Abstract: Sperm storage by females after mating for species-dependent periods is used widely among animals with internal fertilization to allow asynchrony between mating and ovulation. Many mammals store sperm in the lower oviduct where specific glycans on epithelial cells retain sperm to form a reservoir. Binding to oviduct cells suppresses sperm intracellular Ca2+ and increases sperm longevity. We investigated the mechanisms by which a specific oviduct glycan, 3-O-sulfated Lewis X trisaccharide (suLeX), prolongs the lifespan of porcine sperm. Using targeted metabolomics, we report that binding to suLeX diminishes the abundance of the precursor to ubiquinone and suppresses formation of fumarate, a specific citric acid cycle component, diminishing the activity of the electron transport chain and reducing the production of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS). The enhanced sperm lifespan in the oviduct may be due to suppressed ROS production as many reports have demonstrated toxic effects of high ROS concentrations on sperm. CoQ10 stands for coenzyme Q10. It is used for ATP, which is in turn critical to cell respiration which provides over 90% of human cell energy. Ubiquinol is the reduced alcohol form of CoQ10. It's supposed to be the most effective and easily absorbed form. On the other hand, ubiquinone is the oxidized ketone form. Statins are HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. When they stop cholesterol production, they also decrease CoQ10 production. There is a lot of great research on ubiquinone & ubiquinol. However, the study results conflict. There seems to be evidence that we can elevate our levels of CoQ10. But it's not so clear that it works. Part of the evidence is that it's difficult to assume an improvement in biological status based on mitochondrial improvement. COQ10-Ubiquinone is an antioxidant that is critically important for athletes and for those individuals on Statins, a medication used to lower cholesterol. It is highly recommended for all individuals because it is a powerful antioxidant, so it helps battle free radicals, which cause injury to the body.   CoQ10, also known as Coenzyme Q10, is the most abundant antioxidant in the human body. An antioxidant scoops up harmful free radicals. Free radicals are constantly being produced by the aging process and by exercise. Free radicals can then cause DNA damage, inflammation, and can also increase the production of stress hormones. In order to reduce these processes, it is necessary to take antioxidants.   CoQ10 is actually the only antioxidant that is found within our cells. Inside our cells we have organelles called mitochondria. The job of mitochondria is to produce ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) and this is what our body uses for energy. This energy production cannot happen if we are lacking CoQ10. This deficiency is found particularly in athletes because of their high metabolic demand.  Without this repletion of CoQ10, one can experience muscle soreness, accumulated fatigue and waste products like lactic acid, so endurance and performance is compromised. In fact, muscles just don't heal.   Robert Seik, a pharmacist, warns that individuals taking statins to lower cholesterol can experience a depletion of CoQ10, which leads to muscle soreness. It is very important to replenish this because the tissue that normally has the densest accumulation of CoQ10 in the body is the heart. Depletion of CoQ10 in the heart leads to death. So if you are on statins, it is very important to take CoQ10. If you are an athlete it is also very important to take CoQ10. Often, you will see long distance runners dying from cardiovascular failure. This is often caused by CoQ10 depletion in the heart.   The form of CoQ10 supplementation is very important. The powdered form of CoQ10 compressed into tablets is a poor form because we typically only absorb 1-2% of it when we take it by mouth. Ubiquinol is an inadequate form because it enters the blood stream but it does not go into the cells. A Superior form of CoQ10 is in the form of Ubiquinone.   CoQ10 Power 100 by Triton Nutrition contains the form Ubiquinone. This form is nanoparticlized and it is dissolved in oil because fats enhance the absorption of CoQ10. So, this form can be easily absorbed and it can enter the cells, but you must also have the proper dose.  CoQ10 Power 100 comes in 100 mg capsules. Make sure you don't take your CoQ10 at the same time as your fish oil because it can actually inhibit the absorption rate.   If you take CoQ10 as an athlete, you can actually improve your performance, endurance, strength and recovery. You can increase your dosage of CoQ10 when you are approaching an event.   A recommended dosage of CoQ10 is 100-200 mg a day, but it has been proven to be safe in clinical studies with a dosage up to 400-1200 mg a day because we can actually use it to treat disease. It has been shown to treat Essential Hypertension and certain heart arrhythmias and in athletes it has been shown to decrease creatinine, which is a waste product and help rid the body of lactic acid.   by Robert Seik, PharmD
