Become a patron at https://www.patreon.com/bionicplanet In Episode 100 of Bionic Planet, part of the Tribes of the Climate Realm vertical, we delve into the origins of the voluntary carbon market -- a story that has never been told before. Today's show is the first of many offering a truer, completer, and more accurate glimpse into the origins of the Voluntary Carbon Market than you've probably ever heard before. The episode draws on a 2022 discussion with environmental economists Marc Stuart and Mark Kenber, who were instrumental in creating the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) in 2005 to meet two core objectives: first, to accelerate emission reductions in the wake of failed government policy and, second, to test new approaches to meeting the climate challenge. We offer a brief history of climate negotiations leading up to 2005 and the exclusion of forest protection and sustainable farming from the Kyoto Protocol and the Marrakesh Accords. The discussion touches on the complexities of integrating these crucial elements into the market, emphasizing the importance of balancing environmental integrity with development-focused activities. Join me, Steve Zwick, in this insightful journey through the history and evolution of the voluntary carbon market, as we strive to create a more sustainable future for our planet. I have to talk about this fight card because I truly liked Bellator vs. Rizin. While recording the episode I encountered a few technical issues, but I believe everything turned out okay in the end. For a wonderful podcast addressing this fantastic event, listen to The Unified Rules of Podcast Episode 43 - Bellator vs Rizin
Steven Sickles, Mark Metts, and Eddie Springer introduce themselves and then talk the idea of unified rules and how one inspector is working towards it. Judging in MMA is absolutely abysmal. Ed Gallo is here to dispute official decisions and set the record straight on a few high-profile robberies. He breaks down the fights round-by-round and gives context on the official scoring criteria outlined in the Unified Rules of MMA. In this episode, Ed breaks down the scoring of Alexander Volkanovski's intense rematch with the all-time-great Max Holloway. Was this a bad call, a close competitive fight that could have gone either way, or plainly a good decision? In this installment of #TSR I make the case that Bobby Green, without question, won the third round of his recent fight with Raphael Fiziev. In order to make the point I give a quick refresher on the “Updated” VS “Non Updated” versions of The Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. I explain some of the differences between the different versions of the rules including how to apply the “Updated Scoring Criteria” which uses a tiered or weighted system to judge rounds based on “Effective Striking/Grappling, Aggression & Octagon Control IN THAT ORDER.” Furthermore I explain how the judge in question, who will remain unnamed, took to Twitter to “try” and defend his scorecard using the very criteria I use to explain how he couldn't have gotten it more wrong. From casual fans to hardcore MMA psychopaths, there is still a widespread misunderstanding of how fights are actually meant to be scored and judged. Even after the official Unified Rules of MMA were updated in 2017 to make the language even more clear, we run into this problem - even on the professional level by judges, commentators, and the fighters themselves. Ed Gallo and Sriram Muralidaran are here to explain and contextualize the official rules of MMA and correct common misconceptions. Our compilation show is a deep dive with host, Trent Reinsmith, into the bigger news and goings on in MMA, both inside and outside the cage; presented with a critical, unbiased eye. Here is some detail on what’s going on here. The “regular” ‘C’mon Now MMA Podcast’ is a daily podcast of varying lengths, the concept of the podcast is to look at goings-on in MMA and dig below the surface of that news — it can be found here: cmonnow.substack.com/. This show is a compilation of some of the best topics covered over the past week. Here is a summary of the topics discussed, during the latest episode of the weekly “Best of” edition of the podcast. We hope you enjoy listening to the show and will continue to support it going forward. This week's topics include: * Where is the innovation and experimentation in the UFC? * NBA and NHL are doing things different inside the bubble, why isn’t the UFC? * Anthony Johnson should not be welcomed back to the UFC by fans, nor the UFC brass - if he is - that is gross, despicable and not a surprise. * Link to 2019 story on Anthony Johnson: https://cmonnow.substack.com/p/the-case-against-anthony-johnsons * Cormier’s second career as a UFC champion and how he should be an inspiration to other athletes but he won’t be. * If you’re a business, do you sponsor Jon Jones? Do you trust him to represent you? * John McCarthy talks Nevada’s instant replay rule vs. Unified Rules of MMA and it’s a surprise. Plus, the upside and downside of instant replay availability to referees during fights. * John McCarthy on the UFC’s ability to change the design of the gloves to reduce eye pokes. * UFC bonuses don’t change lives. Bonuses might change a year, but they don’t change a life. UFC athletes need to fight for a bigger piece of the pie and healthcare. * Dana White shits on Curtis Blaydes again for doing exactly what he said he was going to do in his most recent fight. * I’m no genius, but it sounds like the DWCS fighters are going to take roster spots from higher priced talent. * John McCarthy on the one thing he would change right away about MMA. * Dana White can call me a scumbag all he wants, but he shouldn’t lie about me, which is what he is doing — again. * A note on my, let’s call it attitude, for lack of a better term and the fact that it actually does come from a good place. This week in “Press Row,” Jordan Breen and BloodyElbow.com writer -- and licensed MMA judge -- Paul Gift discuss the ongoing aftermath of the Gegard Mousasi-Chris Weidman debacle, the impacts of the Unified Rules being fractured and states deciding their own regulations, the practical difficulties in constantly updating the rules of MMA and how the UFC can potentially turn regulatory controversies into legitimate media coverage.

Officials have long dubbed that “playing the game.” It’s no longer viable. Now, fighters must have both hands on the ground — either their palms or fists — to be considered grounded. As always, if a fighter’s knee or any other part of the body except the hands and feet are touching the mat, then that fighter is also grounded. MMA’s Greatest Podcast Extended fingers Eye pokes have been a topic of controversy lately. They are fight-ending, career-damaging illegal maneuvers. Under the original rules, referees could do nothing about it until it was too late and the poke was already landed. The new rules empower referees by making it a foul to extend your fingers outward toward an opponent’s face, which could lead to an eye poke. Previously, a referee could tell a fighter to close his or her hand, but the ref had no recourse — a point could not be taken. Now, it can be if a fighter continues to extend fingers in the direction of an opponent’s face. Female apparel The days of T-shirts, half-shirts and loose-fitting tank tops (sorry, Reebok) are over in women’s MMA. Women must wear either a sports bra or a form-fitting rash guard in the cage. For bottoms, the rules are the same as for men: nothing below the knee, which means no more grappling or yoga pants. Why is this a big deal? Well, loose-fitting shirts are actually dangerous. Fingers and toes can get caught in them. They can slip over a fighter’s head if too loose. UFC fighter Valerie Letourneau recently had an issue when her opponent Joanna Calderwood’s foot pulled down her tanktop with a front kick and she nearly had a wardrobe malfunction. Letourneau covered up and was struck in the head by Calderwood when she wasn’t defending herself. That kind of thing can’t happen in MMA. Grappling pants, which have been used by Marloes Coenen and others, are an inherent advantage. Men have never been able to wear them under the Unified Rules. This is the first time women’s apparel has been standardized in the official rules. Many have asked, Why are a bunch of men deciding what women can wear? That’s a good point. But MMA rules and regulations committee chairman Sean Wheelock consulted with Invicta FC matchmaker and women’s MMA pioneer Julie Kedzie .before writing these regulations. MMA’s Greatest Podcast Heel kicks to the kidneys The last time any of us saw this technique was Royce Gracie vs. Ken Shamrock. It’s not prevalent and the fact there was a rule against it was kind of odd. All other blows to the kidneys are 100 percent legal, but heel kicks (used by fighters holding opponents in guard) were banned. Not any longer. Heel kicks to the kidneys aren’t much more than an annoyance or cause to change positions, as demonstrated Tuesday by MMA legends and Randy Couture and Jeremy Horn. “The kidney strike with the heel is not an effective strike,” Couture told MMA Fighting. “It doesn’t make sense for it to be illegal. We do get hit in the kidneys. I can get in on a shot, if you’re trying to take an opponent down, and he’s perfectly free to hit me in the back all that he wants. It’s not illegal now.” Grabbing the clavicle Very few people knew this was even illegal before. The foul has now been removed. It was unanimous this week at the ABC Conference that no one had ever seen this attack attempted in an MMA fight. MMA’s Greatest Podcast
