After a long hiatus, the lads are back! And they are bringing the much-delayed 2022 WGOH?!? Best Tournament in which they countdown the best Nicolas Cage movies, seeded by their Rotten Tomatoes percentage and money made. We picked 4 movies from each decade of Nic Cage's illustrious career, and broke it down. Also, we had a plethora of adult beverages. the variety was as eclectic as Nic Cage movies, and this is what the lads had: Sean had Space Komet Citra (a 7%ABV IPA by Karmic Daaru Company out of Branford, CT), and Leave The Gun, Take The Cannoli (a 7.4% ABV stout by 902 Brewing out of Jersey City, NJ). Andrew had Big Wave (a 4.4% ABV golden ale by the Kona Brewing Company out of Kailua Kona, HI) and a cocktail called the Bitter End (a variation on the whiskey sour using Wild Turkey 101, Campari, and bitters). Tomo had the Solstice Lager (a 4.5% ABV lager by Stella Artois out of Leuven, Belgium) and Ahooga (a 7.8% ABV imperial pilsner by Hackesack Brewing out of Hackensack, NJ). So get yourself one (or all) of these drinks, download the episode, and let us know if you agree with our picks or not. Cheers!!!

Cameron Healy is the Founder of The Healy Foundation, an organization that awards grants and scholarships to support the community, environment, and youth in Oregon and Hawaii. He is also the Co-founder of Kona Brewing Company and the original visionary behind the KETTLE® Chips empire.  Cameron launched his first business when he was only 21 years old with a company rooted in the natural food movement. Since then, Cameron has built and scaled many successful businesses. He attributes much of his entrepreneurial success to the lessons he learned from his father and the strong communities around him. In this episode… Running a successful business takes hard work, a strong spirit, and the courage to take risks. However, you can’t do it all on your own. Being surrounded by a supportive community can make a huge difference in your business’ success and longevity. So, how can you give back to the community that has made this success possible?  For Cameron Healy, community has always been an essential part of his personal and professional life. Without strong support and close relationships, he wouldn’t have been able to get his first business off the ground or expand his KETTLE® Chips empire to an international market. Because of this, Cameron created The Healy Foundation: an organization that gives back to the community, environment, and youth throughout Oregon and Hawaii.  On this episode of the Inspired Insider Podcast, Dr. Jeremy Weisz sits down with Cameron Healy, Founder of The Healy Foundation, to talk about chips, beer, business, and giving back to the community. Cameron describes how the natural food movement inspired him to start KETTLE® Chips, why he created his community-centric foundation, and his experience growing a small brewpub into a multimillion-dollar company. Dave and Andy are stuck deliberating a decision of life and death. Face destruction or a path through the underworld. But wait! Incredible stories illuminate the way! Midnight rides, amazing video game Easter eggs, and bourbon-fueled spit takes. Will there be the sound of bagpipes? You’ll need to listen and find out.   Wait a second, this isn’t a horror film… it’s a buddy comedy! Like Shaun of the Dead! Starring your two favorite buddies, Dave and Andy!   Dude, did you hear?   Andy is drinking a Longboard Lager from Kona Brewing Company and Dave   Quickdraws include an update to the story we covered in our treasure hunting episode, the midnight ride of ______ ______ that secured America’s independence, the original plot of Anchorman, and the scandalous name of erasers in England.   Andy shares some surprising effects that music can have on some very random objects. Grab some wine, put away that bug spray and turn up the tunes! (That sentence will make sense once you listen to the segment)   Dave shares a story that feels eerily familiar. They always say that history is doomed to repeat itself. Will he come out as the king of the world or will he identify as part of women and children first? It’s 2020 so who cares anymore.   BONUS HACK: Dave reveals an unbelievable Easter egg in Area 51. This is probably the most important part of the episode.   Andy recommends "The King" on Netflix. If you enjoy "Braveheart" and Shakespeare, stream it now!   Dave recommends vinyl. You don’t need to grow a beard, wear dark rimmed glasses, do anything ironically, drink craft beer, be authentic, recommend NPR podcasts, wear flannel, roll up your dark blue jeans, wear work boots and do no actual work, or drink pour over coffee to enjoy it! You just need to love high fidelity music captured in a way your ears can appreciate. And being awesome.   Andy doesn’t recommend this crazy way of getting out of a life prison sentence. You won’t believe what this one guy tried! (Yep, you just got click-baited. We’re master click-baiters.)   Dave doesn’t recommend going out in public with the COVID-19 novel coronavirus. Before your trigger warnings go off, you won’t believe the plot twist this one takes.

In this long awaited episode we recap the Revel Kulia Marathon on the Big Island of Hawaii, the final race in my quest to run a marathon in every state. This happened to be my fastest marathon to date with a finish of 3:19:55 (20 minutes under my Boston Qualifying time)! Plus in this episode you will also hear practical tips on how you can run a PR (personal record) this year. Revel Kulia Marathon Race Recap The 2nd annual Revel Kulia Marathon was held on January 18, 2020 at Waikoloa, Hawaii.Pre Race: The race sent out frequent updates and information. The expo was located on the Hilton Waikoloa Village property on Friday from 11am-7pm and was easy to navigate and mostly well organized. There was a moment of panic when the volunteer couldn’t find my race bib. But upon closer inspection it was located and I was number 1234. They also put your name on the bib and offered athlete tracking. Along with the short sleeve tech shirt they gave out an insulated beer/wine tumbler and some misc products in the swag bag. They had a couple of props set up for taking pictures. We met up with Natalie (my MetPro Coach), Tamana and her friend Suma from Cleveland, along with Wayne and Sherrie from Alberta.Race Morning: The race bused participants from the Hilton Waikoloa Resort and the Queen’s Marketplace to the start times. The marathon buses left between 4-5am since it was nearly an hour drive to the start and the half marathon buses left between 4:30-5:30 since it was about 30 minutes to the start. The marathon start area was set up off to the side of the road and consisted of a couple tables of water and sports drink, a bank of port-a-pots, music and speaker system, some site lights, the gear check truck, and the starting line set up a ways up the road. The wind made it feel rather chilly although the temps were around mid-50’s. Fortunately the race gave out gloves and heat sheet blankets and that helped a lot. I had a throw away jacket as well. We stood around talking, using the bathrooms, listened to the announcements, and then around 6:15am they directed us to walk up the road to get behind the start line. There was the usual nervous chatter and people shuffling around to try and stay warm. At 6:30am they did a countdown and then we were off running downhill.Course: The marathon course started near the Kilohana Girl Scout Camp on the western slopes of Mauna Kea at around 5,400 feet of elevation. I immediately noticed the huge amount of elevation loss. Right off the starting line the course went downhill and that combined with the dark made me a bit nervous that I would end up falling. The first 7 miles continued at a -7% grade and loses 2,591 feet of elevation which is 48% of the total elevation loss for the whole course. It made running this section extremely challenging because you want to relax into the downhill but not let yourself get out of control. You also don’t want to do a lot of braking which is hard on the body and slows you down. My mantra for the downhills was “flow” sort of like the relentless flow of lava. I tried to relax and keep the effort comfortable hard while enjoying the beautiful mountainous scenery around me. My pace for the first 6.55 miles was 6:46 for a time of 44:22. By the time we got to mile 8 my legs were already feeling the toll of all that steep downhill but I tried to keep my mind positive and just run one mile at a time. The marathon described miles 8-13 as “slow down and hang on.” At mile 11 and 12 the course really flattened out and then there are a few hills for a net elevation gain. It was a challenge to keep pushing at a decent pace and not get discouraged on the hills. Although I was really starting to feel warm by the halfway point I was still holding a pace of 7:23 for a half time of 1:36:45. It really felt like the first half of the race went by quickly. Near mile 13 we made another turn and from miles 14-20 the course lost another 1,600 feet of elevation which is a -4.5% grade. Compared to the first section this amount of downhill felt much more manageable. By mile 16 I was feeling very hot as the sun was shining in a cloudless sky and we were running toward the ocean. It started to feel like the aid stations were too far apart as I was very thirsty by the time I arrived at one. I was very thankful that I decided to go with the more minimal clothing option. There’s nothing like a little suffering to make you feel thankful for the little things- like the occasional breeze that I could feel. For the final 10k the course has around a -2.4% grade and there were a couple small hills. I also started passing a few half marathoners and saw Ed, a listener from Honolulu, out on the course. I really had to work hard at staying positive and focused during the final 10k because I was just so hot. I kept thinking, “I’m running my 50th state marathon, how amazing is that!” but part of me just wanted to be done. I noticed that I wasn’t even sweating that much which is unusual for me and I started dumping water on myself at each aid station. At mile 25 we turned onto Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway. This last mile plus was on exposed blacktop surrounded by lava fields and felt flat, exposed, and HOT. Plus there was a lot of traffic whizzing by. I was trying to keep up a strong effort during the final two miles but being so hot I was somewhat worried. A couple of times I thought, “I hope I don’t pass out . . . I’ve never passed out during a marathon before, that would be awful to come all the way to Hawaii and not finish the race.” When I got to the last mile I realized that I needed to run a sub-8:00 mile to finish sub-3:20 so I decided to do a final push. During the last section we turned back into the Hilton Waikoloa property to finish at the Queen’s Marketplace area. When I saw the 26 mile marker I felt a lot of relief and pushed across the finish line to finish strong. When I looked at the finish clock it said 3:19:59 and I felt so happy to meet my goal of running sub-3:20.Finish Line/Finisher’s Stats: I learned that my official time was 3:19:55 for an average pace of 7:37 per mile which was a 9:23 PR for me. The Revel race also prints off this awesome finisher’s card which lists your time and stats and I learned that I finished as the 4th place female (out of 121), 19th overall (out of 253), and 1st in my AG (out of 17- although the first 3 ladies were also 40+). This was also a Boston Qualifying time of over 20 minutes. They gave out very nice medals along with a fresh lei to all the race finishers. They also had cold water and cold wet towels which felt amazing. I had a chocolate milk but didn’t even get over to see what other food was offered because I met a listener Sherry at the finish line and talked to her for a bit as she waited for her husband Wayne to finish. Then I saw Trevor, Natalie, and Tamanna and went over to celebrate with them. With Tamana and Natalie (my MetPro coach) The total number of Half Marathoners was 332. The male winner was Samuel Fradette with a time of 1:17:58 and the female winner was Krysten Smith with a time of 1:23:40. The total number of marathoners was 225. The male winner was Paul Terranova with a time of 2:49:10 and the female winner was Kamie Miller with a time of 3:08:37. I got my checked bag and changed into my recovery sandals and then we walked to the car to get back to the hotel. By that point I was feeling very happy and relieved to have run strong. My legs were also feeling rather jelly-like, especially in my quads. That started several days of hobbling around walking like a drunken toddler (as Rachel who did the marathon so aptly put it). This was the most sore that I’ve been post-marathon for a long time. By day 4 I was feeling like I normally do the day after a marathon and able to go down stairs and sit down without much discomfort.MTA Meet Up: Later in the afternoon we had the MTA meet up at the Kona Brewing Company and had a great turnout of listeners. Julia Person is the Corporate Sustainability Manager with Craft Brew Alliance, headquartered in Portland, Oregon and a leader in brewing, branding and bringing to market world class American craft beers such as from Widmer Brothers Brewing and Kona Brewing Co. Julia Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Craft Brew Alliance's recent sustainability report and incorporating SASB framework into their reporting process CBA's work to understand GHG emissions in product packaging Sustainable design of the new Kona Brewing Company brewery Managing sustainability messaging throughout multiple different brands Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Julia's Final Five Question Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? What I learned early on in my career, which is more relevant today even than ever, is that sustainability is a business necessity for all different types of businesses. It's just the state of the world right now. So, if you really understand the business case of sustainability and how it really can work hand in hand with business to making you more competitive, more profitable, and it's not an extra cost to the business, then I think that really would help someone out in their career to affect change and really align with those business needs. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I think we're seeing that the technology is really out there. It's really caught up with what we want to do. So, it's a matter of really scaling that up and making it happen. I mentioned our water recovery and it's incredible to me that we're able to make our own clean water as a business that's cleaner than water we're being delivered. It's actually clean enough for us to make beer out of. I don't think we're there yet as a society, but I think we will be one day soon and I'm excited to see that. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. It's about the dust bowl so it's looking back, but that was one of the biggest human caused environmental disasters of recent times. So, I feel like we have a lot to learn from those historical events when we're facing current challenges. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? In our industry, we have the trade group called the Brewers Association and they have some incredible tools around sustainability. They have manuals around water and energy. A really valuable tool is they're benchmarking efforts where they're collecting data from breweries across the country of all different sizes around our energy and water use and CO2. It's valuable to be able to benchmark and see what's best in class and where's the gap. I really find that one of the most valuable tools out there. Where can people go to learn more about you and the workup CBA? The best place to go is craftbrew.com. You can click over to our About section to find our new sustainability report. It's interactive as well. So, as you're reading through that, you can click on links and find videos that pop up and so forth. So, hopefully some of you folks can check that out. Craft Brew News - 5/3/2019Craft Brew Alliance Agrees to Settle Kona Labeling DisputeCraft Brew Alliance (CBA) has agreed to settle a years-long class action lawsuit over alleged “false and deceptive advertising” of its Kona Brewing beer brand. In an SEC filing, the publicly traded Portland, Oregon-based craft beer company – today said it expects to incur costs of about $4.7 million to settle the dispute, which surfaced in early 2017.That amount is inclusive of all legal and administrative fees but does not represent the total amount CBA will pay to the class, according to Marcus Reed, the company’s general counsel.According to Reed, the nationwide settlement will be open to consumers who purchased Kona-branded beer products dating as far back as 2013.The original complaint alleged that CBA, “intentionally misleads consumers into believing that Kona Brewing Company beer is a local beer made in Hawaii.”Although CBA maintains a production facility in Hawaii and produces thousands of barrels on the island, it produces a majority of the Kona beer sold in the continental U.S. at facilities in Portland, Oregon, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and at an Anheuser-Busch brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado.Speaking to Brewbound, Reed said the company agreed to a settlement after two years of litigation because it was becoming a “distraction” to the company’s day-to-day business.“It got to the point where it was time to reach a settlement,” he said.Canada’s Moosehead Breweries Enters Cannabis Sector in JV with SproutlyCanada’s oldest and largest independent brewery is getting into the cannabis business.Moosehead Breweries Limited and Sproutly Canada, which aims to become the leading supplier of water-soluble cannabis solutions, yesterday announced their intent to form an exclusive joint venture that will develop, produce and market cannabis-infused beverages. In the release, Moosehead CEO Andrew Oland said Sproutly’s proprietary “Infuz2O” process for delivering cannabis effects within five minutes drove the brewery’s interest in entering the cannabis market.Recreational use of cannabis was legalized in Canada last October, however, the sale of edibles and infused beverages are not currently permitted. Legalization of those products is expected to occur on October 17.Moosehead joins a growing list of beer manufacturers that have already invested in the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with other Canadian cannabis companies. Hamilton, Ontario-based Collective Arts Brewing has also established a sister company called Collective Project Limited to develop and sell cannabis-infused beverages.Cannabis is not federally legal in the U.S., however 10 states — Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Washington, D.C. — have established laws permitting the sale and use of recreational cannabis within their borders. Several other states are currently working to decriminalize and legalize cannabis.Meeting of the Malts: Pennsylvania Craft Beer Production Tops in the NationFor the third consecutive year, Pennsylvania produced more craft beer than any other state in the nation, Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson shared during the Brewers of Pennsylvania’s annual Meeting of the Malts gathering in Hershey, Pennsylvania. (Check out Craft Beer Storm – Episode # 41 with Bart Watson!)In 2018, Pennsylvania’s 354 craft breweries combined to produce more than 3.7 million barrels of beer. And, according to Watson, the state ranked second in the number of brewery openings, trailing just California. Most of that growth, Watson said, is coming from the small breweries that sell directly to consumers.Direct-to-consumer sales at Pennsylvania breweries increased by 15,000 barrels last year, Watson said. He added that Pennsylvania brewers have room to grow as national taproom sales accounted for about 12.5 percent of beer sales.Looking at the national landscape, Watson said he believes there will be 10,000 breweries in operation in the U.S. within the next two years. In 2018, a record number 7,346 breweries operated for all or part of the year.As more breweries have opened, the median size of all beer companies has shrunk to 400 barrels, Watson said. He added that half of the breweries in the country produce 400 barrels or fewer. However, Watson said craft brewers have the opportunity to buck those trends and grow over the next decade as millennials “age into beer, rather than aging out of beer like previous generations.”Veteran New Belgium Communications Director to Depart on May 10Longtime New Belgium Brewing spokesman Bryan Simpson will depart the company on May 10, Brewbound has learned. (Founder is Kim Jordan)“It’s been an absolute honor to represent this brewery and everyone’s collective love and talent,” he said via a statement.Leah Pilcer-Pitman, who most recently served as New Belgium’s director of retail development and strategy, will supplant Simpson as director of communications.Simpson, who spent 21-years with the country’s fourth largest craft beer company, said he will launch his own boutique digital media agency this summer.“I’ll be moving on to pursue my long-deferred dream of creative film and media production, and I will always be a passionate and vocal fan of New Belgium Brewing and the entire craft brewing industry,” he said via the statement.Speaking to Brewbound, Simpson said his yet-to-be-named agency would focus on “content generation” and the creation of “digital and web assets.”Simpson, one of New Belgium’s longest-tenured employees, joined the company in July 1997. At the time, New Belgium produced about 80,000 barrels of beer, its offerings were distributed in just five Western states, and the entire craft brewing industry comprised fewer than 1,100 breweries that collectively produced 5 million barrels.Today, more than 7,300 breweries make nearly 26 million barrels of craft beer, according to industry trade group the Brewers Association. For its part, New Belgium, now the fourth-largest U.S. craft brewery according to industry trade group the Brewers Association, produced 846,000 barrels of beer in 2018, down from 955,000 barrels in 2017. The company distributes to 50 states.“I was literally hired on the bottling line, and then I worked in the tasting room for one-to-two years, but at that time everyone was doing a bit of everything,” he said.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. OK, so maybe none of us are Dwayne Johnson.  Maybe we’ve never been WWE Champ, or even the People’s Champ, for that matter.  Maybe we’ve never saved America from rampaging giant animals.  But you know what?  None of us has that shitty brahma bull tattoo that we had to cover up out of embarrassment, so at least we have him beat there. Why does any of this matter?  Hold on, I’m getting there.  In just a few months, one of the greatest video games from our childhood, Rampage, hits theaters in live-action movie form, and he’s the star.  So this week we’re giving you our play through of a very similar board game, King of Tokyo. King of Tokyo is a dice rolling game similar to Yahtzee in concept, with a few other layers added in.  The players race to be the first to 20 victory points, which are earned via number combinations on the dice, or by taking over Tokyo and remaining there for as long as possible.  Each player is competing against everyone else, and can also deal damage to opponents in order to knock them out of the game.  Energy cubes can be used to purchase cards that deliver one-time or continual effects to help your monster defeat the others.  The game retails for about $30 depending on the seller, unless you manage to find a first edition copy, which can run you upwards of $75. We’ve got new brews for you in this episode, too!  Schnell goes to one of our favorite breweries, Great Lakes, and tries out their Edmund Fitzgerald Porter.  Junior stays in-state and samples Badger State Brewing’s Sticky Bandit, Nelson stays with his island theme and drinks Longboard Island Lager from Kona Brewing Company, and Teej, as his MO, sticks with stout, this time Stompin’ Grounds Coffee Stout from Uinta Brewing Company.

What would you do with $173?  Would you buy a power plant?  Perhaps another house, or dos, to supply power to and earn more money from?  Those questions are answered in this week’s episode of Beer’d Gamers by none other than Teej, Mister One-Hundred-And-Seventy-Three-Dollars-Money-Bags himself. We’re playing Power Grid in this week’s episode, and we have a complete blast while doing so.  Power Grid is a Euro-style game where players use strategy rather than dice to outwit, outspend, and outearn the other players.  Each round the players bid on power plants, which are then used to power homes.  Players need to watch price points, resources needed and consumed, as well as how many homes each power plant is able to power.  It’s a game of money-management, but trust us, it is way more fun than just that. Power Grid retails for roughly $40-45 depending on the seller, and is another game that we definitely recommend. This week in beers we’ve got Teej drinking Teddy Bear Kisses by Upland Brewing Company, Schnell enjoys Arrogant Bastard Ale (because he is one) by Arrogant Brewing, Junior imbibes Buffalo Sweat (because he’s weird) from Tallgrass Brewing Company, and Nelson enjoys Hanalei IPA from Kona Brewing Company.

It discusses how to “run” your business rather than letter your business run you. - Plus much more...
