Welcome to the seventh episode of the Coach's Corner Series! Today I'm joined by Coach Lindsay, and we're getting real about what's actually not working in the functional health space, even when practitioners mean well.  We break down five major red flags to watch for, starting with practitioners who don't address nutrition beyond a generic food list. We talk about why using supplements as a bandaid, without digging into the root cause, just becomes another quick fix that doesn't actually heal anything.  Coach Lindsay shares her own health journey, including how infrequent check ins with her provider left her feeling stuck and unsure of her progress.  We also get into why rigid diet plans can backfire by teaching your body to adapt rather than building real metabolic flexibility. And we can't talk about functional health without talking about training, so we cover why using the right training stimulus matters just as much as nutrition and supplements when it comes to hitting your goals.  If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right but still not seeing results, this episode will help you understand why, and what a more complete approach to healing actually looks like. Lindsay brings so much heart and expertise to this conversation, and I know it's going to help so many of you see your own health journey differently.   Time Stamps:   (1:54) What's Not Working Within Functional Health (4:12) More Advanced Nutrition Concepts (8:09) Gut Health (9:02) Questions To Ask Your Practitioner (10:19) Supplements Are Band Aid Fix (15:37) Frequency of Communication (20:20) Flexibility With The Strategy (27:47) Training As A Stimulus ------- Learn more about the Vital Spark Coaching Functional Reset Method.  ------- Click Here to apply for 1-on-1 coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts. ------- Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation.  ------- Click Here for my Free Top 3 Labs training to get to the root of bloating & exhaustion. ------- Click Here to download a Free Hormone Healing Blueprint. ------- Check out our YouTube Channel for more free training. ------- Click Here to read our Client Google Reviews.  ------- Enjoyed the podcast?  Becoming a successful health coach isn't about finding a single supplement or protocol that can fix every problem. It's about empowering clients to make sustainable changes that support their health for life.   When practitioners focus on lifestyle, root causes, accountability, and personalized care, they can help clients create meaningful improvements that go far beyond temporary symptom relief.   On today's episode, Dr. Alexia Soteropoulos shares her journey from conventional medical training to becoming an Integrative Health Practitioner after experiencing firsthand the limitations of a symptom-focused approach to healthcare.   She explains how her own struggles with unexplained health issues led her to discover functional and integrative medicine and ultimately inspired her to combine her medical training with a more holistic approach to helping others.   We discuss why lifestyle habits are the foundation of long-term health, the importance of addressing sleep, stress, nutrition, and circadian health, and how supplements and other therapies can support the body without replacing the fundamentals.   Alexia also shares how functional lab testing can help uncover underlying imbalances, validate the experiences of clients who have been told their symptoms are "normal," and create a more personalized approach to care.   To learn more about how functional health, personalized coaching, and lifestyle changes can help clients address root causes and create lasting results, tune in to today's Integrative #HealthCoachSuccess episode 449.   - - -   Listen or Watch At:  IHP.Coach/449   - - - Dr. Cabral's Book, The Rain Barrel Effect: https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Become an Integrative Health Practitioner: https://integrativehealthpractitioner.org

Zoe has spent 13 years chasing down her migraines — trying 15 to 20 different approaches with zero relief before finally finding what's working.  In today's episode, Lifestyle U coach Zoe joins Lacey and Jensen to share her personal health journey — from childhood stress and lifelong constipation to debilitating migraines that started in high school and worsened dramatically in university. She walks through her path from Western medicine to functional health, the root-cause approaches she's tried (NUCCA chiropractic, fascia release, gut healing, candida protocols), and what she now tells clients about patience, nutrition, and getting to the root of chronic symptoms.   Key Takeaways: Chronic symptoms like constipation and migraines can be deeply tied to stress and emotional patterns, not just diet or genetics. Healing isn't linear — Zoe saw her gut health and skin improve quickly, while her migraines took years and multiple approaches (structural, hormonal, nutritional) before finding relief. Under-eating can stall healing and metabolism; properly fueling the body is often the real turning point, even if it means short-term weight gain.   Chapters: [00:00:00] - Welcome & Introducing Zoe [00:00:31] - How Zoe Became a Lifestyle U Coach [00:02:36] - Childhood Stress & Family Divorce [00:06:39] - First Symptom: Lifelong Constipation [00:10:26] - Migraines Begin in High School [00:14:50] - Getting Into Functional Health [00:19:59] - 15-20 Things Tried With Zero Migraine Relief [00:23:00] - NUCCA Chiropractic & Structural Root Causes [00:27:48] - Fascia Release Therapy Explained [00:36:19] - The Candida Diet & Breaking Sugar Addiction [00:44:52] - Gaining Weight While Healing (Under-Fueling) [00:53:06] - Advice for Anyone Struggling With Migraines   Want to Work With Us? What happens when every medical test comes back "normal," yet your body is telling you something is seriously wrong? In this powerful episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN Practitioner) Betsy Stevenson shares her remarkable journey through years of unexplained neurological symptoms that mimicked mini-strokes, debilitating fatigue, digestive dysfunction, insomnia, hormone imbalance, and overwhelming burnout. Despite extensive medical testing, including MRIs, heart evaluations, CT scans, blood work, and specialist visits, she was repeatedly told everything looked normal. Everything changed when Functional Lab Testing revealed profound HPA Axis dysfunction, extremely low cortisol, disrupted hormone health, impaired detox pathways, and deeper physiological imbalances that conventional testing had overlooked. Betsy explains how discovering Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, a true Health Detective approach, helped uncover the hidden stressors driving her chronic health challenges. Together, Michele and Betsy explore why Root Cause Healing requires more than symptom management. They discuss the importance of Functional Medicine, Functional Diagnostics, personalized healing protocols, metabolic typing, nervous system regulation, lifestyle changes, restorative sleep, stress reduction, and bio-individual nutrition. Betsy also shares how improving Gut Health through comprehensive testing uncovered IBS, colitis, bacterial imbalances, Candida, and digestive dysfunction, allowing her to rebuild health from the inside out. This conversation highlights why Holistic Health means treating the entire body as an interconnected system rather than focusing on isolated symptoms. If you've been struggling with Chronic Fatigue, Brain Fog, Hormone Issues, Digestive Problems, Food Sensitivities, Bloating, Blood Sugar instability, Metabolic Dysfunction, Burnout, or have been told your labs are "normal" despite feeling unwell, this episode offers hope, education, and practical insight into a different path forward. Reed reflects on his transition from environmental law into the wellness field after witnessing firsthand how conventional healthcare often failed to uncover the true causes of chronic health problems. You'll also hear the origin of the FDN philosophy, including the development of the D.R.E.S.S. Protocol (Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Reduction, Supplementation), why practitioners focus on identifying Healing Opportunities rather than diagnosing disease, and how personalized lifestyle strategies support Holistic Health, Functional Wellness, and long-term resilience. The conversation also explores Gut Health, Hormone Health, Functional Medicine, Root Cause Healing, digestive enzymes, HCl, ox bile, immune support, fasting strategies, metabolic flexibility, and the importance of nervous system regulation. Michele and Becca discuss why many women dealing with Chronic Illness, Burnout, bloating, and hormone issues often need less stress, not more exercise, and why personalized care consistently outperforms one-size-fits-all protocols. They also discuss collaborating with medical teams for hormone therapy and peptides while staying within the FDN scope of practice, highlighting how Health Coaching, Practitioner Education, and teamwork create better client outcomes. Is Functional Medicine truly addressing the root causes of Chronic Illness or has it started falling into the same symptom-focused patterns as conventional healthcare? In this episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Michele Scarlet sits down with Reed Davis, founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN), to explore the philosophy, principles, and clinical framework that have helped thousands of practitioners and clients uncover the hidden stressors behind chronic health challenges. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, Reed shares how FDN was created to focus on Root Cause Healing rather than diagnoses, symptoms, or condition-specific protocols. He explains why so many people continue to struggle with Gut Health issues, Hormone Imbalance, Burnout, Brain Fog, Anxiety, fatigue, and other chronic symptoms despite being told their labs are “normal.” Together, Michele and Reed discuss the concept of Metabolic Chaos, the limitations of both conventional and Functional Medicine models, and why lasting Health Transformation requires looking at the whole person rather than isolated symptoms. You'll learn: What Metabolic Chaos really means and why it matters Why hidden stressors are often the true drivers of chronic symptoms How Functional Lab Testing helps identify healing opportunities The FDN D.R.E.S.S. framework: Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Reduction, and Supplementation Why supplements should support not replace the foundations of health Reed's perspective on peptides, biohacking, detox protocols, and wellness trends The role of Natural Healing, Functional Wellness, and Holistic Health in long-term outcomes Why practitioners must focus on healing principles rather than chasing symptoms Reed also shares how FDN evolved into a global Practitioner Training program and why Health Coaches, Functional Health Practitioners, alternative medicine practitioners, and wellness professionals are increasingly seeking a more comprehensive approach to helping clients achieve better outcomes. Whether you're working to improve your own health or exploring a future as an FDN Practitioner, this episode offers a powerful look at the framework, mindset, and healing principles that continue to define Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. If you're passionate about Functional Health, Root Cause Health, Practitioner Education, Functional Diagnostics, and helping people create lasting change, this conversation is one you won't want to miss.

Most FDN trainees believe they need to wait until they graduate before they can start getting clients. According to Jenn Malecha, that's one of the biggest mistakes new practitioners make. In this episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Michele Scarlet sits down with Jenn Malecha to reveal how FDN Practitioners, Health Coaches, and Functional Health Practitioners can begin building a client waitlist long before certification is complete. One of the most common fears among new practitioners is not knowing where their first clients will come from. Jenn breaks down a practical, step-by-step approach to building visibility, creating trust, and generating interest while you're still working through your Practitioner Training. Rather than waiting until graduation, she explains how your own health journey, Functional Lab Testing experience, and personal transformation can become powerful tools for connection and client acquisition. Together, Michele and Jenn discuss how to naturally attract future clients through authentic conversations, referral relationships, community connections, and genuine enthusiasm for the work. They also explain why sales doesn't have to feel pushy or uncomfortable, and how discovery calls can help turn curiosity into committed clients. In this episode, you'll discover: How to build a client waitlist before certification Why most new practitioners wait too long to start marketing themselves How FDN Practitioners can use their own transformation story to build trust The difference between a client waitlist and an email list Simple ways to track potential clients without complicated software How referral partners can help grow your practice Why visibility and connection matter more than perfection The role of discovery calls, enrollment conversations, and client acquisition How to confidently transition from certification into practice Whether you're an FDN Practitioner, Health Coach, wellness entrepreneur, or someone preparing to launch a Functional Health practice, this episode offers actionable business strategies to help you gain momentum, attract your first clients, and build a thriving practice before you even graduate. You'll hear from Master Restorative Health Practitioners Ellen Lovelace, Paige Reagan, and Ishbel Cavaleri, who bring decades of clinical experience and a deep understanding of foundational health. Together with moderator Kristin Whitaker, they'll dive into what makes perimenopause and menopause challenging to assess, practical frameworks for case assessment, key testing strategies, and how non-prescribers fit into collaborative hormone care. In this interview, we discuss:   How perimenopause and menopause symptoms are often amplified by things like blood sugar imbalance, gut dysfunction, inflammation, stress, poor sleep, and more. Why it's critical to address core lifestyle and physiological foundations first. How hormones fluctuate significantly during perimenopause, making symptoms, patterns, and clinical context just as important as test results. How symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, rage, body pain, sleep disruption, and heart palpitations are often dismissed as "normal aging" but deserve attention and support. How non-prescribing practitioners play an important role through education, lifestyle support, and collaboration with qualified medical providers. How to reframe menopause as a normal life transition that can be navigated with empowerment, education, and compassion. Ep. 272 If You Tried Functional Medicine and Still Didn't Get Results — Here's Why

Most women don't realize they're stuck until they've already tried everything that was "supposed" to fix them. In this episode, we unpack one of the most frustrating experiences women face: going beyond conventional medicine, investing in functional medicine, and still feeling stuck. I introduce the two common paths women take: traditional healthcare and functional medicine and explain why both can fail in different ways. You'll hear exactly why being told “everything is normal” leaves so many women without answers, and why even advanced testing and supplement protocols don't always lead to real results. I break down the critical difference between the idea of functional medicine and how it's often delivered in practice. I explain how poor sequencing, incomplete strategies, and lack of real-time support can actually make symptoms worse even when you're following the plan perfectly. If you've ever felt like your body just isn't responding despite your effort, this conversation will hit home. You'll also learn why supplements alone are rarely the solution, and how missing foundational pieces like nutrition, lifestyle, and stress regulation can stall progress completely. I have a powerful “flower and soil” analogy to explain why your body needs the right environment before it can actually heal. Most importantly, this episode reframes the narrative so many women internalize that they are the problem. If you've tried both conventional and functional approaches and still don't feel like yourself, this isn't a failure of your body. It's a gap in the process. By the end, you'll understand exactly what's been missing—and what a truly effective, personalized approach to healing actually requires.   Time Stamps:   (1:17) Two Types of Women Come To Us (3:27) Recent Client Call (8:57) The Premise and Execution of Functional Health (9:34) Doctor Bob Example (10:50) Recent Vital Spark Google Review (12:09) Functional Health Dr. Joe (14:42) The Sequencing Issue (27:47) Working with Vital Spark --------------------- Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching --------------------- Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation.  --------------------- Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program --------------------- Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life! --------------------- Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share! --------------------- Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts? On this episode of the Chardon BIZ Podcast, Dave sits down with Kelly Parker from Functional Health Warriors for a deeper conversation around peptides—and what they actually mean for real people trying to take control of their health. This isn't a surface-level conversation or a trend-driven take. Most people are stuck in a system where they're told to “wait and see,” manage symptoms, or guess their way through supplements and recovery. The result? Frustration, lost momentum, and a body that never quite performs the way it should.Kelly breaks down:• What peptides are in simple terms—and how they work in the body• Where they fit (and don't fit) in a complete health strategy• The difference between chasing quick fixes vs. building a system that actually moves the needle• Who should consider peptides—and who shouldn't• How peptides connect to bigger drivers like sleep, recovery, inflammation, and metabolic healthThis episode ties directly into a bigger idea:If you're only looking at one piece of the puzzle—whether it's training, nutrition, or even peptides—you're missing the point. Real progress comes from coordination. That's where the conversation shifts into how performance therapy, functional medicine, and accountability all work together to help people not just feel better—but actually perform at a higher level in their life.If you've been told “everything looks normal” but you still don't feel like yourself…This episode gives you a clearer path forward.

A recent report from Statistics Canada found that Canadians' functional health is on the decline, especially so for younger folks. Functional health has to do with our ability to perform everyday bodily functions - like see, hear, move, and feel. And according to the report, the decline in functional health is directly related to a lack of emotional health among younger Canadians. Host Catherine Jette speaks to Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti, a physician and professor at the School of Public Health in Alberta to break down the study's findings, what Canadians can do on their own to improve their functional health, and how big of an alarm bell this should raise to Ottawa.
