This week Josh sits down with Co-Host BJ Hall to Talk a possible super hunt for Beagles!
Tonight, we'll read from the ninth chapter of British naturalist Charles Darwin's “The Voyage of the Beagle” titled “Santa Cruz, Patagonia and the Falkland Islands”. The five-year expedition laid the groundwork for Darwin's later theory of evolution by natural selection. In this chapter, Darwin recounts an overland expedition up the Santa Cruz River in southern Patagonia. The landscape is stark and repetitive, with shingle plains, thorny bushes, and a scarcity of birds or waterfowl. Darwin documents vast flows of basaltic lava and enormous erratic boulders, offering early insights into glacial and marine forces that shaped the land. His observations blend physical hardship with scientific wonder, as he marvels at condors circling above the cliffs and theorizes about the slow, ancient processes that carved the Patagonian terrain. If you'd like to start from the beginning, the first episode of this series aired on June 10th, 2024, with subsequent monthly episodes exploring Darwin's journey in detail. Behind every “yes” in the toy industry, there's a mountain of “no's,” countless hours of hustle, and more trial and error than most people expect. At one point, he came close to walking away from it all—until a single line from an episode of Bluey reminded him that making games was exactly what he was meant to do.In this episode Making It In The Toy Industry, I'm joined by the incredibly talented Jeremy Posner, owner of Shenanigans Toys and Games, the inventor behind hit games like Beagle or Bagel, Bears in Barrels, and Piggy Piggy. He's been named to the Mojo Nation 100 SIX times, won Game Innovator of the Year at the TAGIEs, and has worked with some of the biggest names in the toy industry like Hasbro, Mattel, and Spin Master. But here's the plot twist: it took Jeremy EIGHT years to meet his royalty goals. And that's after winning major awards and getting meetings with big companies right out the gate. You're gonna hear why just licensing a game doesn't mean you've made it, what really makes a game “sellable” to toy companies, and why most ideas just don't cut it. Jeremy also explained the real deal with royalties or advances, and how long it actually takes to see a check. He even shared how he trained his brain to be more creative (yes, that's a thing!).Dreaming of creating the next game night hit or just curious what it really takes to make it in toys and games?Hit play and steal a few smart moves for your next big creative leap.Listen for these Important Moments! [00:03:07] - Despite early wins, including a TAGIE award and a background at Big Monster Toys, Jeremy didn't hit his financial goals from game licensing until eight years in. [00:11:17] - After Toy Fair, Jeremy reflects on the silence that often follows a pitch. He explains how learning why you're hearing “no” (and from whom) is key to improving your ideas and not losing steam.[00:23:00] - Around year four, Jeremy stopped “just creating” and started strategically designing evergreens. He audited his creative process, studied the brain, and trained himself to boost creative output daily.[00:33:04] - Jeremy tests tons of game ideas fast by building quick, minimum viable prototypes. He runs super short playtests to see what's worth developing and keep his creativity flowing.[00:40:35] - Near the end of the episode, Jeremy shares his dream of designing fan experiences for sports teams and creating original game shows, proving he's still dreaming big, even after major success in toys and games.Send The Toy Coach Fan Mail! “Emergencies don't wait—neither should you.” —Dave Beagle, Ooma In a time-sensitive and information-rich conversation, Doug Green, publisher of Technology Reseller News, sat down with Dave Beagle of Ooma to discuss the urgent need for businesses to migrate away from traditional copper POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines. Beagle delivered a compelling presentation centered around Ooma's Airdial solution, which is specifically engineered to support mission-critical applications like fire and life safety systems. The discussion highlighted a ticking clock: with AT&T aiming to sunset all copper lines by 2029—and over 10 million POTS lines still active—resellers and IT advisors are faced with a once-in-a-generation opportunity. “That means replacing over 8,500 lines a day, starting now,” said Beagle. “It's time for partners to act.” Ooma Airdial stands out in the growing “POTS-in-a-box” market for several reasons: Purpose-Built for Fire Life Safety: Unlike competitors that cobble together multiple technologies, Airdial is a vertically integrated solution—built by Ooma from the ground up for environments like elevators, fire panels, and emergency call systems. MultiPath Transport (MPT): Ooma's patented, active-active voice transmission over LTE and Ethernet ensures emergency calls remain connected without failover delays. Compliance and Visibility: Airdial supports NFPA 72, UL certifications, and PCI/HIPAA regulations, with device-level management available via a robust Remote Device Manager portal. Award-Winning Technology: Airdial has earned accolades from Elevator World, Internet Telephony, FacilitiesNet, and Frost & Sullivan for innovation and reliability. Beagle also underscored how rising costs and decommissioning notices—often buried in telecom bills—are already impacting organizations. In one case, a $100 POTS line was suddenly billed at $1,000 due to a rate hike buried in the fine print. “That's $25,000 in exposure over two months—money that could've gone to laptops in a school district or medical equipment in a hospital,” said Beagle. Airdial's design reflects real-world installation challenges: from basement deployment and signal optimization to asset management and E911 location accuracy. Even the power cord has a locking mechanism to prevent accidental shutdown. “We control the hardware, the software, and the supply chain,” Beagle said. “We believe that's why so many resellers and channel partners are choosing Airdial—and why many who started with other solutions are switching to Ooma.” To learn more, visit ooma.com/airdial.

Tonight, we'll read from the eighth chapter of British naturalist Charles Darwin's “The Voyage of the Beagle” titled “Banda Oriental and Patagonia”. “The Voyage of the Beagle” is the title most commonly given to the book first published in 1839 as Darwin's “Journal and Remarks”, bringing him considerable fame and respect. If you'd like to start from the beginning, the first episode of this series aired on June 10th, 2024, with subsequent monthly episodes exploring Darwin's journey in detail. In this chapter Darwin recounts his travels through Banda Oriental (modern-day Uruguay) and into the vast landscapes of Patagonia. He describes the rugged beauty of the region, contrasting the rolling hills and fertile pastures of Uruguay with the harsh, windswept plains of Patagonia. As he moves south, Darwin observes the local people, particularly gauchos and indigenous groups, noting their customs, resilience, and way of life in these remote lands. Wildlife continues to capture Darwin's attention, especially the large herds of wild cattle and the presence of predators such as jaguars. This chapter marks Darwin's growing appreciation for Patagonia's stark, untamed beauty and the scientific potential hidden within its desolate expanses. His observations, from fossils to animal behavior, continue to shape his revolutionary ideas about natural selection and adaptation, which would later be fully realized in On the Origin of Species. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Gerry Rasmussen Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Canadian cartoonist Gerry Rasmussen. In this episode, we chat about how Gerry got into drawing, and how he started making money with his artistic skills while still in elementary school by selling on the spot drawings of 'Denis the Menace' to fellow school kids. Next, we get into how he met his co-creator, Gary Delainey at art school. Together, they produce a daily comic strip called 'Betty'. They have been making this comic strip for nearly 50 years, and due to its runs in The Edmonton Journal, and other publications; it is one of the most recognized comics in Canada! Being featured on GoComics.com and syndicated by King Features doesn't hurt either! 'Betty' has been popularized throughout modern popular culture for several decades; even a fun tie-in with The Edmonton Oilers hockey organization. We also touch on some of the children's books Gerry has illustrated, such as 'Sniffy the Beagle' with author Rita Eagle; and the sports books: 'Crazy About Hockey', 'Crazy About Soccer', & 'Crazy About Basketball' by author Loris Lesynski. Finally, we discuss his passion for teaching art to kids and adults. In partnership with a couple of universities in and around Edmonton, Gerry teaches, draws, and motivates the next generation of art enthusiasts. If you happen to see him at Red Deer Polytechnic (formerly Red Deer College), or The Pygmalion School of Art, tell him you heard him on Fascination Street Podcast!Special thanks to Gerry's son Nils Rasmussen (Uncle Outrage) for turning me onto his spectacular father!

16 bit JRPGs are a bit of a nostalgia spot for me. I would actually classify it as more of misplaced nostalgia in that I didn't play a lot of them growing up but playing them now makes me feel nostalgic anyway. This week on the show I was lucky enough to get a review copy of a recently released indie game that takes inspiration from the 16 bit JRPG style. I'm joined by Sam AKA Storm Beagle to talk about Beloved Rapture, an RPG made in the style of a 16 bit JRPG. He discuss what this game does to stand out compared to other games of it's kind, how effective it's story is, it's battle mechanics and we also debate if the phrase "You silver haired fuck" is a good line or not. As a small spoiler, this game kinda rules and you should go play it, but if you'd like to hear more about it, give this episode a listen!
Cuvier was wrong...

Beagles! Phenomenal Little Hounds for Families [caption id="attachment_13522" align="alignleft" width="421"] Lindsay Bryson showing her Beagle at Westminster Kennel Club.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves is joined by Beagle breeder Lindsay Bryson for a deep dive on Beagles as we ramp up the Love the Breeds specials again. Lindsay started her Beagle journey with an obedience dog and shares why that challenge helped her understand the breed better. “I decided to really jump into the dog world with the biggest challenge I could find,” Lindsay said. “He was not even supposed to be a show dog. I had no interest in doing conformation shows. I just wanted to do something with my dog and this woman that I got my first Beagle from, she was in obedience and I thought, well that sounds like fun. “I took him to the pet store one day and the cashier there said, wow, you have a really beautiful Beagle, you should show him in conformation. And I thought, ohh, why not? We'll give that a try too. Sure. So that is how I fell down the rabbit hole, for lack of a better term, of conformation dog shows. “I teach my dogs a quiet command very, very early. You do actually, technically want a loud Beagle because if you're out in the field, you essentially send your pack out and you don't see them, you are focusing on hearing them. So if you have a quiet Beagle that doesn't open up and bay when they catch the scent, you're gonna lose it. It's going to be gone. And many people know that Beagles, once they get going, they're not necessarily going to come back. So you need to have a loud Beagle. “If you're going to be taking that into your home and living with it. obviously, you don't want that. So one of the things that I teach my dogs very, very early is ‘quiet,' knock it off, you know, keep your volume down. Because that is what's going to work in neighborhoods and when you have people living around you versus out in the field or on acreage. “Living with beagles is like having a permanent 2 year old. They are just forever toddlers. They're constantly looking for things, they're looking for stuff to get into. They're looking for ways to occupy their mind. It is so important to keep a Beagle's mind busy. Because as soon as they get bored, that's when you start running into the problems that people talk about. Digging, barking, destructive behavior, separation anxiety. [caption id="attachment_13526" align="alignright" width="429"] Beagles love FASTCat[/caption] “If you have a tired Beagle, it is a happy Beagle. So I always encourage people to go out and do things with their dogs, take them hiking, take them running, you know, do performance work with them, even if it's not obedience. I've started running my dogs in Fast Cat and they love it. They think that is the greatest thing because all they get to do is run for 100 yards and then they get cookies at the end. It's like the perfect Beagle job.”
Tonight, we'll read from the seventh chapter of British naturalist Charles Darwin's “The Voyage of the Beagle” titled “Buenos Aires and Santa Fe”. “The Voyage of the Beagle” is the title most commonly given to the book first published in 1839 as Darwin's “Journal and Remarks”, bringing him considerable fame and respect. The book chronicles Darwin's five-year journey aboard the HMS Beagle, during which he made groundbreaking observations that contributed to his theory of evolution by natural selection. If you'd like to start from the beginning, the first episode of this series aired on June 10th, 2024, with subsequent monthly episodes exploring Darwin's journey in detail. This chapter explores Darwin's overland journey from Buenos Aires to Santa Fe, Argentina, providing vivid descriptions of the landscape, people, and wildlife he encounters. The region is dominated by flat, fertile plains, part of the expansive Pampas, which Darwin admires for their vastness and agricultural potential. He observes the lifestyles of the local inhabitants, including gauchos, whose skills in horsemanship and simple yet resourceful way of life fascinate him. Darwin also reflects on the history and politics of the region, commenting on the social conditions and the impact of Spanish colonization. He describes the wildlife in detail, noting the abundance of large birds like rheas and the diversity of smaller animals. Darwin continues his geological studies, examining rock formations and fossils that reveal the natural history of the area. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Many people erroneously think that Charles Darwin was once blissfully content with the biblical explanation of origins. The truth is significantly otherwise. The concept of evolution had, in fact, been ‘in his family’ ever since his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, first suggested it in 1770. So we need to carefully consider the influences on Darwin’s mindset before he set out aboard the Beagle on his round-the-world trip in 1831. Tonight, we'll read from the sixth chapter of British naturalist Charles Darwin's “The Voyage of the Beagle”. This chapter explores more of Darwin's journey from Bahia Blanca to Buenos Aries. He reflects on the landscape, vegetation, and wildlife of the region, which is marked by vast, desolate plains and dry shrubland. Darwin notes the scarcity of water, the presence of thorny bushes, and the occasional sighting of wildlife like armadillos. He also encounters the indigenous people of the area and reflects on their customs and ways of life, contrasting them with those of European settlers. This chapter captures his growing curiosity and sense of discovery, as he observes and analyzes the natural history of South America with scientific enthusiasm. “The Voyage of the Beagle” is the title most commonly given to the book published in 1839 as Darwin's “Journal and Remarks”, bringing him considerable fame and respect.
