“I'm chasing a lot of things and I just find that that keeps me going. That keeps me motivated. That's what makes me want to keep going and striving for more. And then the more I start to change and I can start to see the change in those around me, drives me even more to wanna keep changing because it's really cool when you can share something with someone and then you start to see that they're making changes in their life. And that's a really, really, really big motivator for me is to have that I influence and that effect and that impact and in someone else's life.”Episode #121 of The Hope Initiative with Ebany Vanderheym.Stoked to have Ebany Vanderheym on the podcast this week, who as it turns out is someone is a fan of the podcast - more than I realised prior to the chat.Having met Ebany through Feel Good Dips and the community of great humans that frequent that space over the past year or so, it was only a matter of time I had her on for a chat after many great ones in person. In this conversation, we chat a host of things including physical challenges, running a marathon with her mouth taped shut and full nasal breathing, obsessions and shifting your mindset.A great conversation! It wouldn't truly be #yaysofourlives if I didn't get our little yaymaker Angelena Roan to jump on for an episode. I've been getting so many lovely messages about how these tangential banter sessions have been helping you guys keep smiling, but honestly it's more therapy for me that I just happen to record, so the fact that you're enjoying too is a bonus. You may remember Ang from the VERY first episode of the podcast, her own interview in episode 33 or all over my socials - I've had three messages JUST this week asking about my sister which she is not but which you'd be forgiven for assuming. She's my mini me, best friend and has squeezed more into life at 24 than many do in a lifetime having ridden 800km from Adelaide to Melbourne for charity, started boxing for fun only to win her first fight by TKO, played in the VFLW for North Melbourne, started her own creative agency and now just happens to be a full time Physiotherapist at Royal Melbourne Hospital. We swing from hysterically brainless to deeply philosophical which is one of my favourite things about our friendship and which definitely comes out in this chat today - apologies for the parts that don't make sense to anyone but that we clearly find hilarious. Again for this one, I had no notes at all which I'm loving so much between our regular schedule and hope you enjoy following our crazy brains all over the place. + Follow Ang here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Join our Facebook community here + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!
Lou Wotton is a legend of women's football in Victoria and has trod the well worn path to elite coaching, at Hawthorn in the VFLW. And David Ackerly played almost 200 games of league football for North and Sydney, so why is he making a comeback at the age of 60?
"Obviously not everything's going to be perfect and you're not going to do everything 100% right, all the time. But as long as the intentions there and the goodwills there and you put in the effort where you can and where you need to, then you'll hopefully make a difference to some people." Episode #31 of The Hope Initiative with Amy Malander Amy and I met back in 2006 whilst in year 9 on the netball courts at HE Parker Reserve in Heathmont during an inter school cross country. We've kept in touch over the years thanks to social media, but really it's the first time we've properly chatted as adults. A teacher now herself, we discuss the changes at school since we attended 10 years ago, the challenges kids face these days as well as challenges Amy herself is facing as a young adult doing her best in the world! We also speak on Amys football exploits, as she plays in the VFLW for Collingwood after moving from soccer years ago... A wise choice? Only time will tell ;) She speaks candidly on criticism and online trolling facing women in a sport that has long been dominated by men and how her and her fellow teammates deal with it. Amongst all of that, a key take-away for me is on being mindful and grateful for what you have each and every day. Something that is a practice of Amys. Thanks again to Amy for taking the time! I really enjoyed the chat, I hope you do too! A 500 game Gippsland champ, the start of the VFLW season and Stan Magro...what more could you want?!
I finally convinced the mysterious Ang (spelling debated in the episode haha) to come on the show and tell her story. I've had so many requests to hear from Ang so here she is in all her hilarious glory. While we have heard from many incredible guests who are well on their way to seizing their yay, Ang is just 22 and at the very beginning of her journey so I thought it would make for something a little different to have a younger guest on the show. Having said that, she has nonetheless squeezed more into her life than people decades older than her which is part of what makes her so interesting. While she is studying physio full time at uni and absolutely loves all things science and anatomy, she has also built and recently sold her own food truck business, created a solo charity ride from Adelaide to Melbourne covering 800km on her bicycle to raise $22,000 for Stand Up Events combating homophobia and discrimination, started boxing from scratch and trained for her first fight where she won by technical knock out after just 1 and a half rounds, tried out for fun but successfully been listed in the VFLW for this year, worked across many different businesses and industries now going freelance in creative and digital marketing and that's just half of it. You can see why she's such a motivating and life loving person to be around. While we met through our businesses, she is one of our closest friends and a human ray of sunshine. You can tell we get a bit off track from time to time probably forgetting we were recording and not just chatting between mates, but hopefully you enjoy nonetheless. + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!
