Learn how to monetize a podcast with John Lee Dumas.John Lee Dumas (@JohnLeeDumas) is the host of Entrepreneurs on Fire, an award winning podcast where he interviews inspiring Entrepreneurs. With over 2000 episodes, 1.3 million listens every month, and seven-figures of annual revenue, JLD is just getting started. After doing everything "the right way" - graduating college, being an officer in the army for 8 years, working in corporate finance, working with John Hancock, doing commercial real estate - he felt like he was stuck on a hamster wheel going nowhere and feeling miserable. He wanted to do work that he was inspired by and work that inspired others. He had his "ah-ha" moment while stuck in traffic in his car on the way to work when he ran out of podcasts to listen to because nobody was doing a 7-day a week show. JLD said "why not me?" and decided to start Entrepreneurs on Fire where he's interviewed Tony Robbins, Guy Kawasaki, Seth Godin, and Tim Ferriss … and, as they say, the rest is history; he proceeded to engrain himself as one of the best podcasters to ever do it.Visit John at https://www.eofire.com/.Episode webpage: https://JordanParis.com/ep164

I'm Jamin Brazil and you're listening to the Happy Market Research Podcast. Today my guest is Dyna Boen, President of Market Research Survata. Survata offers a technology platform that informs business decisions used by today's top brands, including GameStop, Clorox, Gardner and Disney, my favorite brand of all time. Dyna is a serial entrepreneur who has worked in all aspects of the marketing research space. Dyna, thank you so much for joining me today on Happy Market Research Podcast. [00:00:30] Thank you for having me, Jamin. I would say that I'm a Happy Market Researcher. [00:00:34] I love it. [00:00:36] So very smiley, happy market researcher. So I'm glad to be here. [00:00:40] We all are, we all are as long as we're making a payroll. What we found is our audience is really interested about what Survata is doing today, what you specifically – how you are specifically fitting in. But what I'm really digging is the background of what got you here. So could you tell us a little bit about what it is that your parents do and how that's informed what you're doing today? [00:01:05] Yes, absolutely. Well, my dad was an auto broker and he was in the car industry. And so, he's a very dynamic sales person. He's your quintessential car guy and I grew up with him owning his own business. SO also an entrepreneur. And so what he did was he bought fleets of rental cars from Hawaii and then sold them as used cars all over the mainland. And so for me, I got to travel with him, which going on a business trip to Hawaii is like how I thought business was done growing up. I'm a little spoiled. I'm looking back and I'm like wow, that was really fortunate. But I would get to travel with my dad when I was on school breaks and sit on business dinners that he was having, and just a lot of it was observing the way he did business in the Pacific Rim and my mom was a teacher and an educator. So my parents were always very supportive of education. [00:02:07] The sales side of things that your dad had, that sounds like directly it fed into, obviously, your marketing background. Did he use TV, radio, et cetera or was he more network-based distribution? [00:02:21] He was more network-based distribution I would say. We're very similar in that we're very – just social animals, both of us are. We like to talk to people, we like to network, we like to build relationships. And that to me, whether it's Survata or in the market research industry, that's what I enjoy most. We all spend a lot of time at work. My daughter will sometimes call me a workaholic, but it's because I love my job and I want that to be an example to her, that you can be a professional and love what you do, and it's about the people that you spend your time with every day, and life is short and we spend a lot of time at work. So if you can surround yourself by wonderful people and partners, and colleagues that support you and support them, I think that's pretty good life. [00:03:12] Yes, no more Mondays. So I was, I had a conversation with John Dumas, entrepreneur on Fire is like one of my aspirational podcasters. Got about a million listeners, million listeners, what I mean by that. He said, "Jamin, every day for me is Saturday." That's right, literally. I woke up this morning early, I couldn't wait to get in the car,

Focus on Your Awesome – Run YOUR Race We are all familiar with the saying that what we focus on is magnified. The things we spend our time thinking about become a reality for us, so why might I ask, do we so often focus on our weaknesses, the things we don’t feel like we’re good at? Let’s change that. We have a lot of awesome going on already. Stories are our lives in language. Welcome to the Love Your Story podcast. I’m Lori Lee, and I’m excited for our future together of telling stories, evaluating our own stories, and lifting ourselves and others to greater places because of our control over our stories. This podcast is about empowerment and giving you, the listener, ideas to work with in making your stories work for you. Story power serves you best when you know how to use it. In the Disney recreation of the events of the Triple Crown-winning horse and Secretariate’s incredible underdog triumph–in the movie Secretariate–there is a scene where Secretariate’s owner, Penny Chenery Tweedy is in the stable, nose to nose with her beloved horse who is just overcoming an injury before his big race. No one is certain how he’ll perform because he hasn’t been feeling well. She looks him straight in the eye and she says, “I’ve run my race by not giving up, (she had fought for the horse for funding, she’d put her families fortune on the line, she’s stood up against other horse owners in media discussions, she had stood up against family pressure in order to get Secretariate to this place, to these races.) “Now,” she continued, “it’s your time to run your race.” The movie ends with the Belmont Stakes race, the third and final race of the Triple Crown, in 1973, and Secretariate is expected to go nose to nose with his rival of the year, Shamm. About a minute into the race, these horses are neck and neck taking turns pulling slightly ahead of one another when Secretariate begins a pull away that at first leaves people scared because they don’t believe Secretariate can keep up that pace. They’re afraid he’ll wear down and not be able to keep the pace. Those watching the race go from excitement as the horses start out, to anger that the jockey is letting him go too fast too soon, to almost big-eyed quiet as they watch the impossible. Secretariate never falters, in fact, his stead speed increases as he leaves Shamm what feels like halfway around the course and wins by 25 lengths. Even those who don’t care about horse racing get tears in their eyes when watching the footage of this race because there is something about the power of that horse, running his own race, and pulling so far ahead, doing the impossible, and we get to sit and watch it happen. It’s one of those magical moments in history where your heart is simply caught in your throat and your joy and respect for that beautiful animal crowds out all other emotion. I share this scene with you because when Penny turned over all her expectations, told Secretariate that she had already won her race, now he simply got to run his best race, because he could, I felt a sense of freedom and understanding in my own race. I don’t need to run the same race as Chris Ducker or John Dumas or the other podcasters and online entrepreneurs. I can and should run my own race, born of my own strengths and my own insights and my own definition of success. I get to run my race. Secretariate got to run his race. Penny ran her race. What is your race? When someone says “Run YOUR Race,” what does it feel like to you? In episode 25 we talked about how when you bike you look where you want to go, not where you don’t want to go – you focus on the route around the rock, not on the rock that you want to miss. Because if you focus on the rock – you’ll hit it. Every time. With this in mind, it seems to me that focusing on our strengths is a way to shine, hone what we’re good at, and spend less time focusing on that thing or things we feel like we need to change. It’s
Josh Bauerle, an Ohio CPA that serves many clients including podcaster John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneur On Fire, joined us for this week's episode of Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. “CPA on Fire” Josh started his career by trying several different roles – cost accounting, financial advising, and public accounting – before deciding that developing his own practice was the ideal fit for him. He came from an entrepreneurial family, so although he and his wife had just become the parents of twin boys (!), the risk didn't thwart his determination. He talks a little about the early years, but it was when he started working with John Dumas of Entrepreneur On Fire that his technology clientele seems to have started to grow exponentially. As of the timing of this interview, almost all of his clients have some type of online business – with many being in the e-commerce sales industry. All Remote! One of the more interesting parts of this interview is when Josh gets to talking about the make-up of his current clientele. Due to the nature of how his practice has grown, he doesn't actually serve any local clients. All of his clients live in other cities. Therefore, the majority of their interaction is online via portals or Skype. In fact, even his contracted help is all remote. He has three team members that assist him with servicing his clients, all three of which work remotely. Positioning & branding One of the leading reasons we wanted to interview Josh was for his leading edge view of positioning and branding. Josh has built a unique practice focused on serving clients in a specific industry, and in a specific way. It can be difficult for many entrepreneurial CPAs to differentiate themselves in the market, so I think you will find this discussion with Josh very enlightening. Make sure you listen closely – you may even want to take notes. Although Josh says he isn't particularly tech-savvy, he does list a few tools he uses as well as processes that work well for him in this remote-based practice. I hope you enjoy! See you next week. They were able to be featured for less cost because they were a social good company. The market for repurposed t-shirts as quilt already existed, but Project Repat excels because they have affordable pricing and has more ad spend. There are a variety of factors that can influence its value. It can be prudent to start small as an inexperienced entrepreneur – E-Squared, Eran’s clothing and coffee based retail business was a labor of love and learning. By building and integrating a successful marketplace into his crowdsourcing drag-and-drop business, Eran was able to increase its value. But it quickly switched because clients preferred paying a SAAS model. 10:11 – At its peak, the crowdsourcing business had about 37 large customers and several small ones. 10:36 – The highest MR (marginal revenue) for the crowdsourcing business was about 250K a month. 11:45 – One of Eran’s strengths is building a successful marketplace, a skill that helped him strengthen his drag-and-drop crowdsourcing business. 12:29 – Nathan and Eran discuss tying the valuation of a SAAS business to annual recurring revenue. 13:37 – Eran gives an example of why a MRR SAAS based business shouldn’t be valuated with only a multiplier. 14:35 – 7X to 10X is a good multiplier on ARR (annual recurring revenue) for a SAAS based business being sold, but it hinges on a variety of factors. 15:43 – While Nathan believes that anything other than the multiplier is only speculation, Eran believes that the speculation affects valuation significantly. 16:01 – Eran explains/defends his stance on speculation’s impact on valuation. 18:05 – Eran will be back on the show to talk more about Springleap. Often it’s prudent to hold off on any announcements before seeing a contract. LOI’s aren’t created equally. Some of them are offers of pure cash while others include other things like stock in a publicly traded company. Even after a signed LOI, many deals fall through. Due diligence is required for the actual exchange of money for a company. Time Stamped Show Notes: 01:00 – If you haven’t caught up already, one of Nathan’s biggest competitors has offered to buy Heyo. 01:26 – One concern is that the offer may not be serious, only a ploy for information. 01:51 – Ken Armijo calls in to offer advice: before taking the buyers seriously, wait until they produce a contract. 03:02 – Nathan plans to obtain LOI’s (Letter of Intent) from companies that might be interested in buying Heyo and leveraging competition to raise its price. 03:17 – Another Top Tribe listener weighs in on what Nathan should do with the company. 04:36 – Nathan called CEO’s to talk about Heyo’s desirability so he could better understand its selling points. 05:06 – Nathan talks with Jim Risner of Votigo, one of Heyo’s main competitors in the SMB space (Small Business Space) about obtaining a LOI (Letter of Intent). 05:51 – With one LOI in hand from Jim, Nathan began emailing other CEO’s to gauge other interest in Heyo. He obtained four LOI’s from interested companies. 06:30 – The LOI’s weren’t created equally – some of them are pure cash and others include stock in a publicly traded company. 07:27 – Jim Risner talks about Votigo and why they would want to acquire Heyo. 09:10 – Votigo’s been thinking about entering Heyo’s space for a while, expanding into the SMB market. Buying the company would be a big head start into the space. 10:21 – Bethany London calls in to express her thoughts that selling Heyo, a long-time dream of Nathan’s, might not be all that it’s cracked up to be. 11:34 – One of Nathan’s friends from Virginia Tech’s Pamplin School of Business offers his thoughts that Nathan may have outgrown Heyo. 13:58 – Nathan signed the LOI - he’s selling Heyo. 14:22 – Many deals fall through even after a signed LOI. 15:21 – Tune in next Monday to find out what happens. Borrowell keeps the loans it processes off its books as it’s only a marketplace for buying and selling loans – not processing the loans themselves. Like in the case of Borrowell, growing a business is never straightforward – Burrowell has to examine all its loans carefully so they don’t pay the price. Time Stamped Show Notes: 01:00 – Nathan’s introduction to today’s show 01:40 – Jeff joins the show. 01:50 – Borrowell is a marketplace lender. They offer online loans to high credit Canadians. 03:37 – Customer acquisition cost is Burrowell’s key metric when measuring their progress. 04:42 – Borrowell isn’t bootstrapped – they’ve raised 5.4 million by the end of last year. 05:31 – Jeff talks about loan capital and equity in Borrowell. 06:22 – Borrowell is only a marketplace in which people buy and sell loans. Investors such as banks provide loan capital. 08:46 – Growth is tricky because Borrowell doesn’t want to process unreliable loans quickly that might sink them in the future. 09:36 – Jeff is available on Twitter: @jeff_goldenberg. 10:05 – Borrowell is closing in on half a billion loan applications in Canada. 11:04 – Jeff’s favorite growth tool is known as Engineering as Marketing. Which is when a service or product is made free and used as a lead generator. Being an entrepreneur is an exciting challenge – one has to be able to think on their feet, make important decisions, and surround oneself with forward thinking peers. Vroom’s model relies on flipping low-mileage used cars for a fast profit – in order to do so they needed to hire professionals who knew cars very well. Time Stamped Show Notes: 01:00 – Nathan’s introduction to today’s show 01:37 – Allon joins the show. 01:46 – Vroom made about 900 million in revenue in 2015. 02:01 – Vroom is an online car retailer. They sell, buy, and appraise cars in a haggle-free environment. 04:06 – In December, Vroom sold about 5K vehicles. Often they sell low-mileage, well-kept vehicles, which brings their average price point to 30K per automobile. It has about 500 employees. 08:50 – Allon attributes Vroom’s success to being able to hire people who understand cars very well so they can be fixed and turned quickly. 09:26 – They also grew by acquiring a company that’d been in the same field since 2003. 10:30 – Allon wanted to get into Wix as an investor – it went public about 7 years after being founded. He left the board before the company went public. 12:11 – Being an entrepreneur is challenging as one has to be able to think on their feet, make decisions, and surround oneself with forward-thinking peers. 13:42 – Vroom relied on its high volume model in order to be a viable business like Amazon or Walmart. 14:27 – Allon talks about equity and relying on your board. 15:30 – Allon invested his own personal money to build Vroom’s capital when it first started. 18:21 – Famous Five Resources Mentioned: Edgar – Nathan uses Edgar instead of other scheduling tools for Twitter because Edgar cycles through content over and over (buffer/others you have to re-input content over and over – time consuming). His conversion rates are very good in his field. 08:31 – For letting him use their list, JV partners split the profits with Joseph 50/50. JV partners are usually strapped for time and need expertise on software like Scrivener. 09:43 – Joseph hired a researcher to compile a list of 200 possible names of interested influencers who’d be interested in a Scrivener teaching service in the writer community. 11:50 – Learn Scrivener Fast is hoping to double revenue for 2016. The demand for the service remains high and Joseph’s current list has 60K emails. 12:15 – One can build a product and then use the product to gain targeted subscribers which lets one partner more efficiently with other JV’s. 12:42 – Nathan plans on asking for Scrivener’s revenue on a future episode to compare to Joseph’s. He’s willing to bet the teaching service makes more than the software itself. 14:12 – Customers who buy Joseph’s services don’t necessarily own Scrivener, but it’s usually a big selling point that the software can be confusing to use. 15:00 – Scrivener is behind Learn Scrivener Fast, but they haven’t done a JV together. 15:42 – The CEO of Scrivener is scheduled to be on The Top on February 18th – Nathan is thinking about trying to buy the company. 16:55 – Famous Five Resources Mentioned: Edgar – Nathan uses Edgar instead of other scheduling tools for Twitter because Edgar cycles through content over and over (buffer/others you have to re-input content over and over – time consuming). Landon pivoted his old assets in the SEO business to create Ontraport – he also used some of his personal savings to keep the business going before it blew up. It’s hard to pull yourself out of career mode once you’ve settled into it. Whenever possible, it’s beneficial to expand your horizons by traveling. Time Stamped Show Notes: 01:00 – Nathan’s introduction to today’s show 02:05 – Landon joins the show. 03:25 – When he was 25, Landon wanted to find something meaningful to do and was attracted to the technological renaissance in Silicon Valley at the time. 03:20 – The main reason businesses in the info-marketing space don’t go into software is that the development side can be intimidating. 04:22 – Landon bought and sold stock for himself on Wall Street – he stopped after 2001. 05:30 – Being in the SEO business was a bad move because Google would eventually take away all the search results. 07:19 – Before Ontraport gained traction, hundreds of thousands of dollars went into the company from Landon’s own pocket. He didn’t take a salary either because he had savings. 08:04 – The business has about 10K clients and made about 500K four years in a row. 10:36 – Ontraport’s mission is to remove the burden of technology for entrepreneurs so they can focus on building the business they love. 11:21 – Ontraport’s services have gotten cheaper because they can afford to do it. 12:07 – The average customer pays 400$ a month, but the current value is now offset by a free service the company offers. 13:09 – Ontraport has about 6K customers paying about 200-300$ and 100 employees. 13:50 – Between 14-20 million dollars in annual returning revenue. 16:40 – If Oracle offered to buy Ontraport for 100 million, Landon would decline. Though the money would guarantee stability, the business is in a very favorable position right now. 18:17 – Landon would consider 50 million for a portion of Ontraport. 19:00 – Famous Five Resources Mentioned: Edgar – Nathan uses Edgar instead of other scheduling tools for Twitter because Edgar cycles through content over and over (buffer/others you have to re-input content over and over – time consuming). It’s important for new businesses to get connected with influencers in their specific market. This can be achieved through social media among other means. Edgar is a social media scheduling tool that automatically publishes content from libraries at set times in the day to maximize audience interaction. Time Stamped Show Notes: 01:00 – Nathan’s introduction to today’s show 01:32 – Laura joins the show. 02:19 – Edgar is an automated way to showcase a library of content on social media sites. 03:20 – The main reason businesses in the info-marketing space don’t go into software is that the development side can be intimidating. 04:25 – Laura is married to a Ruby on Rails developer so she got lucky being able to make Edgar. However, those with online marketing expertise have much to offer in a partnership with a software developer. 05:22 – Developers need marketers in the same way marketers need developers. 07:10 – Before Edgar, Laura had already built a list, but she also went around getting connected to influencers in the market. Twitter was useful for this particular reason. 08:25 – Edgar was launched in the middle of 2014 and her list was about 80K from her previous business. 09:11 – If you want to learn how to build a list, go listen to episode 35 of The Top. 09:21 – Edgar was intentionally priced higher than its competitors for two reasons It was bootstrapped and couldn’t support loads of customers using the service for free. They wanted to differentiate that Edgar was a business tool, not just a social media tool. 11:24 – The business currently has just under 4K customers, making a topline revenue of about 180K a month. Most customers pay about 49$ a month. 11:58 – Edgar spends money on content marketing and paid acquisition (mostly Facebook ads.) They spend about 30K a month on Facebook ads. 12:40 – Edgar’s retention rate is about 95% month to month. 13:26 – Laura talks about why a bootstrap company has to be careful calculating lifetime values. 15:06 – Edgar’s biggest concern is helping customers utilize its services in an easy-to-use manner. 16:42 – Using Edgar for the past 6 months, Nathan’s gotten 3,286 clicks from Twitter updates that were published through Edgar. 19:00 – Famous Five Resources Mentioned: Edgar – Nathan uses Edgar instead of other scheduling tools for Twitter because Edgar cycles through content over and over (buffer/others you have to re-input content over and over – time consuming). Ashley Bridget ran an immensely successful advertising campaign in which they gave away free bracelets – the average cart value during the campaign was 25$ from other products being purchased alongside the bracelets and the business got about 25K new customers. One of e-commerce’s advantages is not needing many employees. Ashley Bridget later sought professionals to enhance their business and increase the quality of their product. Time Stamped Show Notes: 01:00 – Nathan’s introduction to today’s show 01:24 – Scott joins the show. 01:41 – Scott Hutchison helped build Ashley Bridget which sells women’s jewelry almost exclusively on the website. 03:45 – In 2013, Ashley Bridget made 1.5 million in revenue, 4.5 million in 2014, and 8.2 million in 2015. 04:37 – To generate its first sales, the business advertised on Instagram. Accounts that list an email address below their bio are likely willing to do business. 05:16 – The business had a successful campaign starting out giving out free bracelets that got very popular. The shipping fee covered the cost of making the bracelet and so they broke even on the campaign. 05:58 – They got about 25K customers in 1.5 months just from the free bracelet promotion. 06:43 – When customers got the bracelet for free, they usually added other things to their cart. 06:59 – Ashley Bridget advertises with a combination of Google AdWords, Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook. 07:09 – The company’s started focusing on retention instead of advertising by increasing product quality. 07:54 – 20% of 2015’s revenue went into advertising (roughly 160K.) 08:45 – Initially the business relished e-commerce because it didn’t require a lot of employees, but now that they’ve expanded they’re focusing on hiring professionals. 09:23 – Scott talks about why the referral system is successful for his business. 10:43 – The business averages about 25K orders per month. 11:14 – In 2014, the business bought a warehouse, but it was difficult to manage. 12:36 – The business is lucky to have an experienced senior advisor who affords them a good network of Venture capital investors. 13:43 – The name Ashley Bridget came from what the founders thought would be an ‘ideal girl.’ 17:16 – Famous Five Resources Mentioned: Edgar – Nathan uses Edgar instead of other scheduling tools for twitter because Edgar cycles through content over and over (buffer/others you have to re-input content over and over – time consuming). John Lee Dumas is an inspiration to many people across the world, who hear him talk on a daily basis with entrepreneurs, businessman and the movers and shakers of the world. He is the host of the award winning daily podcast, Entrepreneur On Fire, which since its birth back in September 2012, has lead the way in what can be achieved in the world of podcasting. John Lee Dumas podcast interviewJohn Lee Dumas was not the obvious choice to become the man behind the mic, but as we always see on Join Up Dots, when you look back over the life of the person, you can see how the dots join up clearly. And this is certainly the case with John Lee Dumas. John Dumas was born as he says in his own words “A simple country boy from the State of Maine” and throughout his childhood was a child who was an extremely active and popular child. The son of a preacher man, John Lee Dumas, or John Lee as his parents called him liked nothing more than hitting the school playground everyday, and indulging in kickball with his mates. And growing up in a state where his childhood years were spent on lakes in the summer and ski mountains in the winters, it is with little surprise that when his childhood years had past, he didn't actively seek a job behind a desk, which is where you can find him much of the time working today on Entrepreneur On Fire, but instead went for something far more active. Active in body, and active for his country, as in 2002 he entered the military and for the next eight years, John Lee Dumas performed the role as Captain, and Armor and logistics officer for Uncle Sam. And this is one of those dots on the Join Up Dots timeline, that helps pinpoint the success of Entrepreneur on Fire.john leed dumas podcast interview Whilst in the military, John Lee Dumas was trained in structure, planning, organisation and effectiveness, all brilliantly useful as a soldier, but equally useful as a high flying Entrepreneur. So many people point to the success of his seven day per week podcast Entrepreneur On Fire, and ask how can you record so many episodes and not burn out? Which John Lee Dumas quite candidly will point out, is down to the skills that he learnt during his time in the armed forces, which he has utilised to such brilliant effect with Entrepreneur On Fire and his other income producing business spin offs. An interesting fact about John Lee's time in the military was that he became the first platoon in America to perform a tour of duty in Iraq, during the conflict there in the early two thousands. For thirteen months, he worked tirelessly supporting his platoon, and building up his commitment to the task, until it was time to say goodbye to Captain John Lee Dumas, and say hello to the civilian version, that was to become anything but as effective as his previous incarnation. The transition from the military was not an easy one to perform, and John Lee Dumas points out in his own words, that he was searching for something that could replace the self worth that he had felt previously. As he says “My transition was brutal and different compared to others'. I thought I had everything mapped out. My father is a lawyer so I immediately thought that law would be a great profession for me to move into. I applied to law school and got accepted for the fall of next year. Before that I knew I would spend the year traveling. What I should have looked at people out there in the civilian world who were veterans and non-veterans that were actually doing things that inspired me. I should have tried to find out how I could have learned from these people. I wish I turned it in that direction.” So in those words we can already see the makings of the John Lee Dumas podcast king that we can see today. Before Entrepreneur On Fire was even an idea to be hatched, he was looking for structure, organization, and the ability to inspire and be inspired. He was prepared to ignite, although at that stage John Lee Dumas was still looking in completely the wrong direction to find that spark. Interestingly across the world, there is a similar path to how we live our lives, and it has become very much a theme of Join Up Dots. When growing up we get told what to do, by parents, teachers, mentors, scoutmasters, the list goes on. And so it's with little surprise that the time comes for us to make a decision as to what we want to do with our lives, and we have no idea. How can we know, when for the first twenty years we have barely made a decision for ourselves? And that is where John Lee Dumas found himself, and after a gap year travelling the world and feeling lost and liberated all at the same time he returned, and entered into the world's favourite career destination. He followed that path that he had already seen travelled by his father, and enrolled to become a lawyer, which turned out to be one of the world's worst mistakes, at least it did for John Lee Dumas. John Dumas seems to react strongly to emotions and feelings, and will fight back quicker and more determinedly than most people. Most would discover that they didn't like something slowly, and then decide to remove themselves from that pain slowly too. John, realised on that very first day that he hated it, and knew that what he had enrolled for was a massive error of judgement on his part. Without any idea of what he wanted to do, or what he wanted to become he quit at the end of the first semester. He had to face his parents, his friends, his colleagues, ex-students, and worse of all himself. In very short time he had gone from being a Captain in the military that people looked up to, and reacted strongly to his positive messages to someone that he couldn't even respect himself. John Lee Dumas, here is another one of your dots. The self-worth that you now feel and strive everyday to grow within your listeners was gone. You were being given the clearest clue that you were the ideal avatar to what you would become. You were a person that needed to feel “On Fire” and love every second of your life. Self-worth, passion, a clear message, followers, structure and organisation had been planted within him, and very soon those dots would explode, and Entrepreneur On Fire would be realized. But still we have a few more dots to cover before we get to the true path of John Lee Dumas, Host of the award winning “Entrepreneur On Fire”. John Lee Dumas Podcast InterviewIn 2008, John joined the company John Hancock and set about rebuilding his life, confidence and belief that he had something worthwhile to offer. Entering the world of corporate finance John Lee Dumas, found that he had a natural talent for making money and quickly became seen as someone new to look out for. For eighteen months his star was on the rise, and the decision makers of John Hancock knew that they had someone that was worth investing in. They had an employee on fire! But, as we see time and time again with John Lee Dumas, if it doesnt feel right, then no matter how much money or success is coming his way it still won't make it right. And on the day when he realised that he had survived a series of staff cuts during the downturn in the economy, the heads of John Hancock told them all “If you are not with us 100% then walk away because we are only going to work with people that want us”. And instead of being relieved that he had a job, a career path, and a company that was willing to make big decisions, John Lee Dumas took what seems a remarkable decision. A great one with hindsight, but one that from the outsider's viewpoint appears as almost lunacy. He realised that he wasn't 100% with them, and although now earning a good income, with a new condo in Boston, told the company “Enough is enough” and walked away into the unknown and complete insecurity again. Different roles came and went during the next four years, and John Lee Dumas traveled the length and breadth of the country, performing roles that were not him. He switched roles, direction, and salaries and no matter what he tried the path that we had already seen was screaming out for him, was just not visible to his own eyes. He didn't realise that he had a mission to inspire. He had words waiting to be spoken to a global audience. He had followers ready to be led. And then one day, in the most unexpected of locations, the tyres of John Lee Dumas's car rolled another two inches and found the path that he was looking for. On just another seemingly normal drive to perform the role of Commercial Real Estate broker for the The Dunham Group, the big dot arrived in John's life. The tyres had found traction on what would become the starting point of Entrepreneur On Fire. During all the time driving around America, John lee Dumas had fortuitously consumed podcasts to pass the time, and to help him feel inspired and motivated. He loved them, and had his favorites that were to be his daily companions, as he burnt up the miles of American roadway. The familiar voices, that had become the soundtrack to his life. But one day, these friends fell quiet. The voices that had accompanied him for hour upon hour, now had nothing more to say. He looked through his MP3 player and realised that he had run out. Such was his desire for listen to the learnings, speeches or just plain fun and informative conversations that John Lee Dumas had exhausted his supply. He was consuming quicker than the hosts could deliver the content. “Why can't there be daily shows seven day per week?” mused John Lee Dumas, as he switched on the radio to listen to several hours of Miley Cyrus and musical fluff. BOOM!!! He had found it. He had joined up his dots, and found his path. If no one else was delivering content seven days per week, then why couldn't he? Why couldn't he be the first guy to do the unthinkable and create more content than people could consume. And with that thought, lots of uncertainty, and no idea what he would even call this vision, Entrepreneur On Fire was born. Now several years later, the humble beginnings of this award winning podcast are far to be seen in the rear view mirror of John Lee Dumas car. With downloads of 1,000,000 per month, income exceeding $250,000 per month, and keynote presentations, and media appearances across the world, John Dumas is on fire. He has joined up all his dots, and now seven day per week is helping others find their own. So do you think that you can push through so much uncertainty and disappointment? Do you think that you have what it takes to follow the voices in your own head, and create your own path? Well if you do then there is one thing to say. On this episode of the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, I interviewed my good friend, Chris Ducker. This interview came at a perfect time, because the evening after completing the interview, I got on a plane to the Philippines to speak at Chris' event, Tropical Think Tank. This was an exciting trip for me because not only is this my first trip to the Philippines, I also had the opportunity to speak with some some really fantastic people, including Pat Flynn, John Dumas, Greg Hickman and Natalie Sisson, and of course Chris Ducker himself, so it was a lot of fun. On today’s show, we are talking about the power of virtual support and outsourcing. This is an important topic for me, because I recently learned a valuable lesson, something I did not believe for so long until I finally experienced it personally in my business. So many successful people I look up to have told me that it is possible to work less and make a bigger impact, which includes bigger profits. That was hard for me to believe because it went against everything I knew about hard work paying off. However, on episode 23, I talked about how I experienced this very thing in 2013. I tell you this because with the right support, you truly can do less and make more. That’s why I think the topic today is so valuable to anyone building a business online. I’ve actually had Chris on the show before and so today we are going to dive a bit deeper into this topic. For those of you who do not know Chris, Chris is a serial entrepreneur, virtual staffing expert, blogger, podcaster and author of the new book Virtual Freedom (which is a FANTASTIC book and one I highly recommend.) In this episode, right from the start, Chris gets personal about a recent experience he had with burnout - and how his burnout did not effect his business AT ALL. Also, Chris dives into the mindset and mechanics around expanding your team with virtual support. The mindset requires a different way of looking at your business and your role in your business, seeing the value of letting go of some of it, and leveraging it by entrusting certain aspects of it to someone else. The mechanics include specific strategies and tools you can use to maximize your outsourcing experience. In this episode, here’s what we’ll cover: Mindset and the mechanics of expanding your team The value of letting go and leveraging Chris' burnout, and what he did about it The importance of taking care of yourself and switching off regularly What entrepreneurs should do with the time they save by outsourcing How a virtual team kept Chris' business going in the midst of his burnout The importance of entrepreneurs going off the grid from time to time What super hero syndrome is, and how to overcome it The impact of ego on your business What will defeat the benefits of your outsourcing efforts How you can make more by working less How to counter the feeling that you can do things faster yourself than telling someone else to do it The biggest problem when training your virtual staff How to throw little curve balls to your VA, and why you should Why you need to take care of your team ahead of all else Whether you should outsource locally or overseas The 3 basic ways Chris communicates with his staff The point where a lot of businesses begin to fail and how to avoid it And so much more! When training your virtual staff, the biggest challenge you'll run into is yourself [Tweet This]

On this episode of the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, we talk all about creating a brand new podcast. My special guest is a recent Best of 2013 iTunes award winner, John Dumas of Entrepreneur on Fire. His show is unique in that he broadcasts seven days per week, which takes a crazy commitment! John has interviewed over 425 people to date and his interviews tell the stories of entrepreneurs who have “made it” in their niche. The stories of his guests are inspiring to say the least and help others out there who are looking to take their own entrepreneurial leap. I wanted to create this episode at this specific time because at the time of this recording, I’ve been podcasting for almost a full year, and it’s been an extremely rewarding experience. I LOVE podcasting. It’s opened so many doors for me, introduced me to an entirely new audience, and has allowed me to expand my brand beyond my Facebook trainings. It’s also given me more confidence in my business and has created opportunities for me that I would not have been given had I not created this show. I highly recommend podcasting to anyone that is looking to expand their brand and take things beyond their blog and website. This episode is extremely valuable. John Lee Dumas has been podcasting on his Entrepreneur On Fire podcast since July, 2012. For the past year, he has made a 6-figure income from podcasting and he is just getting started. In this podcast, we get to know John and what his background was like and how he got into Entrepreneurship. Originally, I […]
John Lee Dumas started his Entrepreneur on Fire podcast in June of 2012 (about a year ago). Fast forward and John now has a podcast that is in the top 5 of business podcasts in iTunes. He is making 18,000 a month, reaching HUNDRED of THOUSANDS of people each month in over 145 countries. He did it using the organizational tools and courage he learned in the Armed forces (he served 13 months in Iraq) and with passion that is infectious. He was consuming a large about of podcasts in the car, but he needed more content. What did he do? He filled his own void by creating the podcast he wanted to listen to. Your Podcasts Downloads Stats All In One Place - Stitcher News [3:00] Stitcher announced that they will "pinging" your media host. In a memo that was sent out they outlined the changes as follows: You should begin to see a change in your stats via your hosting provider dashboard when our iOS update is live in the App Store within the next few days. The magnitude of the change will vary based on the specific show but should be noticeable immediately via your hosting provider’s metrics dashboard. We are also updating the Stitcher Partner Portal to reflect this change. We will keep you posted on timing but anticipate seeing this new Download number included in you Stitcher metrics within the next few weeks. The old Downloads stat, which was measuring actual listens, will still be in the partner portal but relabeled “Listens” This means that we no longer have to login to (for example) Libsyn.com or Blubrry.com (two of the top media hosting companies) and then later also check into Stitcher. This will make is easier to quote numbers to potential sponsors. Congratulations Marcus Couch [7:21] If you are a regular listener of the School of Podcasting then you know Marcus Couch and I go way back to the early days of Podcasting with companies like Mevio, Juice Software, and iRiver recorders. Marcus is an SEO expert and a Wordpress Guru. He wanted to get more traction in the Wordpress World. His goal was to get on to the dashboard of every Wordpress user and this month he landed there. How? By doing what Marcus preaches - creating good content. He has his music show the Scene Zine, and recently became a co-host of Wordpress Plugins A to Z (one of my favorite podcasts). You an now read him on the official Wordpress Tavern blog. Congrats to Marcus. John Dumas of the Entrepreneur on Fire Podcast - Light Up the Sky! [9:02] John Dumas is the passionate podcaster behind the microphone on Entrepreneur On Fire. He is also the author of the Book Podcast Launch, and is now rolling out an inner circle mastermind group call Fire Nation Elite. In today's interview you will get inside the mind of John and see his commitment to his audience. You will see where his drive is to inspire his audience to take action. You will hear how he is building his audience through dedication, commitment, and a determination to build his audience (called "The Fire Nation") one person at a time. John shares what lessons he learned during his 13 months in IRAQ. "It's better to make a good decision now then make a great decision later." John spent $3,000 to hire a personal mentor (Jaime Tardy) and says if you don't have that much to invest in your podcast start up that you could check out master mind or online groups (I'm a big fan of some of the groups on Google+, LinkedIn). A One on one coach can be helpful because of the personalized approach. Mastermind groups (which you might find at meetup.com) may get you in contact with other people and become a networking opportunity. [23:55]Entrepreneur on Fire had 267,000 unique downloads in May of 2013 and June should go over 300,000. [25:25] My favorite part of the interview is when John goes to tell me some new news from Apple. He doesn't say, "This is something my audience doesn't even know yet." He doesn't say "This is something the fire nation isn't aware of." He says "I haven't even told fire nation," and to me it shows how John thinks of his audience as ONE person. John talks about the importance of having an "avatar" of your audience (picture your audience member), and then talk to that person. John asks the same questions to every guest on his show. This accomplishes two things. You know what's coming, and you never know what you're going to get (because each guest answers them differently). John has got some great guests like Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss on his show. How? He caught them when they had books available and were on publicity tours. [35:40]Industry Standard Podcast CPM Sponsors came to John when was seen in the top rankings of iTunes. According to John the industry standard is: $18 cpm (per thousand downloads) for a 15 second preroll at the beginning of your podcast. $25 cpm for a 60 second spot in the middle of your podcast. John in the second quarter of 2013 was getting 8,000 downloads per episode. This calculates to $300 per episode - per sponsor. John had two sponsors per show. This means he was making $600 per episode. John does 30 episodes a month, so he made $18,000 a month. His sponsors are signing up for the third quarter (which shows that podcast sponsorship works). John has his mastermind group that you can join at firenationelite.com John released a book Podcast Launch which is spreading his brand. John is using a Private Facebook group to manage his membership/mastermind group. John's Weekly Schedule Mondays - He had 8 straight interviews on every single Monday. He was up to midnight editing. Tuesday - Wide open. Wednesday - Wide open. Dinner with friends. Thursday - Interviews on other podcasts. Friday - Fire nation elite members. Saturday - Fire nation elite interviews before going to visit family Sunday - Splicing entrepreneur on fire interviews. It sure would be nice if we could all learn to be more effective leaders without making any mistakes. However, while none of us would wish for mistakes, many of us learn the most from past missteps. In this episode, I talk about the value of mistakes and highlight six mistakes that I have made as the host of this show. I discuss the mistakes that I made in starting my first business many years ago and what I learned from these mistakes. I the more recent past, here are the six mistakes that I've made hosting this show: 1) Being too structured I mention the book Yes to the Mess: Surprising Leadership Lessons from Jazz by Frank Barrett that was featured on a recent HBR Ideacast. "If you're not making a mistake, it's a mistake." -Miles Davis One of my mentors once said, "Any strength overused, becomes a liability." 2) Assuming everyone listens the way I do We have listeners on Zune, iTunes, Stitcher, and BlackBerry - and even more places than those. 3) Forgetting the reason behind the goal 4) Driving the agenda myself Upcoming shows on mentoring, lessons from changing companies, and stories about great leaders are all listener suggestions 5) Not sharing enough specific stories I started to turn the corner a bit with episode #48: How to Lead When Someone Is Driving You Nuts 6) Not being engaged with people Why the list of 100 is gone What others mistakes have I made?
