Is Functional Medicine truly addressing the root causes of Chronic Illness or has it started falling into the same symptom-focused patterns as conventional healthcare? In this episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Michele Scarlet sits down with Reed Davis, founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN), to explore the philosophy, principles, and clinical framework that have helped thousands of practitioners and clients uncover the hidden stressors behind chronic health challenges. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, Reed shares how FDN was created to focus on Root Cause Healing rather than diagnoses, symptoms, or condition-specific protocols. He explains why so many people continue to struggle with Gut Health issues, Hormone Imbalance, Burnout, Brain Fog, Anxiety, fatigue, and other chronic symptoms despite being told their labs are “normal.” Together, Michele and Reed discuss the concept of Metabolic Chaos, the limitations of both conventional and Functional Medicine models, and why lasting Health Transformation requires looking at the whole person rather than isolated symptoms. You'll learn: What Metabolic Chaos really means and why it matters Why hidden stressors are often the true drivers of chronic symptoms How Functional Lab Testing helps identify healing opportunities The FDN D.R.E.S.S. framework: Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Reduction, and Supplementation Why supplements should support not replace the foundations of health Reed's perspective on peptides, biohacking, detox protocols, and wellness trends The role of Natural Healing, Functional Wellness, and Holistic Health in long-term outcomes Why practitioners must focus on healing principles rather than chasing symptoms Reed also shares how FDN evolved into a global Practitioner Training program and why Health Coaches, Functional Health Practitioners, alternative medicine practitioners, and wellness professionals are increasingly seeking a more comprehensive approach to helping clients achieve better outcomes. Whether you're working to improve your own health or exploring a future as an FDN Practitioner, this episode offers a powerful look at the framework, mindset, and healing principles that continue to define Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. If you're passionate about Functional Health, Root Cause Health, Practitioner Education, Functional Diagnostics, and helping people create lasting change, this conversation is one you won't want to miss.
Most FDN trainees believe they need to wait until they graduate before they can start getting clients. According to Jenn Malecha, that's one of the biggest mistakes new practitioners make. In this episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Michele Scarlet sits down with Jenn Malecha to reveal how FDN Practitioners, Health Coaches, and Functional Health Practitioners can begin building a client waitlist long before certification is complete. One of the most common fears among new practitioners is not knowing where their first clients will come from. Jenn breaks down a practical, step-by-step approach to building visibility, creating trust, and generating interest while you're still working through your Practitioner Training. Rather than waiting until graduation, she explains how your own health journey, Functional Lab Testing experience, and personal transformation can become powerful tools for connection and client acquisition. Together, Michele and Jenn discuss how to naturally attract future clients through authentic conversations, referral relationships, community connections, and genuine enthusiasm for the work. They also explain why sales doesn't have to feel pushy or uncomfortable, and how discovery calls can help turn curiosity into committed clients. In this episode, you'll discover: How to build a client waitlist before certification Why most new practitioners wait too long to start marketing themselves How FDN Practitioners can use their own transformation story to build trust The difference between a client waitlist and an email list Simple ways to track potential clients without complicated software How referral partners can help grow your practice Why visibility and connection matter more than perfection The role of discovery calls, enrollment conversations, and client acquisition How to confidently transition from certification into practice Whether you're an FDN Practitioner, Health Coach, wellness entrepreneur, or someone preparing to launch a Functional Health practice, this episode offers actionable business strategies to help you gain momentum, attract your first clients, and build a thriving practice before you even graduate. How often do you factor travel into your clinical assessment? In this episode of the IRH Clinician's Corner, Margaret Floyd Barry sits down with Dr. Monisha Bhanote, a world-renowned expert in integrative longevity medicine. In today's conversation, we uncover a surprisingly critical topic for functional health practitioners: how to support clients during travel. Inside this episode, we explore: Why travel can quietly derail even the best clinical protocols The five biological pathways most impacted when clients leave home What really happens to the gut during air travel How disrupted sleep, stress, and time zone changes affect immunity and recovery Simple interventions that can dramatically improve travel resilience The overlooked conversation every practitioner should be having with their clients before they travel The Clinician's Corner is brought to you by the Institute of Restorative Health. In this episode of the IRH Clinician's Corner, we're presenting a special panel discussion from our recent Clinical Success Showcase event in January. With perimenopause and menopause becoming increasingly talked about—both in the clinic and in popular media—we've gathered a team of expert practitioners to share their best strategies for supporting women through these complex hormonal transitions. You'll hear from Master Restorative Health Practitioners Ellen Lovelace, Paige Reagan, and Ishbel Cavaleri, who bring decades of clinical experience and a deep understanding of foundational health. Together with moderator Kristin Whitaker, they'll dive into what makes perimenopause and menopause challenging to assess, practical frameworks for case assessment, key testing strategies, and how non-prescribers fit into collaborative hormone care. In this interview, we discuss: How perimenopause and menopause symptoms are often amplified by things like blood sugar imbalance, gut dysfunction, inflammation, stress, poor sleep, and more. Why it's critical to address core lifestyle and physiological foundations first. How hormones fluctuate significantly during perimenopause, making symptoms, patterns, and clinical context just as important as test results. How symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, rage, body pain, sleep disruption, and heart palpitations are often dismissed as "normal aging" but deserve attention and support. How non-prescribing practitioners play an important role through education, lifestyle support, and collaboration with qualified medical providers. How to reframe menopause as a normal life transition that can be navigated with empowerment, education, and compassion. Healing from the Inside Out: Our 30-Day Gut Reset Protocol That Transforms Energy, Digestion & HormonesAt Thrive Chiropractic & Functional Health in Branson, Missouri, we've seen it time and again: people struggling with bloating, fatigue, brain fog, stubborn weight, joint pain, hormone imbalances, and even autoimmune flares — all while being told: “everything looks normal.”The common thread? Gut dysfunction.Your gut is the foundation of your health. When it's inflamed or imbalanced, it affects everything — immunity, energy, mood, hormones, and more. The good news? You can start healing it in as little as 30 days with the right protocol. In this in-depth guide, we're sharing the exact 30-Day Gut Reset Protocol we use with patients in our functional medicine programs. It's practical, phased, and designed for real life — not perfection.70–80% of your immune system lives in your gut. When the microbiome is out of balance (dysbiosis) or the intestinal lining becomes “leaky,” it triggers systemic inflammation that shows up as:Chronic bloating, gas, or irregular bowelsFatigue and brain fogHormone issues (thyroid, estrogen dominance, perimenopause symptoms)Joint pain and skin problemsFood sensitivities and cravingsMood swings or anxietyA targeted 30-day reset removes irritants, repairs the lining, rebalances bacteria, and rebuilds resilience — often leading to noticeable improvements in energy, digestion, and overall vitality. We follow a proven functional medicine approach (often called the 4R or 5R protocol) tailored to busy women and families in the Branson area.Week 1 – Reset & RemoveFocus on simplicity. Cook most meals at home. Drink plenty of filtered water (aim for half your body weight in ounces). Try a 12-hour overnight fast (finish dinner by 7 pm, breakfast after 7 am).Week 2 – Replace & Begin ReinoculatingAdd digestive support and introduce 1–2 new fermented foods. Increase vegetable variety.Week 3 – Deep ReinoculationRamp up prebiotic fibers and diversity (aim for 20–30 different plants per week). Notice energy and mood improvements.Week 4 – Repair & ReintegrateEmphasize repair nutrients. Slowly test reintroducing eliminated foods (one at a time, every 3 days) while tracking symptoms.Breakfast: Bone broth protein smoothie with spinach, berries, and flaxseed.Lunch: Grilled chicken or salmon salad with mixed greens, avocado, olive oil, and fermented veggies.Dinner: Baked sweet potato, steamed broccoli, wild-caught fish or grass-fed beef, and sauerkraut.Snacks (if needed): Handful of walnuts, celery with almond butter, or herbal tea.Daily movement (walks, gentle yoga).Stress management — even 5 minutes of box breathing.Prioritize sleep.Chiropractic + nervous system support (huge for gut motility and vagus nerve). This protocol is powerful on its own, but the best results come with personalized testing (gut microbiome, food sensitivities, zonulin for leaky gut, etc.). Most women don't realize they're stuck until they've already tried everything that was "supposed" to fix them. In this episode, we unpack one of the most frustrating experiences women face: going beyond conventional medicine, investing in functional medicine, and still feeling stuck. I introduce the two common paths women take: traditional healthcare and functional medicine and explain why both can fail in different ways. You'll hear exactly why being told “everything is normal” leaves so many women without answers, and why even advanced testing and supplement protocols don't always lead to real results. I break down the critical difference between the idea of functional medicine and how it's often delivered in practice. I explain how poor sequencing, incomplete strategies, and lack of real-time support can actually make symptoms worse even when you're following the plan perfectly. If you've ever felt like your body just isn't responding despite your effort, this conversation will hit home. You'll also learn why supplements alone are rarely the solution, and how missing foundational pieces like nutrition, lifestyle, and stress regulation can stall progress completely. I have a powerful “flower and soil” analogy to explain why your body needs the right environment before it can actually heal. Most importantly, this episode reframes the narrative so many women internalize that they are the problem. If you've tried both conventional and functional approaches and still don't feel like yourself, this isn't a failure of your body. It's a gap in the process. By the end, you'll understand exactly what's been missing—and what a truly effective, personalized approach to healing actually requires. On this episode of the Chardon BIZ Podcast, Dave sits down with Kelly Parker from Functional Health Warriors for a deeper conversation around peptides—and what they actually mean for real people trying to take control of their health. This isn't a surface-level conversation or a trend-driven take. Most people are stuck in a system where they're told to “wait and see,” manage symptoms, or guess their way through supplements and recovery. The result? Frustration, lost momentum, and a body that never quite performs the way it should.Kelly breaks down:• What peptides are in simple terms—and how they work in the body• Where they fit (and don't fit) in a complete health strategy• The difference between chasing quick fixes vs. building a system that actually moves the needle• Who should consider peptides—and who shouldn't• How peptides connect to bigger drivers like sleep, recovery, inflammation, and metabolic healthThis episode ties directly into a bigger idea:If you're only looking at one piece of the puzzle—whether it's training, nutrition, or even peptides—you're missing the point. Real progress comes from coordination. That's where the conversation shifts into how performance therapy, functional medicine, and accountability all work together to help people not just feel better—but actually perform at a higher level in their life.If you've been told “everything looks normal” but you still don't feel like yourself…This episode gives you a clearer path forward.

A recent report from Statistics Canada found that Canadians' functional health is on the decline, especially so for younger folks. Functional health has to do with our ability to perform everyday bodily functions - like see, hear, move, and feel. And according to the report, the decline in functional health is directly related to a lack of emotional health among younger Canadians. Host Catherine Jette speaks to Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti, a physician and professor at the School of Public Health in Alberta to break down the study's findings, what Canadians can do on their own to improve their functional health, and how big of an alarm bell this should raise to Ottawa. Send a textMost people come to my work when they've hit an impasse. They've tried the diets. The protocols. The lab tests. The supplement stacks. They've run parasite cleanses, gut protocols, detoxes, hormone panels, food sensitivity tests — sometimes for years. And while pieces helped, nothing rebuilt their body in a way that felt stable or sustainable. In this episode, I'm naming what I see happening underneath that cycle. Many people aren't failing at healing. They're trying to force coherence without first restoring capacity. When we chase symptoms, isolate labels like SIBO, MCAS, histamine intolerance, adrenal fatigue, or hormone imbalance, and layer interventions onto an already overwhelmed system, the body adapts — until it can't.Your gut, nervous system, immune system, fascia, hormones, and mineral terrain don't operate as separate departments. They adapt together. And when we treat one piece without reorganizing the terrain underneath it, nothing holds.Real healing requires a parasympathetic pace.Your gut lining does not regenerate in fight-or-flight. Tight junctions don't seal under chronic stress. Missing keystone bacteria don't recolonize in a system that feels unsafe. Minerals don't rebalance when your nervous system is braced. In this episode, I walk through:Why elimination diets often narrow resilience instead of restoring itWhy protocol cycling creates fragmentationWhat Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) actually reveals about long-term stress patternsWhy gut remodeling only happens in contextWhy minerals are foundational to nervous system and microbiome repairWhat mentorship-based healing looks like instead of hand-off protocolsI share how I structure my Minerals & Microbes program — not as a quick fix, but as paced terrain work that builds capacity over time. This episode is for you if:You feel like you've “done everything” and are still stuckYou're burned out on protocolsYou want to rebuild instead of manageYou're ready for coherence, not more intensityHealing isn't about surrendering authority. It's about reclaiming it — with guidance. If this conversation brings relief instead of urgency, you're probably in the right place. You can learn more about working with me through my Minerals & Microbes program on my website.Support the show Support the podcast Mineral Foundations Course HERE Minerals & Microbes package HERE Rewilded Wellness program HERE Join my newsletter HERE If you are interested in becoming a client and have questions, reach out by emailing me: lydiajoyme@gmail.com Find me on Instagram : @ Lydiajoy.me
Send us a textWhat if sleep was the most powerful hormone-balancing tool you had—and you didn't need another supplement to access it?In this episode, Gina and Kristin unpack why sleep isn't optional when it comes to hormone health—it's foundational medicine. If you're eating well, exercising, and “doing all the right things” but still struggling with fatigue, stubborn weight, cravings, PMS, or cycle issues, this conversation is for you.We break down the science behind the hormone–sleep connection in a way that actually makes sense, including how poor sleep impacts cortisol, insulin, melatonin, and your hunger hormones. You'll also hear common client patterns we see when sleep is off—like waking between 2–4 a.m., feeling wired but tired, or plateauing despite your best efforts. Most importantly, we reframe sleep as an intentional healing tool, not just more hours in bed. You'll learn why quality matters more than quantity, how circadian rhythm drives hormone balance, and why better sleep starts first thing in the morning—not at bedtime. We wrap with practical, hormone-supportive sleep tips you can start using tonight, plus a simple reflection to help you take action without overwhelm.✨ In this episode, we cover:Why sleep is active hormone therapyHow poor sleep disrupts cortisol, insulin, and appetite regulationSigns your hormones are being impacted by sleep (even if you get 8 hours)The role of circadian rhythm in cycle health, thyroid function, and fertilitySimple shifts that can create big hormonal changes

There is something incredibly liberating that happens when you realize your genes are not a life sentence. We have all been told that if a gene runs in your family, you're destined to live out the same story. Celiac. MTHFR. Hashimoto's. Breast cancer genes. We're taught to brace ourselves instead of learning how to influence the environment those genes live in. When the gut is overwhelmed, the immune system stays in a reactive state, and in that environment certain genes become more expressive than they would in a balanced body. And as the gut heals and the immune system steadies, those expressions often soften again. When we move through life in the energy of fearing our bodies, or resenting the parts of us that feel complicated or confusing, it creates a disconnect. Not just within us, but within our children. They feel it. They feel the way we brace around certain symptoms. They feel the heaviness we carry when we believe something is wrong with us, or wrong with them. Our energy teaches them what to believe about their own bodies, the world around them, and what is possible or impossible. If your child has a gene variant that society labels as undesirable, the most healing thing you can offer them is not fear. It's acceptance. It's steadiness. It's the belief that their body is not broken. Because when you hold that belief, they learn to hold it too.Your body is not something you need to fear. Your child's body is not something to fix. Every single part of you was designed on purpose. Every one of your gene variants is a page in your story. And when certain genes express, it is an invitation. It is your body communicating with you and bringing you back into alignment so you can show up in your life as the best version of you.. It is your body asking you to come closer, not pull away. When you view your body through this lens, everything shifts. You stop battling yourself. You stop bracing for what might happen. You begin partnering with your body instead of fearing it. And this is where your deepest power lives. In relationship. In understanding. In the environment you create on the inside.Your genes respond to you. They respond to the way you live, the way you nourish yourself, the way you support your gut and your nervous system, the way you speak to yourself, the way you choose to show up every day. And the more safety and nourishment you bring into your life, the more your genes settle into the expression that serves you. This is the freedom of gene expression. This is the empowerment that no lab report can ever take away from you. Thanks for listening! Are you struggling with menopausal weight gain, endless food cravings, or feeling like your body just isn't working the way it used to? You're not alone. In this groundbreaking episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Dr. Mindy Pelz — leading expert in women's health, hormone science, and fasting, and author of Age Like a Girl — exposes the truth about why women age differently, what's really behind weight gain during menopause, and how to train your fat-burning metabolism to finally work with you, not against you. She reveals why everyone should care about women and how they age (it affects more than just women's health!), the real causes of menopausal weight gain and how it differs from regular weight gain (and yes, it's fixable!), how to train your metabolic system to burn fat efficiently (even after 40!), the mental health and chronic disease benefits of fasting, (especially for women in menopause), and the dangers of the “Make America Healthy Again” movement (what they're getting wrong about your health!). Dr. Mindy Pelz also breaks down: - Fasting 101: When to fast, for how long, & how to break your fast safely - The truth about detoxing: Common toxin buildups & how to activate your natural detox pathways - Proven solutions to reverse menopausal weight gain naturally - The surprising reason older men also gain weight - How much protein & fiber you really need - Why fasting is not starving, and how to do it safely for your body type - The shocking origins of the “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” myth - Who should and shouldn't fast, and why it isn't isn't a one-size-fits-all approach - How processed foods are destroying your hormones (and why they're even worse for women) - The real reason men lose weight faster than women, and how to level the playing field - Why we're living in the most toxic time in human history, and what you can do to protect yourself - How fasting can ease menopause symptoms like hot flashes & brain fog - Why endometriosis diagnoses are rising - 3 things everyone should add to their diet right now for longevity & energy - The powerful role women are designed for after menopause (your brain actually rewires itself during this time!) - The real truth about hormone replacement therapy (HRT): Who should consider it, its risks, and why it only works with key lifestyle changes - How to finally beat food cravings once and for all, without feeling deprived - Why most people are getting aging completely wrong...and how to truly age like a girl! Whether you're in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond, this is the information that can literally change how you age, think, and feel. In this episode, I'm joined by Austin Stout, also known as @austinst8 on Instagram an experienced online coach with a strong background in bodybuilding, body recomposition, functional health, and mentoring. We dive into the world of functional health and discuss how this space, while valuable, can sometimes take things too far — leaving people feeling like they're broken or that something is always “wrong” with their body. Austin and I unpack why many people are skipping over the fundamentals and how mastering the basics often leads to better progress than chasing every lab marker or supplement trend. We also touch on how data collection — from tracking metrics to running excessive lab work — can actually backfire when it becomes obsessive and causes more stress than benefit. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by all the “functional” advice online, this episode will help you zoom out, simplify, and refocus on what truly matters for your health and results.Follow Austin on Instagram: @austinst8Follow me on Instagram: @NicoleFerrierFitnessLearn more about coaching at www.nicoleferrierfitness.com
Sometimes, advocating for your own health can save your life. In this inspiring conversation of HEAL with Kelly, I sit down with my good friend Cameron Mathison, Emmy-nominated actor, television host, and wellness advocate to talk about the journey that transformed not just his body, but his entire life. You may know Cameron from General Hospital, All My Children, or as a beloved host on Entertainment Tonight and Hallmark's Home & Family, but behind the spotlight was a decade-long struggle with unexplained health issues that eventually led to a shocking diagnosis: kidney cancer. Cameron shares how this wake-up call became a powerful turning point, guiding him away from surface-level “health” and toward a deeper, more holistic approach rooted in functional medicine, mindfulness, and self-awareness. Today, Cameron feels and looks stronger and more vibrant than ever and he's helping others do the same through Health360, a functional health coaching platform that empowers people to reset their bodies, optimize their energy, and truly thrive. We explore what it really means to take ownership of your health, why prevention is the most powerful medicine, and how practices like meditation and emotional awareness can be just as healing as food or fitness. Cameron's story is a reminder that true healing begins when you start listening to your body and that it's never too late to choose a new path. Key Moments You'll Love ✨:
