Castle Ravenloft: Find the Icon of Ravenloft

Welcome to this week’s episode of Beer’d Gamers!  We take a step into the Dungeons and Dragons universe today, specifically into the depths of Castle Ravenloft, which, ironically enough, is also the name of the game!  Castle Ravenloft can be played solo or as a multiplayer adventure and comes with a book that sets up more than 30 different encounters for players, each one with its own storyline.  Players work together to solve the mysteries of the dungeon while defeating enemies that lurk within.  As players progress, experience points are earned and be cashed in to level up as the game goes on, much like a game of D&D. Castle Ravenloft has an MSRP of $64.95 and based on our opinions and the massive amount of replayability, we think it’s definitely worth the price tag and would serve as a great addition to your collection! This week in beers we’ve got Teej sitting out nursing his hangover with a V8 Energy, Schnell mixing it up with Pear Street’s Breakfast Beer and New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk, and Nelson brings it back Wisconsin-way with Spotted Cow from New Glarus.

Hello and welcome to Beer’d Gamers!  We’re still a podcast, we still play board games, and we still do it while trying to drink as many beers as we can.  My name is Nelson, and with my today are my fellow Beer’d Gamers, Teej and Schnell!  This week we’re playing Settlers of Catan, or just Catan, depending on when you started playing and what version you have. Catan is the godfather of all worker placement games, and what we in the biz like to call the “gateway game.”  Chances are that when you moved on to harder and more illicit games, Catan was the game that spurred you on.  And if you haven’t made the move yet, find a friend who has a copy, make sure no cops are around, and pack yourself a table full of Catan.

This week we’ve got Robert along for one more!  We’re challenging everyone’s logical thinking and tile-laying skills with the classic board game Carcassonne.  Carcassonne pits four players against each other in a race to score points based on the tiles that they lay.  Roads can be built, villages and cloisters erected, and farming fields claimed for points.  Once the last tile is played, players count up their scores and a winner is determined.  Carcassonne is an all-time classic and has an MSRP of $34.99. This week in beer we’ve got Nelson still drowning in Coors Light (Junior owes him big), Teej still drinking Oscar’s Chocolate Oatmeal Stout (but if you listen long enough you’ll hear him switch it up; what a twist!), Robert taps out and switches to black cherry favored water, and Schnell goes full-on Packers with Green 19 IPA from Titletown Brewing Company.

Hello, and welcome to the dungeon, baby!  Wake up, because it’s time to play Munchkin, Steampunk edition! Munchkin is a multiplayer card game where the players take on the roles of heroes attempting to enter a dungeon and defeat the minions, monsters, and more that lurk within.  With the Steampunk expansion, we also get cool things like gears, goggles, and more to improve our stats and help in our fight against evil. This week in beerded goodness we’ve got Robert on the show, who interestingly enough isn’t drinking beer at all!  He’s got another Mike’s Harder Lemonade, this time watermelon flavor, which triggers sugar-addled PTSD in all of us.  Schnell goes flavored, as well, with Shipwrecked Cherry Wheat Ale from Door County Brewing Company; Nelson continues his self-flagellation with more Coors Light, and Teej brings it all home with Oscar’s Chocolate Oatmeal Stout by Sand Creek Brewing Company, AREALWISCONSINBEER!

Hey, Hey!  We’re back in action with a special guest this week!  Join us in welcoming Robert to the fold!  Robert is a good friend of Teej’s, and he’s with us filling in for Junior, who’s currently on hiatus with a case of The Marriage.  As Ben gets ready to marry the designer of our logo, Katie, Robert was kind enough to fill in and play games with us! This week we’re playing Magic Commander Anthology 2, the most recent release of the Commander Anthology series.  The Anthology series take some of the most powerful preconstructed decks that Wizards of the Coast has released as previous entries in the Commander series and puts them together in a boxed set.  The stock Commanders, which we are playing with right out of the box, include Daretti, Scrap Savant, Atraxa, Preator’s Voice, The Mimeoplasm, and Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas. This week in beers we’ve got Teej going thematic with Magic Dragon Double IPA from Hop Haus, Robert goes harder with Mike’s Harder Lemonade, Schnell goes dark with Night Rain Porter from O’so, and Nelson takes one for the team and drinks leftover Coors Light from Junior’s bachelor party.  Stay tuned to see if he survives, or if he’s felled by The Silver Bullet.  I mean, the mountains weren’t even blue yet…

Hey, hey! We’re back!  This week we’re back with our first full-game playthrough in a while, and we thank you for sticking around while our schedules have been a complete nightmare.  This week we’ve got Teej, Schnell, and Nelson (Junior is on hiatus until after his wedding next month) playing a very fun game called Ex Libris.  Ex Libris is a resource management game, but rather than sheep, food, bricks, etc., we’re trying to collect certain kinds of books to build our individual libraries, while doing our best to avoid the banned texts that will net us negative points when scoring is triggered. Ex Libris is played in rounds until end game is trigged by one player having shelved 15 cards of books.  Players are then scored on things like secret objective achieved, shelf stability, variety of the books, and many other ways their collection can earn them points.  When it’s all said and done, the player with the most points at the end wins.  We all really, really enjoyed this game, and we think you would, too!  Ex Libris has an MSRP of $59.99, and is definitely a game you should be adding to your collection at home. This week in beers we've got Teej double-fisting Spotted Cow from New Glarus and Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing Company, Schnell downing Honey Blonde Ale from Central Waters Brewing Company, and Nelson is doing across the pond to have some New Castle Brown Ale, which used to be brewed in Newcastle, but is now brewed and marketed by Heineken.

Vampires, cats, dragons, and wizards, oh my!  This week we’re back with another episode of our favorite CCG, Magic: The Gathering.  We have a ton of fun playing Commander format Magic when we all get together, so we thought it would be fun to showcase the latest precon decks in the Commander series, Commander 17. Commander 17 focused on tribal decks, so each of these decks fit that theme.  The new Eminence ability was also introduced, which allows for these commanders to start manipulating the battlefield before they even make it there.  Teej is playing Draconic Domination, which is obviously dragon-themed.  Schnell and his cats are running Feline Ferocity.  Junior rolls with the patriarch of the Markov clan, Edgar Markov, and plays Vampiric Bloodlust.  Nelson seeks to use wizards and countermagic to run everyone’s day, so he’s playing Arcane Wizardry.  In order to show off how these decks play directly out of the box, everyone is playing a completely un-modified version of each deck. This week in beer Teej steps up his game as he’s recovering from a nasty cold and goes with Maibock from Capital Brewing, Schnell channels his inner Ronald McDonald and drinks Ocular Pat-Down from Odd Side Ales, Junior throws a jab at Teej’s deck and drinks Magic Dragon Double IPA from Hop Haus Brewing Company, and Nelson aims to make his opponents suffer as he drinks Tears of My Enemies from Ale Asylum.

What the hell was that?  A fart?  A stomach rumble?  The amount of questionable noises coming from Junior’s chair this week are a little disconcerting, but at least Pixel Glory is here to save us! Pixel Glory is a deck-building game that sees the players form a team of wizards who draft spells to build their own “spell decks” in order to venture into a dungeon and defeat the bosses therein that threaten the lives of the villagers outside.  The players work together to weaken the monsters, but only those who score the killing blow are able to score the victory points.  The game is played until all monsters are defeated, and the player with the most points at the end wins. Explorers is a multiplayer Magic game, with each player competing against the others (2-4 players are supported) while also having the option to “explore” and then “exploit” tiles from the board, which can work either for or against the player.  As longtime Magic lovers, this game was a no-brainer for us, and you’ll definitely be able to tell how much fun we had playing this game (and probably how many beers we had while playing, too.  Hint: it was lots).  The game retails for $64.99 MSRP, and is a game that we highly recommend, especially for Magic fans looking for a new way to play. Listen up, nerds, this week’s episode is all about science!  We’re playing the card drafting game Ion: A Compound Building Game, which sees players playing cards of different elements in an attempt to bind them into compounds to score more points than their opponents.  It may sound like a weird premise for a board game, but if I had this when I was in high school, I know I’d have done much better than that C (of course, studying would have helped, too).  Thankfully I loved chemistry when I took it in college, so this game was a natural step for me, as you’ll hear in my review. Ion is a great way that chem-heads and non-chem-heads alike can come together to play a quick game while still learning something.  It’s a relative inexpensive game; it retails for roughly $20. This week in inebriationland, we’ve got Schnell drinking Outboard from a Beer’d Gamers staple brewery, Milwaukee (MKE) Brewing, Nelson continues his run of Point Brewing beers with their SPA, Junior stays in Wisconsin and drinks Satisfaction Jackson from Ale Asylum, and Teej continues his descent into a life of constant debauchery and shirtlessness with Polygamy Nitro Porter from Wasatch Brewery.

Terraforming Mars is both a cooperative and competitive game, where players work together to make Mars habitable, while still trying to achieve their own objectives and increase their own victory points.  Players work together to raise the temperature of the planet, to increase its oxygen level, and to create ocean and forest areas.  Cities are created, pets are bred, and many other things occur as players race to accrue VP. Terraforming Mars retails for about $50 or so, depending on the seller.  We really enjoyed this game; we recommend it to people who love resource collecting/exploiting games, as well as fans of cooperative and competitive games.  Hopefully your friends aren’t as terrible as Nelson’s, though. This week in beer selections we’ve got Nelson drinking Beyond the Pale IPA from Point Brewery, Teej enjoys Polish Moon from a Beer’d Gamers favorite brewery, Milwaukee (MKE) Brewing Company, Schnell blasts off into space with Light Speed Pale Ale from Toppling Goliath Brewing Company, and Junior, who still has the healthiest liver of all of us, decides to put his liver to the test and is double fisting Schell’s Snowstorm Rye Ale and Rock Hard Red from Gray Brewing Company.  Think of that last one what you will.  We totally did.  There’s a dog on the label for God’s sake.

The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game sees players taking on the role of one of a handful of characters from the series, working together with their character-specific deck of cards to solve mysteries, find clues, defeat enemies, and win a final challenge against the board.  The game is published by Evil Hat Games and retails for about $25-30 depending on the seller.  Even if you’re unfamiliar with the book series, the game proves to be quite fun! This week in alcohols we have Schnell and Junior both drinking beer from Pearl Street Brewery; Schnell is drinking Breakfast Beer and Junior is drinking one of their IPAs, Linalool.  Nelson is, unfortunately, severely disappointed by Onyx Black Lager from Point Brewing Company.  Teej, surprisingly, is back at it with a single-digit ABV beer, Fireside Flannel from Lift Bridge Brewery.

Why does any of this matter?  Hold on, I’m getting there.  In just a few months, one of the greatest video games from our childhood, Rampage, hits theaters in live-action movie form, and he’s the star.  So this week we’re giving you our play through of a very similar board game, King of Tokyo. King of Tokyo is a dice rolling game similar to Yahtzee in concept, with a few other layers added in.  The players race to be the first to 20 victory points, which are earned via number combinations on the dice, or by taking over Tokyo and remaining there for as long as possible.  Each player is competing against everyone else, and can also deal damage to opponents in order to knock them out of the game.  Energy cubes can be used to purchase cards that deliver one-time or continual effects to help your monster defeat the others.  The game retails for about $30 depending on the seller, unless you manage to find a first edition copy, which can run you upwards of $75. We’ve got new brews for you in this episode, too!  Schnell goes to one of our favorite breweries, Great Lakes, and tries out their Edmund Fitzgerald Porter.  Junior stays in-state and samples Badger State Brewing’s Sticky Bandit, Nelson stays with his island theme and drinks Longboard Island Lager from Kona Brewing Company, and Teej, as his MO, sticks with stout, this time Stompin’ Grounds Coffee Stout from Uinta Brewing Company.

We’re playing Power Grid in this week’s episode, and we have a complete blast while doing so.  Power Grid is a Euro-style game where players use strategy rather than dice to outwit, outspend, and outearn the other players.  Each round the players bid on power plants, which are then used to power homes.  Players need to watch price points, resources needed and consumed, as well as how many homes each power plant is able to power.  It’s a game of money-management, but trust us, it is way more fun than just that. What's that?  Who are we that can summon beer and comedy without brewing or comedy experience?  There are some who call us....The Beer'd Gamers. Now that our Monty Python and the Holy Grail joke is out of the way, let us welcome you along on our journey through Camelot, for this week we give you a play through of Shadows Over Camelot, published by Days of Wonder and retailing at roughly $50, depending on the seller. Shadows Over Camelot sees players taking on the roll of various Knights of the Round Table, joining forces to defeat the game board.  Over the course of the quest, a traitor may or may not be revealed, either through his own actions or from accusations from other players.  The game can be played with up to seven people, which makes it ideal for game night. In this episode, we're all drinking beers from different breweries.  Teej enjoys Guinness from, well, Guinness.  Schnell gives a porter a go when he drinks Lake Louie Brewing's Tommy's Porter.  Junior goes with a favorite brewery of ours, Dogfish Head, and drinks their Flesh and Blood IPA.  Nelson enters the fantasy realm with Dragon Flute, from Karben4 Brewing.  Bottoms up!

Have you ever traveled through space minding your own business only to be attacked by space pirates?  Or how about being stopped by a merchant trying to peddle his wares, only to be a space priate in disguise?  Have you ever played Starfarers of Catan and felt like every damn card you draw is space pirates?  Yeah, us, too. This week, join us as we play through Starfarers of Catan, a Euro-style game set in the Catan-verse.  Much like Settlers of Catan, Starfarers is a game of resource collection and development, where players race to be the first to the victory points goal.  Points can be earned in a variety of ways, which allows for multiples avenues to acheive victory. Unfortunately, the game has been out of print since 1995, so unless you've got an old copy lying around, chances are this game will be hard to come by.  There have been rumblings from the publisher, Mayfair Games, about a reprint, but they never seem to have a date.  Regardless, if you can get your hands on a copy, we highly recommend it. Oh, yeah, and Junior inadvertantly gets highly vulgar to start off, so make sure you listen for that.  Trust us, you can't miss it.  Sorry, Mom.

Panic, sickness, disease, and death grip the earth.  A new and seemingly unstoppable disease has broken out, and the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of four guys sitting around a card table drinking beer and insulting each other.  The debut episode of Beer’d Gamers sees the fellas, along with the help of Contingency Planner Alec Baldwin, frantically trying to save the world (and enjoy a few brews) before it’s destroyed. This week we’re playing through Pandemic, a cooperative game for 2-4 players.  The players play against the board in a race to eradicate four diseases before they spread enough to wipe humanity off of the planet.  Pandemic is a great intro game for people who are more casual board game players but are looking to take their first step into more complex and strategic games; the Beer’s Gamers highly recommend it!  You can usually find it retailing for somewhere between $20-30, depending on the seller. Beer selections for this episode include Murphy’s Imported Stout, from Murphy Brewery in Ireland, for Teej, Dr. Venom IPA from Ale Asylum for Schnell, Ghost Hammer IPA from Stone Brewing for Junior, and 12th of Never Ale from Lagunitas for Nelson.  Raise a beer and listen along with us!

Evolution: Climate

In our second episode, we are playing through the game Evolution, with the Climate expansion.  Evolution sees its players create and adapt species to an ever-changing climate.  Food can be abundant or scarce, predators can evolve at any time, and just when players think they've found the perfect combination of traits for their species, the climate can change and wipe them out. This a fun strategy game where players compete against each other and the board to have the most dominate species to defeat your opponents by having more food or attacking their creatures and killing them.  This is a game we had a ton of fun playing together, and it comes highly recommended from us to you.  Evolution: Climate is more fun than the base game, Evolution, and can be found for about $45. In this episode, Teej puts down Ruination from Stone Brewing, Schnell goes classy with Champagne Tortoise from Karben4 (a Beer'd Gamers favorite brewery), Junior gets patriotic and downs 'Merica from Surly Brewing, and Nelson goes full-on plague with Sam Adams Black Lager.
