Send us a textPrivate equity, private debt – private markets are absolutely the flavour of the day. Yet, despite the headlines and eye-catching numbers, very little discussion is taking place about governance in this context. In this podcast, Dr Sabine Dembkowski, Founder and Managing Partner, is joined by Dr Eelco Fiole. He has more than 30 years of international finance experience, including two decades as Non-Executive Director, CFO, and CEO in alternative investments with teams in Zurich, London, New York, and Singapore. He also holds more than eight advanced degrees and is a true polymath with special expertise in investment governance.“Private market investing comes with a lot of issues.“Eelco reports that over the next five years, private markets are expected to double to $30 trillion USD. Private investors now invest alongside traditional institutions. Yet serious issues remain, including complex structures, valuation challenges, opacity, layers of leverage, and enormous asymmetries of information. “Governance is work, and when that work is being done, trust also develops.”To Eelco, governance is a key factor in creating trust for LPs and GPs. Both must contribute to building a solid governance framework. For LPs, remember that greed is not a strategy. Instead, use governance structures as a filtering tool to address issues of valuation, transparency, and conflicts of interest. For GPs, good governance helps attract capital. Eelco noticed that the smartest GPs use well-structured governance agreements to differentiate themselves, back up big promises, and showcase how they plan to protect investors. “It's all about incentives.“In Eelco's experience, many trust-based issues can be resolved by examining the incentives at play. Who is getting paid, when are they being paid, and how are those payments structured? Following the money and understanding who benefits in various scenarios is key to effective governance. On a practical level, this means building desired behaviours into the documentation. “Every investment is situational.“Eelco feels every investment has its own unique characteristics. As a result, “off the shelf” legal documents may not be sufficient. Custom-crafted or heavily adapted documents that cover the legal and economic variations of the investment, investment team, and market are key. The same is true for individuals who want a seat at the table. Private markets are highly specialised and nuanced. Only individuals who can add value in specific ways will be welcomed. “If I cannot have proper representation of the interest, then I'm not going to do it.” Eelco sees many cases where things go wrong, where highly concentrated investors are excluded, or where LP committees have no power. He is not calling for regulators to step in, but for boards to thoughtfully use governance structures to create checks and balances.The three top takeaways from our conversation for effective boards are:1.     Governance is work.2.    For GPs, understand the mechanics of trust and its role in attracting capital. 3.    Standard legal documentation is not enough. Met een nieuwe garde Kamerleden die beginnen, vonden vertrekkende parlementariërs het noodzakelijk om een oproep te doen aan media en Haagse journalisten: doe niet allemaal hetzelfde verslag van de ophef van de dag. Oud-Kamerlid Michiel van Nispen van de SP sprak deze onvrede uit, in de hoop dat het journalistieke 'kluitjesvoetbal' eens zou stoppen. Journalist Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal begrijpt het punt van Van Nispen, maar hekelt het "op één hoop gooien" van alle media. "Ik vind ook dat er te veel microfoons staan. Maar ON stelt andere vragen dan Nieuwsuur, bijvoorbeeld", legt Bosch van Rosenthal uit. Volgens programmamaker Nadia Moussaid gaat het ook te vaak over het politieke "spel" en niet genoeg over de inhoud. "Het is alsof je naar House of Cards aan het kijken bent." Tegelijkertijd doen politici er zelf ook aan mee, meent Bosch van Rosenthal. 

Op 14 november, Wereld Diabetes Dag, opent bij het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC) een onderzoekscentrum dat de zoektocht naar genezing van diabetes type 1 moet versnellen: het Cure One Lab. Het lab is een intitiatief van Stichting DON en LUMC. In Nederland leven ruim 100.000 mensen met deze auto-immuunziekte, waarbij het eigen afweersysteem de cellen vernietigt die insuline aanmaken. Zonder insuline kunnen patiënten hun bloedsuiker niet reguleren en zijn zij dagelijks afhankelijk van sensoren, pompen en injecties. Een genezende behandeling bestaat nog niet – maar komt die nu dichterbij? In deze aflevering spreekt presentator Nina van den Dungen met twee sleutelpersonen in die zoektocht: Prof. dr. Eelco de Koning, hoogleraar diabetologie aan het LUMC en hoofd van het nieuwe Cure One Lab. Rens Vandeberg, Chief Impact Officer bij het Diabetes Fonds, dat het onderzoek financieel ondersteunt. De Koning legt uit hoe onderzoekers met stamceltechnologie insulineproducerende cellen willen maken die niet worden afgestoten door het immuunsysteem – een stap die genezing voor veel meer mensen mogelijk kan maken. En dat terwijl Jim de kliniek nog wel zo zorgvuldig dacht te hebben uitgekozen. Jim doneerde anoniem in de jaren ‘80 en Eelco doneerde na 2004. Hij is dus een bekende donor. Beiden dachten ze zelf geen gezin te stichten met eigen kinderen en ‘Wat kan je dan beter doen, dan andere mensen, die wel kinderen willen maar ze niet kunnen krijgen, aan kinderen te helpen?', dachten zij. We praten over hun beeld van MCK, toen en nu; over de frames waar ze mee te maken krijgen, zoals alle massadonoren kozen hier zelf voor en àl die donorkinderen die op een dag op je stoep staan. We bespreken wat donorkinderen van hun donorvader kunnen verwachten en hoe dat gaat als je met heel veel donorkinderen van dezelfde donor bent. Voel je je dan geen nummer? Daarin staat hoe de economie zich de komende jaren waarschijnlijk zal ontwikkelen. Dat is een mooie aanleiding voor een lang gesprek met de minister van Financiën, Eelco Heinen. Waar ziet hij risico's en waar liggen de kansen? Heinen staat zich erop voor dat hij de hand stevig op de knip houdt. Is hier sprake van een bijna religieus geloof dat minder overheidsuitgaven altijd beter is? Heeft iedereen al door wat we op de NAVO-top beloofd hebben? We gaan enorme bedragen aan defensie uitgeven, dat moet leiden tot lastige keuzes en ingewikkelde politieke discussies. Verzachten we eerste schok in de begroting bijvoorbeeld door de staatsschuld iets op te laten lopen? En hoe zorgen we ervoor dat we in dit land geld blijven verdienen? Deze week verwelkomt de Leaders in Finance Podcast Eelco Heinen. In juli 2024 werd Eelco Heinen benoemd tot minister van Financiën in het kabinet-Schoof namens de VVD.  Eelco begon zijn carrière bij het ministerie van Financiën, waar hij van 2008 tot 2011 werkte. Daarna maakte hij de overstap naar de VVD-Tweede Kamerfractie, waar hij van 2011 tot 2021 als beleidsadviseur Financiën en later als politiek secretaris actief was. In 2021 werd hij lid van de Tweede Kamer, waar hij de rol van woordvoerder Financiën op zich nam.  Wat betreft zijn studieachtergrond: na het afronden van zijn opleiding hogere informatica aan de Hogeschool van Amsterdam, behaalde hij maar liefst twee masterdiploma's, namelijk in de macro-economie en in de internationale betrekkingen, beide aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Naast zijn werk als minister heeft Eelco zich ook ingezet als landelijk campagneleider en was hij lid van diverse VVD-campagneteams en verkiezingsprogrammacommissies. Daarnaast was hij mede-onderhandelaar namens de partij bij de totstandkoming van het huidige kabinet. Extended Look: In this book lunch I will discuss one of the more original and profound works of history to come along in many years: Moved By The Past by Eelco Runia. In this text Runia develops a sophisticated and contrarian theory of History that argues against the prevailing conventions of narrative oriented and deterministic History that are so popular. Instead Runia says that discontinuity is more common than the cause and effect structure of continuity. All too commonly this takes the form of individuals and collective groups of people such as whole nations being willfully destructive, "burning their bridges behind them" and embarking upon the unknown just for the hell of it - without this behavior being either inevitable or necessarily "caused" by preceding history. Runia is a practicing psychologist, an historian and a novelist and accordingly, "Moved By The Past" is a deeply humanistic work. Instead of dry, statistical and mathematical graphs and proofs, he deals with arts and letters: the novels of Sebald and Tolstoy, the poetry of Wordsworth, the writing of Giambattista Vico , the nature of moments and memorialization, as well as psychological theories of selfhood and behavior.
