In December 2013, Australian journalist Peter Greste, alongside fellow Al Jazeera colleagues Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, were arrested in Cairo, Egypt under charges of holding illegal meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation declared as a terrorist group by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. Kriv Stenders is a prolific Australian filmmaker, with his work spanning features, documentaries, and TV series. His latest film, The Correspondent, translates this period of Greste's life, as documented in his 2017 memoir The First Casualty, to screen, with Richard Roxburgh portraying the award winning journalist. The Correspondent is a salient reminder of the need for a global free press, and it arrives at a time where journalists around the world, even Australia, are being vilified, condemned, or at worse, being imprisoned or murdered for their work. While The Correspondent considers the legal battles that Greste and his journalistic colleagues endured between 2013 through to 2015, when Greste was released, the film then reflects on another attack on journalists, with Stenders and writer Peter Duncan taking us to another part of Greste's life, when he worked alongside Kate Peyton (portrayed by Yael Stone) in Mogadishu, Somalia in 2011. These scenes act as an insight to the complex ways that reporting from war zones leads to the aggressors violently controlling the passage of information, with The Correspondent then amplifying the message of advocating for free press.A central aspect to that advocacy is Richard Roxburgh's turn as Peter Greste. Arguably, this is the finest performance of Richard Roxburgh's career, with the weight of expectation, trauma, uncertainty, and grief lingering on his mind, often only appearing through glances or brief looks at his fellow inmates. Roxburgh echoes the work of Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, another film which sees the acclaimed actor give a career best turn, and in doing so, brings to life Greste in an empathetic and supportive manner. It is as if this is the only performance that matters in his career. It's powerful stuff. I carry that in mind when I sit down to discuss the film with Kriv Stenders, oddly for the first time in my career. I've long admired Stenders work, from having caught The Illustrated Family Doctor in a small screen at Luna Cinemas Leederville, to being knocked off my feet with Boxing Day and Lucky Country. He then took his filmmaking to a new level with Red Dog and Red Dog: True Blue, and with the back of this run of films, he has examined the role that Australian stories and voices have on our cultural identity. Few filmmakers in Australian cinema get more than one or two films, and yet Stenders has crafted an enduring filmography that comments on and furthers our understanding of what Australian culture, identity, and cinema, can be. While this is my first time talking with Kriv, I know it won't be my last. The Correspondent arrives in Australian cinemas on 17 April 2025, with Q&A screenings continuing to take place at select cinemas. Make sure to check your local cinema guide for session details. The film adaptation of this stage hit, proved to be a powerhouse. The performances by such a stacked cast were phenomenal and led by the actors who brought down the house night after night on Broadway. Frost/Nixon succeeds because it keeps itself boxed in. It doesn't linger, or expound in unnecessary areas. We found watching this during the political climate to be an added layer to the experience. What did you think of the girl fight Frost/Nixon? Admiral McRaven is a four-star admiral who oversaw the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden; his forces were responsible for the capture of Saddam Hussein; and he also led the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, who was held hostage by Somali pirates (which became the basis for the blockbuster movie, Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks). As commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Admiral McRaven led a force of 72,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. After his military career, he served as chancellor of the University of Texas System, overseeing 14 institutions, 220,000 students, 20,000 faculty and more than 80,000 health care professionals, researchers, and staff. In 2014, he gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas that went viral, titled, “If You Want To Change The World, Start Off By Making Your Bed.” He is also the author of several books, including Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations and the New York Times Bestseller, Make Your Bed. In this episode we discuss the following: When Admiral McRaven asked his Master Chief how to earn the respect of the soldiers, he responded: “Work hard. Come early. Stay late. Work on the weekends.” You don't have to be the most talented to succeed. But regardless of talent, everyone can work hard. You will earn the respect of others if they know you are working hard on their behalf. Know your business. As a Navy SEAL that meant knowing all about weapons, diving, and demolition. It also meant knowing the details of the playbook. For example, if you're in an ambush, first guy goes left, second guy goes right. When Admiral McRaven's solider accidentally blew off the leg of his colleague, the Master Chief wanted to go relatively easy on the solider. But Admiral McRaven believed they needed to “throw the book at him.” And through the tough love of accountability, the solider bounced back and became Sailor of the Year. How do you gain respect of those you lead? Work hard and be a good person. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When I asked Admiral McRaven, “Did you ever get scared?” he laughed out loud: “Yeah, of course. You're scared all the time.” But he was able to fall back on his training and barricade his fears to help him get through countless life-threatening situations. Here's our big August in Action theme show on What's New to Netflix, where it's all about explosions, car chases, shoot-outs, and the destruction of public property, but not before we talk about all the new stuff heading to Netflix this month as well. Then we watch Tom Hanks deal with a group of ruthless pirates in Captain Phillips from 2013. Next, Eddie Murphy is back in the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F from 2024. And finally, the film that made Will Smith and Martin Lawrence stars, as well as kickstarting Michael Bay's movie career, Bad Boys from 1995. All of this plus a whole lot of Chucky, unnecessary director's cuts, annoying influencers, movies people love to hate on, AMC's Netflix takeover, and just way too much content in general. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflix@gmail.com

[2:23] Every July, we like to kick off the Summer with a Mid-Year Risk Report from our friends in the RIMS Publications Department, RIMS Publications Director and Editor-in-Chief of Risk Management Magazine, Morgan O'Rourke, and the magazine's Senior Editor, Hilary Tuttle. [2:45] I thought it would be fun to hear what's shaking the landscape in risk management. Morgan and Hilary are the best in risk management reporting. We'll talk about risk management trends, some of their favorite topics to cover, and even some of the accolades that the magazine and website have won. [3:08] Hilary Tuttle and Morgan O'Rourke, welcome back to RIMScast! [3:26] RIMS Risk Management Magazine has won three design awards this year from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, known as the Azbee Awards. Congratulations to our friend, Art Director, Andrew Bass. [4:20] RIMS Risk Management Magazine is digital-first, publishing new articles weekly, sometimes a couple a week. It has quarterly digital-only issues and newsletters. The issues look like the former print edition but use technology in new ways to publish content. They are seeking contributions of articles from risk professionals. Contact them if you have a risk article to write! [6:27] The Q2 issue of RIMS Risk Management Magazine addresses the impact of AI on insurance underwriting. It covers geopolitical issues for the rest of the year. AI and geopolitics are dominant issues now. It also contains guidance on things like document retention policies for litigation and the uses of parametric insurance to address earthquake risk. [8:05] The issue presents news on the growing copyright infringement claims from the use of social media content and information on third-party risk management issues. [8:21] Russ Banham wrote an article in this issue about supply chains. Hilary also recently wrote content about shipping. There is a record low of ship losses but a notable increase in threats to shipping. Geopolitics, including the conflict between Israel and Gaza, and conflict in the Red Sea are driving the threats. The majority of cargo ships are being rerouted around Africa. [9:51] This rerouting affects supply chains greatly. It also affects the environment. By the end of 2023, after about two months of conflict, emissions were up 14%. Ships add 10 days of sailing time to go around Africa. The emergency infrastructure is strained for the route around Africa when ships that are built to stay in coastal waters are rerouted. [10:34] Somali pirates are back. International regulations on patrolling for piracy expired. Patrolling has been redirected to the Red Sea for the conflict there. Ships navigating the Horn of Africa cross through Somali waters. These factors provide opportunities to the pirates. Since December there have been several boardings. [12:38] “Ghost ships,” a fleet of unregistered ships, are shipping oil from Russia to countries that are still doing business with Russia. These are older boats that are poorly maintained that can't be insured and are likely to leak, break, or catch on fire in port. The costs are borne by local governments and property owners wherever the ship docks. [15:01] Hilary brings up the Captain Phillips movie, where the Somali pirates kept mentioning insurance payouts. [15:26] It's RIMS plug time! Webinars! Servpro will make their RIMS Webinars debut on August 8th with more details to be announced shortly. Register at RIMS.org/Webinars. Webinars are complimentary for RIMS members! [15:50] The RIMS ERM Conference 2024 will be held on November 18th and 19th in Boston, Massachusetts. The agenda will be announced soon, as will a call for submissions for the ERM Award of Distinction. I'll have that link up soon on an upcoming episode. [16:09] Review your organization's ERM program, and if you feel it was successful and you have the numbers and the data to back it up, compile that information and get ready to submit your ERM program for the ERM Award of Distinction. [16:24] The Spencer Educational Foundation's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved, in part, through a collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the United States and Canada. [16:40] The Spencer Educational Foundation's Risk Manager on Campus Program brings a practicing risk manager to a university to present and engage with students about the risk profession and the insurance industry for about one to three days. There is a grant program with an application deadline of June 30th. The link is in this episode's show notes. [17:06] Check out the sample application at that link. Risk Manager on Campus Grant Awardees are typically notified at the end of September. Apply by June 30th, 2024. On September 12th, 2024 we look forward to seeing you at the Spencer Funding Their Future Gala at The Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. [17:31] Our recent guest from Episode 293, Lilian Vanvieldt-Gray, will be the honoree. Lilian is the Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at Alliant Insurance Services. She will be honored for her valuable contributions to supporting the future of risk management and insurance. [17:55] That was a great episode, so after you finish this one, go back and listen to Episode 293! [18:01] Let's return to my interview with Morgan O'Rourke and Hilary Tuttle of the Azbee Award-winning RIMS Risk Management Magazine. [18:30] July is the start of severe weather seasons across the globe. The forecasts are terrible. The East Coast is facing a heat dome. It becomes an issue for businesses of protecting their workers. In a recent survey, 65% of small business owners said they plan heat safety measures to protect employees; 35% of small business owners have no plan for such measures. [19:24] There are some severe consequences if you have employees working outside without any consideration for their safety. OSHA has raised extreme heat safety as an enforcement priority. If you are in the 35% not planning or employee safety in the heat, reconsider your plan. [19:53] The Workers Compensation Research Institute recently did a study that found that the probability of work-related accidents increases by five to six percent over 90 degrees. The effect is strongest in the South. This relates to heat stroke but also to extreme heat's effects on cognitive function, reflexes, and reaction time. There is an increase in incidents like falling. [20:39] There is also a correlation between excessive heat and more significant injuries like traumatic injuries, dislocations, lacerations, and more. Some claims are a lot bigger. [21:27] Morgan notes some recommendations employers can follow for providing and enforcing planned breaks, water, and shade. They should have a thought-out process and strategy. If an employer sees obvious effects, they must get employees immediately out of harm's way into a colder place. If someone is confused or vomiting, get them medical attention immediately. [22:38] It's helpful to educate the workforce to know what symptoms to look out for in themselves and others, especially heat stroke symptoms that may not be obvious. This is a great mitigation option. [22:59] Employers can use technology to monitor people's temperature and the temperature of the environment where they work. This includes wearables. [23:31] Mitigation protocols apply both to extreme cold and extreme heat. Both can cause great harm. A sports drink is not all that is needed. [23:48] There is a new hurricane season outlook and infographic with the 2024 forecast on the Risk Management Magazine website. Hilary reviewed 10 detailed meteorological research studies and all of them predicted an above-average active season. [24:21] Some called it a hyperactive or supercharged storm season. People are expecting quite a lot of storms and worse storms, with a higher risk of making landfall this year. There are a lot of cautions out there. We've had 14 straight months of record-high ocean surface temperatures, and storms that form above warmer, deeper water tend to be worse. [25:00] Not only are the ocean surface temperatures above average, they are above average in a way mimicking the temperatures of the worst earlier hurricane seasons. Ocean temperatures are already as high as normal September ocean temperatures. About 95% of hurricanes happen in September and October in a normal year. [25:52] The second factor is we are shifting from El Niño to La Niña conditions. In La Niña conditions, the wind shear that would typically break up storms doesn't occur so storms are more severe. Justin notes even the water at the beach is warmer this year, from taking his family to the beach. Be prepared for hurricanes. [28:26] Hilary discusses gender-based bias in AI large language models. The models mimic human traits. Large language models are trained on human writings so they have the biases that humans have. It can pick resumes that match the employees you already have, which may be predominantly white men. At Amazon, AI systematically disadvantaged women applicants. [30:06] Scientists haven't figured out all of the reasons large language models make the choices they make. Even the use of pronouns in questionnaires changes how the answers are valued. Male-pronoun questionnaires valued achievement while female-pronoun questionnaires valued security. AI disadvantages the use of non-binary pronouns or statements on gender identity. [31:08] June is Pride Month. Is technology the next frontier of where we need to be conscious of inherent bias and how we actively fight that in the workplace? Look at technology with a grain of salt. If scientists can't tell why bias is in AI, don't assume you know why it's in there. Watch for it. [32:24] The year 2024 will have the most people voting in elections around the world ever. New leadership will come up with new standards. Change or uncertainty will lead to volatility. A rise in populist nationalism is happening in many countries, involving different trade dynamics. You should already have started to prepare for changes if you have international operations. [35:23] Morgan hopes that all the things we are preparing for this year don't happen. Risk managers hope none of the measures they put in place have to be enacted. The status quo is success but be prepared. Morgan says that from 2020 until now has just been tiring! [36:45] Hilary hopes for more interesting data breaches; she's tired of exposed S3 buckets, failures of basic MFA implementation, and people making dumb mistakes. She gets very excited about hefty SEC fines over cyber failures. She supports businesses learning one way or another. She says there has been a 12-fold increase in cyber disclosures in the first quarter of SEC filing. [38:08] Seeing progress there and seeing large fines translate into better risk management is exciting. Businesses are following the regulations. [39:12] Justin congratulates Morgan and Hilary on the Azbee wins. Any listener who wants to read more can go to RMMagazine.com. The special digital edition is for members only. We talked about the Merchant Marine Academy, being a merchant mariner, and how they fit into national security. What is the Military Sealift Command thing, and why does it keep confusing the counting of Navy ships? What is the Jones Act, and why is it so political? The US has a ghost fleet of ships staged on both US coasts in case WWIII kicks off—but where are the people? Who were the most famous merchant mariners? What went wrong with the USS Bonhomme Richard fire response? Why is Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge still not cleaned up? Which US military branch is the biggest merchant mariner customer? Hint….its NOT the Navy. Tune in for answers to all of the above—and more! John is the founder and CEO of gCaptain and author of Fire on The Horizon. He is licensed to captain the world's largest ships, has sailed from ports worldwide, and managed billion-dollar offshore construction projects in some of the world's harshest marine environments. This week on the Lead to Win Podcast, we visit Lauren Cruz. Lauren graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2006 and spent the following 5 years as a Naval Flight Officer on board the P-3C Orion aircraft, hunting submarines and Somalian pirates (including those who took Captain Phillips captive in 2009), and flying surveillance and reconnaissance missions in the Persian Gulf. She then served for 3.5 years at the White House as a communications officer (alongside Atlas Aultman, another guest of the show). In 2015, Lauren left the Navy and began a career in Financial Crimes Compliance and Fraud Prevention in NYC. She has worked for EY (Ernst & Young), PayPal, and recently accepted a position with Goldman Sachs. Throughout her career, Lauren has enjoyed great success employing what she now knows is called “compassionate leadership”. In short, she makes it a point to be curious about and empathetic toward the individuals she works with. Not only does she find work much more enjoyable this way, but the results she has gotten have been overwhelmingly positive. Episode Takeaways: Compassionate leadership involves being curious and empathetic towards employees, which leads to happier and more loyal team members. Leaders should balance compassion with accountability and drive results by being curious about their employees' lives and experiences. The five Cs of compassionate leadership are consciousness, compassion, curiosity, competence, and courage. Leaders should be aware of biases, such as the fundamental attribution error, and strive to avoid judging others unfairly. Leaders should practice active listening and empathy to better understand the people they lead. Billy Ray discusses various movies he has worked on, including 'Breach' and 'Shattered Glass,' and delves into the complexities of understanding characters like Robert Hansen. He explores the themes of deception, confirmation bias, and the power of storytelling in politics. Billy emphasizes the importance of understanding conservative voters' fear of chaos and the need for Democrats to rebrand themselves as agents of stability and freedom. He also discusses the abortion issue and suggests effective messaging strategies for Democrats. Billy and Jen discuss the importance of Democrats appealing to the middle ground and avoiding extreme positions. They highlight the need for Democrats to call out the left and distance themselves from radical ideas that alienate voters. They also emphasize the power of framing the election as a choice between an American and an extremist, rather than a Democrat and a Republican. The conversation touches on topics such as LGBTQ+ rights, cult mentality, breaking the frame in political discussions, and the importance of addressing local issues. Overall, the conversation provides insights into effective messaging and strategy for Democrats. Billy Ray is an American screenwriter and film director. Back in the fall we were "hacked" by people "we don't know" and we lost a bunch of episodes. Well, we never actually lost the episodes. We still have every one, and we'll periodically post them from time to time. Here's the episode with R-Dog. It was awesome, unlike the "unknowns" who "hacked" us. Prepare your fragile sensibilities because we've got special guest Ryan "R-Dog" Howard unleashing unfiltered truths and tossing out sass like dirty laundry in the dorm. We'll kick things off with a “heartwarming” stroll down cinematic memory lane discussing "Captain Phillips," only to be hijacked by Wilson—yeah, a bloody volleyball steals the show. Naked chaos? Got it. Weiner jokes? Coming at you every damn week. Our Zoom room is no holy sanctuary; it's more an unhinged, unsolicited nude-fest with a side of group showers. It's not weird; it's bonding, right? Or perhaps just a reminder that you should've taken that left turn at Albuquerque. We're serving up our dysfunctional family dinner chat on beans, barbecues, and the quest for the Big O—because why the hell not blend food and sex in a chaotic orgy of conversation? Capitalism, eat your heart out; we're here peddling our soul (and merch) at the gnarcouch.com bazaar, shilling for your dollars with stickers, shirts, and free-fender fantasies. Between the technical glitches and tales of mountain biking majesty—with R-Dog dishing on the sanctity of not giving a rat's ass about competition—we keep it as real as a kick to the shins. Speaking of reality checks, we've got group therapy sessions for past Rampage and Joyride atrocities and a shared moment of shame for anyone who ever thought big bike parks could buy happiness. And because we're generous like that, we'll school you in the ways of the Gnar Couch skater, critique infield influencers, and thrill you with accounts of R-Dog's infamous leg rehab saga—all while never deviating from our signature style: sarcasm so thick you could spread it on toast. Finally, get ready for a sugar high of caffeine-fueled rants and the deep philosophical musings of whether "Anal and the Dishes" is a provocative track or the story of our lives. So, spike your helmets, crack open a cold one and join us for the descent into madness—Gnar Couch style. Let's roll out this shitshow!

Actor, comedian and playwright John Ross Bowie (Brushstroke) joins to discuss the 1954 animated adaptation of George Orwell's ANIMAL FARM featuring the voices of Gordon Heath and Maurice Denham. Co-directed by John Halas and Joy Batchelor, ANIMAL FARM is a beast fable symbolizing decades of Russian history as an animal uprising on a brutally-maintained farm. Partially funded by the CIA's Office of Policy Coordination, ANIMAL FARM was intended as a covert piece of anti-communist propaganda, but performed poorly at the box office, eventually finding its biggest audience in American classrooms. We delve into this animated oddity in the context of Bowie's new play, BRUSHSTROKE, a Cold War comedy thriller dealing with the CIA's involvement in the modern art movement. Plus, we leave room for some off-topic diversions into The Secret of NIMH, The Green Berets, No Way Out, Mike Leigh, Andy Serkis, Captain America, Captain Phillips and much, much more!ANIMAL FARM is currently streaming for free on Freevee and Tubi.BRUSHSTROKE is currently playing at the Odyssey Theater in Los Angeles.Tickets at: https://odysseytheatre.com/tickets/?eid=111850

Once again we welcome back trendsetter and Buzzer record smasher Mark Monstroski for a follow up to the episode that originally set the Buzzer record (and we liked that one). All the boys put on their thermal undies and braved the bitter cold of John having to watch Frozen II instead of whatever 3 hour epic Scorsese or Ridley released this week. This week we welcome back Mark Monstroski to head to the stars! We discuss the newly released 'Napoleon', the 2019 film year, and we give 'Ad Astra' a re-watch. We're a positive film podcast who buzzes each other with drink penalties when we speak negatively, and Mark is our most buzzed guest three times over! What did we think of Ridley Scott's new biopic, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby, and what did we think of James Gray's “Heart of Darkness in space”, starring Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, and Donald Sutherland? Attack the roles that are easy to get, make your name, and once you've made a mark, tell your agent, Hey, give me some opportunities that I can use to stretch myself creatively.Actor and Director Maximilian Carlo Martini was born in New York. His father was a Roman sculptor and Doctor of Philosophy and Phenomenology, and his mother was a law enforcement officer in Texas. Curiously enough, Max Martini's trajectory in Hollywood was strongly influenced by both parents, his father instilling curiosity for all things creative, and his mother inspiring him for law enforcement and military roles, in which he made his name on the big screen. A few frustrating experiences as a young actor got Max coming in and out of acting, so he decided to focus on his love for fine arts and attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, where he received his BFA in painting and sculpture. After college, although he was working on movies and TV, he wasn't emotionally invested in becoming a successful actor. With that mindset, he disdainfully attended a casting and landed his first massive role in the movie "Contact" with Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, and James Wood, directed by Robert Zemeckis. Max starred in Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy, David Mamet's "Red Belt," Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim," and Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips," and the TV series "The Purge," to name some titles of his extensive career. He is also heavily involved in charitable work benefiting veterans and works closely with Warriors Heart Addiction and PTSD Treatment Center and the Special Operations Charity Network.Throughout this episode, you'll hear about Max's upbringing and relationship with acting, which initially had several ups and downs. You'll also hear how identifying his castability catapulted Max's career and his thoughts on self-tapes, AI, and negative feedback. In addition, Max shares valuable tips on how to own a room during auditions, how he would approach the industry if he were a young actor today, and much more.Tune in to Episode 93 of Hollywood Dream Maker and get Max's precious insight on how to make your mark in Hollywood.
