You'll find some amazing brands we trust—and by checking them out, you're helping us keep the podcast going. https://pepties.com/partners/ Before we jump in, I want to quickly address a few comments I have received about the content here. Normally, I wouldn't spend time on something like this, but just for clarity — I have over nine years of formal education, including a Doctorate in Pharmacy, and sixteen years of clinical experience. That includes serving as an adjunct professor at a U.S. pharmacy school and working in oncology and inflammatory disease at a teaching hospital. And yes — for now, you just hear my voice, but that may change. I do plan to incorporate video in the future; I've simply held off because it takes significantly more time to produce, and my priority has been getting the education out to you consistently. Remember, the content is free and meant for education. If it's not for you, that's completely fine — you don't have to listen. It takes a lot of time and energy to put this together, and tuning in is entirely your choice. For my other listeners, thank you for your support and gratitude over the past few years. Now, today we're diving into a compound ATX‑304. It's often referred to as "exercise in a pill". And after we go through the science together you'll see why. We'll cover the back‑story, how it works, how it differs from typical mitochondrial supplements, animal and human data so far, who this may and may not be for — and importantly, what to watch out for.  The Backstory & Why It's Getting Attention ATX-304, was first developed in Sweden by Betagenon AB as a small-molecule AMPK activator designed to mimic the metabolic benefits of exercise and caloric restriction — with the goal of improving obesity, insulin resistance, and overall metabolic health. Early preclinical work in obese and diabetic mice showed impressive results, including better glucose uptake, enhanced fat-burning, improved insulin sensitivity, and even cardiovascular benefits. Human data followed in 2016–2017, where people with type 2 diabetes already on metformin took ATX-304 for about 28 days. Those studies showed reductions in fasting and plasma glucose, improved insulin resistance, and strong safety and tolerability. Today, Betagenon has evolved into Amplifier Therapeutics, and ATX-304 is now in Phase 2 development for metabolic, cardiovascular, and liver-related conditions, with ongoing work to refine oral delivery and broaden its potential uses. What exactly does AMPK do? Think of AMPK as a fuel gauge for your cells. When your cells are running low on energy (like when you haven't eaten, exercised, or your cells are stressed), AMPK turns on. When it's on, it tells the cell to stop storing energy (less fat and cholesterol production), start using energy (burn sugar and fat for fuel), and clean up damaged parts (autophagy, or cellular housekeeping). Basically, AMPK flips the switch from "energy saving" mode to "energy spending" mode, similar to how your body behaves during exercise or fasting. If AMPK is off or underactive, your cells tend to store energy instead of using it, which contributes to weight gain, insulin resistance, and low metabolic activity. So, activating AMPK — like with ATX‑304 — is like giving your body a nudge to burn energy, improve metabolism, and clean up the cells, even without intense exercise. And beyond just turning on AMPK, ATX‑304 also acts as a mild mitochondrial activator, meaning it helps the cell's "power plants" (mitochondria) run more optimally, increasing energy expenditure.  Because of this mechanism, ATX‑304 is sometimes called an "exercise mimetic." Even though it's not a substitute for movement, it triggers many of the same downstream pathways. How It Differs From Mitochondrial "Supplements" There are many supplements out there that claim "boost mitochondria" (e.g., PQQ, CoQ10, NAD precursors). These may support mitochondrial health or function, but typically they don't change the body's energy‑balance set‑point or shift you into a state of enhanced energy usage. ATX‑304, however, directly activates AMPK (the master switch) and supports mitochondrial output — so you get signaling plus hardware improvement. This dual action is what sets ATX‑304 apart.  Also: many mitochondrial supplements lack robust human metabolic‑dysfunction data; ATX‑304 has animal + early human trial data. What About Safety? In human trials (~28 days, T2D patients on metformin) ATX‑304 was safe, well tolerated, lowered fasting plasma glucose and insulin resistance. But because it's still early stage, long‑term safety and outcomes (fat‑loss, muscle preservation beyond short term, cardiovascular endpoints) are not fully proven yet. One of the most exciting things about ATX‑304 is that it encourages the body to burn fat while sparing lean muscle. Because AMPK activation improves muscle glucose uptake and mitochondrial efficiency, your body can preferentially use fat for energy instead of breaking down muscle. Preclinical and early human studies suggest it can reduce fat mass while preserving muscle, which makes it especially interesting for anyone transitioning off GLP‑1 therapies or looking to maintain muscle while losing fat. Practical Dosing in Wellness Context Some peptide clinics use ATX‑304 in doses ranging from 100 to 400 mg a day. It usually comes in 100 mg or 200 mg capsules, and people often take it in the morning to match the body's peak metabolic activity. Cost The last thing I want to discuss is cost. ATX‑304 is currently quite expensive, and there are a few reasons for that. Only a handful of companies manufacture it, so production volumes are small. The synthesis is complex, and the supply chain for key precursors is limited. Since it's still in early development (Phase 2), economies of scale haven't been established yet.  Thanks for listening to The Peptide Podcast.  If you want to support what we do, head over to our Partners Page. You'll find some amazing brands we trust—and by checking them out, you're helping us keep the podcast going. Until next time, be well, and have a happy, healthy week.

In this week's solo episode of The Energy Code, Dr. Mike Belkowski introduces a brand-new addition to what he calls the Mitochondrial Matrix: minerals. Often overlooked in the world of biohacking, minerals are the true foundation of energy production, cellular repair, and mitochondrial performance.   Dr. Mike dives deep into the biophysics of mineralization — why trace minerals like magnesium, copper, iron, and selenium are indispensable for redox balance, ATP synthesis, and overall cellular vitality. You'll learn how mineral depletion from modern farming and processed foods is silently driving fatigue, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction — and how to rebuild that foundation with the right forms of mineral support.   This episode also unpacks the three pillars of mineralization — Folic Acid, Humic Acid, and Marine Minerals—revealing how each uniquely restores redox balance, enhances detoxification, and recharges your mitochondria. Plus, Dr. Mike announces BioLight's newest supplement, BioMinerals, combining all three of these powerhouse ingredients in one synergistic formula.   Expect an eye-opening blend of ancient wisdom, modern biophysics, and practical strategies for anyone looking to upgrade their biology from the inside out. Key Topics Covered Why minerals are the unsung heroes of mitochondrial energy The connection between mineralization and redox potential How folic acid enhances nutrient absorption and mitochondrial performance The gut-protective power of humic acid and Shilajit The mitochondrial synergy between minerals, CoQ10, and energy production How marine minerals (like Quinton seawater) mirror human plasma Introducing BioMinerals: the most comprehensive mineral elixir for cellular energy A “low and consistent” approach to consistent re-mineralization for long-term vitality Key Quotes from Dr. Mike   “Minerals might sound boring — but they're foundational to energy itself.” “Your mitochondria run on electrons, and minerals are their conductors.” “A mineralized body is an energized body.” “BioMinerals is essentially Powerade on steroids — but without the sugar and with real science.” Episode Timeline   00:00 – Welcome to The Energy Code 00:33 – Why minerals are being added to the Mitochondrial Matrix 03:20 – The overlooked power of minerals for cellular energy 07:15 – What true mineralization looks like 08:08 – The three pillars: Folic, Humic, and Marine minerals 10:16 – Why sourcing and purity matter most 22:12 – Folic acid as a mitochondrial energizer 26:14 – Humic acid and Shilajit for gut and energy 43:10 – Marine minerals and the science of Quinton seawater 61:13 – The birth of BioLight's new BioMinerals 68:45 – How to use it daily for steady re-mineralization 77:17 – Launch discount and how to order Resources & Mentions Healing Is Voltage by Dr. Jerry Tennant The Mitochondriac Manifesto 2 by R.D. Should you really stay in bed after an embryo transfer? For years, many fertility clinics recommended 24–48 hours of strict bed rest, but research now reveals surprising insights: movement may actually support better outcomes. In this episode of The Wholesome Fertility Podcast, I explore what the latest studies say about bed rest versus gentle movement after transfer. I also share holistic, evidence-based practices from both Western research and Traditional Chinese Medicine that can help create the most supportive environment for implantation. You'll learn about the role of acupuncture before and after transfer, nourishing foods and supplements that enhance blood flow and uterine receptivity, and mind-body practices, from meditation to laughter therapy, that ease stress and boost outcomes. Whether you're preparing for an IVF cycle or supporting someone on this journey, this episode is packed with practical, compassionate guidance to empower you with knowledge and ease during this important stage. Key Takeaways: Extended bed rest after embryo transfer may not improve success rates and could reduce them. Gentle movement supports circulation and aligns with TCM principles for reducing stagnation. Acupuncture before and after transfer can significantly enhance implantation success. Warm, nourishing foods like bone broth and circulation-supporting foods like beets are beneficial. Supplements such as CoQ10, vitamin E, omega-3s, and L-arginine may support uterine health (always consult your clinic). Stress management, meditation, time off work, and even laughter therapy can positively impact outcomes. As the leaves change, your health plan should, too. Episode 167 is a solo conversation and Dr. Anthony Balduzzi shares a practical framework for adapting your routines to the realities of fall—colder weather, shorter days, and a busier social calendar. Expect simple moves you can apply immediately to keep progress steady. We cover cold-weather training options and how to build indoor contingencies you'll actually use. You'll also learn why less daylight can impact mood, sleep, and consistency—and what to do about it with smart light exposure and Vitamin D updates. On the nutrition front, Dr. A makes fall eating easy: warming crock-pot meals, seasonal produce swaps (hello, squash and pomegranate), and a straightforward holiday strategy that lets you enjoy the feast without losing momentum. Finally, we zoom out: seasonal planning is about rhythm, not perfection. With a few proactive adjustments, you can stay grounded through fall, glide into winter, and keep stacking wins week after week. Plus—live event invites for 2026 if you want to take the next step in person. Key TakeawaysBuild a seasonal plan: what worked in summer may not work in fall. Create indoor training contingencies (space, equipment, time block). Protect mood/sleep as daylight drops: morning light or full-spectrum lamp. Vitamin D: consider testing and/or increasing D3 + K2 during low-sun months. Use warming, one-pot meals (stews, slow-cooker) for easy adherence. Seasonal swaps: squash, root veg, pomegranate for micronutrients & fiber. Holiday strategy: small protein snack pre-event; protein/veg first; dessert last. Leverage calories: strength train the day after big meals or add a light fast. Guard your circadian rhythm: earlier wind-down as evenings get darker. If travel ramps up, prep a portable routine and default meals. Think in systems (routines + environment) rather than willpower. Consider in-person events for accountability and momentum spikes. Send us a textHow nutrition and medications impact mitochondrial health.Wide release date: October 1, 2025.Episode Summary: Dr. Chris Masterjohn talks about the intricate relationships between nutrition, prescription drugs, and mitochondrial health, discussing how molecules like acetaminophen and SSRIs affect the body beyond their intended purposes, particularly impacting inflammation and energy metabolism. The discussion gets into the broader implications of serotonin outside the brain, the side effects of commonly used medications, and the importance of personalized nutritional strategies to optimize mitochondrial function.About the guest: Chris Masterjohn, PhD holds a doctorate in nutritional sciences and is a co-founder of Mitome, a company focused on mitochondrial testing to optimize cellular energy production.Discussion Points:Acetaminophen & Inflammation: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation by blocking both the initiation and resolution of inflammation, potentially linked to health issues like autism when used during pregnancy.Serotonin's Role Beyond the Brain: Approximately 95% of serotonin is found in the gut, regulating motility, with SSRIs causing side effects like nausea due to increased extracellular serotonin.SSRIs & Mitochondrial Function: SSRIs disrupt serotonin uptake into cells, reducing mitochondrial melatonin production, which impairs the body's ability to handle hypoxic stress and produce ATP efficiently.Statins & Mitochondrial Impact: Statins, used to lower cholesterol, inhibit the mevalonate pathway, affecting not just cholesterol but also CoQ10 and vitamin K2, crucial for mitochondrial function, potentially leading to side effects like myopathy.Mitochondrial Testing with Mitome: Masterjohn's company, Mitome, uses cheek swab tests to measure mitochondrial respiratory chain activity, providing personalized dietary and lifestyle recommendations to optimize cellular energy production.Nutrition & Mental Health: Masterjohn shares his personal experience of severe mental health issues on a vegan diet, which improved dramatically with a nutrient-dense diet rich in organ meats, highlighting individual nutritional needs.Energy Metabolism's Universal Role: Mitochondrial ATP production governs everything from daily energy levels to long-term health, with personalized testing helping identify and address specific bottlenecks.*Not medical advice.Support the showAffiliates: Seed Oil Scout: Find restaurants with seed oil-free options, scan food products to see what they're hiding, with this easy-to-use mobile app. KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + electrolytes formulated for kidney health. Organ Transplant Corruption, Scientific Fraud, and Medical Misinformation in Healthcare

Ask Doctor Dawn

Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 9-25-2025: Dr. Dawn opens with disturbing whistleblower allegations from Patrick Chase about organ transplant corruption. He claims poor patients at Parkland Hospital were systematically denied kidneys that were redirected to wealthier patients at UT Southwestern Medical Center. In 36 documented cases, doctors rejected kidneys as unsuitable for Parkland patients, then transplanted those same organs at the prestigious academic hospital. Chase alleges financial incentives corrupt the entire system, from procurement organizations to waiting list management. She discusses widespread scientific fraud in medical journals, citing research about PLOS journal showing 45 editors facilitated acceptance of fraudulent papers at rates far exceeding chance. These editors represented only 1.3% of reviewers but were responsible for 30% of retracted articles. Paper mills now use AI to generate fake studies with fabricated data, selling authorship to academics seeking publication credits. This undermines evidence-based medicine when treatment guidelines rely on potentially fraudulent research. Dr. Dawn introduces holy basil as a sleep aid beyond melatonin, explaining how its active compound ocimum lowers cortisol and inhibits orexin pathways that promote wakefulness. Unlike melatonin which signals sleep onset, holy basil helps maintain deep sleep by preventing middle-of-night stress spikes. She recommends 500 milligrams of aqueous leaf extract, noting this Ayurvedic herb may be particularly helpful for menopausal women experiencing sleep disruption. She warns about medication-induced osteoporosis, revealing that proton pump inhibitors increase hip fracture risk by 217% after four years of use by impairing calcium absorption and triggering parathyroid hormone release. Antidepressants pose similar risks, with SSRIs increasing fracture risk by 68% and causing women to lose bone 1.6 times faster than non-users. Cancer treatments like androgen deprivation therapy cause severe bone loss, with 81% of long-term users developing osteoporosis. Dr. Dawn challenges cholesterol treatment guidelines, explaining that Quest Labs' recommendation for LDL under 100 contradicts actual medical standards. The Veterans Administration only recommends statins for LDL above 190 plus high cardiovascular risk, or 12% ten-year risk calculated using multiple factors. She criticizes the focus on cosmetic cholesterol numbers while ignoring that high-dose statins increase diabetes risk, which is a greater health threat than elevated LDL alone. A caller describes experiencing severe ear itching followed by facial puffiness after a haircut. Dr. Dawn explains this likely represents a histamine-mediated allergic reaction, possibly triggered by salon products rather than the haircut itself. She advises getting ingredient lists from the salon to identify potential allergens and notes that bilateral symptoms suggest systemic rather than contact allergy. The oral antihistamines the caller took were appropriate treatment. Another caller asks about statin use with LDL of 155, expressing concern about adverse effects. Dr. Dawn recommends calculating ten-year cardiovascular risk rather than focusing solely on LDL numbers. She explains serious statin risks including muscle breakdown and diabetes development, particularly in women. For patients with muscle pain from statins, she suggests CoQ10 supplementation, but discontinuation if symptoms persist to prevent kidney damage from rhabdomyolysis.
