Today I'm wrapping up with Terrance Martin, the dance captain and a swing currently on Hamilton's Philip Tour (and previously all over the world). This week, Terrance talks about his international experiences with Hamilton, including how exciting it was building up that tour with alums from every production of Hamilton worldwide. He also walks us through the role of a Dance Captain and how the way he focuses on the intentions of each character really informs the way he communicates. He has to know the intricacies of every role while being super tuned into his cast mates so he can give both the show and his fellow actors exactly what they need to kill it on stage.  And on the topic of legacy (because it always comes back to that, doesn't it?), Terrance talks about being a founding member of the Black Artist Dance Collective, a program focused on supporting and connecting Black artists and building the community he never had. /// Terrance Martin on Instagram Terrance Martin VO on Instagram Terrance's Website The Black Artists Dance Collective: https://www.tbadcollective.org/ https://www.instagram.com/tbadcollective/?hl=en /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps

Terrance Martin is back for round two and while everyone loves feeling seen, is there anything better than seeing your friend absolutely killing it at something they love and you get to hype them up and tell everyone how amazing they are? The answer is no. Terrance's journey to traveling the world as a Hamilton Swing and Dance Captain spans six years and in hearing him talk about his experiences and his friendships surrounding this show, you can tell that the invisible string theory is hard at work in his world.  This week Terrance talks about a life-changing Season of Yes but it took a lot of no's to get there and a lot of them were from Terrance! After a long look at his career and asking himself some very hard questions about how and why he wanted to be a performer in the first place, Terrance called his bestie and announced his retirement. His plan was to "bow out gracefully,” commit to teaching the next generation, and embark on his Season of Yes.  So naturally that's when the Universe jumped in and said BET! because guess what show came calling... /// Terrance Martin on Instagram Terrance Martin VO on Instagram Terrance's Website The Black Artists Dance Collective: https://www.tbadcollective.org/ https://www.instagram.com/tbadcollective/?hl=en /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps

Terrance Martin is a multi-faceted performer and activist, a founding member of the Black Artists Dance Collective, and one of the best conversationalists on the planet. Terrance is currently the dance captain and a swing on the Philip Tour, and previously has been all over the world with Hamilton. It took him six years of auditioning to get there but that's actually great because he got a ton of experience performing in other great shows during that time. We talk a lot about redefining success, and that was all a major part of it. His approach to being a swing is so fun because Terrance has detailed backstories for every role on that stage and gives us a fascinating deep dive on why the psyche of these characters is so important. Shout out to his fellow Capricorns! This week, Terrance also talks about growing up an introvert who wanted to perform while having to learn to fight for his existence as a "Black feminine gay man in the red South." Terrance explains that his voice, his walk, his *light* didn't allow him to hide, which at the time manifested in anger and trauma but has now led him to a place of growth and strength. None of this is easy by the way, especially when you learn what Terrance went through. Note: I jump in to remind you before it happens, but towards the end of this episode Terrance tells a traumatic story involving racism, bullying, homophobia, threats of violence, and the description of an incident that took place in a pool that includes a severe injury to Terrance's ear. /// Terrance Martin on Instagram Terrance Martin VO on Instagram Terrance's Website The Black Artists Dance Collective: https://www.tbadcollective.org/ https://www.instagram.com/tbadcollective/?hl=en /// Gillian's Website The Hamilcast on Twitter The Hamilcast on Instagram Join the Patreon Peeps

Today we hear the personal journey of a dear friend of mine, John Arthur Greene, an actor, singer and songwriter. John reflects on the impact that the pause during the pandemic's lockdown had on his career and mindset. John walked away from the entertainment industry after 26 years, performing on Broadway for 8 shows a week, and more. He talks about how difficult his career has been on his body, not always in a healthy way. John and I crossed paths during my time intensively treating Broadway performers so we were able to reflect on what health meant to him years ago compared to how he feels about it now. He discusses the type of physical and mental regiment that he endured to maintain excellent physique and mindset and succeed in the industry. For John, times of prayer, meditation, and stillness with God are the most important aspects of his daily practice now. John's notable work:He was most recently seen as Walker Jerome the Blouse Man in the East Coast Premier of A Walk On The Moon at the pre-Broadway house George St. Playhouse. Some of his other credits include: Stand-By for 5 Principle Characters, the Fight Captain & Dance Captain in the revival of Stephan Sondheim's Company (Broadway). U/S Max Van Horn in Tootsie (Broadway), Theo - the lead singer of “No Vacancy” in School of Rock (Broadway); American Idol Season 15 - Farewell Season (FOX), Riff in West Side Story (Broadway); Doctor, U/S Mr. Wormwood in Matilda (Broadway); Robert Mullins in Peter Pan Live (NBC); Luke in Mim (Off-Broadway); Jonathan in Tick Tick Boom… (LA); Action in West Side Story (50th Anniversary European Tour); Jack Kelly in Newsies (Maltz Jupiter); Riff in West Side Story (Boston Pops Symphony); Danny in Grease (NCT - BroadwayWorld.com Award For Best Actor In A Musical) just to name a few. He performs solo's and his solo music all over the world, singing “Oh Holy Night” for ABC 11's 2020 Happy Holiday's Special; “Heavens On Their Minds” for the promotion of NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live with the kids from School Of Rock on Broadway, “Gethsemane” for Andrew Lloyd Webber's New York Times Talk and “Jailhouse Rock” for Mike Stoller's 80th Birthday Celebration. His Latest Single “LiNE & THE LETTiNG GO” is out along with “March On!”, “Wild & Free”, “Hold Onto Me”, “Easy”, “Brooklyn”, “Takes Me Back” & his Debut EP “Shadows Of Light” are all now available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and YouTube under his own record label JAG Records. The music videos for “LiNE & THE LETTiNG GO”, “March On!”, “Over & Over”, “Wild & Free”,  “Easy” & “Creep” are available on YouTube. John runs a Prayer & Worship Ministry called REViAL SESSiONS which went global in 2017 reaching 18 different countries. This week's guest has made it her mission to open up the conversation on mental health in the performing arts. Raffaella Covino has spent the past ten years working on the West End and internationally as a Dance Captain and Swing. She is also the founder and director of applause for thought which offers accessible mental health training and support to people in the performing arts. Raffaella joins Bronwyn on Singing Teachers' Talk to chat about all things mental health and what training you as a singing teacher can get.    KEY TAKEAWAYS After dealing with her own mental health issues, Raffaella found a passion for helping people overcome their mental health struggles. It was as if her eyes had been opened to the signs that someone is struggling and unwilling to talk about it. This led to the creation of Applause for Thought.  Applause for thought was launched on February 3rd 2019 and is now a triple award-winning Community Interest Company that facilitates lower-cost mental health, Support, Talks and Workshops, Accredited Mental Health Training, and Bespoke Consultancy to all those working in the arts and entertainment industry. The mental health practitioners working for Applause for Thought are all aware of the performing arts industry so you don't need to spend your time explaining to them what exactly it is you do. They know and understand the pressures you're under in your role.  The biggest industry specific trigger around mental health is burnout. When you're any kind of freelancer the work doesn't stop and when you're not working, you're trying to find the next thing.   Singing teachers can help and support performers through not just focusing on the skill, singing, but more of a focus on confidence and how our students feel. If you take a whole person approach and build confidence that will build them to be able to deal with the industry.    BEST MOMENTS ‘Mental health wasn't spoken about the way it is now'  ‘Education = Prevention'  ‘Mental health is so tricky because it seems invisible'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training  Guest Website: www.applauseforthought.com Social Media: Instagram: @applauseforthought Twitter: @ApplauseThought   ABOUT THE GUEST Raffaella Covino is a creative who has spent the last decade working as a Dance Captain/Associate and Swing across the West End, UK and Internationally. My success led me to the 42nd Street, Will Rogers Follies, and became the Dance Captain of the World Famous Radio City Rockettes. My Dancing career led me to choreography and choreographed the show 'Beats of Passion' at the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. On top of my career in health and fitness as well as my time as a business owner, dance team member and choreographer, I am a single mother of two beautiful children. I have done this while suffering hardship that led to unhealthy nutrition and poor choices in my life style. I walked this journey with just my two children and within a year and a half of making better choices, I lost 100 pounds. This has given me the confidence to stand tall and held the title of United States of America Ms. Nevada 2021. Are you living your BEST Life? If not, what is stopping you...you only have one life to live. In this segment, Debbie Freeman will discuss her tips and tricks to living her best life over 40. From her 4 am morning fitness routine, meal prepping, positive self-talk, and how to illuminate your unique sparkle. See video here - https://youtu.be/TzxMZAWLzZw WHO IS DEBBIE? At the early age of 19, I was an entrepreneur of my first dance studio. During my time as a dancer and business owner I was offered the opportunity to audition for the Atlanta Hawks NBA dance team competing against 400 girls and was awarded to be one of 12 members. My success led me to the 42nd Street, Will Rogers Follies, and became the Dance Captain of the World-Famous Radio City Rockettes. My Dancing career led me to choreography and choreographed the show 'Beats of Passion' at the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. On top of my career in health and fitness as well as my time as a business owner, dance team member and choreographer, I am a single mother of two beautiful children. I have done this while suffering hardship that led to unhealthy nutrition and poor choices in my lifestyle. I walked this journey with just my two children and within a year and a half of making better choices, I lost 100 pounds. This has given me the confidence to stand tall and held the title of United States of America Ms. Nevada 2021. I am now doing Master classes for students of all ages in modeling, interview, health, and self-awareness. I wish to empower women by inspiring them to fight through any fears or disbeliefs they may have and live their best lives. Live at the Lortel: An Off-Broadway Podcast

Preston Burger is an actor, advocate, and educator hell bent on leveling the playing field for people with disabilities in all societal domains he can. A performer and creator since childhood, Preston has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Children's Chorus (1998-1999 season); served as Dance Captain for Rachel Klein in her delightfully ghoulish dance-theater work The Tragedy of Maria Macabre at Dixon Place; danced a lead role in indie music video Fire To The Ground (The Forms, feat. Matt Berninger of The National); and had his original work selected for the Roundabout's Reverb Arts Festival (under the mentorship of Jerron Herman). Currently, Preston is on the Advisory Board of EPIC Players Neuroinclusive Theater Company (where he also participates as an actor and a mentor) and the Disability Advisory Council for BEAT Global. Outside of his artistic work, Preston is the Recruiter and Candidate Success Specialist for Integrate Autism Employment Advisors, a national nonprofit staffing and recruiting agency that helps Fortune 1000 companies build autism hiring programs. Before this, he served as the CUNY LEADS (Linking Employment, Academics, and Disability Services) Advisor at Bronx Community College for 5.5 years, a role in which he supported CUNY students with disabilities. While at BCC, Preston helped start the campus's chapter of the CUNY student advocacy group, the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD). Preston has been featured on PunkinFutz's Wednesdays Live! FB Live series; BronxNet's OPEN program; Manhattan Neighborhood Network's Disabilities Redefined with Dr. Vaigneur; and Access Champions podcast. Preston earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Minor in Theater & Dance from Princeton University; his Master of Science in Education from Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus; and his Advanced Certificate in Project Management from the CUNY School of Professional Studies.
