15 year olds, Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock, were the best of friends. When both girls were found murdered in January of 1965, Australia was rocked. Despite it largest investigation in Australian history, the case went cold. Coni takes you through this week's episode.
This week we dive back into true crime. First we head to Australia for the horrific murder of two young girls, Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock. This sadly unsolved case took place in 1965 when two girls who went to the beach with family never returned home. There was a few suspects but to this date it remains unsolved. The second case branches off of the first case, as Christopher Wilder was a suspect in the Wanda Beach case, amongst many other cases all leading up to a large murder spree across America. He's known as The Beauty Queen Killer and The Snapshot Killer. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/support

In 1969 Derek Percy was arrested for the brutal killing of 12 year old Yvonne Tuohy. While he was held responsible for that crime, a string of unsolved heinous child murders in the 60s bear chilling resemblance to that violent crime that put him behind bars. But Derek Percy never confessed to, nor was he convicted of the crimes he's strongly suspected of having committed. He died in custody in 2013 as Victoria's longest serving prisoner, taking to the grave all his secrets. Depriving families of the closure they'd spent decades longing for. Alan Whitaker, our guest today, spent 4 years researching Percy trying to fill in the blanks that Derek never would. Rob and Arlo tackle another killer from down under. Christopher Wilder AKA the Beauty Queen Killer started his tour of terror in Australia. Once a suspect in the Wanda Beach Murders, Wilder moves to the US, Florida area and starts stalking young, aspiring models. Instead of a life of fame and fortune, these girls found themselves kidnapped, raped, and murdered. With his empty promises of modeling contracts, girls willingly jumped into the charismatic, successful, racecar driving psychopath's car never to be heard from again. It was a squally Monday during their school break when 16-year-old Marianne Schmidt and her best friend, Christine Sharrock, hopped a train with Marianne's four younger siblings and headed from West Ryde, Australia, to Wanda Beach. As the younger children sat in the sand and listened to the radio, Marianne and Christine went for a walk. The next day their violated bodies were found in the sand dunes by a group of exploring children. Who raped and murdered Marianne and Christine? Was it the man seen at the beach wearing the corrugated iron mask or the pervert asking beachgoers to look at porno magazines with him? Find out why so many investigators now believe that Derek Percy, Australia's "Hannibal Lector", may be responsible for the crime. We are starting off the new year with a wild story. This episode came about when Jess began researching crimes in Australia. With Australia being 2nd to the US as far as listenership for weeks, it was interesting to search out some of the top crimes and criminals that were from that part of the world. The case of the Wanda Beach Murders from the 1960’s stood apart from the rest, but it would lead to so much more.Join us as we discuss cases and crimes that span over 2 decades, and 2 continents, that can all be linked to one disgusting man. Christopher Bernard Wilder. Wilder had perfected his ways of luring beautiful, trusting young women from beaches and malls by presenting himself as a photographer on the hunt for the next big model. Because of this he was dubbed “The Beauty Queen Killer”.His taste for sexual torture and perverted gratification quickly put him on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list in the spring of 1984 as he moved across state lines, abducting young women from mall after mall. The long line of victims would be unknown when all is said and done. The brave women who fought to survive have memories that will never go away of their time with him. The families of the victims he murdered may never have peace. His family, friends and even investigators will have to live with the knowledge that this monster slipped through the cracks and was able to carry on his deviant ways for years without capture. The incredibly twisted story of Christopher Wilder came to an end when he was shot trying to evade capture on Friday, April 13,1984 in New Hampshire. He may be gone, but certainly will never be forgotten. Some information from this episode:Books to read-The Pretty Girl Killer by Andrew BryneThe Beauty Queen Killer by Bruce GibneyDocumentaries to Watch-7 News Spotlight “Wanda Beach Murders”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQDW9pr_KzAThe FBI Files “Christopher Wilder: A Model Killer”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmBXz0Emm38Inside the Rampage of Christopher Wilder:https://allthatsinteresting.com/christopher-wilderCriminal Minds: Christopher Wilder:https://criminalminds.fandom.com/wiki/Christopher_Wilder
There are twists, there are turns, and there are still no answers when it comes to the slayings of Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock, also known as the Wanda Beach Murders. Granted, it would be unlikely to have any answers as the terrible event took place in 1965. However, as we'll discover, there were leads being looked at well into the mid and 2010's. The case shocked the community, and the fact that it was never solved was more or less the first in a string of unsolved crimes, mostly murders, around that time. Some believed that they were connected, some thought some were connected, and others really didn't know either way. This episode looks at the similarities between some of these unsolved crimes, the suspects involved, and some wonderfully botched police work that includes losing more or less the only DNA evidence they recovered and kept. Yay police! I go on a bit of a rant in the episode about it, so I'll save you having to read it too. In the end, it's no real surprise that the case has gone unsolved. From the location, to the time, to the lack of eye-witnesses (though there is one that we'll talk about), it just seemed as though this case was destined to never be solved. Although there were three main suspects in the case, none ever confessed, and two died before charges could ever be laid (granted one was in the 2000's). The police were banking on a confession for these murders, but sadly they never got them. Too often police theorize and stick to one version of whatever story they like as opposed to letting the evidence lead the way. I understand, when there isn't much evidence to go on, sometimes you have to pluck something out of mid-air and hope its right, because if it's wrong, well you've just landed an innocent person behind bars. For all the details regarding this case, be sure to listen not only to this episode, but part one as well. As summer starts to rear its glorious head, we start to long for the sound of the ocean. It’s beach weather folks and with this COVID 19 situation, we have to be extra careful. How about we skip the beach this year? It’s just not safe! This week we share just how safe it’s not. Nydia tells us about the Long Island Serial Killer known in some circles as the Craigslist Killer and the Shannon Gilbert connection. She also shares an interesting update on the still-ongoing investigation. Dana talks about the still-unsolved Wanda Beach Murders. For dinner, we went with seafood. Nydia prepared a delicious and quick garlic butter salmon with asparagus stalks. For dessert, Dana prepared some easy, yet beautiful seashell cookies. We tried Eve Chardonnay, a 2017 Washington wine with a deliciously sweet flavor that paired well with the salmon dish. The Wanda Beach Murders are possibly Australia’s most well-known cold case. The 1965 murder of Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock devastated the nation, and to this day police are still trying to piece together the circumstances of their deaths. In this episode, your girls discuss one of the most likely suspects, a serial killer who travelled across the US, luring girls to their deaths by posing as a photographer. In 1965 though, he was just another Aussie teenager… one who happened to match the description of the only other person seen at the beach when Marianne and Christine were murdered. On the 11 of January 1965, two fifteen year old girls, Marianne Schmidt and Christine Sharrock, went down to spend the day at Wanda Beach in Sydney, and were never seen alive again. Their bodies were found lying on a deserted section of beach, brutally stabbed. The perpetrator has never been caught, and it remains New South Wales' oldest unsolved homicide case.As one of Australia’s most notorious cold cases, many potential suspects have been put forth, both by the police and by armchair detectives. One possible candidate is the Beauty Queen Killer, Christopher Wilder, who killed eight women in a six week long crime spree across the United States. It’s possible we’ll never know who killed Marianne and Christine. But the people of Australia will not let these two girls be forgotten. To read more about Christopher Wilder and his connection to Wanda Beach, go here https://www.theleader.com.au/story/5458975/australian-serial-killer-linked-to-wanda-beach-murders/?fbclid=IwAR0T0Qa1RsXBqdEhGGjWZkSPSE8SaT_GTEEh80Ee4KbxVRPb8N5GPHnKvZ4For some surprisingly good crime journalism considering it's from Mama Mia, go here https://www.mamamia.com.au/wanda-beach-murders/?fbclid=IwAR2Gw3sAqsIWACPxGLz1IhKQwXa1rXPwYtgFak5egauV1amZ4JwfqWDQv9oCatch the episode of Sunday Night here https://au.news.yahoo.com/wanda-beach-murders-part-1-214802595.html?fbclid=IwAR1AbB0caFA5GOQVOZhGEBeOp3Z_Yo1U4LhJsPAtFb7esWECeJ2uRkcwVgMListen to the dulcet tones of Casey Casefile discussing Wanda Beach here https://casefilepodcast.com/case-1-the-wanda-beach-murders/?fbclid=IwAR1wdGF9dEO9b6Fr8ZB_XW6PxsZwaoZhWW1l35CBy9HdFkDR-XmmHJoDQvkFind us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.com
