As much as every artist would love to focus only on the making, there is an equally important and opposite side of the artist brain that needs to be accessed — the organization side. It takes creativity and organization to successfully run an art business, and my guest today has learned how to embrace both. Not only is Jennifer Printz a practicing artist with an enviable record of exhibitions, but she's also an assistant professor at Florida International University in Miami. She has two full-time jobs. I've watched Jennifer whip her business into shape by getting organized and creating reliable systems. In this episode, I talk with her about how she compartmentalizes her two jobs. We also discuss the planning process she uses, the digital and paper tools she relies on to stay organized, and why writing by hand is critical for her and her students. Highlights Jennifer Printz reflects on the wide variety of her artwork and her work as a professor. (2:02) The importance of modeling art for Jennifer’s students and the lessons they are learning as a result. (5:53) Practical tips for separating your day job from your art business. (8:40) The value of taking time for an artist’s day, connecting with artists virtually, and creating physical space for your creativity. (11:33) Taking your art business beyond the plateau to the next level with coaching and positive feedback. (16:50) Planning out a quarter at a time to free up your mental space for creativity. (22:30) Day-to-day systems that will help you get and stay organized and productive. (27:21) Jennifer’s process around keeping an updated inventory of her pieces. (33:42) Strategic organization of all the moving parts of an exhibition. (38:29) Playing into your personality strengths to maximize your art business systems. (42:35) What is the first step to take when your systems are breaking down? (45:04) A look inside the works that are currently holding Jennifer’s studio attention. In 2004 she was awarded a Puffin Foundation Grant, followed by a Dendo Fellowship in 2016. She has participated in regular residencies in the US, at the Frans Masereel Centre/Flemish Center for the Graphic Arts in Kasterlee, Belgium, St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta, Malta, and La Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, France. Jennifer is also an educator, teaching a wide range of two-dimensional media at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as courses on public art and professional practices. Today’s guest is David Heinemeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails and co founder and CTO at Basecamp. This episode is focused on the release of Rails 6. David talks about the process of getting from Rails 5 to Rails 6 and some of the new features and frameworks in Rails 6. David describes some of the new features as ‘magical, which some people don’t like. He believes that the ‘magical’ element is a good thing because it reduces the learning curve for newcomers, so you can less time studying and more time being productive. This is important because it allows people from other platforms to jump on. Rails 6 will provide users with more frameworks so that they do not have to build all of their own solutions to common problems. David delves into how Ruby goes against the grain by providing tools and how that coincides with their philosophy. He talks about the process for deciding which problems the core team is going to tackle, how they come out of Basecamp, and Basecamp’s methodology in terms of what tools they decide to build. The panel discusses how deviating from the Rails core is almost an antipattern and how having the tools provided for them has improved their experience with Rails.  David talks about some more upcoming frontend products and more on the process of updating Basecamp. He talks about his belief that most companies should not be inspired by how the big tech companies structure their internal teams. The conversation turns to how Shopify and Github are now running Rails 6 and how they have influenced the feature that have been added to Ruby. David believes that it’s important to focus on how to make a framework that solves problems for people but also focuses on real world results and businesses. Ruby wants to continue to “arm the rebels” by enabling small independent software makers to continue to challenge the industry giants. The show finishes with David giving some advice to new Rails programmers.  Panel David Kimura Andrew Mason Nate Hopkins Charles Max Wood Guest David Heinemeier Hansson Sponsors Linode Next Level Mastermind Links Action Text  Action Mailbox Stimulus.js Turbolinks Haml JBuilder Follow David Heinemeier Hansson on Twitter @dhh, dhh.dk and Rework.fm Picks Andrew- How to Say It Andrew- Rework episode Nate- Stimulus Reflex Charles- Atomic Habits Charles- Ed Mylet show Charles- The MFCEO with Andy Frisella David Kimura- Swing set kit David Kimura- Rails 6 David Kimura- His daughter Ruby David Heinemeier Hansson- To Have or To Be David Heinemeier Hansson- Shape Up book David Heinemeier Hansson- Rails 6

We’re revisiting Shape Up and product development thoughts with Ryan Singer, Head of Product Strategy at Basecamp. Last August we talked with Ryan when he first launched his book Shape Up and now we’re back to see how Shape Up is shaping up — “How are teams using the wisdom in this book to actually ship work that matters? How does Shape Up work in new versus existing products?” We also talk about the concept of longitudinal thinking and the way it’s impacting Ryan’s designs, plus a grab bag of topics in the last segment.
