I'll never forget the day I learned about Facebook's $19 billion WhatsApp acquisition. Instead of celebrating my own recent success as an author, I found myself spiraling into a pit of self-doubt. “Why hadn't I created a simple messaging app?” I wondered, mentally berating myself for missing out on what seemed like an obvious opportunity.Sound familiar? We've all been told that comparing ourselves to others is toxic. It's the ultimate happiness killer, the thief of joy, the fast track to misery—or so conventional wisdom tells us. But here's the thing: If comparison is so destructive, why do our minds keep returning to it? What if there's more to this story than meets the eye?You can read the Nir And Far blog post on: https://www.nirandfar.com/social-comparison/Nir And Far, a podcast about business, behaviour and the brain by Nir Eyal. Social comparison sometimes can be positive, and inspire us to enhance our skills and capabilities, set higher standards for ourselves, and emulate positive habits. “Social comparison can motivate people to improve, but it can also promote judgmental, biased, and overly competitive or superior attitudes” according to Psychology Today. It can also set unrealistic standards, especially on social media, because we often only present the best versions of our lives. Constant exposure to images and accomplishments can distort one's sense of reality, and lead to feelings of jealousy or unworthiness. Social comparison can breed unhealthy levels of competition and instead of fostering cooperation, it may encourage individuals to prioritize their own success at the expense of others. In this episode, we discuss the impact of social media on mental health, focusing on the concepts of social comparison and social savoring. One route that social media can take to tank our mood has to do with social comparison, where we evaluate our own worth based on others. However, the negative impacts of this can be reduced through the practice of social savoring, which aims at deriving joy from other's experiences. We'll talk about how this approach can help us shift our personal story-telling in such a way that actually boosts our mood. This theory suggests that people engage in social comparisons to evaluate their abilities, opinions, and attributes, often choosing relevant others for comparison. In the realm of body image and self-perception, social comparison theory becomes particularly pertinent, as individuals tend to assess their own bodies in relation to societal ideals and the bodies of others. This process of comparison can have profound implications for body dissatisfaction and the development of disordered eating patterns. This raises thought-provoking questions about the impact of social comparison theory on body image and eating behaviors. In this episode, Shannon Beer explores these questions and offers valuable insights into the complex interplay between societal influences, individual perceptions, and the development of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. About The Guest: Shannon Beer is a registered nutritionist, health and confidence coach and certified Compassionate Mind Training facilitator. Shannon works with people aiming to improve their health through facilitating lasting behaviour change in their approach to diet, exercise and body image. She has developed a coaching framework that applies motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral coaching, and acceptance and commitment therapy-aligned processes in a client-centered alliance toward their own values-based goals.

We all compare ourselves. It's human nature! Evaluating ourselves is an innate human behavior, but when you evaluate yourself by making comparisons to others, it can be misleading and harmful to your flourishing. Matt explores the findings of Leon Festinger who was trying to figure out how people like to arrange themselves into groups, peer groups, social groups, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And so he started really trying to get an understanding of what that means. It's hard to measure yourself against other people in your peer group because peer groups are now infinitely huge and you make certain assumptions about who is and isn't in your peer group. People used to watch the Kardashians. How in the world can we relate to these people even though we live vastly different lives? What are the consequences of comparing ourselves to others? George Bush buys socks from Walmart and that look at how he's one of us makes him relatable. It was such an opportunistic, and it depends on which side of the political spectrum you live on, and how you react to that. But that was publicity. It was great publicity. Exactly. But that makes him relatable. And so what we're seeing in this day and age of the influencer, et cetera, et cetera, these people want to be relatable to the maximum number of people possible. And so they can afford and can curate the experience of seeing them, of, quote-unquote being with them in a very relatable way. And so you start to, we can't help it. It's kind of like we're wired to compare ourselves to these people and you can't compare yourselves to them. But we do, but we can't help it. And so this is why sometimes we get excited when we view one of these like pop celebrities as being bad. But that makes us quote-unquote "feel better about ourselves" because we can't help but compare ourselves to others in our peer groups. And also, and this is a really messed up part, is, once we've decided who's in our peer group, we will literally go out of our way to keep them in our peer group to keep them down. The Social Comparison Theory [00:00:00] FAWN: Welcome back everybody. Hello. Hello. How are you? [00:00:04] MATT: Hello everyone. [00:00:05] FAWN: What are you up to? Hello Martin. Hello, Wendy. YES, you can!!! Social comparison is when we compare certain aspects of ourselves (e.g., our behavior, opinions, status, and success) to other people to assess ourselves better. Or, as I do too often, a worse assessment of myself. When my kids were little, I beat myself up so much because I wasn't as organized as the mom, who had seven kids and two dogs, but still showed up to all the games of multiple kids with makeup on and cute shoes! Then there was the mom who decorated cakes like those shows on tv now. She was so talented and always brought the perfect season-appropriate cakes decorated just so perfect. I thought those moms were much better than I was as a mom. I felt like I didn't belong when I was near them. Social media gets the blame for many issues, but if you are like me, I can find things to compare my life with at every turn. Comparison will steal your joy and leave you feeling unfulfilled. Be fiercely confident in who God has created you to be and where He has placed you! I have a free download that I think will help you during the week when you feel like you're completely done! Ron Duan. What does a kid from Kyle Mountsier's freshman tennis team have to do with the Social Dilemma documentary? Apparently a lot, if you ask Dr. Nicole Lipkin. She spends time with Paul, Kyle and Michael talking them through the mental health issues facing our world, or if we're being honest, the issues we all are facing. Nothing's off the table, from mental agility, to social comparison, to the emotional contagions. What we talk about in this episode:0:00 Intro with Michael Cirillo, Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier.9:29 Dr. Nicole Lipkin understands group dynamics, meaning that she studies how people relate to each other, and she's found that if we understand our own internal workings, it will help us relate to those around us.“And so when I'm doing this work, it's not about like, follow these five steps to be a really great leader or have a really great team or have a great culture. It's about getting what's going inside here. Get what's going inside your team a little bit, understand a little bit about human dynamics and group dynamics, so we can all maneuver a little bit better. And when we group together, it's awesome, man, when we step on each other's feet, the world's not over. If we could learn to groove a little bit better, and know that like, it's all about being flexible and open and getting it and understanding our own internal workings like we wouldn't be fighting so much.”13:33 For some reason, we've minimized mental health, but Dr. Nicole Lipkin recognizes that mental health is what gives us our ability to do everything else.“We minimize the mental stuff. Because we don't see it. It's not tangible. Like we think about mental health, we think about mental wellness, we, you know, we think about the guy on the side of the street, freaking out screaming, talking to himself. We don't think about us on our every day, you know, our everyday work in life, but the reality is, mental health and mental wellness and flexibility, mental flexibility and agility. Like, that's how you're productive. That's how you wake up in the morning and get motivated to get out of bed.”26:53 What is an emotional contagion?“You smile, I smile, you frown, I frown, we mimic one another. And it can happen in our electronic communication, it can happen in our face to face communication. This is one of the reasons why you know we are having global contagion right now from the pandemic like this is one of the reasons why we're seeing a rise in road rage, a rise in domestic violence, crazy fights on airplanes, like all of that stuff.”30:10 Dr. Nicole Lipkin talked about finding your identity, and recognizing that it might not be the same for everyone. For some people, it's 18 hour work days. For others it's looking forward to a vacation. We need to be wary of social comparison and saying that one is better than the other.⭐️ Love the podcast? We've all been there. When someone you work with gets a promotion or someone gets a job that you always dreamed of then the comparison starts. This is referred to as social comparison and it might seem like maybe a healthy way to push yourself to do better, but in reality, it makes you feel bad about yourself and that it no longer becomes a healthy competition. Instead, it just turns into enviousness. Imagine that you've just come back from running your first half marathon. Imagine further that you're not a natural runner and that the half marathon took you months of preparation. You feel excited to share the news on social media when, lo-and-behold, you see a post of a friend that reads, “I just finished my 3rd Iron Man Triathlon.” You think, “Damn. I ran 13.1 miles, and my friend swam a few miles, biked 100, and then ran 26.2… and for the third time.” Suddenly, you feel bad about something that had felt so good just minutes before. You've engaged in social comparison, and that's something all humans do. How can we enjoy who we are, what we do, and so much of what life has to offer when our brains go into social comparison and make us feel worse? Fortunately, I know just the guy to ask. Dr. Ronald Siegel (https://drronsiegel.com/) is a professor at Harvard Medical School, a psychologist, and best-selling author who just wrote a must-read book called The Extraordinary Gift of Being Ordinary: Finding Happiness Right Where You Are. Ron explains how our brains can both harm us or serve us and how to regain control over the default programming in very user-friendly ways. The book has been widely loved by luminaries in the field of psychology and readers of all walks of life. So, listen in as Ron unpacks how to override the brain's tendency toward social comparison.
