September 9, 2025 ~ Kelly Wolgamott, vice president of Pure Michigan, joins Chris and Jamie to discuss the launch of their new fall campaign!
This episode of Behind the Mitten finds us back in our second "home" of Gaylord Michigan, along with our co-host, and director of the Gaylord Tourism Bureau, Paul Beachnau. A regular on the show, and one of our best buddies, Paul takes around Gaylord, to spots both brand new, and old favorites. Come along as we go all outdoors, and a little bit inside, in Gaylord Michigan.Did you know that you can see elk literally right downtown Gaylord? It's a true story, and they've just built an awesome new viewing platform that you can get incredible vistas of these majestic animals that is located just minutes from I-75. Paul takes us on a tour, and record on-site. The elk herd in Gaylord is about 60 strong....and these animals, which can weigh upwards of 800 pounds and stand six feet tall, are particulary engaging.....or alarming....in the fall, when the bugling and rutting reaches a peak. Perfect time to stop by, or to do a deeper dive viewing the elk at the nearby Pigeon River State Forest. Where to find all the amazing elk in Gaylord Michigan, and how to view them best.Next, we hit the local disco where we find sparkling gems to dance the night away to. OK, that might be a stretch, but what we encountered was equally awesome...and sparkly. We catch up with regular Mark Copeland from Jay's Sporting Goods who always knows the coolest equipment, the best seasonal wear, and just what Michiganders need each season. We learn about the fascinating Yooperlites, those crazy glo-in-the-dark rocks that are causing obsessions around the state. Jay's has some super cool gear to help you find them, plus tons more for all your fall adventures. Next, another BTM regular, and great friend, Jordan Awrey comes back to chat about all things Snowbelt Brewing, where he is officially their marketing manager, and unofficially the "mayor" of Gaylord. Please don't be offended actual Mayor Todd, it's just that Jordan is such a great cheerleader of Gaylord, and turns that passion into action, in the form of their summer concert series and so much more. We always love to hear what Jordan has planned next, because it's honestly always amazing. Finally, a visit to Gaylord would NOT be complete without a visit to Michigan's Most Spectacular Resort, Treetops. We love using Treetops as a base for exploring Northern Michigan, we love joining friends at the resort for pizza in the pub, or for skiing or EXTREME tubing during the season. The fall, they are offering a series of Fall Progressive Dinners at Treetops that we would be beyond happy to attend. Book your tickets now, and you will be delighted not just by the seasonal menu, but also by the incredible autumnal views that you'll get to take in via your very own golf cart tour as you cruise the award-winning courses at Treetops while enjoying a cocktail and snacks. No need to swing your club this time, just drive along with a guide who will give you the deets on this incredible spot. Then, converge at the top of the hill at Legends restaurant for a mulit-course meal. Barry Ownes, GM of Treetops gives us all the tips on bookjng this experience. https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenhttps://www.instagram.com/behindthemitten_/https://twitter.com/BehindTheMitten#BTM #amyandgonzo #BehindtheMitten And you can find all sorts of things on our website, https://www.amyandgonzo.com/
It's always a pleasure to get to go back to Muskegon, we just love this city located on the shores of Lake Michigan, and the very cool things that are happening here. On this episode of Behind the Mitten we'll introduce you to Skee town, and take you to cool places both old and new, hear all about one of the best Irish music festivals in the land, learn about a major art expansion, and eat some really good pizza. We kick off with the effusive Amber Mae Petersen, Marketing and Operations Manager for Visit Muskegon and her co-hort Lashelle Mikesell, Digital Marketing Coordinator. They give us a great overview of downtown, and the many nice changes that have been happening here, from businesses moving locations, to new ones opening up. One thing we mention is the beautiful Frauenthal Center, where they host the magical Singing Christmas Tree every year, plan ahead and get those tickets early. One of the largest, and best, Irish musical festivals in the country has happened for the last 25 years in Muskegon. The Michigan Irish Music Festival is happening September 11 through the 14th, and we have Morgan Witmer, the volunteer marketing coordinator for the festival on to tell us all about it. We were excited to learn that new this year there will be a Ceili (KAY-lee), which is a special Irish square dance that anyone can participate in. Organizers are pumped that on Saturday night, Skerryvore, a band from Scotland is coming for the first time. I'm excited to check out the Celtic Canines exhibit on Sunday, where I can meet (and pet!) all the breeds of traditional Irish dogs. There is also a cool Irish Instrument petting zoo on Sunday that sounds incredibly interesting. There are all sorts of Irish culture, food and drink classes as well, please be sure to register ahead of time. We have to give a shout-out to all everyone who gives thier time to this amazing event, it is entirely volunteer run. We've learned over the years that sometimes everyting just comes together, whether you planned it or not, and our time in Muskegon proved this once again. While recording at the new CORE Plaza, we realized that our friends from the Muskegon Museum of Art were also in the house. So, we invited Kirk Hallman, the Executive Director, and Cathy Mott, Assistant Director to join us and give us an update on their major expansion. We had them on last year, so it was nice to hear that it has been an incredible journey, and that all of Michigan is lucky to have this resource. The CORE Plaza is a lovely new spot for Muskegon, and has the feel of a place you might find in a much larger city. Co-owner Troy Wasserman joins us to share how this historic building remodel came to be, shares the businesses that call CORE home, including the very fun Liquid Assests Bar that runs all down one side, and talks about his family's long history in Muskegon. Stop by for lunch, or a meeting, or happy hour, or a hair cut.....CORE Plaza is a hot spot of activity, much like Muskegon.www.facebook.com/behindthemittenhttpswww.instagram.com/behindthemitten_twitter.com/BehindTheMitten#BTM #amyandgonzo #BehindtheMitten And you can find all sorts of things on our website, https://www.amyandgonzo.com/

Whether you call it the Blue Water Area, Michigan's Thumbcoast, or just the Port Huron area, this part of Michigan is both amazingly blue-ti-ful, and chock full of fun things to do. We had a great time recording this episode of Behind the Mitten, as we were lucky enough to get to set up right below the beauitul Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron. Let's discover the blue together! We'll start off the show with an overview of the area from our friends at the Blue Water Visitors Bureau. Joining us are Michael Hensley, President and CEO of the Blue Water Area CVB, and Katie Stepp, a Port Huron secret beach expert, as well as the Vice President of Marketing for BWA. We'll learn about some of the great historical connections to Port Huron, as well as about the importance of the river and lakes in this area, including the mighty St. Clair River, which flowed on by as we recorded.Katie and Michael took us out on the town for a great evening, and you'll get to hear all about our experience in the entertainment district downtown. We were lucky to get to stay right along the Black River at City Flats Hotel, an excellent choice for exploring, as well as shopping, wine tasting, and watching the drawbridge open for boats. From here, you are just steps away from all the action. The Wrigley Center located right downtown offers up a true entertainment complex, and something all new for Port Huron. Find multiple bars, an arcade, restaurants, retail shopping, and even a fowling arena here. We talk to Darren Lee, the energetic general manager of this hot spot, and maybe even go to a "secret" speakeasy with him, a very cool place called The Laundry Room. His brand new restaurant, Port Steak and Seafood, opens on the second floor of the Wrigley Center on August 22.During your visit to Port Huron, you can "wet your whistle"and take a self guided tour around the thumb and experience the diverse beverage scene they have here, including five easy stops right in Port Huron. Kate shares how you can win a free hotel night by completing this fun challenge, plus other insider visitor tips. We'll finish off the show, and our night in Port Huron experiencing Quay Street from a secret speak easy located inside an ax-throwing bar. Yes, in downtown Port Huron! Head to Bootlegger's Ax Company for some good old fashioned ax slinging, cold drinks, and a fun menu. Or if you'd like inventive cocktails with a very urban feel, ask where to find Mooncursers, a fun little speakeasy which has a very cool view of the river and Port Huron visitors. We'll talk with owner Gene Harrison who is something of a rennaissance man, and definitely someone who is invested in and loves Port Huron. After our visit, we can understand why.Plan your visit to Port Huron and Michigan's Thumbcoast at BlueWater.org.

Historic Marshall sits at the crossroads of Michigan, nestled right alongside where the I-94 and I-69 highways meet in the central southern part of state. Known for it's well preserved architecture and many interesting museums, Marshall is well worth a visit any time of the year. We start off at one of Marshall's most famous, and delicious places, historic Schuler's Restaurant, where we visit with (kind of) new owner Sue Damron. We love Sue's story, she started at Schuler's in 1998 as owner Hans Schuler's executive assistant. She worked her way up, and was named President and Managing Partner in 2014, and sole owner in 2019. She has a vision, and she is making it a reality in Marshall.Sue and her team recently opened a brand new, and much needed event space in downtown Marshall called Venue 19Zero9. The name is a reference to when the building was originally constructed. The new space features fesh clean lines, a cozy front reception area, a huge space to throw a great party in, and plenty of private spots for your wedding party to get ready in. There are some people who are interested in things, and then there are people who are passionate. Mike Schragg is really, really into the United States Post Office. He was a mail carrier and post master for years in Marshall, in fact, the post office there is named for HIM, the only one named after a living person. He took this passion and over the last few decades has created what might be the most intersting museum in Marshall, the United States Postal Museum. You have to call to make an appointment for this one, but let me tell you, it's worth it.One of the biggest events of the year is the Marshall Historic Home Tour which is happening this September 6 and 7. We have on the chair of the tour Debbi Denedict, who gives us all the details on how to best enjoy this special time. Note: do not miss the Honolulu House.Follow John and Amy:Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitter at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

Justin and Emily are fully caffeinated and slightly unhinged to tackle a lineup of industry challenges both perennial and unprecedented. Justin and Emily celebrate Plymouth Canton's second-place ProStart national finish before diving into the hospitality industry's latest headaches – from Pure Michigan funding stuck in political limbo to the annual H-2B visa lottery keeping northern Michigan operators guessing. Food policy expert Maggie Gentile breaks down the rapidly evolving "Make America Healthy Again" movement that's already pushed 80 bills across 30 states targeting food dyes, seed oils, and other ingredients. Is the industry facing a simple food fad or a smoking-level societal shift? Between Louisiana restaurants potentially posting "we use seed oils" warnings and outright bans on artificial colors, operators face yet another angle of anxiety. The conversation takes several delightful detours, including Emily's inexplicable pitch for "Coney drip cuffs" and whether GLP-1 weight loss pills will reshape dining behaviors. Capitol Day (June 4th) gets a plug, Kalamazoo's sports facility funding earns praise, and somehow The Bear's Season 4 release date sneaks into the conversation – because some priorities never change, even when recording back in the studio.
