Adapted from August Wilson's play, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom tells the story of blues singer Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and her band trying to record some of her most famous songs. Her trumpet player, Levee, has plans to take her spotlight as he tries to write his own songs and form his own band. What results is a single day filled with personal conflicts, racial tension, and philosophical quarrels. There's plenty of material here from which Don and Chuck can draw lessons, such as the commodification of black talent, not taking power you haven't earned, and the building pressure of being polite to your enemies. Topics include The Elephant Man, Star Wars as failed Dungeons and Dragons characters, what serves as the best introduction to David Lynch movies (hint here), what Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and One Night in Miami do similarly and differently, Matt's odd fascination with Hitchcock movie adaptations of stage plays like "Dial M for Murder", Denzel Washington's desire to make the August Wilson Cinematic Universe, actors as filmmakers, including Mel Gibson, the strange accusations of the film world of culturally appropriating Theater, and H Bomberguy's Youtube Channel.

In this episode, we discuss the Oscar nominated performances Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis gave in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

Oh hello! And welcome dear listen to another episode of Stream Theory! For this week's examination we're diving headfirst into the Netflix Original adaptation of the legendary August Wilson play, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020). Directed by George C. Wolfe and starring Viola Davis and the late great Chadwick Boseman, just to name a few, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom tells the story of one fateful recording session with the mother of blues, Ma Rainey herself. As tensions rise between her band members, the white record execs, and the star herself, this film, in its sleek 1 hour and 34 minute run time, dares to tackle spirituality, racist power structures, and the autonomy of the artist and their art. OnWriting presents three live-taped episodes of OnWriting celebrating Black History Month, presented by the WGAE Black Writers Salon. In each installment, two co-chairs of the WGAE Black Writers Salon—OnWriting’s own Geri Cole and Rashidi Hendrix—speak with Black screenwriters who have each written amazing films about Black icons in history. To kick things off, we’re joined by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and the screenwriter of MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM, which is currently available to stream on Netflix. Ruben Santiago-Hudson is a versatile talent who — in addition to his many acting credits in projects like BILLIONS and THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS — wrote the award-winning stage play for LACKAWANNA BLUES as well as its Emmy and Writers Guild Award-nominated TV film adaptation. MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM is an adaptation of the August Wilson play of the same name. The film, set in 1920s Chicago, follows a recording session where tensions rise between mother of blues Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), and her ambitious horn player named Levee (Chadwick Boseman). -- Read shownotes, transcripts, and other member interviews: www.onwriting.org/ -- Follow the Guild on social media: Twitter: @OnWritingWGAE | @WGAEast Facebook: /WGAEast Instagram: @WGAEast

In episode 211, "Ma Rainey, Ma Rainey Let Levee Complainey", Tony & Eddie discuss the Netflix breakout adaptation of, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020). This powerhouse cast features the late great Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis positively running a clinic on perfection. The entire film takes place in two rooms and is very much stage adaptation in how claustrophobic it feels - but these actors surely don't seem boxed in. The boys also tried new beer from Cinderlands Beer Company and Toppling Goliath Brewing Company.
