It's been too long since we've offended the public at large. In an effort to remind you all of the profundity and brilliance of our beer knowledge we have decided to discuss one hop across three styles. Make sure to take detailed notes as this episode will surely help you pass your Cicerone Certification Program. The offerings in this episode all contain mosaic hops. We start with Small and Soft from Bare Hands Brewery. This New England Style Pale Ale offers great utility and artwork that left Adam nearly speechless. Next up was was an American IPA; Pompeii from Toppling Goliath Brewing Company. Clocking in at 6.3% ABV it's not even close to one of their strongest offerings, but this one stood out with strong pineapple flavors. To finish out the episode we sampled one of Destihl Brewery's Deadhead IPA Series, Touch of Haze. Juicier than the Pompeii it hid the 7.3% ABV quite well.Let us know what you think about mosaic hops and let us know what other hops you think we should explore! Cheers!
In this week's episode, the boys are back to just the two of them. Iowa craft beer is back in the glass from the amazing Toppling Goliath Brewing Company out of Decorah, IA. We also have a very special two-can, two-brewery collaboration beer. These "mixable" cans come from 903 Brewers out of Sherman, TX and Wiley Roots Brewing out of Greeley, CO. Other than some usual beer talk and tangents, we talk about can art, Dallas' upcoming trip to the Midwest, and a few other side chats. Reinhard Heydrich is widely recognized as one of the great iconic villains of the twentieth century, an appalling figure even within the context of the Nazi leadership. Chief of the Nazi Criminal Police, the SS Security Service, and the Gestapo, ruthless overlord of Nazi-occupied Bohemia and Moravia, and leading planner of the "Final Solution," Heydrich played a central role in Hitler's Germany. He shouldered a major share of responsibility for some of the worst Nazi atrocities, and up to his assassination in Prague in 1942, he was widely seen as one of the most dangerous men in Nazi Germany. Yet Heydrich has received remarkably modest attention in the extensive literature of the Third Reich.Robert Gerwarth weaves together little-known stories of Heydrich's private life with his deeds as head of the Nazi Reich Security Main Office. Fully exploring Heydrich's progression from a privileged middle-class youth to a rapacious mass murderer, Gerwarth sheds new light on the complexity of Heydrich's adult character, his motivations, the incremental steps that led to unimaginable atrocities, and the consequences of his murderous efforts toward re-creating the entire ethnic makeup of Europe.HOST: Rob MellonFEATURED BREW: Naughty Temple Ale Aged in Whiskey Barrels, Toppling Goliath Brewing Company, Decorah, IowaBOOK: Hitler's Hangman: The Life of Heydrichhttps://www.amazon.com/Hitlers-Hangman-Heydrich-Robert-Gerwarth/dp/0300187726/ref=sr_1_1?crid=Y38Z536MKWKZ&keywords=hitlers+hangman&qid=1617420204&s=books&sprefix=hitlers+hangman%2Cstripbooks%2C411&sr=1-1MUSIC: Bones Forkhttps://bonesfork.com/CLIPS: Hangmen Also Die! In episode 211, "Ma Rainey, Ma Rainey Let Levee Complainey", Tony & Eddie discuss the Netflix breakout adaptation of, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020). This powerhouse cast features the late great Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis positively running a clinic on perfection. The entire film takes place in two rooms and is very much stage adaptation in how claustrophobic it feels - but these actors surely don't seem boxed in. The boys also tried new beer from Cinderlands Beer Company and Toppling Goliath Brewing Company.
In this episode Randy and Kyle discuss disagreement, a current topic if there ever was one. Kyle did his PhD dissertation on the epistemology of disagreement, and this conversation explores what it is, some common pitfalls, how to do it better, and what it looks like for Christians in particular. For more of Kyle's thoughts on this, see here. The beer featured in this episode is King Sue by Toppling Goliath Brewing Company.Support the show
In this episode, we'll talk with Owner Clark Lewey and Executive Brewmaster Mike Saboe of Toppling Goliath Brewing Company in Decorah. We'll talk about the lab's role in making great beer. We'll talk about maintaining small batch magic despite strong growth. And we'll talk about much, much more. This episode of The Sight Glass is brought to you by Visit Decorah.
Toppling Goliath Brewing https://www.tgbrews.com Pseudo Sue by Topping Goliath is one of their "flagship" beers, but did you know they are brewed in two different locations? You'd have no idea unless you looked closely at the can, but does it even matter? You can watch this review on YouTube: https://youtu.be/fRgvtF57wk8 www.beerdedhops.com/findus
Do you have a strong, unshakable sense of adventure? Do you long to visit faraway, uninhabited places, like another planet? Do you have friends that are total dicks who are hellbent on seeing you cry as they destroy everything you try to contribute to this new venture? Well, Nelson has friends like that, and they shine on like the assholes they are in this week’s episode of Beer’d Gamers, Terraforming Mars. Terraforming Mars is both a cooperative and competitive game, where players work together to make Mars habitable, while still trying to achieve their own objectives and increase their own victory points. Players work together to raise the temperature of the planet, to increase its oxygen level, and to create ocean and forest areas. Cities are created, pets are bred, and many other things occur as players race to accrue VP. Terraforming Mars retails for about $50 or so, depending on the seller. We really enjoyed this game; we recommend it to people who love resource collecting/exploiting games, as well as fans of cooperative and competitive games. Hopefully your friends aren’t as terrible as Nelson’s, though. This week in beer selections we’ve got Nelson drinking Beyond the Pale IPA from Point Brewery, Teej enjoys Polish Moon from a Beer’d Gamers favorite brewery, Milwaukee (MKE) Brewing Company, Schnell blasts off into space with Light Speed Pale Ale from Toppling Goliath Brewing Company, and Junior, who still has the healthiest liver of all of us, decides to put his liver to the test and is double fisting Schell’s Snowstorm Rye Ale and Rock Hard Red from Gray Brewing Company. Think of that last one what you will. We totally did. There’s a dog on the label for God’s sake.
We try to laugh through the pain of watching the last two USMNT World Cup Qualifier matches. A great beer from Toppling Goliath Brewing Company in partnership with The Field Museum in Chicago helps us along with that. Ron shares some news from the craft beer world, and Ferris gets feisty discussing Orlando City SC's recent 0-4 drubbing the faced at the hand of New England. Blake is just happy we aren't talking about Arsenal.
Today's style is the much sought after Double IPA, from Daredevil Brewing we feature their Ripcord Double IPA, dropping in at a hefty 9%. Toppling Goliath Brewing Company, King Sue Double IPA. Thanks to listener, Jon-Michael for the sweet beer.Adam also offends every Star Wars fan ever, and officially should have his fandom revoked. Rob and Pete were disgusted, and there was much conversation regarding whether or not to post his shenanigans, but that's the only way he'll learn. Make sure you voice your displeasure in the comments. We'd like to say things improve from there, but we all know that'd be a lie. We invite you to sit back, relax, and nurse that St. Patrick's Day hangover and while enjoying our latest episode.
