VTDigger is re-releasing some of our favorite interviews of the past decade to mark the 10th anniversary of The Vermont Conversation. This Vermont Conversation with Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland) was originally published in May 2022.Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin was expecting trouble after the November 2020 presidential election. Raskin and his Democratic colleagues in Congress anticipated that former President Donald Trump would try to subvert the results and try to derail Congress's normally pro-forma certification of President Joe Biden's election. But Raskin was blindsided. On December 31, 2020, Raskin's only son, Tommy, a promising young student at Harvard Law School, took his own life after a long struggle with depression. Seven days later — and just a day after burying his son — Raskin returned to Congress to cast his vote to certify Biden's election. That's when Trump supporters mounted a violent insurrection in the U.S. Capitol, egged on by the defeated president. Speaker Nancy Pelosi then tapped the grieving Raskin to be lead manager in Trump's second impeachment trial. Since the summer, Raskin has been a member of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the Capitol. Raskin tells his intensely personal and political story in his new book, “Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy.”

The January 6 attack on Congress as it met to certify Joe Biden's presidential victory is a day that will live on in infamy, yet for Maryland congressman Jamie Raskin, this was just the next in a sequence of tragic events that changed his life forever. Having lost his son to suicide only days before, and days later leading the ensuing impeachment effort against Trump, Rep. Raskin's 45-day journey at the start of 2021 is an inspiring epic of strength, tragedy and determination. In his new memoir, Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy, Raskin recounts that after the tragic loss of his son Tommy, it was Tommy's values and vision for the country that provided him inspiration to not only weather the challenges of January 6 but to lead the ensuing impeachment trial of Donald Trump for inciting insurrection. Facing division and the tremors of a nation rocked to its core, Rep. Raskin and his nine-member team were able to lead the most bipartisan impeachment trial ever conducted. Rep. Raskin has served as an elected official in Maryland since 2007 and represented its 8th Congressional District since 2017. A professor of constitutional law at American University Washington College of Law, chair of the House Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, Raskin has been a leading voice in Congress for executive accountability and electoral integrity. Please join us as congressman Raskin recounts his moving story of balancing tragic personal loss and appalling political violence simultaneously, and how he found hope to press on in his darkest moment to continue fighting for American democracy. The grief is nightmarish, but the love that suffuses the text is even more powerful—the love for family and a lost child, as well as a love for a fragile democracy. It takes its greatest inspiration from the idealism of Raskin's son.” -- David Remnick, The New Yorker “[Congressman Raskin] is, in addition to everything else, a really good writer. On December 31st, 2020, his son Tommy Raskin tragically died by suicide after a long battle with depression. Only seven days later, Tommy's father arrived at the Capitol to play his part in certifying the results of the recent presidential election; with him came his daughter, Tabitha, and her husband, Hank. Instead of witnessing a testament to democratic ideals, however, the Representative and his family watched in horror as insurrectionists raged up Pennsylvania Avenue, angry and wild and hell-bent on attempting the unthinkable: a coup in the halls of Congress. Later, with the wreckage cleared away and the doors back on their hinges, Representative Raskin set aside his grief and returned to the Capitol to lead the impeachment of President Donald Trump -- an undertaking the Representative recounts in Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy, his new book on the public madness of January 6 as it collided with the private sorrow of a grieving family. Today, our hosts Kelly and JJ , together with Brady President  Kris Brown, welcome Representative Raskin to the podcast for a discussion on the root causes of January 6, the national sickness it continues to feed, the test our democracy sweated through -- and how one father's love for his son stood quietly at the center of it all. Mentioned in this podcast:Origin of an Insurrection (Brady)The Attack at the Capitol Did Not Come Out of the Blue  (Brady)Jamie Raskin's Year of Tragedy and Trump (New York Times)  Rep. Tom's guest today is Congressman Jamie Raskin, who represents Maryland's 8th District, which includes parts of Montgomery, Carroll, and Frederick Counties. Raskin came to national prominence early last year when he was tapped by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be the lead manager in Donald Trump's second impeachment trial. Trump was charged with “incitement of insurrection” for the purpose of overturning the results of the 2020 election. As Rep. Raskin writes in his new book, although the Senate demonstrated the most bipartisan support ever for conviction in a presidential impeachment trial, Mr. Trump “beat the constitutional spread,” in Raskin's words, and avoided conviction. The final vote was 57-43, 10 votes short of the number needed to convict. Rep. Raskin is a member of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the Capitol. The committee has interviewed more than 300 witnesses in private sessions. It plans to hold public hearings in the coming weeks. This Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of the insurrection at the Capitol. But for the Raskin family and legions of their friends, last Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of a terrible tragedy. The Congressman's son, Tommy, a 25-year-old student at the Harvard Law School, succumbed to depression and died by suicide. The riot at the Capitol occurred just a week after Tommy Raskin's death. Jamie Raskin has written a book that weaves the story of Tommy's life into the Congressman's work as the lead impeachment manager, reflecting on his personal anguish, and the national anguish that the country experienced as the very foundations of democratic rule were threatened. The book is called Unthinkable:  Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy.  Congressman Raskin joins us on Zoom from his home in Takoma Park.
