Our next guest, Kent Dicks, is revolutionizing this approach as CEO of Life365. With over 30 years of entrepreneurial experience and a pioneering legacy in mobile health since 2006, Kent has dedicated his career to transforming reactive healthcare into proactive, predictive care. As a recognized thought leader who has testified before Congress on mHealth solutions for veterans, Kent combines deep technical expertise with an unwavering passion for improving patient outcomes. Through Life365's innovative Digital Health as a Service platform and strategic partnership with Microsoft, he's creating scalable solutions that connect patients, providers, and AI-driven insights seamlessly. Join us to discover how Kent's vision is shifting healthcare upstream, keeping patients healthy at home, and preparing our industry for the coming demographic tsunami. Dicks is a successful serial entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience providing dynamic and strategic leadership in new and emerging markets. While Dicks has a broad range of experience across several business sectors, he has most recently established himself as one of the true thought leaders in the mHealth (mobile health) space. In 2006, Dicks founded MedApps and immersed himself in the world of healthcare technology. He dedicated himself to improving telehealth systems -- which had shown much promise to benefit the chronic care population worldwide -- with patient-centered solutions that could provide relief to an overburdened healthcare system. While telehealth demonstrated success in improving patient outcomes, widespread adoption was elusive. The existing technology was expensive and complex – especially for the older patient population, which typically consumes the most healthcare dollars. Ubiquity of cellular technology with increasingly lower costs inspired Dicks to develop more automated and cost-effective remote patient monitoring solutions to help care for Medicare and Medicaid populations.Dicks was a leading pioneer in the evolving mHealth field, using dedicated M2M cellular “hubs” to connect patient, providers, and electronic health records. His lower-cost mHealth solutions provided the industry with a much-needed alternative to enable a proactive healthcare model. The consistent flow of accurate, real-time data provided with the MedApps solution gave healthcare professionals the ability to better track the conditions of individuals with chronic disease in order to keep them out of the hospital, intervene when necessary, and avoid expensive admissions and readmissions. Dicks implemented a strategy centered around ease of

During every conversation among collectors and music lovers, we often throw names of artists and bands, their releases (rare or not), collaborations, their impact on the music, who sampled them, etc. … When the name Roy Ayers comes up, everybody pauses because he is the jazz-funk royalty that always requires special attention. He was on a league of his own. Incomparable to anybody else. Unfortunately, we lost him few days ago. Another legend has passed on the torch and is going to music heaven. Like to many others, he is a huge reason why I love funk and jazz-funk. I started listening to him in the E80s with his boogie-funk period…and then I went back in time collecting every piece of records he has released as solo artist, with his band Ubiquity or as collaborators and producer on many albums from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s… I am glad that I saw him live in 2005…amazing concert. Neural Nets and Nobel Prizes: AI's 40-Year Journey from the Lab to Ubiquity

In this episode of AI + a16z, General Partner Anjney Midha shares his perspective on the recent collection of Nobel Prizes awarded to AI researchers in both Physics and Chemistry. He talks through how early work on neural networks in the 1980s spurred continuous advancement in the field — even through the "AI winter" — which resulted in today's extremely useful AI technologies. Here's a sample of the discussion, in response to a question about whether we will see more high-quality research emerge from sources beyond large universities and commercial labs:"It can be easy to conclude that the most impactful AI research still requires resources beyond the reach of most individuals or small teams. And that open source contributions, while valuable, are  unlikely to match the breakthroughs from well-funded labs. I've even heard heard some dismissive folks call it cute, and undermine the value of those."But on the other hand, I think that you could argue that open source and individual contributions are becoming increasingly more important in AI development. I think that the democratization of AI will lead probably to more diverse and innovative applications. And I think, in particular, the reason we should expect an explosion in home scientists — folks who aren't necessarily affiliated with a top-tier academic, or for that matter,  industry lab — is that as open source models get more and more accessible, the rate limiter really is on the creativity of somebody who's willing to apply the power of that model's computational ability to a novel domain. And there are just a ton of domains and combinatorial intersections of different disciplines."Our blind spot for traditional academia [is that] it's not particularly rewarding to veer off the publish-or-perish conference circuit. And if you're at a large industry lab and you're not contributing directly to the next model release, it's not that clear how you get rewarded. And so being an independent actually frees you up from the incentive misstructure, I think, of some of the larger labs. And if you get to leverage the millions of dollars that the Llama team spent on pre-training, applying it to data sets that nobody else has perused before, it results in pretty big breakthroughs."Learn more:They trained artificial neural networks using physicsThey cracked the code for proteins' amazing structuresNotable AI models by yearFollow on X:Anjney MidhaDerrick Harris Check out everything a16z is doing with artificial intelligence here, including articles, projects, and more podcasts.

Welcome back to the grand finale of What Customers Want, a limited 4-part series from the Fintech Takes podcast, hosted by me and Corey Besaw, President of APAC and co-founder of Ubiquity. In Episode 4, Corey and I are joined by Aditi Shekar and Mike Forsyth at Zeta, a company that's building a "multiplayer" financial experience for families, offering adaptable joint banking. Their mission, in other words? Exceptional customer service. We've added complexity with each episode, but this time we're diving into the juiciest layer of all: how AI, especially generative AI, is reshaping customer experience and where it's headed next. Highlights include: Exploring Zeta's concierge model—a compelling blend of generative AI and human support that dials down customer anxiety. Gone are the frustrating “We're closed until Monday” moments! Here, AI serves not only as a stand-in, but as your savvy financial coach, ready to unravel transaction data and fine-tune your spending strategy. By leveraging generative AI like ChatGPT, fintechs such as Zeta can handle 30-40% of basic inquiries, freeing human agents to tackle more complex issues. But this balancing act brings challenges; compliance and security are crucial in financial services. How do we find the right mix between constant availability and necessary filtering? The pivotal role data infrastructure plays in this equation. While LLMs excel in the “last mile” of communication, they rely on robust systems for accuracy. Given the exorbitant computational costs of snapshotting an insane number data points per customer, how can organizations ensure effective AI deployment? Imagining a future with micro-models that tailor interactions to individual behaviors. Can AI juggle basic requests while knowing when to tap a human agent? Will generative AI step up as your personal financial coach, or will we hit a plateau like the one Tesla faced with its self-driving promises—remember 2015, when they said fully autonomous cars would hit in...two years? In short, early AI models were a chaotic free-for-all, drawing from the wild west of the internet. Now, we're refining that data for smarter models, but AGI remains an open question. What's clear is that with innovations like GPT driving the bus, fintech is poised for explosive growth. In customer support, cutting-edge tech could be the silver bullet that transforms how customers get what they want in financial services. Enjoyed this series? Welcome back What Customers Want, a limited 4-part series from the Fintech Takes podcast, hosted by me and Corey Besaw, President of APAC and co-founder of Ubiquity. In Episode 3, Corey and I are joined by Ahon Sarkar, SVP & GM at Helix, to dive into the natural tension points between fintechs, banks, and those ever-evolving customer expectations.  Financial services are leaning hard on self-service automation, but fintech moves at lightning speed—constantly innovating to craft the perfect solution. So, what happens when customer expectations and fintech's rapid pace don't quite sync up? Highlights include: When fintechs, banks, and platforms first come together, discussions around customer service can be a mixed bag. Banks want to know if the fintech understands support systems or if they're building from scratch. How do you scale a lean team while delivering an exceptional experience? Choosing a sponsor bank is like setting the stage for long term success. Alignment is key. Do they have experience managing the complexities of third-party models like BaaS? Can they handle the risks that come with fintech partnerships? As fintechs scale, banks must strike a balance between fostering innovation and keeping control. It's a bit like managing a kid on a trampoline—gradually handing over trust while ensuring the right safeguards are in place (or so we'd hope!). As Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) matures, customer service is becoming a competitive edge—but only if fintechs and banks can align on expectations and regulatory standards. What happens when customer support or fraud spirals out of control? In the tug-of-war between innovation and regulation, tune in to hear how these growing pains may create a brighter future for customer experience in financial services. Welcome to What Customers Want, a limited 4-part series from the Fintech Takes podcast, hosted by me and Corey Besaw, President of APAC and co-founder of Ubiquity. In Episode 2, Corey and I venture back into fintech's overlooked frontier–customer service–as we sit down with Chime's first full-time fraud manager, Marcus Vinson. Join us behind the scenes to discover how, as an early-stage fintech, Chime navigated explosive growth while prioritizing a customer-first approach. Highlights include: When Marcus joined Chime as their first FT fraud manager in 2017, customer support was a blend of outsourced and in-house. Fast forward 3-4 years, and their customer base grew by nearly 4,000% or more. What happens when your support system is suddenly under that kind of pressure? The delicate balancing act between in-house teams and outsourced partners (and how BPO partnerships are crucial for scalability). How can fintechs leverage both as they scale without sacrificing quality, consistency, and their strategic partnerships? The importance of investing early in data-driven fraud detection (and aligning proactively with bank sponsors from the get-go). With first-party fraud on the rise, staying ahead of fraud prevention is all about scaling, standardizing, and automating processes. Discover the power of building structured systems amid constant change. What metrics should fintechs focus on to define success as they grow? Tune in as we unpack these big questions and more, exploring how fintechs can scale their customer support without losing the human touch. The Kardashians are masters of marketing. It's the way they live. From their TV show to their individual brands like 818 Tequila, Good American and Skims, the Kardashians and Jenners are marketing themselves. So with the help of our special guest, Head of Marketing & Communications at Foursquare, Michele Morelli, we are taking marketing lessons from The Kardashians. We'll talk about using the power of proximity, controlling your own narrative, and much more.About our guest, Michele MorelliMichele Morelli is Head of Marketing & Communications at Foursquare, where she oversees Foursquare's efforts and strategy across product marketing, corporate communications, public relations, partner marketing, and design. Michele brings with her over 20 years of experience across numerous industries – including technology, finance, and media, at companies like Gartner, Yahoo and AOL. Prior to joining the company in 2021, Michele served as EVP of Marketing at Toluna Corporate.  What B2B Companies Can Learn From The Kardashians:Use the power of proximity. Reference and connect cultural touchpoints to your brand. It's like how the Kardashians are close to the OJ Simpson trial, Paris Hilton, the Olympics, Kanye West…all cultural touchpoints that increase their awareness and brand recall in the public's mind. Ian says, “It matters to be close to Hilton because everybody knows what a Hilton is. It matters to be close to the OJ Simpson case because everybody knew what that was. It matters to be close to the Olympics because everybody knew what that was. A lot of times in marketing, you're trying to figure out how you can leverage the power and the story of other things to do that sort of jiu jitsu, to take that energy and put that wind in your sail too and propel you forward.” Similarly, you can align your brand with other like-minded brands and cross-promote content. Michele says that “There's this cross-promotional audience blending that has happened simply because of who [the Kardashians] have aligned themselves with.”Control your own narrative. The Kardashians were able to control their story by creating their own reality show. Michele says, “Controlling the narrative is always incredibly important, but two, the consistency from which they hit the narrative is so important. Like, they know what they stand for, they know what the business is they want to promote, they know how to weave a narrative around it. In marketing where you want to control the message that goes out, if there's going to be a story that's written, how do you make sure that it's framed in the best possible light for your brand?” Quotes*”John Wanamaker was famous for the quote, ‘Half of my advertising spend is wasted, the only problem is I don't know which half.' It is no longer true. I think we have a much better direction of how we are spending our money and where we're actually seeing movement. The question is what aperture you look at it with. Is it a week? Is it six weeks? Is it six months? So really making sure you have that right window to measure your media I think is also going to be very important.” - Michele Morelli*”What's really important from a brand perspective that I think Kim embodies is that if you are a legacy brand or a heritage brand, it is very difficult to move away from how people perceive you and what the core is. There's always a, ‘Yeah, but…' when we talk about Kim. And I think for marketers, we see that if once you are thought of in one way, getting people to come along for the journey, that you're something different, especially if you're still doing that same thing is very, very difficult.” - Michele MorelliTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Michele Morelli, Head of Marketing & Communications at Foursquare[1:55] The Kardashians' Marketing Powerhouse[3:20] Foursquare's Marketing Strategy[5:2 The Origin of The Kardashians Show[8:13] The Evolution and Impact of The Kardashians[15:32] Marketing Takeaways from The Kardashians[18:38] The Power of Proximity in Marketing[36:10] The Kardashian Flywheel Effect[36:21] Kris Jenner: The Mastermind[37:56] The Ubiquity of the Kardashian Brand[45:54] The Evolution of Foursquare[51:18] Content Strategy and ROI[1:00:01] Embracing Technology in MarketingLinksWatch The KardashiansConnect with Michele on LinkedInLearn more about FoursquareAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Putting a dollar amount on a single species, or entire ecosystems, is a contentious idea, but in 2023, the New York Stock Exchange proposed a new nature-based asset class which put a price tag on global nature of 5,000 trillion U.S. dollars.  This financialization of nature comes with perverse incentives and fails to recognize the intrinsic value contained in biodiversity and all the benefits it provides for humans, argues Indigenous economist Rebecca Adamson, on this episode. Instead, she suggests basing economies on principles contained in Indigenous economics. "The most simple thing would be to fit your economy into a living, breathing, natural physics law framework. And if you look at Indigenous economies, they really talk about balance and harmony, and those aren't quaint customs. Those are design principles," she says.
