E396 – "Inner Voice: A Heartfelt Chat with Dr. Foojan Zeine." In this episode, Dr. Foojan Zeine chats with Bob Kaplan, the author of GRAPPLING: Leaders Striving To Improve, a series of short stories that bring executive coaching to life. His unique style is entertaining and offers a novel way of learning about leadership and self-improvement. The book is based on his decades of experience consulting CEOs and other senior leaders, including founders. He is the founder and president of his own leadership consulting firm, Kaplan DeVries. He invented a 360 survey, the Leadership Versatility Index, that earned a patent for its unique way of assessing leaders. He and his colleagues also take a unique approach to delivering feedback. They place unusually heavy emphasis on positive feedback to boost the leader's confidence. His last book was Fear Your Strengths: What You're Best Could Be Your Biggest Problem. An honorary senior fellow at the Center for Creative Leadership, he has a B.A. and Ph.D. from Yale University. He lives in New York City with his wife, Becky. He explained that the book is a collection of stories exploring leadership's mental aspects, aiming to help senior managers overcome their limitations and become better leaders. Dr. agreed with Bob's approach, emphasizing the importance of understanding and shifting internal belief systems to achieve desired results. Bob and Dr. discussed strategies for effective coaching and management. Bob shared a personal anecdote about helping a head of engineering let go of an underperforming employee, emphasizing the importance of being direct and forceful. Dr. discussed her experiences as a therapist and mentor, noting that transitioning from a supportive to a forceful role could be challenging. The conversation also touched on the importance of establishing a structured system for accountability and how it can create a sense of responsibility within a team. Additionally, Bob shared his experience with an individual who failed to change despite efforts to help him and how changing the approach to build a tighter team around the person was more effective. Bob and Dr. discussed the importance of self-awareness and introspection for individuals, particularly those in leadership roles. They agreed that getting objective feedback from others can help identify one's strengths and weaknesses and that this outside perspective can guide personal growth. They also emphasized the need for individuals to recognize and address their biases, fears, and beliefs that might hinder their performance. Bob shared his personal experiences of balancing his need for achievement with the importance of relationships in the workplace. Bob and Dr. discussed balancing opposing forces or dualities in leadership. Bob shared his leadership model, which consists of two main dualities: strategic vs operational planning and forceful vs enabling. He mentioned the evaluation tool he developed, which uses a rating scale to assess individuals' tendencies to do too much or too little of each aspect. They also touched on the concept of "strength overdone" and the potential adverse effects of maximizing certain qualities. Dr. noted the potential for internal or external "blocks" that hinder progress and suggested exploring these to facilitate improvement. Bob discussed the importance of positive feedback in boosting a person's confidence, especially for those in challenging jobs. He highlighted that while some leaders may struggle to accept high regard, others can benefit from it. Dr. shared their experience of leaders focusing on areas they need to improve rather than recognizing their strengths. They also touched on the human tendency to seek change and acceptance, making it difficult for people to accept their strengths. Bob stressed the need to understand what blocks the uptake of positive feedback and suggested that this could be an area for further exploration. Remember to Subscribe, Listen, Review, and Share! E393 – "Inner Voice: A Heartfelt Chat with Dr. Foojan Zeine." In this episode, Dr. Foojan Zeine chats with Dr. Peter Kristiansen; in the last thirty years, he has worked as a doctor, personal advisor, and conflict resolution mediator. Through his work, he realized that our Performance and Perfection Obsessed Culture is the most pervasive-yet often hidden—villain in our lives. He wrote The Ultimate Life Skill to help people break free from the existing paradigm and shift towards a new one, allowing them to experience a more fulfilling life. TheUltimateLifeSkill.com # 1 on the 20 Best California Mental Health Podcasts list by FeedSpot. https://podcasts.feedspot.com/california_mental_health_podcasts/  Check out my website: www.FoojanZeine.com, www.AwarenessIntegration.com, www.Foojan.com Summary Dr. Peter Christiansen, a chiropractor from Denmark, discussed his journey from treating physical pain to exploring the emotional and thought processes that affect people's lives. He realized that people often seek happiness through external means, but true fulfillment comes from within. Dr. Peter discovered that the brain plays a significant role in controlling our actions and emotions, often resorting to unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol, sugar, or smoking. He emphasized the importance of becoming aware of these habits and learning to tolerate the emotional discomfort they cause to make wise choices and lead a more authentic life. This realization led him to write his book, "The Ultimate Life Skills," which aims to help people understand and overcome their emotional struggles. They discussed the role of emotions and the nervous system in shaping human behavior. People often struggle with intense emotions and resort to coping mechanisms such as alcohol, drugs, or excessive work to avoid them. Emphasized the importance of learning to tolerate and manage emotions, which can lead to a more authentic and honest life. They discussed the concept of self-control and forgiveness, emphasizing that people are not in control of their actions due to various factors such as addiction or bad habits. He suggested that instead of punishing oneself, one should focus on gaining control over their actions. Peter also shared his personal experience with sugar addiction and how he learned to tolerate cravings to make better choices. Dr. Peter discusses the importance of understanding and working with the body's natural responses to triggers and emotions. He suggests that instead of controlling external factors, we should focus on quieting down and being present with our bodily sensations. By tolerating and observing uncomfortable emotions, the body can naturally process and release them. This approach allows for more precise decision-making, as emotional reactions influence the brain's higher functions less. The doctor confirms this interpretation, adding that being more conscious of bodily responses can lead to better information processing and wiser choices. He suggested that all humans are traumatized due to their upbringing and the constant observation of others' emotions and actions. He emphasized that the source of unwise acting is often a misinterpretation of bodily sensations. Dr. Peter discussed the concept of willpower and its relationship with the body's response to perceived danger. He explained that the body's nervous system reacts to perceived danger, cutting off the brain's rational part and leading to impulsive behavior, and suggested that this process involves noticing when one is out of control, being aware of it, and then having the willpower to make the right choices. Emphasized the need to stop and notice when engaging in unwanted behaviors and to pause for as long as desired before resuming the original action. He shared his personal experience of overcoming addiction and stress through this method and highlighted the benefits of a more conscious and present life. The conversation concluded with a call to practice self-love and support rather than supporting lack. Dr. and Tama discussed the importance of self-awareness and the impact of negative self-talk. Dr. shared her personal experience of journaling and noticing the high ratio of negativity in her life despite achieving her goals. Tama agreed and emphasized the need to pay attention to the tone of the inner voice. They also touched upon trusting oneself and the confusion that can arise from conflicting messages within oneself. Tama suggested that the key to finding the voice to trust is to listen to the tone and be mindful of the content of the inner dialogue. Tama emphasized the importance of trusting one's instincts and making decisions based on love and inspiration rather than external expectations or structures. She suggested that people focus on what they love and take inspired steps rather than trying to fit into predetermined structures. Dr. echoed this sentiment, noting that successful people often discover their way rather than follow external structures.

Dr. Zeine expressed her appreciation for the book and shared her experiences with pursuing happiness, highlighting how societal norms and personal expectations can influence one's understanding of happiness. Dr. and Shawn discussed the concepts of happiness and meaning, drawing on their shared understanding of human emotions and experiences. Both agreed that meaningful connections are crucial for maintaining a healthy baseline of happiness. Dr. discussed the importance of finding meaning in life and being authentic. Shawn also highlighted the importance of being vulnerable and open to feedback, as it allows for personal growth and development. They emphasized the importance of accepting the ups and downs of life and focusing on the present moment. Cody explained the book's cover, which was drawn by a friend, and its connection to the story of Carl Jung's quest for his myth. He also mentioned Jaime D'Angelo, a character in the book, who discovered his spiritual connection through practicing with native Americans and using psychedelic mushrooms. Dr. shared his experiences with dream work and ayahuasca trips, noting the recurring ancient symbols he encountered. Dr. and Cody discussed the connection between psychology and spirituality, with a focus on the role of the subconscious and the concept of the shadow. Cody emphasized the importance of making the darkness conscious in the process of spiritual awakening, drawing on Carl Jung's ideas. They also discussed the symbolism of dreams and the collective myth, and how these relate to the human psyche. The conversation centered around Cody's book, "The Shadow of a Figure of Light," which explores the balance between spirituality and religion, and the acceptance of one's darkness as a source of spiritual vitality. Dr. and Cody discussed the commonalities between various therapeutic approaches, including psychotherapy, dream work, psychedelic treatments, and spirituality. They agreed that the first step in healing is to confront and accept the darkness within oneself, whether it's related to trauma, addiction, or other personal issues. Dr. emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and love for all parts of oneself, while Cody shared his personal experience as an alcoholic and drug addict, noting the parallels between Carl Jung's ideas and the 12-step program. Both agreed that the transformation experienced by addicts through the 12 steps serves as a prototype for psychological transformation in general. Cody discussed his perspective on alcoholism, drawing from Carl Jung's letter to Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. He suggested that alcoholism is a universal thirst for wholeness or union with God and that alcoholics are a prototype of this struggle. Cody also explored the concept of the archetype of the alcoholic, which he found had not been extensively written about. He emphasized the transformative nature of alcoholism, likening it to the prime material in alchemy. Cody highlighted the importance of accepting our murkiness and recognizing that everyone is in the same boat, rather than striving for perfection. Dr. discussed their personal experience with addiction, comparing it to other behaviors and substances. They shared their 30-year work in addiction recovery and opened an outpatient program. Dr. emphasized that addiction stems from a deep-seated unease and anxiety, and people often use substances or behaviors to cope. They noted that falling in love or finding a spiritual connection can be key to recovery, as these connections can guide individuals toward self-discovery and oneness. Dr. also highlighted the importance of self-reflection and daily work in managing addiction. Dr. and Cody discussed the concept of compulsion and its role in human life. Dr. discussed the concept of addiction and the delusion that people often fall into. He explained that people get hooked on a path that promises them a connection and wholeness, but this path is a path of destruction. The association between the addictive behavior and the desired connection is not accurate, leading people to believe that one more use will bring them closer to their goal. Dr. also mentioned that even people who have been sober for a long time can still have this delusion, believing that they can have one more time of using before they die.

Alan is joined once again by the one and only Dr. Jason Smithson. We've often compared how dentistry is delivered differently between the United States and the UK, but today we compare how dental hygiene is delivered differently.  Summary: Dr. Alan Mead and Dr. Jason Smithson discuss the stark differences in how dental hygiene is approached in the United States versus the UK. They explore the reasons behind these differences, including insurance models, historical practices, and the perceived value of hygiene appointments by patients. The conversation also touches upon the role of diagnosis, consent, and duty of care in dental treatment. Key Discussion Points: Jason's Current Activities: Dr. Smithson discusses his teaching schedule at Spear Education, including new courses on aging teeth and other advanced restorative techniques. He also mentions his work in Australia and Europe. The Hygienist Shortage: Alan describes his difficulty in finding a hygienist due to increased pay demands and a shrinking pool of candidates. This leads into the core discussion of the episode. US vs. UK Hygiene Models: US: Hygienists are often the primary point of contact for patients, with a focus on regular cleanings regardless of individual needs and disease. The system is largely insurance-driven. Patients often prioritize the cleaning over the dentist's exam. UK: Dentists assess patients first, determining recall intervals based on risk factors (caries, periodontal disease, wear). Hygienist appointments are prescribed by the dentist and are therapy-focused (e.g., scaling and root planing for periodontal disease). Healthy patients may not see a hygienist at all. Value Perception: Jason argues that the US system can make hygiene seem like a cosmetic procedure, diminishing its perceived value, especially for healthy patients. The UK model ties hygiene to specific therapeutic needs, increasing its perceived value. Insurance and Payment Models: The discussion touches on the differences between NHS (government-funded) and private dental care in the UK, as well as the impact of insurance on treatment decisions in the US. The UK has a mixed system, while Dr. Smithson's practice is entirely fee-for-service. Direct Access Hygiene (UK): In the UK, patients can directly access hygienists without a dentist's referral. This is uncommon in the US. Diagnosis and Consent: Jason highlights the importance of explicit diagnosis before treatment, emphasizing that informed consent cannot be obtained without a diagnosis. He suggests that the US system sometimes relies on implicit diagnoses. Duty of Care: Jason explains the concept of duty of care in the UK, stating that dentists assume responsibility for a patient's care once treatment begins. This raises questions about the US system and potential legal implications. Efficiency and Multitasking: The conversation explores the inefficiency of jumping between patients and procedures, including hygiene checks during restorative work. Jason cites research on the negative impact of multitasking on quality and productivity. Patient Expectations: The discussion acknowledges that US patients have been conditioned to expect regular cleanings, even when not clinically necessary. This creates a challenge for dentists who might want to shift to a more therapy-focused model. In this episode, Dr. Foojan Zeine chats with Dr. Brian Licuanan an author, speaker, and board-certified psychologist practicing in Southern California. He specializes in insomnia and family crisis interventions as well as has extensive experience working with highly acute clients struggling with substance abuse disorders and mental health conditions. Dr. Licuanan is passionate about educating the public on mental health and substance addiction as he has appeared on The Doctors show on CBS, Dr. Drew Midday Live, Good Day LA along with several podcasts, and has authored several articles. Additionally, his book, "How to Get Your Resisting Loved One into Treatment: A Step-by-Step Guide for Mental Health and/or Addiction Crisis" is a strategy guide to help family members with loved ones refusing help or treatment. www.drbrianlicuanan.com # 1 on the 20 Best California Mental Health Podcasts list by FeedSpot. https://podcasts.feedspot.com/california_mental_health_podcasts Check out my website: www.FoojanZeine.com, www.AwarenessIntegration.com, www.Foojan.com Summary Dr. Foojan and Dr. Licuanan discussed the importance of Dr. Licuanan's book, "How to Get Your Resisting Loved One into Treatment," which addresses the challenges families face when dealing with a loved one's addiction or mental health issues. Dr. Foojan and Dr. Licuanan discussed the challenges families face when dealing with addiction. They highlighted the confusion and guilt that can arise from different approaches to addiction, such as tough love or being overly nice. Dr. Foojan noted that addiction can be functional or non-functional, affecting the family's dynamics. Dr. Licuanan emphasized the importance of a balanced approach, which he termed "assertive love" or "respectful boundaries." He warned against the dangers of harsh, unconditional love, which could lead to hopelessness and potentially tragic outcomes. Dr. Foojan and Dr. Licuanan discussed the importance of understanding addiction and its impact on individuals and their families. Dr. Foojan emphasized the need for individuals struggling with addiction to recognize their behavior's impact on others and take responsibility for their actions. Dr. Licuanan agreed, noting that interventions can be effective when done appropriately and focusing on the family unit rather than just the individual. He also highlighted the importance of recognizing each family member's role and responsibility in perpetuating the addiction. Both agreed on the necessity of educating families about addiction before engaging in conversations about it. Dr. Licuanan discussed the concept of disease, emphasizing that there is no single definition and it can encompass various aspects of life, including mental health and substance use disorders. He suggested that everyone has their version of the disease, which can impact their lives. He emphasized the importance of operationally defining terms to ensure everyone is on the same page, particularly in group therapy settings. He highlighted the need to identify and address the actual problems within a family, not just focusing on the individual causing the most harm. Dr. Licuanan also discussed the concept of a 'coalition' or support system, which includes a primary and secondary support system. He stressed the importance of carefully selecting members of the primary support system to avoid fractures in relationships and a unified vision. Dr. Licuanan and Dr. Foojan discussed the importance of family involvement in the treatment process for individuals struggling with addiction. They emphasized the need for careful selection of family members to be involved in the initial phases of the process, as not all family members may be suitable or willing to support the individual throughout the treatment journey. They also highlighted the importance of creating a safe environment for family members to share their experiences and concerns, and to collaborate in supporting the individual in need of treatment. Dr. Foojan asked about strategies to manage resistance from the individual or the family, to which Dr. Licuanan responded by stressing the importance of upfront knowledge and understanding of addiction for family members. Dr. Licuanan discussed the challenges families face when dealing with loved ones struggling with addiction or mental health issues. He emphasized the role of guilt and fear in perpetuating the disease and the importance of setting boundaries and limits. Dr. Licuanan also highlighted the three inevitable consequences of untreated mental health or addiction: jail, institutionalization, or death. He advised families to accept these consequences and focus on what they can control, such as providing options and support. Dr. Foojan then asked about a step-by-step plan for getting a resisting loved one into treatment, to which Dr. Licuanan responded by emphasizing the importance of recognizing what one can and cannot control, and accepting the inevitable consequences of inaction. Dr. Foojan and Dr. Licuanan discussed the importance of calling the police in situations where a loved one is in imminent danger of harming themselves or others. Dr. Licuanan emphasized that law enforcement is increasingly receiving mental health education, which can lead to a more appropriate response. He advised calling 911 and providing as much information as possible about the situation, including any untreated mental health conditions or substance abuse. Dr. Licuanan also stressed the importance of hope and the power of family members to make changes in their loved ones' lives.

Philippians 4:8-9 CEB From now on, brothers and sisters, if anything is excellent and if anything is admirable, focus your thoughts on these things: all that is true, all that is holy, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is lovely, and all that is worthy of praise. 9 Practice these things: whatever you learned, received, heard, or saw in us. The God of peace will be with you.   SUMMARY   Dr. Bryan Hudson's talk for January 1, "A Resolution for 2025," encourages people to set resolutions that align with God's will, rather than relying on their own strength. He highlights a study showing that most New Year's resolutions fail by the second week of January, mainly because they are made in human strength. Hudson stresses the importance of resolutions rooted in God's power, which brings grace, motivation, and strength. He focuses on Philippians 4:8-9, urging individuals to focus on things that are excellent, admirable, true, holy, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise. Hudson suggests that making decisions based on these virtues will lead to better outcomes. He encourages practicing solitude and prayer for personal growth and reflection. The sermon also emphasizes the importance of exemplars—role models who demonstrate the qualities to aim for. Hudson shares practical advice like "habit stacking," which involves building small, consistent habits to create lasting change. Ultimately, Hudson calls for a resolution to rely on God's wisdom and strength, rather than one's own, and to focus on what is excellent and admirable. He encourages everyone to lean into God's guidance for personal and spiritual growth in the coming year.

E382 – "Inner Voice: A Heartfelt Chat with Dr. Foojan Zeine." In this episode, Dr. Foojan Zeine chats with Dr. Ramin (Ron) Najafi, a chemist and entrepreneur committed to environmental advocacy. He is Emery Pharma's Founder, President, and CEO, a contract research organization focused on pharmaceutical development. Dr. Najafi invented the Ecological Funnel (ECO Funnel) and founded CP Lab Safety, which distributes over 200,000+ lab safety products worldwide, enhancing compliance with safety standards. In addition to Emery Pharma and CP Lab Safety, he has founded several other companies, including Nova Bay Pharmaceuticals, where he took the company public. With over 70 patents, Dr. Najafi combines scientific innovation with a strong commitment to safety and sustainability in laboratory practices. We will discuss his latest book, co-authored with Kelley Najafi, on the "7 Commandments to Save the Planet". Summary Dr. Ron Najafi, a chemist and entrepreneur, discussed his journey from working in the pharmaceutical industry to becoming an advocate for environmental safety. He shared his invention of a product that prevents laboratory pollution and its widespread adoption in the industry. Dr. Ron emphasized the importance of education in understanding the impact of human activities on the planet, citing examples such as the long-lasting effects of plastic waste and the disproportionate generation of carbon dioxide compared to the absorption capacity of trees. He concluded by stressing the need for individuals to take responsibility for their actions and to learn about the consequences of their choices on the environment. Dr. Ron and Dr. Foojan discussed the proper disposal of expired drugs, emphasizing that they should be returned to the pharmacy or manufacturer for safe disposal or recycling. They highlighted the issue of expired medications being thrown into landfills, where they can leach into the soil and contaminate the environment, contributing to antibiotic resistance and other health issues. Dr. Ron advocated for manufacturers to take responsibility for their products at the end of their life cycle, ensuring they are disposed of or recycled safely. Dr. Ron discussed adopting a product as a service, similar to software as a service, where the manufacturer is responsible for the product's longevity. He used the example of a refrigerator manufacturer to illustrate this point, stating that they should be accountable for their products, including disposal and recycling. Dr. Ron also shared his experience with a pharmaceutical company, where a faulty refrigerator was discarded after only six months of use. He emphasized the need for companies to reduce waste, reuse, recycle, and repair products, as outlined in his book. Dr. Ron and Dr. Foojan discussed the need for a circular economy, emphasizing the importance of recycling and reusing materials to reduce waste and protect the environment. They highlighted the negative impact of the current linear economy, which involves taking, making, and disposing of, and suggested that policy changes and regulations are necessary to guide companies toward a circular economy. They also discussed the potential for collaboration between different manufacturers to utilize each other's waste products and the importance of reducing plastic waste, which can harm the environment and human health. Dr. Ron shared that he and his wife have been working on this issue for 20 years and have recently published a book on the subject. Dr. Foojan and Dr. Ron discussed the need for revolutionizing food and energy production to save the planet. They highlighted the current chemically intensive methods of growing food and generating energy, which are detrimental to the environment and human health. Dr. Ron suggested the development of high-yield, less poisonous food production methods and exploring safer energy sources, such as solar and wind power. He also emphasized the need to consider the human cost of producing these energy sources, like cobalt mining in Africa. Dr. Ron concluded that solar and wind energy are currently the cheapest and most environmentally friendly options and should be further developed and utilized. Dr. Foojan and Dr. Ron discussed the importance of industry, policymaking, and consumer responsibility in addressing environmental challenges. Dr. Ron emphasized the need for consumers to educate themselves and take action, such as reducing waste, recycling, and demanding eco-friendly products from manufacturers. He also suggested implementing a deposit system for plastic bottles to encourage their return and creating a new industry that can repurpose plastics. Dr. Ron encouraged everyone to visit landfills and recycling centers to understand the issues better and write letters to their legislators to advocate for change. He invited people to contact him via email or LinkedIn for further discussions.

In this episode of Walk, Don't Run to the Doctor, Miles Hassell MD explores the complex and often controversial topic of alcohol consumption and its impact on health. From historical context to modern studies, he provides a balanced look at the potential benefits and risks of alcohol, encouraging viewers to make informed decisions based on evidence rather than emotion. Summary: Dr. Hassell discusses the nuanced role of alcohol in health and lifestyle. While heavy drinking poses clear dangers—such as liver disease, cardiovascular issues, and societal harm—low to moderate consumption might have benefits in certain contexts. Evidence from large studies suggests reduced risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some forms of dementia for moderate drinkers, particularly when paired with a healthy lifestyle. Key Takeaways: Moderation is Key: Up to 7 drinks per week for women and 10-14 for men may provide benefits, but heavy drinking is harmful. Context Matters: Alcohol's benefits are most evident in a healthy lifestyle, alongside good nutrition and regular exercise. Potential Benefits: Includes improved heart health, reduced type 2 diabetes risk, and enhanced cognitive function. Risks to Consider: Alcohol can still pose risks, including cancer, dependence, and societal harm, even at low levels. Preferred Choice: Red wine may offer additional health benefits due to its antioxidants. Dr. David Spiegel guides you through cyclic sighing, a breathwork practice that helps reduce stress and anxiety. Summary: Dr. David Spiegel guides you through a simple yet powerful breathwork practice that can help reduce stress, anxiety, and boost overall well-being. Backed by Stanford research, this simple technique uses slow, controlled exhales to calm the nervous system and improve overall well-being.Transcript: https://tinyurl.com/3dtwyk44Time: 5 minutes Prepare: Find a comfortable seated or standing position in a quiet environment. Relax your shoulders and jaw.  First Inhale: Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose. Start with your abdomen, allowing it to expand (diaphragmatic breathing) as you fill your lungs about halfway. Hold this breath briefly.  Second Inhale: Continue inhaling through your nose, now expanding your chest to completely fill your lungs. Hold this combined breath (abdomen and chest filled) for a moment.  Exhale: Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth. Make sure the exhale is gentle and lasts about twice as long as the combined inhales.  Repeat the Cycle: Repeat the inhale sequence for a total of 3 cycles (or as desired): Start with a diaphragmatic inhale through your nose, expanding your abdomen. Follow with a chest expansion inhale through your nose to fill your lungs completely. Hold briefly after each combined inhale. Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth, ensuring it's twice as long as the inhales.  Reflect and Relax: After completing the cycles, take a moment to observe how your body feels. Notice any sensations of relaxation, reduced tension, or a calmer state of mind. Guest: Dr. David Spiegel is Willson Professor and Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. They discussed the complex relationship between food, trauma, and addiction. Amy explained how people often turn to food as a way to cope with trauma or emotional pain, leading to unhealthy eating habits and a cycle of self-hatred, highlighting the socialization of food and its role in comfort and nurturing. They both emphasized the need to address the root trauma instead of using food as a coping mechanism. Amy shared her journey with eating disorders and the lessons she learned along the way. She emphasized the importance of breaking free from strict rules and restrictions, creating a balanced and fulfilling life, and highlighting the need for a gradual change process rather than immediate strict rules. Amy explained the concept of the "critter brain," which consists of three parts: the brain stem, the emotional brain (the amygdala), and the prefrontal cortex. She emphasized that the brain sees change as a threat and that relapse is a normal part of the process, especially when one is trying to break free from old patterns. Dr. Zeine added to this by sharing her experiences with individuals who have gone through abuse and addiction, highlighting that relapse is often a part of the learning process and that each time it occurs, there is an opportunity to gain new insights. They discussed the concept of emotional freedom and its role in personal growth. Emotional freedom is recognizing one's power and agency in situations rather than feeling victimized by external circumstances. Emotional freedom also involves letting go of things beyond one's control and focusing on what can be changed. Both stressed the importance of self-reflection and seeking support from others as part of the growth process. They shared their views on self-care, self-love, and self-awareness in relationships. They emphasized that individuals should prioritize their own needs and emotions rather than focusing on their partners' faults. They also highlighted the concept of ebb and flow in relationships, suggesting that periods of distance or separation could strengthen the bond between partners. Amy encouraged people to live their lives to the fullest and pursue their dreams, while Dr. Zeine stressed the importance of maintaining authentic connections with others.

Summary Dr. Ali Novitsky, obesity medicine doctor and fitness expert, shares a comprehensive synopsis of the latest episode on Muscles and Mindset. The episode explores the intricate dynamics of mismatched energetic vibrations and their profound impact on relationships. The discussion commences by revisiting the fundamental concept of energetic health previously covered in episode 180. Dr. Ali delves into the realm of vibrational energy, unveiling the significance of mismatched energy and its far-reaching consequences for personal growth and relationships. Personal anecdotes, including reflections on Dr. Ali's marriage, are shared to exemplify how mismatched energy manifests in diverse relationships. A key observation highlighted is the tendency for individuals with a growth mindset and high vibrational energy to inadvertently lower their own energy by over-functioning for others. A central theme of the episode emphasizes the pivotal role of open communication and boundary-setting in addressing mismatched energy within relationships. Strategic approaches to realign energies, such as seeking assistance, fostering trust, and relinquishing control, are discussed. Various relationship dynamics, spanning from parent-child relationships to workplace friendships, are explored, stressing the importance of creating space for others while honoring their autonomy and boundaries. A substantial segment of the episode focuses on self-relationship dynamics, elucidating how internal roles and responsibilities can contribute to mismatched energy. Listeners are encouraged to introspect on their roles, pinpoint areas of low vibrational energy, and contemplate growth opportunities to bolster overall equilibrium. Dr. Ali also highlights the upcoming Miroval Berkshires retreat, offering a platform for participants to engage in discussions encompassing optimal health, hormone balance, self-compassion, and emotional well-being. The retreat is presented as a transformative experience for individuals seeking to harmonize their energies and uplift their holistic well-being. In conclusion, the episode delves deep into recognizing and navigating mismatched energetic vibrations in relationships, promoting personal development, and attaining a harmonious balance across all spheres of life. Listeners are invited to tune in for profound insights into the influence of energy on connections and well-being.
