Reina Carolina Morales Rojas was last seen on Saturday, November 26, 2022 when she left her apartment in her East Boston neighborhood. She was seen getting into a vehicle that was headed to Somerville - reportedly to a friend's house. She is believed to have entered that building on Alston St. That is the extent of what we know. But we didn't know it until she was missing for 45 days. The Boston Police Department would eventually acknowledge their obvious negligence in notifying the public. There was no urgency. Critical time was lost. With insights from Marcela García, the first journalist to report on Reina's case, we navigate the emotional toll on Reina's family and the systemic shortcomings in media coverage and police responses that hinder the search for justice. The initial lack of response to her case, both from the police and the media, is a factor in why it took time for her disappearance to gain wider notice. Reina Carolina had only been in the Boston area for a short time and did not speak English, which may have presented additional challenges in her disappearance. Another missing persons case in the region had taken up the air in the room. Marcela García, Associate Editor and columnist for The Boston Globe, covers a wide range of topics, from public education and immigration policy to social inequities and the Latinx community in Boston and beyond.Marcela GarcíaBoston Globe report on her visit to El Salvador: A heartbreaking visit to the hometown of a missing Boston womanWomen's Media CenterFBIMMMPACSources list at crimeofthetruestkind.comSend a message to the showSupport the showFollow Instagram | Facebook | BlueSky | TikTok | Threads | YouTube For show notes & source information at CrimeoftheTruestKind.comGive the dogs a bone tip jar: buymeacoffee.com/truestkindBecome a patron: Patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkindThis podcast has minimal profanity but from time to time you get one or some curse words. Send us a textVanderhoof, British Columbia—a picturesque town surrounded by dense forests and rugged terrain. It's a place where life moves at a steady, familiar pace and where everyone seems to know each other. But in May 2011, the close-knit community was shaken by the disappearance of a young woman whose vibrant personality and adventurous spirit were the heart of those who knew her.Madison Scott, or Maddy as her loved ones called her, was born on April 29, 1991, to Eldon and Dawn Scott. Growing up alongside her siblings Ben and Georgia, Maddy's life was filled with love, laughter, and a healthy dose of adventure. She was a force of nature, just as comfortable in a dress as she was in her work coveralls. Whether she was tearing through the trails on her dirt bike or gliding gracefully across the ice as a figure skater, Maddy embraced life with boundless energy. She thrived on spontaneity, often planning impromptu adventures or performing in amateur video productions with her friends. Her vivacious, playful personality was magnetic—she lit up every room she entered. But Maddy wasn't just about fun. She had a compassionate and generous heart, always willing to lend a hand or bring a smile to someone's face.At Nechako Valley Secondary School, Maddy struck a delicate balance between academics and her vibrant social life. While she was more focused on forging friendships and savoring her teenage years, she still met the demands of her studies. After graduating in 2009, she followed in her father's footsteps, working as an apprentice heavy-duty mechanic in the logging industry—a testament to her determination and grit. But for all her light and energy, Maddy's story took a dark and inexplicable turn. It was a weekend that was supposed to be filled with laughter, celebration, and friends. Late May in British Columbia marked the start of camping season, a time when locals would gather at places like Hogsback Lake to soak in the beauty of nature. For Madison Scott, or Maddy as her friends and family called her, the weekend of May 27th, 2011, would be one to remember—but not in the way anyone expected.Support the show

Journalist Hedley Thomas grew up knowing that his grandmother Gladys had vanished in the sea off Sydney in the 1950s, when she was just 35 years old. Years later, her story spurred him on to begin a new life as a hugely successful true crime podcasterHedley Thomas has had a storied career in journalism, which has seen him win many Walkley Awards and expose a lot of corruption and dodgy dealings. But it has also placed Hedley and his family in harm's way. In 2002 Hedley and his wife Ruth were at their home when bullets were fired into their bedroom, missing their heads by just centimetres. The shooter was never found, and Hedley grappled with PTSD after the event.A couple of decades later Hedley decided to begin a podcast about a story which had stayed with him for years. It was the about a woman named Lyn who 'went missing' from her home in the Northern Beaches of Sydney in the 1980s, and was never seen again. Hedley's podcast, The Teacher's Pet, became a huge hit. Five years after it began, Lyn's former husband Chris Dawson was convicted of her murder and sentenced to 24 years in jail.Just recently, Hedley has started speaking out about how his commitment to Lyn's story, and to finding justice for her was partly inspired by a tragedy in his own family which occurred decades earlier, just a few kilometres from where Lyn vanished. This episode of Conversations touches on family dynamics, true crime, femicide, domestic violence, family origins, life story, secret family, ancestry, parenting, PTSD, Donald Trump, Hong Kong, London, New York, Australian expats, foreign correspondents, police corruption.Further informationHelp and support is always available. Willie Pickton was only allowed to continue his crimes, to rack up the number of bodies he did, because the government and the police didn't do their jobs, were apathetic to the cries for help coming from the downtown eastside. Today, we have finally reached the conclusion to this chilling story. When we last left off, Willie Pickton was just starting his reign of terror over the women of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Nancy Clark was missing, along with several other women, whose disappearances would never be solved. The Pickton farm was quickly becoming a criminal headquarters, thanks to Dave Pickton's infatuation with the Hell's Angels gang. The Vancouver Police didn't care. The missing women were sex workers and addicts, and therefore, less worthy of effort. The horror of this story is not only the monstrous actions of Willie Pickton, but also the apathy of the same people that were supposed to protect and serve. True Crime Campfire
Less Dead: Serial Killer Robert Willie Pickton, Pt 1

True Crime Campfire

In his book, Encyclopedia of Murder and Violent Crime, Eric Hickey wrote about a type of victim that he called, “the Less Dead”. These are people that are seen by the media or law enforcement as having less value than others. Usually sex workers, drug addicts, houseless people, and sexual or racial minorities. The case we're discussing today is about dozens of these types of victims. Women whose disappearances were ignored or were straight up covered up because they happened to be addicts or sex workers. One police officer told a woman's terrified family that the series of missing women were “just junkies and hookers. Don't waste our time.” These were human beings. With friends and families, hopes, dreams, stories, lives. The fact that the authorities ignored their disappearances for so long is one of the worst miscarriages of justice that we've seen in our decades of true crime study. This killer roamed the streets of Vancouver, like a shark swimming among a school of fish, unchecked and under the radar, taking almost 50 lives before anyone stopped him. Sources:Cameron, Stevie. We dive into the disturbing reality of tr@fficking, especially the crisis of missing Indigenous women in rural America, and why it's not getting the attention it deserves. Nic shares eye-opening insights from his CIA days, debunking myths and exposing the media's role in spreading misinformation. We also touch on his work with GoPills, a nootropic for veterans dealing with traumatic brain injuries, and the importance of principles like reading the Bible and serving others. Over the years, there had been allegations of abuse by other family members. In March 2024, Veronica was only able to see her children via supervised visits due to the allegations. On March 30, Veronica set out with Jilian Kelley to pick up her children to attend a birthday party.  Jilian was an acquaintance who had been allowed by the court to supervise Veronica's visits with her children.   The two women would never arrive to pick up the children.  Their vehicle was found abandoned in a remote area. Pools of blood, a hammer and gun paraphernalia was found at the scene.  Four people have now been arrested in relation to this case.  They are Tad Cullum, Tifany Adams, Cole Twombly, and Cora Twombly.  This case is a very tangled web - Tifany was Veronica's ex-mother-in-law.  The newly released affidavit suggests that the women were murdered because Tifany was concerned that Veronica would soon be granted unsupervised visitation with the kids.   In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the brutal murders of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley. Read our blog for this case We also discuss: OJ Simpson Died The body of missing teen Dylan Rounds has just been recovered.   Dylan's alleged murderer led police to his remains in early April 2024.  Jennifer and James Crumbley, parents of school shooter Ethan Crumbley, have been sentenced for their role in the massacre.  We are now on Patreon!
