In this month's episode of The Vorlauf Hour, Jack and special guest host Lucas Greta from Flix Brewhouse sit down with their Brew Dad Josh Miller of Flix Brewhouse Carmel Indiana. They chat about Craft Brewers Conference 2024, brewing competitions, and all the time Josh has lost to Toppling Goliath, and have an awesome conversation about how brewers like Josh look at the industry, and customer base and find a way to serve those customers best. I think you'll have a great time listening to our first interview with an out-of-state brewer. The Vorlauf Hour is the official podcast of the Iowa Brewers Guild.
Another CBC is a wrap, and we have some new World Beer Cup winnersThe Craft Brewers Conference wrapped up last week and as part of the festivities the World Beer Cup winners were announced. We're stoked to have a few home state winners in the mix, and we discovered a lot of new breweries that are (apparently) making great beer.In news that we love, VinePair shared some stats on the Booziest Counties in the US. Can you guess who was #1, and who has the most teetotalers? Some interesting beer-adjacent news as the FTC has banned non-competes. We've seen these battles play out in the past when a brewer from a popular brewery heads out on their own, most famously with Toppling Goliath. However, companies will still have some protection of their intellectual property via non-disclosure agreements. Also, some top execs could still be subject to non-competes. There will likely be some fighting on this one, so we'll stay tuned to see where it lands. How much would you pay for an (empty) can of beer?A record was set recently for the price of a single beer can. An empty one, at that. An undisclosed buyer paid over $60,000 for a vintage oil can of Perone Beer. I hope he feels he got his money's worth.More news of acquisitions, surprising closures, seal hunts, and spruce beers. Good times. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Prometheus was Ridley Scott's triumphant return to the franchise he helped launch with 1979's Alien. But unlike the myriad of sequels that followed the groundbreaking original, Prometheus forges new ground. Centering on the Engineers, it chronicles the creation of human life and the species' subsequent quest for answers that follows. It is during that quest the crew of the Prometheus discovers that those that gave them life had also engineered something far darker. Thus, for all its philosophizing, Prometheus is indeed a prequel to Alien. Whether the answers it alludes to are satisfying are up to the individual viewer. Our pod, as a microcosm, was split on that determination. One thing we did all agree on, though, is the brilliance with which Prometheus is crafted. From the sets, to the costume design, to the practical creature effects, Scott and his production team spared no detail in building toward the mystery of the "space jockey" and its ship. And despite not being as beloved as Alien or Aliens, Prometheus was met with generally positive reactions upon its release. With 313 reviews, it sits at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is also the highest grossing entry in the franchise with $403.4 million worldwide. Capt. Cash may not approve, but the Deacon certainly does. Big Hot Summer continues with a film that features more fire, but this time it's coming out of a dang lizard's mouth! Dustin & Logan watched the dragon apocalypse movie, Reign of Fire. Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. makes big beer in small batches What do you talk about when you get one of America's most legendary breweries on your show. Mushroom hunting, of course. As we chatted with Toppling Goliath Brewing Co.'s founder Clark Lewey and brewmaster Mike Saboe before the show we discovered we shared a love of mushrooms. We want to hunt morels, and they're experienced morel hunters. They love them so much they even brewed a beer in honor of morels, Scorpius Morchella. We promise the whole show isn't mushroom talk, but for a beer show there is a hell of a lot. Hang in there with us, we'll get to the beer soon enough. Toppling Goliath has some pretty major accolades. They're the 2021 US Beer Open Grand National Champions and Beer Advocate ranked them the #2 brewery in the world. Their Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout has held the #1 highest rated beer spot on Untappd since 2015. Clark and Mike say the high praise keeps them on their toes and they always strive to keep up their high standards. We sampled a couple of their brews, including Strawberry Shortcake Fandango, which is stellar. This leads us into lactose talk (there's no lactose in the Fandango) and ponder if it's the MSG of beer, as well as discussing another MSG-like contender, Phantasm powder. Stouts and Stouts and Stouts With beastly stouts like Assassin, Mornin' Delight, and the sought after Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout we talk... stouts. What goes into making a beer like this? Brewing, aging, blending. We talk secondary beer market, where a 2014 bottle of KBBS can cost up to $1,300. If you want the more affordable version get your name in the hat for a ticket to the release, where a single 12 oz. bottle will cost you $100. Not all Toppling Goliath stouts will cost you a C-note. Their Rover Truck is an easy-drinking Oatmeal Stout that you can grab for around $10 for a 16 oz. 4-pack. Now that's a deal. We haven't tried the KBBS yet, but we've got plans to get back on with the TG Brews crew for an online tasting. Until then, I'll keep trying to invite myself to bottle shares for a taste.
