Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

In 2020, 16-year-old Antonio Mays Jr. traveled to Seattle's Capitol Hill Occupied Protest zone, a several block encampment that demonstrators declared to be a police-free area. But one night, Mays was shot to death in a stolen Jeep while protestors and journalists livestreamed the aftermath. Protestors said the group's internal security forces shot in self-defense, while video shows someone approaching the stopped Jeep and firing at close range. The conflicting narratives have muddied the truth about that night, and Mays's shooter remains unidentified. From NPR's “Embedded,” KUOW, and The Seattle Times comes the podcast “We Keep Us Safe.” A team of reporters sifts through the video and re-interview witnesses to explore why a teen was killed and another left with brain damage. The team uncovers new evidence, identifies potential suspects in the shooting of Antonio Mays Jr, and asks why justice at a justice-reform demonstration remains elusive. OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "WE KEEP US SAFE" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 13 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. In Crime of the Week: expired! Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler open fall camp week three with the release of the AP Preseason Top 25, where BYU debuts at No. 14 — the Cougars' highest preseason ranking since 1985 and just their second Top 25 preseason nod in 17 years. They run down the full poll (Ohio State, Oregon and Georgia lead the way, with Notre Dame at No. 4 ahead of its October trip to Provo), note LJ Martin cracking Pro Football Network's Top 100 NFL Draft Prospects list as he chases a repeat Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year season, and highlight an ESPN.com feature on why Kalani Sitake is "your favorite coach's favorite coach," featuring quotes from rival Big 12 coaches Brent Brennan, Rich Rodriguez and Joey McGuire. They also address, briefly, the ongoing situation between Sitake and BYU athletic director Brian Santiago before pivoting to a tribute to quarterback Marc Wilson's induction into the Sporting News 1970s All-Decade Team.Campus Notes cover the Cougars in the NFL ahead of roster cutdown day, Rob Wright III's No. 4 ranking among college basketball's top point guards, AJ Dybantsa's NBA rookie schedule, women's soccer and volleyball updates, and BYU golf's showing at the Utah Open. The Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week is freshman Brynnli Tolbert, whose 60th-minute goal at UCLA sealed a 2-1 win. Former BYU tight end Andrew George then joins from Colorado to preview the Cougars' new tight end tandem of Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga II, drawing on his own legendary pairing with Dennis Pitta — right down to the play that sprung McKay Jacobsen for the game-sealing touchdown against Oklahoma — and projects what it could mean for Bear Bachmeier's sophomore season. The back half features BYU-Pathway grad Chantell Hammond, founder of Strategy Square, sharing how finishing her degree online transformed her confidence, a Quick Quack Car Wash fundraiser spotlight, and two Hotel Park City/Ruth's Chris BYU Super Fans — Bret Stailey, joining from Jacksonville, Florida with his son Jack, and Janene Creer, LIVE in the Provo studio — who each share their BYU history and play a round of "Where Were You?" revisiting classic Cougar moments. The show wraps with campus notes, an On This Day history segment (The Wizard of Oz's 1939 premiere, Willie Mays' final home run), an inspirational quote from Mays, and a tease for next week's guests: former Cougar Harvey Langi and Entrata CEO Adam Edmunds, whose company will appear on BYU's jerseys this fall.Timestamps (approximate):0:00 – Show Open: Welcome to Y's Guys, Live Around the World8:47 – BYU Debuts at No. 14 in the AP Preseason Top 2519:03 – LJ Martin Cracks the NFL Draft's Top 100 Big Board21:45 – Why Kalani Sitake Is "Your Favorite Coach's Favorite Coach"23:28 – Dave & Blaine Address the Kalani Sitake–AD Situation27:24 – Remembering Marc Wilson, BYU's 1970s All-Decade Quarterback34:57 – Re-Lyte Athlete of the Week: Brynnli Tolbert36:37 – Campus Notes: Hoops, Volleyball, Golf & AJ Dybantsa's NBA Schedule55:32 – Andrew George Joins the Show from Colorado1:03:15 – Andrew George Breaks Down BYU's New Tight End Duo1:14:05 – Chantell Hammond on Her BYU-Pathway Journey & Strategy Square1:29:07 – Super Fan Bret Stailey Joins Live from Jacksonville, Florida1:40:46 – Super Fan Janene Creer Recalls BYU's 1990 Upset of No. 1 Miami1:55:35 – On This Day: The Wizard of Oz, Willie Mays & BYU History2:00:17 – Next Week: Harvey Langi & Entrata CEO Adam Edmunds#YsGuys #BYUFootball #BYUCougars #CougarNation #GoCougs #Big12Football #AndrewGeorge #LJMartin #BearBachmeier #KalaniSitake #MarcWilson #ChantellHammond #BYUPathway #WalkerLyons #RogerSaleapaga #BrynnliTolbert #BYUSoccer #BYUSuperfans #DaveMcCann #BlaineFowler #lds Hosted on Acast. The Saints have released their first depth chart of training camp, giving us plenty to discuss. Mario Jerez and Erin Summers break down the biggest takeaways, including Alvin Kamara and Travis Etienne being listed as “OR” at running back, Chase Young appearing with an “OR,” Vernon Broughton listed as a starter, and why you probably shouldn't put too much stock into the wide receiver order just yet. While the depth chart is out, the biggest story at camp continues to be the disparity between the Saints' offense and defense. The defense has consistently made plays while the offense has struggled to find its rhythm, particularly when it comes to the timing between Tyler Shough and his receivers. Mario and Erin discuss whether that should be a concern heading into the preseason opener, while also highlighting some of the offensive players who have stood out. On the defensive side, Martin Emerson Jr. continues to make an impression. Emerson had a huge day in padded practice Tuesday, recording two pass breakups and an interception to end a two-minute drill. Mario takes a closer look at Emerson's track record with the Cleveland Browns, where he started 33 games from 2022–2024 and became a key part of one of the NFL's best defenses. Then it's time to look ahead to Week 1. The Saints are currently +6.5 underdogs against the Detroit Lions, with a +265 moneyline, and Mario and Erin discuss whether that line is giving Detroit too much respect — especially with the Lions dealing with several significant injuries. Cade Mays is expected to miss 8–10 weeks, while backup center Juice Scruggs is also dealing with an injury. The guys discuss how important Mays' absence could be for Detroit, along with the status of Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. Plus, quick injury updates around the Saints, including Cam Jordan's hamstring, Demario Davis and Jeremiah Wright returning to practice, and other players dealing with injuries. Finally, Mario and Erin look ahead to Thursday's joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Saturday's first preseason game. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The latest episode of the Daily DLP from the Detroit Lions Podcast reviews the training camp sessions from Monday, August 10th and Tuesday, August 11th. It's a deep dive into the sights and sounds from the Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park. Special attention is paid to the center spot, where Seth McLaughlin has taken over as the starter for the injured Cade Mays. A broken wrist will sideline Mays for 8-to-10 weeks, bleeding into the first few weeks of the regular season. McLaughlin, who missed his entire rookie season recovering from a torn Achilles, had a mixed bag of two practices, though he did get better the more he played. Josh Dobbs is the new backup quarterback, and he kicked off his time with the team with a bang on Tuesday. Dobbs' first pass in the team session was a perfect seam hit to wide receiver Cedrick Wilson between two defenders. Rookie Luke Altmyer took most of the backup reps on Tuesday after playing all of them on Monday. The Daily goes over winners from Tuesday's pit drill, pitting offensive and defensive linemen against one another. Some special teams winners from both days also emerged. There is also quite a battle brewing at running back behind Jahmyr Gibbs and with Sione Vaki sidelined with a nasty eye injury. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #jaredgoff #aidanhutchinson #panaysewell #sethmclaughlin #michaelniese #benbartch #christianmahogany #thomasharper #brianbranch #kirbyjoseph #devinwhite #derekbarnes #jahmyrgibbs #samlaporta #joshdobbs Learn more about your ad choices. Detroit Lions center Cade Mays suffered a small broken bone in his wrist and will miss eight to ten weeks, immediately reshaping Detroit's center plan. Seth McLaughlin handled most first-team snaps today and Juice Scruggs reenters the competition once healthy, while the quarterback room tightens after Teddy Bridgewater stepped away. How serious is Cade Mays's injury and what is the timeline? Cade Mays is out eight to ten weeks with a wrist fracture, per Ian Rapoport, and the Detroit Lions will treat it as a significant in-season absence. Head coach Dan Campbell declined to give a timeline but said Mays would be back for the playoffs. As Jeff Risdon noted on the Detroit Lions Podcast, this is a major setback for an inexperienced interior line that was counting on Mays's early run-game power and communication. The most logical roster move is injured reserve with designation to return. Expecting Mays back after the bye is the early speculation. The takeaway is firm, the Lions must build cohesion without their best center for the first stretch of 2026. Who snaps the ball now for the Detroit Lions? Seth McLaughlin, Detroit Lions undrafted rookie center, took the majority of first-team reps today, and Detroit Lions center Juice Scruggs returns to that competition when his soft-tissue issue clears. Both will get evaluated with first-team work. McLaughlin is quick, smart, and agile, but undersized, and the jump from third-team work to facing Detroit Lions defensive tackle Alim McNeill and Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson showed early. He settled in with some wins and some losses, a work in progress. Scruggs, currently out for Thursday, started at center for the Houston Texans in the first half of 2024 before injuries moved him to guard. He was better at center than guard, and once healthy he will get a real look to outplay McLaughlin. Expect the staff to toggle reps to find the cleanest protections and run fits. What does Teddy Bridgewater stepping away mean for the QB room? Josh Dobbs is now the primary backup to Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, with undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer behind him. Depth if the backup must play is a concern. Jeff Risdon said he likes Dobbs personally and believes he gets it, but added that if Dobbs has to play, he is not feeling great about that. On Luke Altmyer, Risdon described the camp you would expect from an undrafted rookie with promise and a lot of work to do. The message is clear, Goff's health is paramount, and the staff needs clean centers to keep the operation on schedule. Can the offense still fire without Cade Mays? Yes, the offense remains good, but its ceiling drops without Cade Mays anchoring the interior. Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta flashed again and Jared Goff looked great overall, though he did throw a pick. The line has bright spots. Detroit Lions left guard Christian Mahogany has run away with the job and looked very good again. Detroit Lions right guard Tate Ratledge is steady in year two, but losing Mays removes a veteran support hub between him and rookie right tackle Blake Miller. Miller needs more consistency and was beaten at times by Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions edge rusher DJ Wonnum, and defensive end Ahmed Hassanein. Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker's limited practice time last year showed how missed reps hurt cohesion, and Jeff Risdon stressed that five playing as one matters. With Mays out, the Lions must fast-track center continuity to keep a strong offense from slipping. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #cademays #sethmclaughlin #juicescruggs #jaredgoff #samlaporta #aidanhutchinson #djwonnum #alimmcneill #blakemiller #tateratledge #christianmahogany #taylordecker #joshdobbs #teddybridgewater #ahmedhassanein Learn more about your ad choices. Danny and Bill share why NIGP Forum in Columbus this August is worth attending. Straightforward, experienced, and worth a listen.Rick Jennings closes down the episode with a Crazy Bids that really rocks!... and waters.Danny Mays on LinkedInMore on Danny Mays: Danny Mays is the Assistant State Court Administrator of Operations for the Maryland Judiciary, where he leads Procurement, Budget and Finance, Facilities, and Security Administration. He also serves as the Judiciary's Chief Procurement Officer, overseeing procurement strategy, contracts, grants, process improvement, and cross-functional operations for a statewide court system with a $760 million annual operating budget.A longtime public procurement practitioner, instructor, and advocate, Danny has built much of his career around helping procurement move beyond compliance and into leadership. In this episode of The Christopher Perrin Show, Christopher Perrin welcomes John Mays to tell the story of his vocation as a teacher, writer, and founder of Novare Science. Mays traces his winding path from electrical engineering and recording-studio work to public school teaching, graduate study in physics, classical education, and two decades at Regents School of Austin. Along the way, he explains how wide reading in literature, history, philosophy, and theology shaped his approach to science education. The conversation turns to the emergence of Novare Science, beginning with Mays's frustration over the “cram, pass, forget” cycle and his search for a mastery-based model that would help students retain, understand, and love what they learned. Mays describes four major integrations that make science education classical: mathematics, history, epistemology, and language. He also recounts the long entrepreneurial labor of writing, designing, printing, selling, and revising an eleven-book science curriculum over seventeen years. The episode closes with Mays's encouragement to science teachers: teach not merely with routine and assignments, but with wonder, beauty, and a vision of creation as God's loving self-disclosure—themes he develops further in his ClassicalU courses, including Teaching Science Classically: 10 Essential Principles, The Science Mastery Workshop, Science and the Symphony of Creation, and Cultivating Wonder Throughout the School. Episode OutlineJohn Mays's winding path through engineering, recording, teaching, physics, classical education, and curriculum writingDiscovering classical education and teaching physics at Regents School of AustinThe two questions behind Novare: how to teach science classically and how to overcome “cram, pass, forget”Mastery-based learning through cumulative assessments, weekly review, practice, and long-term retentionThe four classical integrations in science: mathematics, history, epistemology, and languageThe first Novare books and the growth from classroom materials into a full science curriculumNovare Science, Centripetal Press, and the eventual partnership with Classical Academic PressTextbook beauty, classroom wonder, and Mays's encouragement to science teachersKey Topics & TakeawaysA Winding Vocation: Mays's story moves through engineering, recording, public teaching, graduate physics, classical education, and curriculum writing. Each stage helped prepare him for the work that became Novare Science. The “Cram, Pass, Forget” Problem: Mays saw that students often crammed for tests, passed them, and forgot nearly everything soon after. He came to regard this as a serious failure of academic formation.Mastery and Long-Term Retention: Mays developed cumulative assessments, weekly review guides, and practice habits so students could retain what they learned. Mastery made learning more durable and satisfying.Classical Science Education: Mays describes classical science as integrating mathematics, history, epistemology, and language so students learn science as part of a larger, ordered vision of reality.Masterable and Beautiful Textbooks: Oversized textbooks can communicate that a subject cannot truly be learned. A humane science text should be carefully written, aesthetically inviting, and realistically masterable.Wonder at Creation: The best science teaching helps students see the grandeur, beauty, and order of creation rather than merely preparing for the next assignment or test.Questions & DiscussionWhat makes a vocation different from a career path?Consider John Mays's movement through engineering, recording, teaching, graduate study, and curriculum writing. How did each stage prepare him for the work that eventually became Novare Science? How does the “cram, pass, forget” cycle show up in your own school or learning experience?Reflect on classes where students pass assessments but do not retain what they learned. What classroom practices might unintentionally encourage short-term cramming rather than mastery? What would it mean to teach for mastery rather than coverage?Discuss the difference between racing through a large textbook and helping students retain a smaller, better-chosen body of knowledge. What would have to change in quizzes, homework, review, and expectations? How do mathematics, history, epistemology, and language make science education more classical?Consider how each element deepens students' understanding of science. Which of these is easiest to include, and which is most often neglected? What role should beauty and wonder play in science education?Discuss Mays's encouragement to show students the grandeur, beauty, and order of creation. What practices help students raise their eyes beyond routine assignments?Suggested Reading & ResourcesNovare ScienceCentripetal PressStudent Lab Report HandbookTeaching Science So That Students Learn Science by John MaysFrom Wonder to MasteryAccelerated Studies in Physics and ChemistryIntroductory PhysicsGeneral Biology Classical Academic PressClassicalU Course: Teaching Science Classically: 10 Essential PrinciplesClassicalU Course: The Science Mastery WorkshopClassicalU Course:

In this episode, you'll learn: How mindfulness helped Oneika move from reactivity to response — and why that shift changed her life. Why loving‑kindness (metta) is a powerful antidote to fear, hate, and overwhelm in difficult times. What meditation is really for — and why it's not about feeling good.

In this episode, I'm joined by NP educator Dr. Lauren Mays to discuss recognizing human trafficking, common misconceptions, and the important role healthcare providers play in supporting vulnerable patients.     We discuss how trafficking signs often show up as more of a vague "something's not quite right here" feeling and what to do when this feeling comes up. Dr. Mays also shares some examples of common symptoms, how to create privacy and safety, and why our role is not to investigate or rescue, but to provide trauma-informed, patient-centered care.                                            Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://blog.npreviews.com/recognizing-human-trafficking-lauren-mays                    Follow us on Instagram: instagram.com/smnpreviewsofficial       Connect with Lauren on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/lauren-c-mays-2676781a2/
