Frank Herbert, author of Dune and other works, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, Lawrence Davidson and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded July, 1981 at Westercon in Sacramento. During the July 4th weekend of 1981, the Probabilities crew, Richard Lupoff, Lawrence Davidson and Richard Wolinsky, went to the Westercon Science fiction convention in Sacramento. One of the guests that weekend was Frank Herbert. By that point, he'd written several novels, including what had become known as the Dune trilogy – Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. Earlier that year, a sequel to the trilogy had been published, God Emperor of Dune. The three managed to corral the author for an interview that lasted, including some socializing, to just under a half hour. Back at KPFA, it turned out that the tape had screwed up, and the final portion of the interview had speed variations that made it unlistenable. Perhaps ten minutes were aired at the time. Digitizing it in 2021, it became clear that at least some more of the interview could be manipulated sufficiently to allow listeners to follow the conversation. The final question in the interview did not survive. Here's what happened: In 1977, Ballantine Books published a novel called Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. After reading the novel, Richard Wolinsky drew up a long list of plot points the book shared with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so many in fact that the publisher, Judy-Lyn Del Rey, also the publisher of the Tolkien books, admitted with a nodthat any other publisher could have been sued for plagiarism. What turned Sword of Shannara into a best-seller, however, was a very positive review by Frank Herbert that appeared in the New York Times. Dick Lupoff became obsessed with the review, and how it ignored the similarities between the two books. In that final question, he asked Herbert about the review. At first, Herbert admitted that he overlooked the Tolkienesque prose style because most new authors copy others. When Dick pressed him further about the content, Herbert finally said that he had never read Lord of the Rings. After that answer, he said abruptly, “times up.” After 1981, Frank Herbert wrote two more Dune sequels, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune before dying at the age of 65. After his death, his son Brian Herbert along with Kevin J. Anderson used Herbert's notes for several other novels and one collection of short stories, which at this point stands at 15 additional books set in the universe of Dune. The chronological history of Dune concluded with Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007)  based on Frank Herbert's original chronology and outlines for the final books in the series. The David Lynch version of Dune came out in 1984 and is streaming on HBO Max. The story of the Dune movie that was never made, Jodorowsky's Dune, was released as a documentary in 2013 and can be rented on various streaming services. A new version of Dune, (first of two parts) directed by Denis Villeneuve, opens in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021.             The post The Probabilities Archive: Frank Herbert (1920-1986), 1981: “Dune” appeared first on KPFA.

Using stories and songs of Antiquity, he creates places where the audience can find their unspoken secrets and address them with new inspiration. With twenty albums, a few spoken word stories and many collaborations with other musicians, Alexander applies transformational magic to his music in hopes of changing things that need to be changed. Heir to the music and legend of Heather Alexander, Alec performs her music and his own with a style that goes beyond reality and into the imagined.   Dee Astell Dee Astell co-founded and co-runs the Arizona Penny Dreadfuls. She blogs at emsjoiedeweird.com.   Gilead  Growing up in the magical fairyland of Prescott, AZ—located in the Bradshaw Mountain range just west of Cimmeria, east of Barsoom and near the mines of Moria—Gilead spent his youth sketching the dragons, goblins and fairies who always surrounded him but whom, sadly, most other people couldn't see. He continues to travel between worlds to draw and paint on location in such places as Narnia, Hyborea and Central Arizona, usually after convincing the most beautiful women of those realms to take their clothes off for him. It's a tough gig. "Fantasy and science fiction are so strongly associated with the illustration of books that it confuses people to meet a fantasy artist who isn't an illustrator, but I got my fill of commercial art in the sign business. My style is realism with a heavy dose of whimsy. It's all in good fun. I don't take myself too seriously; I just like to make cool pictures." Now a retired sign painter and something of an environmentalist, Gilead likes to paint on recycled materials such as lumber, cabinet doors and old signs. "What I do take seriously is the environment and ways to make it better. My current focus is mostly on the social and environmental impact of making art with recycled materials." See more at https://www.facebook.com/GileadArt   Professor Sparks Professor Sparks presents unique and spectacular high voltage shows, demonstrating some of the rare and unique electrical artifacts and apparatus he has been collecting for decades. By day a safety expert training OSHA compliance officers all across the U.S., Professor Sparks presents spectacular visual displays of high voltage arcs, sparks and bolts of electricity with a 500,000 volt Tesla coil and equipment from Ken Strickfaden's set for the 1931 Frankenstein, including the Cosmic Ray Diffuser, the Digital Disputer and the Nebularium, not to forget the 75,000 volt lightning screen. Pitney & Amelia's Bitchen Boutique

Continuing our discussion of happy memories, we venture into our nerdy pasts! Amelia's first convention was TimeCon '84 in San Jose, California, which was an epic event for numerous reasons, but her fondest memories of that weekend all involve Jon Pertwee, star of Doctor Who from 1970 to 1974. He was incredibly kind to dorky, fifteen year old Amelia, ad she's got stories (and a cherished photo) to prove it! WesterCon '83 may not have been Pitney's first convention, but it was the first to blow his mind. Are you ready to hear the adorable story of young Pitney seeing his first homosexual in the wild? And what would be memories of fandom without a bit of Verity and Tricia? Then there was the tragic tale of Pitney's Doctor Who autograph collection. Grab a hanky. And last but not least, a quick story about Pitney going to Target and learning about Galentine's Day. (Do you know whose TimeCon nametag that is? Be the first to identify "Theta Sigma" in an email to us and Amelia will give you a present!) Don't forget 2019 is the Year of the Vagina! As authors we spend a lot of time trying to make our readers care about the characters we create. We have a wide variety of techniques at our disposal to accomplish this. But do we ever ask ourselves why any of this is possible in the first place? What is it about our brains that makes us care about fictional characters? Enter Cory Doctorow, who posed this question to us at Westercon 67. If you like the episodes where a guest comes in and blows our minds (and they're some of our favorites) you need to put this one on the list. What would a 50th anniversary celebration year be without some talk of the companions? Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we take a break from our Classic Doctors countdown to chat about the companions who were "modern women" at the time they were on the show. Is Barbara the greatest? What's changed about contemporary companions over the years? And has such change been for the better? Are "modern" companions even necessary? Is Barbara really the greatest? We cover those questions and much more. So much more, in fact, that there's even a mention of "Doctor in Distress". (Editor's note: Click that link at your own risk. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.) ^E Also covered [links on our site]:Tansy guests on Splendid Chaps!Erika will be on panels at Westercon 66 and watched "The Mind of Evil" in color!Liz is annoyed Erika stole her happy thing!Deb orders Live at the End of the World from Traffic Experiment!

It has been one crazy week in the world of Doctor Who, with rumours of scores of missing Doctor Who episodes being found, then not found, then found again, then, finally, all of them declared not missing but destroyer. The end. Is it, though? The wait for a new Doctor will also have to wait awhile, so there is very little in the way of solid news to discuss this week, but that didn’t stop the Three Who Rule! One thing is for sure, though – Radio Free Skaro will be at Westercon 66 in Sacramento in a couple weeks, and the convention organizers Kevin Roche and Andy Tremblay are here to tell you all about it. It’s looking like it might be an interesting summer in this, the 50th anniversary year of Doctor Who! Check out the show notes at http://www.radiofreeskaro.com

And just like that, we're back to our 50th anniversary countdown of the Doctors, and it's the sixth Doctor's turn! Join Deb, Erika, Kat, and Liz as we discuss the delights (or lack thereof) of Colin Baker's reign as our favorite Time Lord. Or is the Doctor our favorite Time Lord, now that we've seen the Rani? That's right, we're talking about "The Mark of the Rani", which at least one of us thought was the most representative story of the sixth Doctor's run. Is old Colin as bad as so many folks say he is? Is Peri? Does the Rani now own Deb thoroughly? Should we have covered "Timelash" instead? We don't actually agree on most of these things, but boy howdy do we have a good time talking about them! ^E Also covered [links on our site]:Erika appears on Nerdology UK and at Westercon 66!Doctor Who playsets!Anyone can submit cool stuff to our Verity! With the furore and fascination of Eurovision now over with (oh, the excitement! The whimsy!), the Three Who Rule turn their gaze towards one of the most prolific directors in the new series, Euros Lyn, in this week's Miniscope. Lyn was credited with directing an astonishing eleven episodes across nine stories, including some stunning work on Tooth and Claw, and some questionable decisions on the David Tennant/RTD finale The End of Time. Also discussed in this week's podcast is Radio Free Skaro's upcoming appearance at Westercon 66 in July 2013, and some exciting news on the DVD front in the months to come. All in all, this week's episode is worth more Euros than money can buy!
