**Discussion begins at 7:30**In the late 1990s, Mexican Channel 5 would cut into cartoons and late night shows,  with a solemn voice and grainy black and white photos of missing people who had vanished without a trace.  One of these missing women was Selene Delgado, Lopez.  But decades later, nobody can agree on whether she ever existed.  Was Selene a real 18 year old who disappeared in Mexico City and whose case slipped through the cracks?  Or was she a media fabrication?  After all these years there are no official records, not family testimony, and no confirmed sightings.  And she's not the only one... In the 1980s, Chicago residents remember seeing a grainy black and white photo of another missing woman named Joanna Lopez that would air after the nightly news had wrapped.  But when the internet tried to solve the mystery decades later, things only got stranger. Records were scarce. Police files were practically nonexistent. Was Joanna ever truly reported missing? Was she part of a PSA campaign gone wrong? A broadcasting error? When cold cases are looked at, many officers believe the name of the culprit is already held within the paperwork. Time can restrict an investigation as people move away, forget details or pass away. But it also works in the other way, that loyalties change, people lose the fear of being found out or their conscience finally gets to them and new information is given. Between 1993 and 1998, six women disappeared under mysterious circumstances within a geographical area now referred to as the Vanishing Triangle:Annie McCarrick (1993): An American student living in Dublin, Annie was last seen boarding a bus to Enniskerry. Despite extensive searches, no trace of her has been found.Fiona Pender (1996): A 25-year-old pregnant woman from Tullamore, Fiona disappeared without a trace.Ciara Breen (1997): A 17-year-old from Dundalk, Ciara vanished after sneaking out of her home one night.Fiona Sinnott (1998): Fiona was last seen leaving a pub in County Wexford. Despite ongoing searches, her case remains unsolved.Jo Jo Dullard (1995): Disappeared while hitchhiking home to Kilkenny from Dublin. The Truro Murders case is one of Australia's most chilling serial murder investigations. It involves the deaths of seven young women in South Australia during the mid-1970s. Reina Carolina Morales Rojas was last seen on Saturday, November 26, 2022 when she left her apartment in her East Boston neighborhood. She was seen getting into a vehicle that was headed to Somerville - reportedly to a friend's house. She is believed to have entered that building on Alston St. That is the extent of what we know. But we didn't know it until she was missing for 45 days. The Boston Police Department would eventually acknowledge their obvious negligence in notifying the public. There was no urgency. In his book, Encyclopedia of Murder and Violent Crime, Eric Hickey wrote about a type of victim that he called, “the Less Dead”. These are people that are seen by the media or law enforcement as having less value than others. Usually sex workers, drug addicts, houseless people, and sexual or racial minorities. The case we're discussing today is about dozens of these types of victims. Women whose disappearances were ignored or were straight up covered up because they happened to be addicts or sex workers. One police officer told a woman's terrified family that the series of missing women were “just junkies and hookers. Don't waste our time.” These were human beings. With friends and families, hopes, dreams, stories, lives. The fact that the authorities ignored their disappearances for so long is one of the worst miscarriages of justice that we've seen in our decades of true crime study.
