This episode takes you deep into the wilds and waters of North Carolina, where folklore and fear go hand in hand.We kick things off in the murky lowlands of Scape Ore Swamp, home to one of the strangest cryptid encounters on record. Known as the Lizard Man, this creature first terrorized the small town of Bishopville in the late 1980s. With glowing red eyes, scaly skin, and a towering frame, witnesses described something straight out of a nightmare. But some say this wasn't a one-time visitor. Could the Scape Ore Swamp Monster be part of something bigger—another link in North Carolina's long history of Bigfoot sightings? From there, we head into the dense forests and remote backroads, where encounters with Bigfoot have spanned generations. Hunters, hikers, and locals tell stories of hulking, hair-covered figures crossing highways in the dead of night, of eerie howls that send shivers down your spine, and of something massive lurking just beyond the tree line. These aren't just isolated incidents—they're part of a pattern stretching across the state, from the Uwharrie National Forest to the Blue Ridge Mountains. But the mysteries don't stop in the woods. Off the coast, the Outer Banks are known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, where more than 2,000 ships have met their end. Some of them, according to legend, never left. We explore the chilling stories of North Carolina's ghost ships, like the Carroll A. Deering, found run aground in 1921 with its entire crew vanished. And then there's the Flaming Ship of Ocracoke, a phantom vessel said to appear in flames before vanishing into thin air. Then come the booms. Along these same shores, locals have heard thunderous explosions for centuries—sounds that rattle homes, shake the ground, and leave no physical trace. They call them the Seneca Guns. Are they earthquakes? Underwater landslides? Something stranger? No one knows. But the booms keep coming. And just when you think it can't get any stranger, we dig into North Carolina's werewolf legends. From the colonial era to the present day, there are stories of shapeshifters, half-human beasts, and howls that don't belong to any known predator. Whether they're European legends brought over by settlers or something older and native to these lands, the werewolves of North Carolina still haunt the edges of local lore. From swamp monsters and Sasquatch to ghost ships, phantom booms, and werewolves—this is North Carolina like you've never heard it before. If you're loving these stories, here's what to do next:Follow and subscribe to the show.Turn on auto-downloads so you never miss an episode.Leave a rating and review—it helps more people find us, and we appreciate it.Most importantly, tell your friends, family, and co-workers. “B” is for Bishopville (Lee County; 2020 population 2,994).
On June 29, 1988, around 2:30 a.m., Christopher "Chris" Davis drove home after working the night shift at his local McDonald's. Driving along Browntown Road, which cuts through the dense woods of Scape Ore Swamp in South Carolina, Chris hears the pop of a flat tire on his car. As he finishes installing the spare, he notices something large and dark coming out of the trees, moving towards him about 30 yards away and swinging its arms. In an interview with The Item newspaper, Chris described seeing this humanoid creature with glowing red eyes close up, saying it was "green, wetlike, about seven feet tall and had three fingers... a red-eyed devil." Terrified, Davis ran to the driver's door and jumped in. Once inside, this bipedal beast was now right outside his window, where he could see it from the neck down. It then jumped up onto the roof of his car, where he could see its "rough-looking, black-fingernailed hands, sticking down from the windshield." The cryptid deeply grunts as Chris peels out, attempting to escape. As he estimated he was driving about 35-40 mph, this thing had caught up to the car and jumped onto the roof again, banging and clawing at it. The creature finally fell off as he swerved frantically, racing home. This encounter would become the best-known report of this impossible monster emerging from Scape Ore Swamp, but it was not the first, nor would it be the last. At least one verified account tells of a sighting occurring two years prior, and a handful of police reports describe run-ins that happened in the years following Davis's experience. Chris Davis never called it the "Lizard Man," but residents had already labeled some previously seen brute by that description. And when a local reporter printed the nickname, the moniker stuck in the broader public's imagination. Sheriff Liston Truesdale was the one person who vetted all the claims, took reports from witnesses, and investigated their stories. And we're fortunate and grateful to have on our show tonight the one person who spent time interviewing Sheriff Truesdale, questioned locals, visited locations, and wrote a book about it all, our friend and noted cryptozoology researcher and author Lyle Blackburn. Lyle's 2013 book, Lizard Man: The True Story of the Bishopville Monster, is the phenomenon's most comprehensive and detailed history. As the sightings and questions continue, perhaps the most puzzling and troubling thing is whether everyone sees the same being and whether it is reptilian, more Bigfoot-like, or some other horror altogether. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.
In 1988, the small town of Bishopville was about find itself smack bang in the middle of a monster flap that attracted world wide attention. When locals began reporting some strange reports of damaged vehicles, the authorities appeal for help took a decidely strange turn. What started as some unusual vandalism turned in to a collection of reports of encounters with some chilling and disturbing encounters with a weird bipedal creature lurking near Scape Ore Swamp. Joining me to return to one of his earliest cases is author, researcher and rock god Lyle Blackburn. Lyle covers the witnesses and encounters he covered in his book along with some of the odder aspects to an already odd case. Welcome to Phantoms & Monsters 'Personal Reports' - cryptid & unexplained accounts directly from the archives of Phantoms & Monsters, and the Phantoms & Monster Fortean Research team. Narrated by Lon Strickler. Join us in the chat, discuss, and ask me questions about the accounts. Featured in this edition: All great legends are based on a real event. Subsequent events simply add to the legend. This seems to be the case for the Lizard Man of the Scape Ore Swamp, a phenomenon that crescendoed into a national story. It remains the namesake for the small town of Bishopville, South Carolina. I will talk about that incident during the presentation. But is the lizard man or reptoid phenomenon a reality? Is it a figment of someone's imagination... or is it a flesh & blood, corporeal being? I have received hundreds of accounts from experiencers over several decades. Every account is different, some more terrifying than others. I'll let you decide whether these are extraterrestrial or interdimensional humanoids... or a species of cryptid that occasionally makes itself known to unsuspecting witnesses. So, listen to the reports, and form your conclusions about what these Lizard beings are. If you have questions, feel free to post them in the live chat. I will do my best to answer everyone. Hi. A terrible creature is in Scape Ore Swamp, just outside of Bishopville, South Carolina, and it has terrified the area off and on for almost 40 years. With reports ranging from a vicious attack on a teenager in the dead of night to multiple family vehicles being destroyed while they sleep. This particular swamp is rich in lore and history. But something out there may be more than just a legend. Today, we dive into the path of the Bishopville Lizard Man! Welcome back to Infinite Rabbit Hole InfiniteRabbitHole.com
My special guest tonight is author and cryptozoologist Lyle Blackburn who's here to discuss an upright walking creature that resembles a lizard terrorizing a town in South Carolina. From the swamplands near Bishopville, South Carolina, come reports of a seven-foot-tall, scaly humanoid creature the locals call the "Lizard Man." Over the years, the creature has been seen by numerous witnesses, including a teenager who claimed it attacked him one night near a remote area called Scape Ore Swamp. The young man's testimony and physical evidence was so compelling, it not only launched a serious investigation by the local sheriff's office but an all-out monster hunt that drew hundreds of people to the small town. This real-life "creature from the black lagoon" has inspired major national news coverage, even a call from the famous CBS news anchor, Dan Rather, as he and the rest of the world clamored to know more about Bishopville's elusive monster. The case is often mentioned in books, websites, and television shows, but the full story has never been told... until now. This book provides unprecedented documentation for one of the most bizarre and hair-raising cases of an unknown creature. The witnesses are convinced they've seen it, and the local law officials are backing them up. This is their story. Follow Lyle Blackburn, author of the bestselling book "The Beast of Boggy Creek," as he and his partner, Cindy Lee, revisit the sighting locations, speak to the living eyewitnesses, and consider all possible theories in their search for the truth behind the legendary Lizard Man.It's super easy to access our archives! Since the late 1980s, South Carolina folklore has told of cryptid known as The Lizardman of Bishopville. It started with an investigation of a car that had been mauled, with teeth and claw marks, muddy footprints, and even blood left behind. Over the years sightings of the Lizardman began to grow and coalesced into a legend bigger than the state itself. But one question remains… where did it come from? Oprah, Wall Street Journal, LA Times ~ My interview with Pearl Fryar is inspiring & the documentary is a must see. The Bill and Melinda gates Foundation supports his story, Oprah & many others major media reviews do also. not to mention the millions who visit is nursery from all over the world.Pearl Fryar started making his Topiary Garden in 1984 in a successful bid to win a prestigious local competition. He taught himself to prune and shape the trees and shrubs he had planted in his 3 acre garden, using a petrol-driven hedge trimmer and starting with a few plants. Working from his imagination, Fryar coaxed over 100 specimens of more than 20 different trees and plants, including holly, yew and juniper, into fantastic shapes, hearts, animals and abstract forms.Pearl has passed his art on to a NEW Generation of topiary Artists to maintain his Garden.EVEN Today, it is a National Tourist Attraction!!When Pearl Fryar and his wife sought to buy a house in an all-white neighborhood of Bishopville, SC, they were dissuaded with the explanation that Black people don t keep up their yards. Remarkably, instead of fueling bitterness and anger, this comment motivated Pearl to win Bishopville's Yard of the Month award and, eventually, to transform his ordinary suburban yard into a horticultural wonderland. The topiary garden s centerpiece emblazons both its message and Pearl s own philosophy: Love, Peace, and Goodwill.Pearl Fryar is an African-American born in Clinton, North Carolina, Pearl was the son of a sharecropper. Since the early 1980s, Pearl Fryar has been creating fantastic topiary at his garden in Bishopville, South Carolina. Living sculptures, Pearl s topiaries are astounding feats of artistry and horticulture. Many of the plants in Pearl s garden were rescued from the compost pile at local nurseries. With Pearl s patience and skilled hands, these throw aways have thrived and have been transformed into wonderful abstract shapes. Pearl Fryar and his garden are now internationally recognized and have been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, television shows, and even a documentary, A Man Named Pearl. Today, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden draws visitors from around the globe.Visitors to the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden experience a place that is alternately beautiful, whimsical, educational, and inspiring. Pearl s garden contains over 300 individual plants, and few are spared from his skilled trimming. His extraordinary topiary is complemented by his junk art sculptures placed throughout the garden. Pearl s garden is a living testament to one man s firm belief in the results of positive thinking, hard work, and perseverance, and his dedication to spreading a message of love, peace, and goodwill.A MAN NAMED PEARL chronicles the story of Pearl s magical garden as well as his extraordinary life, both of which serve as inspirations to his family, his community, and the thousands of visitors who come to experience Pearl s world each year. The film traces Pearl s journey from a small town sharecropper s son to an internationally-acclaimed artist, focusing in particular on his position as the celebrated cultural and spiritual icon of his impoverished town. Now 68, the soft-spoken Pearl has just one wish for all those who wander through his living art; they must leave feeling differently than when they arrived."It's the one time in my life ignorance paid off," chuckles Pearl Fryar, a humble man with no eduction in horticulture who, after years of dedicated work, created an astonishing garden in the economically depressed town of Bishopville, S.C. But A Man Named Pearl doesn't just wander among the three acres of Fryar's beautifully sculpted trees and bushes, all created from plants Fryar rescued from the scrap heaps of local nurseries. The documentary shows how his singular vision spread out to affect the community, leading to Fryar being commissioned by art museums and turning Bishopville into a topiary mecca. But despite reviving the economic fortunes of the town, getting national recognition and free food from his local waffle house, and even becoming an unlikely sex symbol, Fryar remains thoughtful, warm, and dynamic, eager to help students and troubled youth discover their unexplored potential. A Man Named Pearl carefully balances the mysteries of the creative impulse with the fundamental humaneness of this outsider artist, resulting in an engaging, rewarding portrait--a perfect midpoint between The Parrots of Telegraph Hill and Crumb.© 2023 Building Abundant Success!!2023 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
The Lizard Man stands at 7ft tall, is humanoid, has an appetite for cars and is a resident of Bishopville, SC. Maybe, we can get him off of cars and onto Bojangles if we meet him.
Over 30 years ago, a young man got a flat tire while driving near Scape Ore Swamp. A large, green, lizard-like creature emerged from the shadows and viciously attacked his car as he drove away. Many others have claimed encounters with the legendary Lizard Man, leaving a mark on the small, agricultural town of Bishopville. On this episode of "South of Spooky," join hosts Gavin Jackson and A.T. Shire as they explore this local legend and try to track down the Lizard Man.
In the summer of 1988, reports of a scaly, humanoid creature known as the "Lizard Man” began to pour out of the murky swamplands surrounding the small town of Bishopville, South Carolina. As residents came forward telling of their frightening encounters, the local sheriff and the media became involved in what would become one of the most documented and bizarre monster mystery cases in modern history.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/monstro-bizarro/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
The tale of this cryptid took off in 1988 and soon stories swarmed media sources of sightings and the damage and destruction caused by the Lizardman himself. After decades of sightings and even possible photographs and video footage, locals can't help but wonder if the Lizard Man is truly haunting the Scape Ore swamp of Bishopville, SC.
The Lizard Man story is 34 years old this month. Bishopville's embrace of the legend is still in its early days. In this episode Post and Courier photographer Andrew Whitaker and projects reporter Thad Moore spoke with many people from the town and Lizard Man enthusiasts. One person they talked with, Robert Howell, grew up in nearby Timmonsville. Howell is known for his early illustrations and Lizard Man comics in the summer on 1988. Howell tells the story of Christopher Davis, a 17-year-old who became famous after an encounter with the creature. Davis had stopped to change a tire along Browntown Road after leaving a night shift at a local fast food restaurant. Then he saw a 7-foot creature with scaly skin and glowing red eyes.More coverage:Return of the Lizard Man: Bishopville's journey to reclaim an SC monsterVideo: South Carolina's Lizard Man story of Christopher DavisPhotos: The Lizard Man Stomp in BishopvilleThis is the first episode of a four-part bonus series from Understand SC.Understand SC is a weekly podcast from The Post and Courier that draws from the reporting resources and knowledge of our newsroom to help you better understand South Carolina. Some of the most notorious Urban Legends across the globe involve creatures known as cryptids. Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster, and the Yeti fall under this umbrella. There are numerous encounters with these monsters dating back hundreds of years, including one such creature that is said to terrorize the town of Bishopville, South Carolina. Scape Ore Swamp is said to be home to a 7ft tall bipedal lizard creature that is known to be extremely vicious. It attacks vehicles driving through this section of South Carolina with numerous first hand encounters dating all the back to the early 1900s. This creature is witnessed as being very territorial and it has even been known to kill. Join Tyler and Ryan as they uncover the secrets to this legend and discuss how horrifying this creature is known to be.
There was a moment when Mark Long had decided he didn't want to live with the effects of his PTSD any longer. He had been a police officer for 15 years and the trauma had piled up inside to where he needed help. And he was eventually able to find a program in California that saved his life through peer counselling and support. From that, Cracked Armour clothing was born to raise awareness of PTSD and those still struggling. That project has led him to buying a house on an acreage in the Annapolis Valley that will be known as Returning Warriors Ranch. Eventually, it too will be a place for first responders to go for support and healing. And to help with that dream, this Sunday, June 5th, will be the first Annual Mental Health Conference. Mark says a lot of the response so far has been from family and friends of the people who are dealing with PTSD. And it's helping him as he shares his story of addictions and healing from the trauma he's witnessed as a police officer.
Hello, I'm Amanda McNutly with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. As a young child, I began using U S C's McKissick Museum - at that time it was a library. Today its mission statement includes these words “The University of South Carolina's McKissick Museum fosters awareness and appreciation for the diversity of the region's culture, history, and natural environment.” When the state of Pearl Fryar's topiary garden and Mr. Fryar's health was brought to director Jane Przybysz attention, she began work on a way to preserve this regional and national treasure. Eventually, with cooperation with the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the museum got funding for a topiary artist in residence – I'm sure that's a first, and Mike Gibson, a self-taught and self-described property artist, is working with Fryar in his Bishopville garden. McKissick is to me an overlooked treasure for our state, please visit it on the old horseshoe.
When Pearl Fryar was transferred from being a plant manager up north to being an assistant plant manager in Bishopville, he was unable to buy property or a house in many parts of town. Despite these slights, he eventually turned his landscape on the outskirts of Bishopville into a topiary garden celebrated internationally. The theme of his garden was and is to this day love and open to one and all. He also supported scholarships for average students who otherwise wouldn't have gotten higher education. His ability to spot potential even had him retrieving plants that had been discarded from nurseries and giving them new life in his garden.
Team Making It Grow traveled to Charleston recently to the small garden behind St. John's Reformed Episcopal Church. During a Spoleto outreach project many years ago, this garden showcasing two of national artists' unique skills was installed. A master of iron work design and craftsmanship, Phillip Simmons, created unique and appropriate gates and wall openings. Topiary artist Pearl Fryar designed a small but exquisite example of his unique artistry. A committee of the Garden Club of Charleston has been tending this garden but recently took lessons in Fryar's techniques from Mike Gibson to learn some of the specific techniques. The McKissick Museum at U S C got a grant to hire Mike Gibson, a self-described property artist, to work and learn from Fryar in his Bishopville garden, as that world-renowned topiary artist is aging and limited in his activities.
On Season 2, Episode 3 of The Terror Talks, we are going to be talking about the Seasonal Haunts that we got to experience over the past couple of months. We've been able to go to Haunted Attractions for Christmas, Valentine's Day, and even St. Patrick's Day. Our experiences at these haunts included many of our favorite locations that we experienced during the Halloween season. First, we attended Kreepy Hollow for their "Curse of the Irish" event. Additionally, our friends at Nightmare Dungeon and Containment Haunted House had their St. Patrick's Day events, but we unfortunately were not able to experience those. Then we got to experience four Valentine's themed haunts - Paranoia Haunted House: "A Valentine's Day Nightmare", Folklore Haunted House: "My Bloody Valentine Tainted Love", Containment Haunted House: "One Killer Date", and Nightmare Dungeon: "Nightmare Valentine's" Each of these attractions had some moments that set them apart, but also some moments that set them back. Join us as we discuss each of the haunts in depth and let you know the things we loved, the things we hated, and the things we want to see. All of this on Season 2, Episode 3 of The Terror Talks!! Working from his imagination, Fryar coaxed over 100 specimens of more than 20 different trees and plants, including holly, yew and juniper, into fantastic shapes, hearts, animals and abstract forms.Today, it is a National Tourist Attraction!!When Pearl Fryar and his wife sought to buy a house in an all-white neighborhood of Bishopville, SC, they were dissuaded with the explanation that Black people don t keep up their yards. Remarkably, instead of fueling bitterness and anger, this comment motivated Pearl to win Bishopville's Yard of the Month award and, eventually, to transform his ordinary suburban yard into a horticultural wonderland. Just about everyone from the Palmetto State can tell you about the tall, scaly creature that enjoys destroying automobiles. Christopher Davis was the first to report the sightings of a half man/half lizard creature back in 1988. Since then, it has been a staple of the community in Bishopville, SC. Not everyone is sure of the cryptid's existence, but those attending it's annual festival say otherwise. On Episode 44 of The Terror Talks, we are bringing you another Double Feature as we review Cedar Creek Haunted House & Hall of Horrors Haunted House for their 2021 Season! On Friday, October 1st, Cedar Creek opened their doors to their first unsuspecting victims for the 2021 Haunt Season, which would feature a haunted trail and maze all wrapped up into one!! This was our first time attending this attraction as last year we did not manage to make it out there. This house was sort of off the radar and not advertised as much as we believe it should have been! Luckily for us, when you arrived in Bishopville, SC, there were several signs pointing to 3 different haunted houses, “Scream Acres” and “Kreepy Hollow” on one side, and then on the other side the mysterious house “Cedar Creek Haunted House”. We were so caught off guard by this as it never appeared in any of our online searches for haunted, but we were instantly intrigued and had already had several letdowns that evening, so we figured we'd give Bishopville a chance to redeem themselves by attending. On Friday, October 1st, Hall of Horrors opened their doors to their first unsuspecting victims for the 2021 Haunt Season with the theme “Blood Moon Rising” Our walk-through haunted house-style attraction is recommended for ages 12 and up, but parental guidance is suggested. All proceeds benefit local and state charities, including SC Jaycee Camp Hope, a camp experience designed for children and adults with learning disabilities and special needs. Camp Hope is located on Lake Hartwell in upstate South Carolina. Other charities that the CWC Jaycees contribute to include the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Hidden Wounds, the Wounded Warrior Project, the FealGood Foundation, SisterCare, Families Helping Families, and Harvest Hope. This year we have a brand new rating scale for the houses we're visiting. All the houses that we'll be reviewing this year will be rated on the Scream Scale! With this, we will evaluate each haunt's Sets, Costumes/Makeup/SFX, Technical Effects, Scares, Pacing, and Actors on a scale of 1-5 Screams. The average number of screams will determine our ranking for the haunts!! Want to participate at home? You can rate these houses as well and send in your thoughts and ratings!! Wall Street Journal , LA Times, OWN ~ It's Earth Day 2021!! Pearl Fryar is my Guest. His inspiring Life & Documentary is a must see. The Bill and Melinda gates Foundation supports his story, Oprah & many others major media reviews do also, not to mention the millions who visit is nursery from all over the world. The Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, in Bishopville, South Carolina, is a three-acre garden with a purpose. Its development is a story of plants, sculpture, community, hard work, and inspiration. Self-taught and armed with a hedge trimmer, Fryar worked for more than 20 years to create and maintain remarkable and dazzling topiaries from plants that were often salvaged from a local nursery. When Pearl Fryar and his wife sought to buy a house in an all-white neighborhood of Bishopville, SC, they were dissuaded with the explanation that Black people don t keep up their yards. But A Man Named Pearl doesn't just wander among the three acres of Fryar's beautifully sculpted trees and bushes, all created from plants Fryar rescued from the scrap heaps of local nurseries. A Man Named Pearl carefully balances the mysteries of the creative impulse with the fundamental humaneness of this outsider artist, resulting in an engaging, rewarding portrait--a perfect midpoint between The Parrots of Telegraph Hill and Crumb. © 2021 Building Abundant Success!! 2021 All Rights Reserved Join Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBAS Spot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23ba
The Road Trip continues as we arrive in Bishopville, South Carolina, home of the Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp. This cryptid stalked the backroads of Bishopville back in the late 80's, destroying and chasing cars, but did it disappear after 1988 or does it still lurk in the shadows?
"B" is for Bishopville [Lee County; population 3,670]. Bishopville, the seat of Lee County, traces its origins to prehistoric days when two Indian trails crossed near the future site of the town. European settlement began in the late 18th century and, for a time was known as Singleton’s Cross Roads. In 1821 Dr. Jacques Bishop purchased property in the area and operated a general store—by the late 1830s the little settlement was called Bishopville. The town has also served as a business and cultural center throughout its existence. Two blocks of Main Street are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1900 Opera House is now a community events center. In 1994 Bishopville opened the South Carolina Cotton Museum as a center to interpret the cotton heritage of the town and Lee County.
Scape Ore Swamp has a history of secrets dating back as far as the American Revolution. But in 1988, the first sightings of the Lizard Man turned the small city of Bishopville on its head, and bring the world to its front door. Tonight we take a look at what took place and how this cryptid would eventually draw the attention of everyone from skeptics to Stephen Colbert. -------------------------------Instagram: @uncannyamericaTwitter: @Uncanny_America------------------------------Nervous by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4118-nervousLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Gypsy Shoegazer No Voices by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/3840-gypsy-shoegazer-no-voicesLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Special guest Robert Howell’s talks about the legendary Lizard man of Bishopville Sc
Follow Lyle Blackburn, author of the bestselling book "The Beast of Boggy Creek," as he and his partner, Cindy Lee, revisit the sighting locations, speak to the living eyewitnesses, and consider all possible theories in their search for the truth behind the legendary Lizard Man. He's the business owner of Trancendence, Inc. which offers counseling, coaching, and consulting services. He is the author of three novels, Closure, Getting Closure and In the Moment. In this episode, Aaron provides us with his perspective about justice in America for Blacks from his personal point of view as well as his clinical point of view. Some of the topics that we discussed included, historically black folks have been sharing stories about racial injustices in the criminal justice system for years but people didn't see it, so they couldn't identify with it. No one who could see and have a heart could watch the video of George Floyd being murdered and not be affected by what they saw.He shares that one of the reasons why racism remains a problem in this country is because no one wants to talk about it. He provides us with clear steps for Blacks and those who seek to be our ally's as to how to go about striking up these conversations. He shares his experience of counseling prisoners at the Lee County Prison in Bishopville, SC, and how his conversations with these men many of whom had been imprisoned between the ages of 17-19 years old were some of the most intellectual conversations he has had which had a major impact on him.We discuss the business of the prison industry and the correlation of the fact that 80% of those who are incarcerated are blacks when we only represent 13% of the U.S. population and how this fact is another form of slavery that is legal based on the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In this conversation, we take listeners on an insightful voyage as we dig deep, come up for air with experiences from back in the day to the funny moments and the challenging moments. Two years ago today, America's deadliest outbreak of prison violence in 25 years broke out at a maximum-security prison in South Carolina. The public was told very little about what happened that night, so the Post and Courier set out to change that. The resulting project, which was published in December, exposed flaws in the state's prison system that lead to the deaths of seven inmates in one night at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville. If you haven't read the story yet, we recommend you check it out before listening. Read the story here. The piece recently won two national journalism awards: a first-place honor in the Scripps Howard Awards for Distinguished Service to the First Amendment and another first place win in the annual IRE Awards recognizing outstanding investigative work.Project reporters Jennifer Berry Hawes and Stephen Hobbs joined us for a behind-the-scenes look at their eight-month-long reporting process. They, along with reporters Glenn Smith and Seanna Adcox, collected thousands of pages of documents, interviewed more than 150 people and wrote to about 400 inmates. They explain how, with very little information publicly available, they were able to piece together what happened that night on Lee's dangerous West Yard. Listen to find out.

In mythology Many cultures have legends of creatures which are part human and part reptile. One of the first historical depictions of a reptilian humanoid was the Ancient Egyptian deity Sobek, who had the head of a crocodile. He was depicted with similar traits, such as being aggressive and animalistic. In South Asian and Southeast Asian mythology, the Nāga are semi-divine creatures which are half-human and half-serpent.[1] In folklore Sightings of humanoid reptile cryptids are common in the Southern United States, where swamps are common. In the late 1980s, there were hundreds of supposed sightings of a "Lizard Man" in Bishopville, South Carolina.[2] Origins Michael Barkun, professor of political science at Syracuse University, posits that the idea of a reptilian conspiracy originated in the fiction of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard. The first appearance of "serpent men" in literature was in Howard's story "The Shadow Kingdom", published in Weird Tales in August 1929. This story drew on theosophical ideas of the "lost worlds" of Atlantis and Lemuria, particularly Helena Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine written in 1888, with its reference to "'dragon-men' who once had a mighty civilization on a Lemurian continent".[8] Howard's "serpent men" were described as humanoids (with human bodies and snake heads) who were able to imitate humans at will, and who lived in underground passages and used their shapechanging and mind-control abilities to infiltrate humanity.[9] Alien abduction Alien abduction narratives sometimes allege contact with reptilian creatures.[14] One of the earliest reports was that of Ashland, Nebraska police officer Herbert Schirmer (born 1945), who under hypnosis recalled being taken aboard a UFO in 1967 by humanoid beings with a slightly reptilian appearance, who wore a "winged serpent" emblem on the left side of their chests.[15][16] Skeptics consider his claims to be a hoax.[17] David Icke According to British conspiracy theorist David Icke[when?], tall, blood-drinking, shape-shifting reptilian humanoids from the Alpha Draconis star system, now hiding in underground bases, are the force behind a worldwide conspiracy against humanity.[18] He contends that most of the world's ancient and modern leaders are related to these reptilians, including the Merovingian dynasty, the Rothschilds, the Bush family and the British Royal family.[19] Icke's conspiracy theories now have supporters in up to 47 countries and he has given lectures to crowds of up to 6,000.[20][21] Taylor Swift Is Part of the Reptilian Race and Her Recent Social Media Posts Prove It by Anna Cieslik Aug 23, 2017 Link: https://www.dailybreak.com/break/taylor-swift-is-in-the-reptilian-race-heres-why For those who don't spend their weekends binge watching "Ancient Aliens" and reading self-published conspiracy theory books, the Reptilian race might be a foreign concept. Hina and the Moon is a nature origin myth from what is now called Hawaii. It is one of many stories about Hina, who in some cases is a goddess and in others an ordinary woman. Sometimes she is married to Maui, and others not. Sometimes she goes to the moon, and other times she doesn't. We decided to have her take a trip to the moon, because this year is the 50th anniversary of the first Apollo moon landing, and libraries will be celebrating it this summer. Accordingly, we'll be having Hina take a trip to the moon on stage when we perform. We come to you from Charleston, SC, having just performed at the Charleston Museum, the oldest museum in the country, for its 246th birthday. We've also been touring Myrtle Beach, where we learned to do an old dance called the Carolina shag. And in the town of Bishopville, we visited the amazing topiary garden that has been maintained for nearly 4 decades by a man named Pearl Fryar. Our 2019 is off to a great start. Hope yours is too. Happy listening, Dennis (Narrator, Man, Maui, Moon) and Kimberly (Hina, Woman, Narrator)
Oprah, Wall Street Journal,LA Times ~ My interview with Pearl Fryar is inspiring & the documentary is a must see. The Bill and Melinda gates Foundation supports his story, Oprah & many others major media reviews do also. not to mention the millions who visit is nursery from all over the world. When Pearl Fryar and his wife sought to buy a house in an all-white neighborhood of Bishopville, SC, they were dissuaded with the explanation that Black people don t keep up their yards. Remarkably, instead of fueling bitterness and anger, this comment motivated Pearl to win Bishopville's Yard of the Month award and, eventually, to transform his ordinary suburban yard into a horticultural wonderland. The topiary garden s centerpiece emblazons both its message and Pearl s own philosophy: Love, Peace, and Goodwill. Pearl Fryar is an African-American born in Clinton, North Carolina, Pearl was the son of a sharecropper. Today, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden draws visitors from around the globe. Visitors to the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden experience a place that is alternately beautiful, whimsical, educational, and inspiring. Pearl s garden contains over 300 individual plants, and few are spared from his skilled trimming. His extraordinary topiary is complemented by his junk art sculptures placed throughout the garden. Pearl s garden is a living testament to one man s firm belief in the results of positive thinking, hard work, and perseverance, and his dedication to spreading a message of love, peace, and goodwill. A MAN NAMED PEARL chronicles the story of Pearl s magical garden as well as his extraordinary life, both of which serve as inspirations to his family, his community, and the thousands of visitors who come to experience Pearl s world each year. The film traces Pearl s journey from a small town sharecropper s son to an internationally-acclaimed artist, focusing in particular on his position as the celebrated cultural and spiritual icon of his impoverished town. Now 68, the soft-spoken Pearl has just one wish for all those who wander through his living art; they must leave feeling differently than when they arrived. "It's the one time in my life ignorance paid off," chuckles Pearl Fryar, a humble man with no eduction in horticulture who, after years of dedicated work, created an astonishing garden in the economically depressed town of Bishopville, S.C. A Man Named Pearl carefully balances the mysteries of the creative impulse with the fundamental humaneness of this outsider artist, resulting in an engaging, rewarding portrait--a perfect midpoint between The Parrots of Telegraph Hill and Crumb. © 2018 Building Abundant Success!! 2018 All Rights Reserved Join Me on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/BuildingAbundantSuccess

Pearl Fryar http://www.pearlfryar.com/ was born in Clinton, North Carolina, to a sharecropper family. He worked as an engineer at a can factory in Bishopville, South Carolina until his retirement in 2006. Around 1988, he began trimming the evergreen plants around his yard into unusual shapes. In addition to the boxwood and yew found there originally, he began transplanting holly, fir, loblolly pine and other plants as they became available. His living sculptures are astounding feats of artistry and horticulture. Pearl Fryar and his garden are now internationally recognized and have been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, television shows, and even a documentary. Even more incredible than what he created, is the story of its beginnings. Many of the plants in Pearl’s garden were rescued from the compost pile at local nurseries. With Pearl’s patience and skilled hands, these “throw aways” have thrived and have been transformed into wonderful abstract shapes. When he began working, the “experts” told him that he couldn’t do what he was trying to do with what he had. Ignoring the advice of these experts, he followed his dream. He said that he was determined to not let obstacles get in the way of what he was trying to do. In our text, we are told the story of a gardener who worked for a landowner. One of the plants under his care, was a fig tree that was not bearing fruit. The owner came by expecting a return on his investment. Seeing no evidence that this fig tree was producing, he ordered the gardener to cut the tree down. However the gardner pleads for one more year. The owner had no idea that fig trees took at least three years to bear fruit, but the gardner knew. The gardner knew this and was unwilling to give up on the tree so that it could reach its potential. Sitting in this congregation today are people who are not living up to our potential. Thank God for someone who is tending to us who is not willing to give up on us. Some would want to cut the unproductive trees down and cast them to the trash heap. God knows our potential and continues to work on us until He can get out of us what He knows is inside us. Some have written themselves off just like that land owner wrote off that fig tree. God doesn’t look at us like that. God’s love, compassion and mercy overcomes all of that and saw something better than we or others see. Thank God for the Value of Someone Who Cares.

The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp The Lizard Man is a reptilian humanoid cryptid found in the bowels of…
1988 brought some strange times to the sleepy South Carolina town of Bishopville. Out of the warm waters of the Scape Ore Swamp came tales of a creature that would forever rewrite the history of this area and many of it's residents. The Lizard Man is a cryptid straight from science fiction but to those who encountered this scary unknown biped, it was a case of Unexplained Reality!
Back in 1988 a Half-man, half-lizard began chewing up cars in a swampy old town in South Carolina. Residents dubbed the creature as a Lizard Man! And Lizardmania swept the town. Before long everyone was talking about that lizard, they were printing shirts, making hats, calling the TV and keeping an eye on their cars as they drove passed the Lee County swamps. But was it just a bear doing normal bear things? Was it just a bean growing old man trying to protect his air conditioners? Or was it just a kid who was high after working at McDonalds? Oprah's OWN, The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living & L.A Times are some of the places you have seen Pearl's Topiary Garden featured . He has even been a keynote speaker at Harvard University, the inspiration in the documentary "A Man Named Pearl" & a film short funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation called "Planting Hope". Pearl once stated, "According to the book I would have thrown it out, but I didn't know anything about the book," "I didn't even know what topiary was." The most education he received was a three minute overview on a small topiary plant he purchased. Amazingly done freehand with no forms to start his fascinating works of art. He is known internationally in the world of gardens and art. His story is an example of what can happen when you try something new and discover hidden talent beyond imagination. For the past 25 years, he has taken the world of topiaries to heights never imagined before. Starting by taking plants no one, not even the professionals thought were anything more than trash. Transforming them into a work of art through a labor of patience, love and determination. He looked at the potential of the plant and nurtured each one. He has taken risks and developed new techniques to tame trees. He has been featured in the documentary: 'A Man Named Pearl'. Thousands visits his garden yearly. There are 150 topiaries on his three acre property, comprised of 400 different plants. His topiaries can be seen all around Bishopville. He started with the 'Yard of the Month' award to numerous articles in national newspapers and magazines and appearances on national television. Recently Pearl's Topiary Garden has been designated a Preservation Project of the Garden Conservancy. It is a 501C3 Foundation. Pearl Fryar believes strongly in the role higher education can play in breaking the cycle of poverty in rural communities. He tells visitors to the garden that he believes a student’s academic performance does not always reflect potential for success. To realize Pearl’s objective of helping the average student to succeed, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, Inc. contributes to scholarship funds at Central Carolina Technical College in Bishopville, South Carolina and at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Scholarships are awarded to students who might not have done well in high school but who nevertheless show "potential." ~ PearlFryar.com © Building Abundant Success!! 2014 All Rights Reserved See you on my New Facebook Page ~ facebook.com/BuildingAbundantSuccess
