Is “Systems Thinking is dead” the new “Agile is dead”? In this episode, we do a summary episode on what became a 4 episode series stemming from a disparaging article about systems thinking by Ed Braden. We react to the article, get Ed's response and then - using a little help from Google Ai - offer successful examples of implementing systems in large government projects. You know how agile transformations always promise better collaboration but somehow teams end up chasing tickets like a factory assembly line? Klaus Breyer from Edding has some thoughts on why this keeps happening—and what actually works instead. Klaus's path to leading product and technology at Germany's most famous pen company wasn't exactly traditional. Before Edding, he spent years managing 40-person World of Warcraft raids (yes, really) and running startups. Now he's applying those lessons to build software teams that actually solve problems instead of just completing tasks. The conversation digs into Shape Up methodology, but more importantly, Klaus explains the mindset changes needed to stop treating software development like an assembly line. His team at Edding has built some pretty cool stuff too—like a B2B driver license verification system using invisible conductive ink that smartphones can read. What you'll learn: • Why "give me a ticket" thinking kills collaboration (even in tiny teams) • How 6-week cycles help teams focus on one problem without distractions • The art of separating problems from solutions before jumping into code • Why late-stage compromises usually mean your team isn't really collaborating • When senior teams can ditch tickets entirely and just... work • Klaus's templates for getting everyone aligned on what problems are worth solving

Jim Knowles spoke about his departure from Ohio State and what led up to it during a wide-ranging interview with Heather Dinich of ESPN on Tuesday. What did we make of Knowles' comments? And is there a chance things worked out well in this situation for all parties involved? Ohio State is very happy with the hiring of Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator. Penn State is happy about poaching Knowles from the Buckeyes. And Knowles is happy to be in his home state making north of $3 million per year. Yes, there's a very good chance it worked out well for all sides, but it's still an interesting story. And keep in mind we just heard one side of the story in Dinich's piece. Also on today's show, what might the race for the Big Ten championship look like this year? What about the national title? How are those Heisman odds looking? Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to delve into all of that and more. Ryan Singer is one of the earliest employees and the former Head of Strategy at 37signals (the makers of Basecamp), where he spent nearly two decades refining a product development approach that helped the company build super-successful products with small teams. Based on these lessons, he wrote "Shape Up: Stop Running in Circles and Ship Work that Matters," and Ryan now works with companies of all sizes to them them escape the cycle of endless sprints, missed deadlines, and dragging projects. What you'll learn:1. Why traditional Agile and Scrum methods often lead teams into endless cycles of work without meaningful shipping milestones.2. The “appetite-driven” approach to product development where teams set fixed timeboxes (usually six weeks maximum) and vary the scope instead of expanding timelines.3. The exact process for running effective “shaping” sessions that collaboratively define projects before committing resources.4. Why most teams struggle with too little detail in their planning, not too much.5. Why a 30-to-50-person team size is the critical breaking point when growing startups need to adopt more structured processes.6. Practical techniques for bridging the engineering-design divide by bringing technical and product perspectives together earlier in the process.7. The powerful “breadboarding” and “fat marker sketching” techniques that help teams align on solutions without getting lost in high-fidelity details.8. The clear warning signs that your current development process is failing before it's too late to change course.9. Proven strategies to implement Shape Up methods, whether you're working in a startup or enterprise environment.10. A step-by-step approach to transitioning from Scrum to Shape Up by piloting the methodology with a single team before broader implementation.11. Why the PM role shifts upstream in Shape Up, focusing more on problem definition than project management.12. For over three decades, Bills legend Steve Tasker has been a staple in the Western New York community. A standout on special teams for the Bills during his 12 seasons with the team, Tasker made a name for himself around the league. Not only did his outstanding achievements on the field earn him numerous accolades, his commitment to the region solidified his place in the hearts of Bills fans everywhere. Tasker, who remained close to the game through his broadcast work for CBS, will get back to his roots with Buffalo when he joins the Voice of the Bills John Murphy as co-host of “One Bills Live,” presented by Kaleida Health. Like its predecessor, “The John Murphy Show,” “One Bills Live” will give fans a daily dose of the latest Bills news. The only show live from the home of the Bills – One Bills Drive – fans can follow along with Tasker and Murphy, as well as special guests, as they tackle all the hottest topics happening around the NFL. The show will remain at its current time from noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and will be available on WGR Sports Radio 550, MSG Networks and the MSG Go app.Murphy, who over the years has developed a close relationship with Tasker, believes the Bills icon is the perfect addition to the show. “I've known Steve since he came here in 1986,” said Murphy. “Shortly after that, he started doing television shows. When I was at Channel 7, he hosted “The Steve Tasker Show” and I was the co-host…I've known him for 30-plus years. One of the many good things about Steve doing the show, is he's a broadcaster. He's been at CBS for 21 years at the highest level of football broadcasting.“He comes in with all that experience – all his football experience, playing at a very high level for several years and making Pro Bowls. Adding in his broadcast background, which is pretty impressive, I think it will make him a great addition to the show.” While Tasker's impressive resume undoubtedly gives him a unique perspective to share with viewers, Murphy believes that its Tasker's time spent in Buffalo that makes him truly special and able to connect with his audience.“Steve always impressed me," said Murphy. “Not that players aren't tuned into the reality, but Steve has always been tuned into real life. He knows what it's like not to be in the NFL. He lives his life like a person who is not a former professional athlete in many ways. He's easy to relate to. I think fans already know that. Fans are familiar with him from all the TV work he's done. He brings an everyman aspect to the show and he's committed to this area. I think people tap into that.” For Tasker, this next chapter in his career is one that he's ready to embrace fully. “The Buffalo Bills have been a tremendous part of my life and I am very eager to begin this opportunity,” said Tasker. “This is an exciting time in franchise history and I am thrilled to get involved on a daily basis. I look forward to working with Murph to connect with Bills fans who have been so supportive of me for a long time.” 2024 © 2021 Audacy, Inc.
