Conversation is at the heart of Irishman Abroad. Today Ed Guiney the co-founder of Element Pictures (Lobster, Room, Killing Of Sacred Deer, What Richard Did, The Guard, Adam & Paul, Normal People) tells us why it’s also at the centre of making great TV and film.   This week he sat down with Jarlath to discuss life, work and the huge success of Normal People the screen adaptation of Sally Rooney’s award winning book. What makes someone chose to be a film producer and what makes them decide at 15 years old to chose it as their path when Ireland was on its knees economically. Ed talks about his work and friendship with Lenny Abrahamson, the role of intuition in decision making and how much he believes film relies upon the planets aligning. The discussion covers a range of subjects including attempts by film companies come up with possibly shooting solutions to allow productions to take place during the global pandemic.    Ed opens up to Jarlath about how he copes with worry, the production that was spiralling in cost, the best audition tapes he’s ever seen and more (Patreon only). Derudover skal vi naturligvis kværne en masse anmeldelser igennem (About Time, This is the End, The Escape Plan, Betties tur, Farvel til mafiaen, What Richard Did, Carrie, Frances Ha, Thor: The Dark World, En nuance af blå, Tarok, Captain Phillips, The Broken Circle Breakdown og Mit liv med Liberace) og snakke lidt nyheder.

Newcomer Jack Reynor joins host Robin Milling at The Tribeca Film Festival for his film What Richard Did. The Colorado born, Ireland raised actor now makes his home in Los Angeles in preparation for Transformers 4 co-starring Mark Wahlberg. Jack tells Robin he is undaunted and well prepared for the brink of the blockbuster which will ultimately give him tremendous accolades in Hollywood. With his baby face good looks he will no doubt grace the cover of many teen magazines. Thanks to advice he received from fellow countryman Michael Fassbender, he is ready. Growing up in the idyllic town of Humphrystown, Co. Wicklow, he was no stranger to the Transformer toys. Recently he visited his childhood home where he discovered a bag of 'bad ass tanks' in his attic which he gifted to his younger brother and sister. Ironically he got the call for the movie a couple of months later. In What Richard Did, Jack shows off his acting talents to the hilt portraying a star athlete in South Dublin who must face the consequences of wronging the people closest to him. Jumping into icy cold waters in the Irish sea for the beach scenes was just the surface of playing out the emotional arc his character goes through. With Kirsty Lang. A Mormon community in Lancashire provides the setting for The Friday Gospels, a novel by Betty Trask Prize-winner Jenn Ashworth. She was raised as a Mormon until she was a teenager, and she reflects on why she wanted to write about her experience as a British Mormon, when most literature focuses on American Mormon communities. My Mad Fat Diary is a new TV comedy drama series, based on the real life journals of Rae Earl, who recorded her teenage life in Lincolnshire. Stand-up comic Sharon Rooney stars as an overweight 16 year-old, recently released from a psychiatric hospital, and attempting to find a new circle of friends. Writer Grace Dent reviews. Cellist Matthew Barley is celebrating Benjamin Britten's centenary year with 100 concerts and workshops, with a focus on the composer's Third Suite For Cello - written for Rostropovich in 1971. Barley's tour, Around Britten, visits castles, hospices, lighthouses and a cave in the Peak District - as well as concert halls from Orkney to Devon. He tells Kirsty the links between Britten, Russia and his own grandfather - and the experience of recording overnight in Canterbury Cathedral. What Richard Did, the third film from Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, is set in the privileged world of Dublin's young elite. Richard, who is handsome, popular and the star of the rugby team, lives a charmed life - until his carefree existence is destroyed by a violent event.
