Kunstner, arkitekt og kurator Annine Birkeland (65) har i ti år vært direktør for Bergen Kjøtt, et populært kulturhus i Bergen hvor mer enn 300 musikere og kunstnere har hatt sin arbeidsplass, og hvor Annine gikk under kallenavnet Dronningen. Bergen Kjøtt kjempet hun for i flere år, og for å bevare det har hun vært gjennom mer enn 30 rettssaker. Datteren, fotograf og samtidskunstner Tonje Bøe Birkeland (34), som er utdannet ved Kunst- og Designhøgskolen i Bergen, begynte for over ti år siden med kunstprosjektet «The Characters». Hun har reist til steder som Grønland, i Gobi-ørkenen i Mongolia og i Bhutan, for å fotografere seg selv i naturlandskap, for å iscenesette seg selv som fiktive kvinnelige oppdagelsesreisende. Bildene har blitt utstilt i Skandinavia, i flere land i Europa og i USA. De to har et tett koblet liv og kunstnerliv: Tonje har jobbet for moren sin på Bergen Kjøtt, Annine har blitt med Tonje på fjellturer som assistent. Hvordan er det å jobbe sammen, som mor og datter? Hva gir det dem, dette livet i kunsten? Hvordan har Annine klart seg gjennom 30 rettssaker og hva gjør hun når det røyner på?
