He has written numerous successful films, including the first Hunger Games movie, Captain Phillips, and Richard Jewell, earning an Oscar nomination for the second film. AND somehow I am lucky enough to sit down with him. He just released his first novel and it's a big deal. When greatness comes to you like this, pay attention. Burn the Water is a new YA dystopian romance novel by Hunger Games screenwriter Billy Ray, released on March 3, 2026, by Scholastic Press. It is a "Romeo and Juliet" style story set in a submerged 2425 London, where two teenagers from rival, warring factions—the Rogues and the Crowns—fall in love.Find Billy's Brand New Book, Burn the Water- OUT NOW! _____________________________________________________________________________Then later,We welcome Tui Sutherland over to congratulate her on the release of her SIXTEENTH precious little dragon egg!! Billy Ray is best-known for his work as the Oscar-nominated and critically acclaimed screenwriter behind Captain Phillips, The Hunger Games, and the highly anticipated adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping. In this first installment of an epic dystopian duology, Ray delivers a searing reimagining of Romeo and Juliet, set in a drowned London ravaged by climate change and centuries of war. BURN THE WATER marks his first transition to novel-writing. The year is 2425, and London is unrecognizable—a sea of decaying skyscrapers, submerged streets, and shattered remnants of a once-great city. Two armies—the Rogues and the Crowns—have waged war for generations, locked in a brutal battle over a world long lost to the sea. Rafe, the ruthless and magnetic leader of the Rogue army, and Jule, the fiercest warrior the Crown army has ever known, are sworn enemies by birth. Both destined to lead their factions to victory after centuries of bloodshed—until they fall for each other. Their love is forbidden, dangerous, and utterly consuming. As Rafe and Jule risk everything to protect one another amid the violence, a new and even greater threat emerges from the water, one that could destroy both armies, and what's left of their world. To survive, they must challenge everything they've been taught and convince their people that love is stronger than hate in a world where peace has always been impossible. Gritty, emotional, and sweeping, BURN THE WATER is a haunting exploration of generational conflict, sacrifice, and the belief that love is bigger than all of us.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Greg Alba, Aaron Alexander, & Jon Maturan react to The Bourne Supremacy (2004), the intense, propulsive sequel that redefined modern action thrillers under the direction of Paul Greengrass (United 93, Captain Phillips). Building on the grounded realism of The Bourne Identity, this chapter pushes Jason Bourne deeper into paranoia, grief, and relentless pursuit as his past refuses to stay buried. The film follows Jason Bourne (Matt Damon – The Martian, Good Will Hunting) as he's pulled back into the world of covert assassinations after being framed for a CIA operation gone wrong. Haunted by guilt and determined to uncover the truth, Bourne becomes both hunter and hunted across Europe. Key figures in the conspiracy include Pamela Landy (Joan Allen – The Contender, Pleasantville), a sharp CIA deputy director trying to untangle Bourne from the agency's darkest secrets, and Kirill (Karl Urban – The Boys, Dredd), a ruthless assassin whose pursuit leads to some of the franchise's most visceral confrontations. Iconic moments from the film include the explosive Moscow car chase, often cited as one of the greatest chase sequences ever filmed; Bourne's brutal apartment fight with Kirill; the tense Berlin sequences; and the emotionally devastating revelation involving Marie (Franka Potente – Run Lola Run, The Conjuring 2). With its handheld cinematography, pounding urgency, and morally complex storytelling, The Bourne Supremacy elevated the franchise into a defining force of 2000s action cinema. Composer Henry Jackman (whose previous work includes Captain America: The Winter Soldier, its sequel Civil War, and Captain Phillips), discusses turning his hand to a huge gaming franchise with Battlefield 6. He talks about some of the similarities and differences between the two mediums, still having plenty of budget to work with, including orchestral sessions, and how nu-metal legend Fred Durst became involved in proceedings.
INTELLIGENCE AND CALCULATION IN THE CRUCIBLE OF COMMAND Colleague Admiral James Stavridis. Admiral Stavridis discusses leadership lessons from his book To Risk It All. He highlights Admiral George Dewey's victory at Manila Bay, which relied on gathering human intelligence from diplomats in the absence of modern technology. Conversely, he analyzes Admiral Bill Halsey's failure at Leyte Gulf, where poor communication and impulsive decision-making led him to abandon the landing force based on misleading intelligence. Stavridis also profiles Admiral Michelle Howard's calculated risk-taking during the Maersk Alabama rescue, noting her ability to weigh the life-or-death consequences for Captain Phillips without letting career anxieties paralyze her decision-making. The events were depicted in a Hollywood blockbuster called “Captain Phillips” starring Tom Hanks. Brian and his firm countered a massive Hollywood publicity campaign that portrayed Captain Phillips as a hero and the crew as lazy layabouts, when in fact the exact opposite was true. The case resulted in a confidential settlement for each crew member. It also changed the way the shipping industry provides security to the men and women who travel in dangerous, pirate-infested waters Guest Bio: Brian Beckcom Brian Beckcom is one of the leading lawyers of his generation. 1. Gathering Intelligence and Weighing Consequences AUTHOR NAME: Admiral James Stavridis, United States Navy (Retired) BOOK TITLE: To Risk It All: Nine Conflicts and the Crucible of Decision This segment covers leadership lessons: gathering intelligence and weighing consequences. George Dewey exemplifies successful intelligence gathering at Manila Bay by contacting diplomats for sketch maps. Conversely, Bill Halsey'sfailure at Leyte Gulf highlights the danger of imperfect intelligence and impulsiveness. Rear Admiral Michelle Howardsuccessfully measured consequences during the high-risk Captain Phillips hostage rescue. 1941 HICKAM FIELD
In April of 2009 four Somali pirates boarded the Maersk Alabama, a US/Danish cargo ship off the coast of Africa, a notorious piracy hotspot. The crew aboard the Alabama did everything they could to keep the pirates from gaining control of the ship, however the pirates still held multiple crew members hostage, including Captain Richard Phillips. After chief engineer, Mike Perry, managed to capture one of the pirates, the crew attempted to negotiate an exchange of hostages. However the failed attempt led to Captain Phillips being held on a lifeboat with the pirates, who demanded a $2 million ransom for his release. The captain's capture resulted in a standoff between the pirates and the US Navy, including Navy SEAL Team Six.
Pete Scobell is a former U.S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant with 17 years of service, including six combat deployments, best known as the real-life member of the SEAL team that rescued Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in 2009, inspiring the film Captain Phillips. Scobell served in the United States Navy as both an enlisted and officer in the SEAL Teams. He served at SEAL Team EIGHT, ONE, SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE and Naval Special Warfare Development Group. Prior to the Navy, Pete was a ski racer in New York State and the Pennsylvania State Champion in the Pole Vault. While working as a lifeguard for the state of Pennsylvania, he was awarded the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources Heroism Award for a rescue he made at Presque Isle State Park. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Political Science, he was the third (and last) enlisted SEAL selected to attend the United States Naval Academy. After a four-year hiatus from pole vaulting, he walked onto the Naval Academy Track Team (Division I), set the freshman record, and placed in the IC4As. He was also a starter on the A-side Naval Academy Rugby team. Scobell suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from an explosion in Afghanistan in 2010, which ended his active duty career. After rigorous rehabilitation at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, he transformed his experiences into advocacy for TBI and PTSD recovery, speaking to military audiences and veterans' groups. Transitioning to civilian life, Scobell pursued passions in music, releasing country-Americana albums like Wild (2015) as the Pete Scobell Band, acting in films such as Plane (2023) alongside Gerard Butler, and competing as a professional skier after a 17-year hiatus. A father of three and husband, he consults on security, writes, and motivates others through resilience stories, emphasizing mental health and second chances. Richard Phillips (born May 16, 1955) is an American merchant mariner and author who served as captain of the MV Maersk Alabama during it's hijacking by the Somali Pirates in 2009. There were a few files that were lost and thankfully recovered. Tune in to our conversation from 2021 where Richard Phillips discusses his heroic actions, his biopic, Boston Sports and more.
In this explosive episode of The Crux True Survival Story Podcast, hosts Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen dive into five days of pure terror on the high seas. When four armed Somali pirates stormed the Maersk Alabama in 2009, Captain Richard Phillips made a split-second decision that would either save his crew—or cost him his life. What followed was a heart-pounding standoff in a sweltering lifeboat with AK-47-wielding captors, while Navy SEALs prepared for one of the most precise rescue shots in military history. But here's the twist: was Phillips the hero Hollywood portrayed, or did his reckless decisions put everyone in danger? Kaycee and Julie unpack the shocking controversies, the three-bullet rescue that captivated the world, and why Phillips' own crew sued him. Plus, they reveal the terrifying reality of modern piracy—it's bigger, deadlier, and closer to your daily life than you think. 00:00 Introduction to Case Knives 00:30 Exciting News: Disaster Strikes Expands to Patreon 01:21 Meet Your Hosts: Casey and Julie 01:42 Listener Shoutout and Story Request 02:10 The Story of Captain Richard Phillips Begins 06:30 Background on Somali Piracy 12:38 Ruff Greens 13:45 The Pirate Attack on Maersk Alabama 20:55 The Ideal Prisoner Exchange 21:30 Phillips' Lifeboat Ordeal 23:43 Navy to the Rescue 27:08 The Aftermath and Controversy 29:05 Modern Piracy: A Continuing Threat 35:07 The Maersk Alabama's Legacy 37:42 Lessons from Captain Phillips 41:59 Final Thoughts and Listener Engagement Patreon patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! Und jetzt alle: Boots - boots - boots - boots - movin' up an' down again! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We're so excited to release our interview with Shattered Glass director Billy Ray, who was kind enough to indulge all our questions about our favorite movie, like:What happened between the scene where Chloe Sevigny confronts Peter Sarsgaard for firing Stephen and the next day, when she leads the team in applauding him for his brave decision? Where does Shattered Glass rank in the pantheon of movies Ray's written over the course of his career, which include blockbusters like The Hunger Games and Captain Phillips? And why does Ray think Stephen Glass kept digging himself deeper and deeper, inventing new lies right up until he was fired for fabricating dozens of stories?Billy Ray was a great sport, although he did give us shit for interviewing Adam Penenberg, the reporter who first busted Glass in a story for Forbes Digital Tool, before him. "I cannot understand why I wasn't your first fucking guest," he told us—"Who the hell did you interview before me? The three grips?" We hope you'll enjoy listening to our conversation with director Billy Ray as much as we enjoyed recording it. Hosts: Josh Feit and Erica C. BarnettEdited by: Erica C. BarnettSend us a text! David spoke with Sen. Tanya Vyhovsky and and Billy Ray. With Sen. Vyhovsky, the discussion focused on the education bills. How they will affect tax rates, small schools and more. Is the legislation (Governor's guidelines and Foundation Formula) going save Vermonter's money or improve the quality and access for our kids? With Billy Ray, Screenwriter of Captain Phillips, The Hunger Games and more, also political activist/consultant, we spoke about how the Democrats are not messaging well and what they can do to accurately reflect their values and reach more voters.
In December 2013, Australian journalist Peter Greste, alongside fellow Al Jazeera colleagues Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, were arrested in Cairo, Egypt under charges of holding illegal meetings with the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation declared as a terrorist group by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. Kriv Stenders is a prolific Australian filmmaker, with his work spanning features, documentaries, and TV series. His latest film, The Correspondent, translates this period of Greste's life, as documented in his 2017 memoir The First Casualty, to screen, with Richard Roxburgh portraying the award winning journalist. The Correspondent is a salient reminder of the need for a global free press, and it arrives at a time where journalists around the world, even Australia, are being vilified, condemned, or at worse, being imprisoned or murdered for their work. While The Correspondent considers the legal battles that Greste and his journalistic colleagues endured between 2013 through to 2015, when Greste was released, the film then reflects on another attack on journalists, with Stenders and writer Peter Duncan taking us to another part of Greste's life, when he worked alongside Kate Peyton (portrayed by Yael Stone) in Mogadishu, Somalia in 2011. These scenes act as an insight to the complex ways that reporting from war zones leads to the aggressors violently controlling the passage of information, with The Correspondent then amplifying the message of advocating for free press.A central aspect to that advocacy is Richard Roxburgh's turn as Peter Greste. Arguably, this is the finest performance of Richard Roxburgh's career, with the weight of expectation, trauma, uncertainty, and grief lingering on his mind, often only appearing through glances or brief looks at his fellow inmates. Roxburgh echoes the work of Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, another film which sees the acclaimed actor give a career best turn, and in doing so, brings to life Greste in an empathetic and supportive manner. It is as if this is the only performance that matters in his career. It's powerful stuff. I carry that in mind when I sit down to discuss the film with Kriv Stenders, oddly for the first time in my career. I've long admired Stenders work, from having caught The Illustrated Family Doctor in a small screen at Luna Cinemas Leederville, to being knocked off my feet with Boxing Day and Lucky Country. He then took his filmmaking to a new level with Red Dog and Red Dog: True Blue, and with the back of this run of films, he has examined the role that Australian stories and voices have on our cultural identity. Few filmmakers in Australian cinema get more than one or two films, and yet Stenders has crafted an enduring filmography that comments on and furthers our understanding of what Australian culture, identity, and cinema, can be. While this is my first time talking with Kriv, I know it won't be my last. The Correspondent arrives in Australian cinemas on 17 April 2025, with Q&A screenings continuing to take place at select cinemas. Make sure to check your local cinema guide for session details. Admiral McRaven is a four-star admiral who oversaw the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden; his forces were responsible for the capture of Saddam Hussein; and he also led the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, who was held hostage by Somali pirates (which became the basis for the blockbuster movie, Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks). As commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Admiral McRaven led a force of 72,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. After his military career, he served as chancellor of the University of Texas System, overseeing 14 institutions, 220,000 students, 20,000 faculty and more than 80,000 health care professionals, researchers, and staff. In 2014, he gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas that went viral, titled, “If You Want To Change The World, Start Off By Making Your Bed.” He is also the author of several books, including Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations and the New York Times Bestseller, Make Your Bed. In this episode we discuss the following: When Admiral McRaven asked his Master Chief how to earn the respect of the soldiers, he responded: “Work hard. Come early. Stay late. Work on the weekends.” You don't have to be the most talented to succeed. But regardless of talent, everyone can work hard. You will earn the respect of others if they know you are working hard on their behalf. Know your business. As a Navy SEAL that meant knowing all about weapons, diving, and demolition. It also meant knowing the details of the playbook. For example, if you're in an ambush, first guy goes left, second guy goes right. When Admiral McRaven's solider accidentally blew off the leg of his colleague, the Master Chief wanted to go relatively easy on the solider. But Admiral McRaven believed they needed to “throw the book at him.” And through the tough love of accountability, the solider bounced back and became Sailor of the Year. How do you gain respect of those you lead? Work hard and be a good person. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When I asked Admiral McRaven, “Did you ever get scared?” he laughed out loud: “Yeah, of course. You're scared all the time.” But he was able to fall back on his training and barricade his fears to help him get through countless life-threatening situations.
