On July 16 th in New Mexico, people commemorate two devastating events: the first atomic bomb test at the Trinity Site in 1945 in south central New Mexico, and the world's largest uranium spill in 1979 when an earthen dam broke at the United Nuclear Corporation's uranium mill tailing pond, releasing 1,100 tons of radioactive waste and 94 million gallons of radioactive water into the Rio Puerco, which flowed to Sanders, Arizona. Both events left sick and dying people, environmental destruction and still unresolved concerns today. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ccnsupdate/support

2007 was the year that everything changed for the governments of the UK. In England, Tony Blair stepped down as Prime Minister after an unprecedented series of electoral wins for Labour, in Scotland the SNP were forming their first government as a minority in Holyrood, in Northern Ireland the institutional 'moderate' unionists were being supplanted by the DUP, and in Wales the traditions of nationalism and socialism were about to combine to form the 'One Wales' government of Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru. For Plaid Cymru, the opportunity to go into government for the first time was a relatively easy decision but for Labour, the very idea of going into a coalition with the 'nats' exposed deep divisions between the party's British, Welsh, 'materialist', 'devolutionist', and traditionalist wings. Public and private battles were fought over the proposal and it can be argued that the resulting stable government between the two parties changed Welsh politics forever. In this episode, recorded between Plaid Cymru & Welsh Labour Spring Conferences 2023 and as the parties again are in a governing agreement together in the Senedd, we speak with Dr Dai Moon who has written about the now infamous 2007 Labour Conference and its legacy on Welsh Labour and Welsh politics more broadly. You can find Dai on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/David_S_Moon And you can read one of Dai's papers on the 2007 conference here: https://purehost.bath.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/134634001/Internationalists_not_Nationalists_CBH.F.pdf You can find us on most social platforms @HiraethPod, including Twitter: https://twitter.com/HiraethPod And if you are enjoying the pod, please leave us a rating or review in your podcast app of choice and, if you are able to do so, please consider supporting us from just £3/month on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/hiraethpod

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a friend is “one joined to another in mutual benevolence and intimacy. Not ordinarily applied to lovers or relatives…a boon companion.” It first appears in “Beowolf” in 1018 A.D. as “freondum.” Though the opposite of “fiend,” both words root in the same Germanic word soup for “love” and “hate,” so therefore inextricably intertwined. Here, two old friends, Teresa Jordan and Judith Freeman, both remarkable and accomplished writers and artists, born and bred in the American West, examine their own enduring relationship through the lens of Judith's latest novel, the incisive, insightful, at times ruthless “MacArthur Park.” The novel's core finds two older women, both accomplished writers and artists, born and bred in the American West, attempting to re-kindle their lifelong friendship after intimate convolutions blew them apart. Spoiler alert: marrying the same man may become a problem. No, not Teresa and Judith; her characters Verna and Jolene as they road trip across the West towards some notion of their shared childhood. What destroys friendships? Can good intentions alone heal those implosive moments of toxic intimacy almost inevitable in friendships? Who here has not lost a friend?SHOW NOTES: Please spend some time on both their websites to appreciate the depth and quality of their respective creativity.Judith Freeman: https://judithfreemanbooks.com/Discussed in the Podcast:Carolee Schneeman: https://www.moma.org/artists/7712Judy Chicago: https://www.judychicago.com/Elena Ferante: http://elenaferrante.comValeria Luiselli: “Lost Children Archive”: https://www.valerialuiselli.com/ Here's great conversation about writing with Judith's friend Barbara Feldon, yes, that Barbara, from “Get Smart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NM1Vi-q1dg A special shout-out for her novel “Red Water” where Judith imagines John D. Forage brassicas are simply an amazing, low cost feed for our ruminant species. Over 300,000 ha of brassicas are planted in New Zealand annually and thankfully, animal health disorders are not particularly common despite the huge numbers of animals that eat brassicas each year. Very occasionally, grazing animals might experience an animal health disorder called SMCO toxicity. SMCO is a non-protein sulphur-nitrogen compound that sometimes accumulates in brassica crops and brassica weed species. Most cases of SMCO toxicity are seen when animals graze forage brassica crops during late winter and early to mid spring (August, September, October in New Zealand) when plants are undergoing fresh growth and reproductive development with increasing daylength and warmer, spring days. Cases present with signs associated with haemolytic anaemia, including red water (red coloured urine). Presented by New Zealand veterinarian and nutritionist Dr Charlotte Westwood, this podcast takes us through all you ever wanted to know about SMCO toxicity. Because prevention is better than cure, the podcast focuses specifically on how to reduce risk of SMCO toxicity in your grazing animals. You can scroll through and find subheadings within this podcast as follows: Introduction to SMCO toxicity in ruminants: 2.32 What is SMCO and how is the animal affected? 5.00 Can we forage test for SMCO in brassicas? 13.00 What role does copper and selenium status of animals play in SMCO toxicity? 17.45 Clinical signs of SMCO toxicity? 21.15 Other causes of red water confused with SMCO toxicity. 28.10 Onion and SMCO toxicity – what's the link? 30.50 Why is SMCO toxicity more likely late winter / spring? 32.30 Grazing and feeding management of crops suspected contain high SMCO. 36.30 Why do brassicas contain SMCO and what soil and fertiliser-based factors influence SMCO accumulation by brassicas? 46.05

Red Water On September 11, 1857, a group of 120 emigrants en route to California was attacked and slaughtered by Mormon settlers and their Indian allies. Twenty years later, John D. Lee, a Mormon and a participant in the massacre, was executed by a firing squad at the same spot and thus entered history as the scapegoat for all those responsible for what came to be known as the Mountain Meadow Massacre in southern Utah. “Red Water,” by Judith Freeman, published in January 2002, is the story of the life of John D. Lee, as told by three of his nineteen wives. Judith Freeman describes early Mormon belief, the sense of persecution felt by the Mormons, and the sisterhood of his wives in marriage. Judith Freeman recommends “Why Did I Ever,” by Mary Robinson. Originally Broadcast: March 5, 2002

Welcome to week 7 of The Spotlight where Sarah Mae and Aaron highlight and discuss their favorite records! The first album that we featured this week was Earl Sweatshirt's long awaited 2018 record ‘Some Rap Songs' (SRS). A record that dives into Earls mental health (“Shattered Dreams”) grieving with the death of his father (“Playing Possum”), substance abuse ("Azucar") and his relationships with people he considered his friends (“Red Water”). Earl uses a series of vignettes to execute these themes and does it in a way that catches your attention. ‘SRS' is such a mature record sonically, it has a very dark undertone and includes a lo-fi and sample heavy production, which draws many comparisons to MF Doom's ‘Madvilliany'. Overall SRS is dark record that shows Earl in his most darkest moments but also growing/learning from those moments. The second album that we featured this week was UK singer/dancer/producer FKA twigs' 2014 record “LP1." This is her debut studio album which includes production from herself and UK artists like Arca, Sampha, and Dev Hynes (Blood Orange). A record that includes very cutting edge/dense production--something that wasn't being done at the time. Lyrically she focuses on the dualism between love and lust, reality and fantasy. We see that in tracks like “Give Up” where she sings about wanting to change for the benefit of a partner, which comes off as toxic and unhealthy. We also talk about her work as a dancer and how that has influenced her music, tracks like "Video Girl" touch on her biography as a backup dancer and how she doesn't want to be known merely as the girl from music videos where she's danced in. Overall, LP1 is a record that has a very euphoric feeling to it which sucks you into FKA twigs' reality. Make sure to give these records a listen! Join us for week 8 on November 4th for the next LIVE show! Mondays at 6pm (EST) on wgmuradio.com
