is all of us by the way!) As a child, I heard “Silence is golden” often. (And I remind myself as an adult too!) I agree silence has its place in conversations, in negotiations, and definitely on long car rides. But I've learned that silence doesn't help when there's a problem on your team or in your family. Silence is LOUD when there's conflict brewing. After 20 years in law enforcement, Scott Harvey realized the power silence can hold. He shares stories from the stage and in his recent book, “Silence Kills,'' about how to build rapport so you can have a comfortable silence in your relationships, not one that's sending off distress signals. I loved how he spoke about awkward conversations and how they usually lead to an awesome place. A place where we're more connected and more productive. Take a listen to what Scott has to say. Spoiler alert: silence doesn't kill the story people are telling themselves. It just causes you to lose control of the story. I heard the term “sweaty conversations” recently and giggled. I thought it was a perfect description for those hard, uncomfortable conversations that need to happen. Whether it's at work or home there's really no avoiding these types of conversations in life. So how do we know when it's time to put on some good ole deodorant and face the music? In this episode, I share three warning signs it's time for that a hard conversation. We talk about how assuming the best in others doesn't actually mean that we're always assuming they're okay, and how to approach these conversations with empathy and curiosity. I shared my favorite scripts for how to start these out and what to do to minimize everyone's blood pressure response to the conversation. If you feel just the slightest nag that a hard conversation might need to happen, I invite you to take a listen and run through the litmus test I've created on whether it's time. “Is this what I'm supposed to be doing?!” It may sound something like me complaining to my dear friends about work one too many times or just the nagging feeling and comments from those who know you best that you should “really try something else.” Either way, listen to that tiny inside voice that's prodding you in a different direction and those trusted outside voices that know you best. Finding what brings you joy at work and what your purpose is is much easier said than done. The work will still be hard, but it will be worth it — not only for yourself but for those around you. Tony shared how he found himself exiting the corporate finance world and the ways he differentiates which voices are worth listening to. (I think this advice is gold right here!) He shared a classic quote that goes something like, “If it's meant to be, it's up to me.” But we both were quick to say that doesn't mean you go the journey alone. It just means you take control of your life and your career. If you've been ignoring that quiet nudge to something bigger or different or just healthier, I invite you to listen to this one in hopes it helps you weed out the noise and trust your intuition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq5S9tXcpa8 Here's what we talked about: 04:47 Who is Tony Martignetti 09:07 How to find joy and purpose at work 13:03 What outside voices you should trust 16:30 Why some mentorship relationships go bad Links: https://www.ipurposepartners.com/
“Ugh, I swear I've answered that 5 million times.” You've thought that, haven't you? Some days, as leaders, it feels like all we're doing is repeating ourselves. When LaShonda recognized this as an entrepreneur speaking to her clients, she did something brilliant… She started posting her “how to's'' on Youtube. It changed her career. Now she works a 20-hour week and makes real money from the platform. The idea that we must work harder in order to work better is just a lie. In today's world of ever-changing technology and more of our work being done behind screens, LaShonda believes there's a better way. Leveraging tech doesn't have to be complicated and can give you more time for the “real life” things you're longing for. (hello, real books with real pages and that whole green stuff outside called grass) If you're longing for more time away from your screens without jeopardizing your work or your business, LaShonda will change your life and the way you work.
