Inside the Nazis' Supernatural Obsession | A Conversation with Historian Eric Kurlander

June 4, 1941. Reinhard Heydrich transmits a message to all regional governors in the Third Reich: prepare for “action against occult teachings.” Heydrich is carrying out the orders of Adolf Hitler, who is furious at his Deputy Führer, Rudolf Hess. Inspired by a horoscope reading, Hess decided to fly a secret mission to Great Britain and sue for peace. But Hess crash-lands in Scotland—the plan doesn't pan out—and his failure becomes an international embarrassment. So in retaliation, Hitler cracks down on mysticism throughout Germany. Magicians, spiritualists, and faith healers are arrested, their homes get searched, and their books are confiscated.  And yet, the “Hess Action” only lasts a few weeks. Because Hitler and many of the top Nazi leaders are also obsessed with the occult, the supernatural, and the fringes of science. How does Nazi Germany embrace the metaphyiscal, mysticism, and mythology? And how do they use these ideas to strengthen their fascist regime? This episode features a conversation with Eric Kurlander, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of History at Stetson University and author of Hitler's Monsters: A Supernatural History of the Third Reich.

Heydrich toho využil k vyhlášení „velkorysého daru“ a třem tisícům dělníků a dělnic ze zbrojních podniků poskytl v zotavovnách Čech a Moravy zdarma dovolenou. Zvláště proslulé byly lázně Luhačovice, kde byly i dispozici zdarma biografy či sportovní utkání. I silné odbory plynule přešly do nových časů.

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on a plot-point only revealed in the last third of the book, but which has been set up as Tagomi organizes a meeting between the Swedish Baynes (actually the Abwehr agent Wegner) and retired Japanese general Tedeki). Baynes/Wegner reveals the existence and readiness of a Nazi plot for attaining world domination, Operation Dandelion, which involves a massive nuclear attack on Japan. This poses a dilemma, since Goebels, who is in process of consolidating his power, is in favor of Operation Dandelion, but Heydrich and the SD/SS are against the operation. Wegner suggests that the Japanese government should support the "most malignant part of German society", Heydrich and the police. This means collaborating with evil in order to prevent evil of a different sort and on a greater scale. 27 maja 1942 roku dwaj wyszkoleni w Wielkiej Brytanii komandosi, Czech Jan Kubiš i Słowak Jozef Gabčík dokonali w Pradze udanego zamachu na protektora Czech i Moraw, obergruppenführera Reinharda Heydricha. Prit Buttar's book Centuries Will Not Suffice: A History of the Lithuanian Holocaust (Amberley, 2023) explores how different people responded to the Lithuanian Holocaust and the roles that they played. It considers the past history of the perpetrators and those who took great risks to save Jews, as well as describing the experiences of many who were caught up in the maelstrom. Unlike the figures at the top of the Nazi hierarchy, the men who were responsible for these killings have been largely forgotten. Karl Jäger was a senior SS figure who was in charge of the units that carried out most of them. He complained that his experiences caused him to suffer nightmares but continued to order his units to carry on and refused offers of sick leave on the grounds that he regarded it as his duty to remain in his post. He took refuge in compiling painstakingly detailed reports of the killings, listing the numbers executed at every location and breaking them down into men, women and children. T he roles played by other figures, from Himmler and Heydrich at the summit, through the ranks of men down to Martin Weiss and Bruno Kittel who were personally responsible for carrying out Nazi policies, are all described. Before the German invasion of Lithuania, two diplomats - Chiune Sugihara from Japan and Jan Zwartendijk from the Netherlands - recognised the great danger that lay ahead for the Jews of the Baltic region and did what they could to help them escape. Karl Plagge, a major in the army, did all he could to save Jews. What perhaps make the terrible story of the Baltic genocide unique is that the Nazi regime was able to rely upon collaboration by convincing the populace that the Soviet invasion of the area was the responsibility of the Jews. Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

I was watching some Television over the weekend when I came to a realization that for some reason, had never completely struck me before. As you know, I love me some history, and the program I was watching dealt with one of the most evil figures in history, involved in one of the darkest moments in history. But what struck me wasn't how terribly monstrous this fellow had been (he's dead now). It wasn't his hatred or his senseless belief in a twisted and delusional ideology. The truth that I finally realized was simply this: as bad as this leader had been, it was impossible for him to even try to accomplish his goals without people – lost to history – who were willing to carry out his directives. But those orders don't happen unless there were thousands upon thousands who both agreed with him and who were willing to actually carry out the actions that had been directed. I was… well… confused over the weekend by the actions of President Trump and his dinner companions. I get it, I am a free speech radical. For whatever it's worth, I personally believe that Kanye West is a performer and a brand. There is very little substance there and his words are generally designed to attract attention. You know what I say… attention whores gonna attention whore. It's what they do. But the other fellow at the dinner strikes me as one of those thousands upon thousands of people who would have read the memo's put out by Heydrich and taken them to heart. Does he have a right to spew his anti-Jewish hatred? Yes. Do I have the right to call him a foul Nazi worshipping myrmidon who would have willingly followed Hitler to the death (and may yet)? You bet'cha… But name calling isn't going to accomplish anything, is it? Neither will 140 character Tweets or soon-to-be-banned Facebook posts. Nor does it mean that the former President should be above critique for the having the meeting in the first place. It's not like he didn't KNOW who these folks are. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/plausibly-live/message

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to episode 37! In this one, Laurel talks about The Third Wave Social Experiment that was conducted at a Palo Alto, California high school in a 1967 contemporary world history class. Within a very short span of time, the experiment gets out of control--both for the students and the teacher conducting it and it leaves everyone with a bone-chilling outcome... Next, KT tells the story of Operation: Anthropoid which was the only successful assassination of a high-ranking officer of Nazi High Command: Reinhard Heydrich (and good riddance if we can say so!) Due to the nature of KT's story, we have included a content warning at the top of the show. There are mentions of suicide, mass murder and the general atrocities that were committed by Heydrich and the rest of the Nazi regime. Listener discretion is advised. *~*~*~*~*~*~ The Socials! Mělo to obrovský smysl,“ uvádí v Pro a proti ředitel památníku Lidice a historik Eduard Stehlík.
