Tracey has Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Business Administration degree from Montclair State University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Fairleigh-Dickinson University.  She is a former Assistant Professor of English and Black Studies at the Community College of Philadelphia. As a writer, Tracey has published eighteen books including several collaborations with numerous high-profile authors. In 2021, Tracey became one of 20 writers who contributed to the groundbreaking book, You are Your Best Thing: Vulnerability, Shame Resilience, and the Black Experience edited by acclaimed researcher, Brene Brown, and founder of the MeToo Movement, Tarana Burke.  Her most recent publication is the critically-acclaimed book, Black Joy: Stories of Resistance, Resilience, and Restoration (Gallery/Simon and Schuster) which has received rave reviews from celebrities like Kerry Washington, literary writers like Kiese Laymon and Deesha Philyaw, and media outlets like Good Morning America, Essence Magazine, and USA Today. Her forthcoming book, Then They Came for Mine: Healing from the Trauma of Racial Violence, examines the source and impact of racial violence against Black people in all its forms and offers a blueprint for the way the Christian Church can help facilitate healing.  Tracey has spoken on a number of platforms around the country on topics related to race/social justice, education, faith/spirituality, and wellness. This week we get up close and personal on a hard topic, vulnerability. Fortunately, we have Brene Brown's book Daring Greatly to help guide us as we navigate through. If you haven't read Daring Greatly, this barely scratches the surfaces and primes the pump, so if this episode connects with you, you'll definitely want to add it to your reading list. If you have read it, this is a great opportunity to revisit the myths around vulnerability and to take a moment to reflect on how you are applying this to your life, and how you might look at things with new lenses and examples. We primarily focus on the vulnerability myths that Brene talks about in her book. Some are bound to feel familiar. Perhaps the myth you can go it alone? Or vulnerability is a weakness? We'll even talk about some boundaries that go with vulnerability and figuring out who you can trust. I even trust you with some pretty stark examples of vulnerable points in my life. I'm sure it will bring to mind vulnerable points in yours and reinforce the relationships that were of value. She helps women break free from the barriers of shame, become empowered to advocate and gain self-confidence, create resiliency, establish self-care rituals, implement healthy boundaries, and become a leader in their universe. Noor also works with Muslim men. Noor has done international mental health work, specifically helping Afghan women. In 2019 Noor delivered her first TEDx Talk on Shame Resilience. This week's episode is the edited webinar "It's Complicated" where I talk about some strategies for dealing with complications. I have created a full 3 month program focusing on this (registration now closed), because so much is involved in our reaction to complications. This episode focuses on the most important aspect of complications: shame resilience. If you can keep yourself from feeling shame, then you are more likely to recover from a complication. You will be available to receive help from others. Speaking of help from others, Dr. Laura Brown offered a tip that can help deal with the trauma of complications. After you have a complication, go to the store and buy the tallest candle. Light it every night to honor the patient you lost. When the candle is out, make that be the end of your second guessing yourself and your care. This is a way to honor the patient and yourself. She stated, "I find it focused my ‘tape' in my head and limited it to candle time. During one bad week of residency, I had a record of seven candles. It's never been that bad since. It kept me from burning out."
