This episode takes you deep into the wilds and waters of North Carolina, where folklore and fear go hand in hand.We kick things off in the murky lowlands of Scape Ore Swamp, home to one of the strangest cryptid encounters on record. Known as the Lizard Man, this creature first terrorized the small town of Bishopville in the late 1980s. With glowing red eyes, scaly skin, and a towering frame, witnesses described something straight out of a nightmare. But some say this wasn't a one-time visitor. Could the Scape Ore Swamp Monster be part of something bigger—another link in North Carolina's long history of Bigfoot sightings? From there, we head into the dense forests and remote backroads, where encounters with Bigfoot have spanned generations. Hunters, hikers, and locals tell stories of hulking, hair-covered figures crossing highways in the dead of night, of eerie howls that send shivers down your spine, and of something massive lurking just beyond the tree line. These aren't just isolated incidents—they're part of a pattern stretching across the state, from the Uwharrie National Forest to the Blue Ridge Mountains. But the mysteries don't stop in the woods. Off the coast, the Outer Banks are known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, where more than 2,000 ships have met their end. Some of them, according to legend, never left. We explore the chilling stories of North Carolina's ghost ships, like the Carroll A. Deering, found run aground in 1921 with its entire crew vanished. And then there's the Flaming Ship of Ocracoke, a phantom vessel said to appear in flames before vanishing into thin air. Then come the booms. Along these same shores, locals have heard thunderous explosions for centuries—sounds that rattle homes, shake the ground, and leave no physical trace. They call them the Seneca Guns. Are they earthquakes? Underwater landslides? Something stranger? No one knows. But the booms keep coming. And just when you think it can't get any stranger, we dig into North Carolina's werewolf legends. From the colonial era to the present day, there are stories of shapeshifters, half-human beasts, and howls that don't belong to any known predator. Whether they're European legends brought over by settlers or something older and native to these lands, the werewolves of North Carolina still haunt the edges of local lore. From swamp monsters and Sasquatch to ghost ships, phantom booms, and werewolves—this is North Carolina like you've never heard it before. If you're loving these stories, here's what to do next:Follow and subscribe to the show.Turn on auto-downloads so you never miss an episode.Leave a rating and review—it helps more people find us, and we appreciate it.Most importantly, tell your friends, family, and co-workers. A man named Alex had a prolonged and terrifying encounter with what he believes to be Bigfoot. But this story is very different from what most of us are probably used to when we think of the infamous Cryptid, and it raises questions about what Bigfoot could possibly be. During the Covid-19 lockdown, Alex needed an escape and decided to go camping in the Uwharrie National Forest by himself. The park was closed and off-limits, but he found a very isolated spot and hiked in all by himself to set up camp. Upon entering the woods, he described an electric static feeling coming over his body—a sense of crossing over a veil—and started to experience what can only be described as telepathic impressions. Over the course of the day and night, Alex experienced a series of bizarre and terrifying events that left him confused and traumatized. Only later, after researching what happened to him, did he learn that these things are all connected to the sightings of Bigfoot. Everyone interviewed in this series signed a document stating that they are telling the truth, and not being deceptive in any way. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this episode. Joshua Cutchin and Timothy talk with Alex about his intense encounter in the Uwharrie National Forest. A solo camping trip started with the woods impossibly silent, before Alex felt like he was getting downloads of information in his mind–and things only got stranger from there: “giant monkey” whoops; unseen footsteps encircling his tent; creatures communicating in unknown language; weird lights in the trees; and more.If you would like to help us continue to make Strange Familiars, get bonus content, t-shirts, stickers, and more rewards, you can become a patron: http://www.patreon.com/StrangeFamiliarsIf you would prefer a one-time payment to help us out, here is a PayPal.me link - you can change the number 25 in the URL to any amount: https://www.paypal.me/timothyrenner/25Our Strange Familiars / Lost Grave etsy shop has art, books, patches, t-shirts, and more ... including original art done for Strange Familiars: https://www.etsy.com/shop/lostgraveStrange Familiars t-shirts and other designs are available here: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/strange-familiars?ref_id=14000Episode 328 notes and links:Episode artwork by Timothy… here is the original:You can purchase the original illustration in our etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1249904868/bigfoot-original-illustration-by-timothyRiverbend Comics: https://www.riverbendcomics.comRiverbend Comics Instagram: @riverbendcomics90 Days to the Perfect Puppy: https://perfectpuppies.sithappens.us/90-daysKarmic Garden: https://www.etsy.com/shop/KarmicGardenStrange Familiars Curiosity of the Week #49: Glowing Tea SetYou can purchase this set in our etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1263915229/glowing-tea-set-uranium-glass-strangeTimothy's books: https://www.amazon.com/Timothy-Renner/e/B072X44SD5Strange Familiars ‘Awoken Tree' t-shirts are available in our Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/739690857/strange-familiars-podcast-awoken-treeAlison: https://www.etsy.com/shop/odpeacockChad's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNB7MSJ2F1SRBPcQsEFLnvg (make sure to subscribe to Chad's channel, Ruck Rabbit Outdoors.)Chad's etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/RuckRabbitOutdoorsTo help with the Capuchin Day Center's work with the homeless you can donate here: https://www.capuchindaycentre.ieand here: https://www.cskdetroit.orgContact us via email at: strangefamiliarspodcast@gmail.comhttp://www.facebook.com/strangefamiliarsJoin the Strange Familiars Gathering group on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/strangefamiliars/instagram: @strangefamiliarshttp://www.strangefamiliars.comIntro and background music by Stone Breath. My guest tonight comes to us from my home state of North Carolina. Chris was a staunch skeptic when it came to Bigfoot, but he has had some encounters near the Uwharrie National Forest that may have changed his mind! Check out his email below. Support The Showhttps://www.patreon.com/paranormalworldproductionsAll The Socials And Stuff/Contact Brianhttps://linktr.ee/ParanormalWorldProductionsFollow The Show On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sasquatchodyssey/Chris Writes....Hey Brian! First of all, Love the show! You do a bang up job! So, I've had 3 encounters with what I believe have been Sasquatch in central NC. It wasn't until the 3rd one happened that I started putting pieces together. Just a little history about myself. I have lived around the Uwharrie National Forest 95% of my life. I've always heard stories of people seeing Bigfoot type creatures or hearing screams, whoops and so forth. But, being I have always enjoyed the outdoors hunting, fishing and gold panning - I never believed in any of this. Finding Bigfoot came and did a show in the Uwharries and had their “town hall meeting” at the fire station that I volunteered at. I was sick at the time and couldn't go to the meeting but I wanted to go hear these “crazy peoples” stories and see what it was all about. At the next fire meeting all the firemen where laughing and joking about “these people” and their outlandish stories. So to say I was a skeptic was an understatement. Fast forward a few years. I talked with a guy at church who knew I was into gold panning and wanted me to come down and check his creek to see if it had any gold. I agreed and said I wasn't sure when I could come but I would first free second I had. I ended up getting off work around lunch time one day and decided to go down and check it out. They weren't home so I parked at the gate and walked in to the property about 200 yards or so. To give you an idea of the landscape as you walk down an old logging road there is a mountain immediately to my right that would be tough to walk up and had a power line running up and over the mountain top. To my left is about 20ft of rough brush lining the creek. The creek banks are about 4ft tall with the creek running in the bottom. So as I'm walking I'm trying to find a clear spot to get down to the creek. Knowing this area is swarming with Timber Rattlers I'm taking my time and watching my steps carefully. So at about the 200yrd area I find a nice, clear, pretty level spot to climb into the creek. In the creek in a huge flat rock and I decide to use it as a work station to put my backpack and stuff on to keep them dry. So I'm here about 2 hrs and decide to stop and take a break. I'm standing there drinking some water and watching leeches swim around my rubber boots. All of a sudden something came flying through the tree tops. My first thought is “I've never heard a bird flying through the tree tops hitting limbs and leaves like that!” My second thought was maybe it was acorns falling? But I'm surrounded by pines! And it was moving from left to right and not straight down! So as I'm standing there scratching my head I hear something else! This time I track it with my eyes and see a rock about the size of a Jr sized football fly over my head, over the creek and land in the brush on the other side with a thud! I'm standing there with my mouth agape! I put my hand on my 9mm and say out loud “You stay over there and I'll stay over here!” I pack my stuff up and head for my truck! As I'm walking out I feel like I'm being watched! So I have my head on a swivel! At the end of the logging road where I parked is what was used as the logging deck, so it's kind of open. The tree line felt like a tidal wave that was going to engulf me if I didn't get away! I threw my stuff in the bed of my truck and hauled ass! When I got to the next stop sign I had to take a minute and get myself together! I was shook! I've got more detail about the aftermath and 2 more encounters while hunting and fishing if you are interested.

On this special edition of Sasquatch Tracks, the team is joined by researchers David Ellis and Julie Rench, who discuss their ongoing research with audio recordings of unknown provenance in various parts of the United States. Joining us to discuss this unique research, Julie brings us a remarkable selection of recordings she has made near the Uwharrie National Forest in North Carolina, with comparisons to similar recording types David has been collecting for years in the Pacific Northwest. David Ellis was born and currently lives in Washington State. He obtained his BA degree in Psychology from the University of Washington in 1974, and now retired, David lives in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. Ellis has followed the Bigfoot Phenomenon since 1963, but became involved in the field in 2006, and joined the Olympic Project with Derek Randles in 2010. In addition to field studies and track casting methods, Ellis also taught himself to record and edit field recordings. This analysis led him to collect hundreds of suspicious audio vocalizations clips. To date, he has reviewed 1,000s of hours of audio using Bio-acoustics methods of analysis, which we’ll have him tell us more about over the course of this discussion. Julie Rench has been a field investigator for many years now, focusing her attention on the area near where she resides, the Uwharrie National Forest, which in recent years has become a focal point of activity right here in the Old North State. Like David, investigates the possibility that Sasquatch exists, and has had an interest in unknown phenomena for several years. She is a member of the Carolina Cryptid Research Group, a co-host on Monster X Radio’s podcast “On the Shoulders of Giants with Thomas Steenburg” and others. Julie has been conducting an audio collection and analysis project in the area, and tonight both of them join us not only to discuss this, but also to analyze some of that audio they have collected, which we’ll be featuring over the course of this discussion. On this episode of "On the Shoulders of Giants with Thomas Steenburg" Thomas and Julie discuss some interesting reports from her home state of North Carolina especially in the Uwharrie National Forest, which Julie happens to live just a few short miles from. Thomas is from British Columbia and has been researching the Sasquatch enigma since 1978 and is considered by many to be an "old school" investigator. He has authored three books on the topic: "The Sasquatch in Alberta"', 1989; “Sasquatch, Bigfoot, The Continuing Mystery", 1993; and "In search of Giants", 2000. Thomas has also co-authored two other titles: "Meet the Sasquatch", 2004 and "Sasquatch in British Columbia”, 2012. He has also written many articles and appeared on numerous television and Radio documentaries. Thomas is one of the last old school investigators who was privy to the stories and was friends with several of the “Squatchfathers”! Julie lives in her beautiful home state of North Carolina just outside of the Uwharrie Forest. She is intrigued by the possibility that the creature known as Sasquatch may exist and is a member of the Carolina Cryptid Field Research team. Powered by Sasquatch Coffee!

After a brief hiatus due to the start of school, we're back. In this episode, we're reviewing a local trail, The Birkhead Mountain Trail, part of the Uwharrie National Forest (sort of). We also talk about what's in our respective packs, the meaning of character names in Dragonball Z, and a mountain that isn't really a mountain.
Tonight we will be talking to three guests. My first guest Brian describes a terrifying night in the Uwharrie National Forest and having to pull his weapon. Next, we will be talking to Josh who comes to us from the state of Minnesota. Josh has two encounters he will be sharing with us. Josh originally did not want to come forward because in his second encounter the creature looked very human in the face. Josh says "This has really bothered me Wes, the thing I saw looked very human like in the face but it acted like an animal. Here is a picture that is very close to what I saw.." Then we will wrap up with Boni who comes to us from East Texas. She describes breaking down on the highway about 6 miles from her home and being stalked as she walked along the highway. Boni says "I was so scared, I had no idea what was going on. I could hear talking in the woods but could not make out what they were saying and whatever this thing was, it was big and was pacing me as I walked along the highway. Every time I stopped I could smell this terrible smell like rotting meat. I have had some strange things happen at my house I would like to discuss as well."
