We can't believe we've done 200 episodes of the podcast, but here we are. We got to celebrate this milestone in front of an amazing crowd at the FNI Fast Fest screening in The Lighthouse Cinema in Dublin last week. We sat down with Cathy Brady and Mark O'Connor and had a wonderful chat about the life of a filmmaker in Ireland today. Cathy Brady is a two-time IFTA-winning director, having won Best Short in 2011 for her first film Small Change and again in 2013 for Morning, which was also selected for the BFI London Film Festival 2012 and won the Short Film Nominee prize for the European Film Awards at Cork Film Festival. In 2011, Brady directed the BIFA nominated short Rough Skin (written by Laura Lomas and starring Vicky McClure) as part of Channel 4's Coming Up scheme. Her short film, Wasted, competed at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2013. In the same year, Brady was named one of Screen Daily's ‘Stars of Tomorrow'. In 2014, Brady directed on the BAFTA-nominated drama-thriller series Glue. Most recently, Brady directed Stefanie Preissner's TV comedy series Can't Cope/Won't Cope for Dead Pan Pictures and RTE, which is currently showing on BBC Three. Her debut feature as writer-director, Wildfire, is currently in development, and will be produced by Carlo Cresto-Dina (The Wonders, Cannes Grand Jury Prize 2014) along with Cowboy Films. Mark O' Connor is a graduate of Film Operations and Production from Ballyfermot College and directing from The New York Film Academy. He also holds a masters in screenwriting from IADT. Mark made over 60 short films, before writing and directing his debut feature film ‘Between the Canals'. Between the Canals was highly acclaimed with Film Ireland calling it “The best Irish film in a long long time”. It was the acting debut for Barry Keoghan and many of the cast went on to star in leading roles in the hit RTE television series ‘Love Hate'. Mark's second feature film ‘King of the travellers' was selected for festivals around the world and received a UK and Irish cinema and DVD release and was released in 150 territories worldwide on VOD. ‘Stalker', Mark's third feature film won the Underground Film Festival and Runner up Prize at the Galway Film festival. Mark's fourth feature film ‘Cardboard Gangsters' was the highest grossing Irish film of the year and received 5 stars reviews. It won 6 awards at the Manchester Film Festival including Best Film, Best Actor, Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Director, and Film of the Festival. It also won Best Film at The Newport Beach Film Festival in Los Angeles. Worldwide rights to the film were bought by Netflix. Mark then wrote and directed a six-part crime drama for Virgin Media UK/Ireland called ‘Darklands'. It received critical acclaim and an average of 450,000 viewers per episode and was recently sold to Australian television network SBS. Mark is currently in development on a number of projects including a comedy drama ‘Oui Cannes' set in Ireland and France and is a major television series being produced by Samson Films. Joining Paul Webster is the extremely talented Gemma-Leah Devereux coming of the back of the recent release of her tour-de-force performance in Irish feature, The Bright Side directed by Ruth Meehan. @gemmaleahdevereux Gemma is an actor from Dublin who has worked extensively in TV and Film. She first came onto our screens in The Tudors where she played Lady Elizabeth Fitzgearld with Jonathan Rhys Meyers. She went on to make her film debut starring opposite Ross Noble in Stitches. Her next leading role in film was in the thriller Dartmoor Killing which won the National Film Award for Best Film. It was followed closely by dramady Get Up And Go starring with Killian Scott and Peter Coonan for which she got IFTA Nominated for Best Actress. Gemma-Leahs' recent roles for film include Amia McNamara in Broken Law alongside John Connors directed by Paddy Slattery, Ruth Shine in Citizen Lane opposite Tom Vaughan Lawler, directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan and Roisin in Cardboard Gangsters directed by Mark O'Connor. She earned huge success recently for her break out role as Liza Minnelli in the Oscar Nominated Biopic Judy opposite Renée Zellweger about Judy Garlands life. John Connors is an actor, writer, director and documentary filmmaker. From his breakout role as bomb maker Patrick in "Love/Hate". He has starred in hits like "Cardboard Gangsters", for which he won best actor at the Irish Film and television awards. He also made the documentary "Endless Sunshine on a Cloudy Day" about father and daughter Anthony and Jade McCann, who were both diagnosed with cancer within days of each other.I got to speak to John about his 3 favourite movies. Despite the the heartbreaking subject matter of the movie, Endless Sunshine is funny, inspiring & thought provoking in equal measures. The story is told from Jade’s perspective, through many of her social media posts as an influencer. The movie captures the raw, terrifying, tender & intimate moments of family life during a serious illness. The film won the coveted Audience Award at this year’s Dublin film festival & was praised for addressing the darker side of social media. Connors tells us how lockdown has made him appreciate what’s really important in life, family. John believes he may have contracted coronavirus near the start of the breakout when he showed flu like symptoms for a period of time. The Cardboard Gangsters star was not a high risk patient & was therefore refused a test like many others. John decided to self isolate for 14 days. He describes the symptoms he experienced including difficulty breathing.  Luckily Connors went on to make a full recovery. John & Paddy also discuss current events in the political world, the role of the media during lockdown & what it has resulted in. This week we welcome back an old friend in director and writer, Mark O'Connor. When we spoke to Mark in 2016 (chapter 48) and John Connors (Chapter 43) we heard about a project called "Cardboard Gangsters". Fastforward to today and Cardboard Gangsters is the highest grossing Irish film of 2017 and is entering its 6th week in Cinemas across the country.  Mark tells us about the project and what goes into producing a film like this. He won the World Cinematography Award for Documentary at Sundance 2010 for His and Hers, his debut feature documentary as a DOP. The Sundance jurors singled out the cinematography “for its Vermeer like qualities and formal restraint in conveying the power of ordinary emotional lives”. He was also the DOP on the multi-award winning short film Undressing My Mother, which screened at Cannes, was highly commended at Sundance and went on to win the European Academy Award for Best Short Film in 2005.Patrick’s Day, his first dramatic feature as DOP, received its world premiere at SXSW2014. The film went on to win Best Feature at Galway Film Fleadh and Best Film at Woodstock Film Festival where Michael was also awarded the prestigious Haskell Wexler Award for Best Cinematography. In granting the award Wexler, two-time Oscar award-winning DOP (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf) noted:”This award is based on what I consider true cinematography, not just on the traditional dexterity. He has that. Michael Lavelle’s work on Patrick’s Day shows a profound understanding of the story and his ability to employ DOP skills such as framing, lighting and camera movement is subtle in unselfconscious ways to subliminally involve the viewer…I give this award enthusiastically to an exceptional, talented filmmaker, Michael Lavelle.” – Haskell Wexler A.S.C. In 2015, Michael was nominated for an IFTA for Best Cinematography for his work on the film. From the Dark, his second dramatic feature as DOP and producer, was selected in competition at Fantastic Fest 2014 and Siches 2015. He recently completed principal photography as cinematographer on The Truth Commissioner and the Little Grey Fergie feature trilogy. He has just completed principal photography his eighth feature film as a DOP, the urban crime drama Cardboard Gangsters and has worked as 2nd Unit Cinematographer on 6 additional features. He has recently been invited to become a full member of the Irish Society of Cinematographers. Michael also works extensively as a writer/director. He wrote and directed the highly acclaimed short film Out of the Blue, described as boasting “excellent performances, vivid production design and an economy of story-telling that mark the director as a talent to look out for in the future”. The film won the Audience Award for Best Short Film at Cork Film Festival, Best Short at London Independent Film Festival, Best Short Comedy at Toronto Independent Film Festival and the Golden Djed at Luxor Film Festival. In 2011 he was nominated for the Berlinale Today Award for Mummy’s Little Helper, which he wrote and directed. In 2012, he wrote and directed the short film Cluck, which was nominated for an IFTA. His debut feature screenplay 6 Hours won the Irish Playwrights & Screenwriters Guild Award for Screenwriting at the National Film School where he did an MA in Screenwriting. The film is in development with Samson Films. Michael is attached to direct. In 2012 he attended the Binger Director’s Film Lab with the project. This week Danny & Mero continue to celebrate the borough and Irish film as they welcome writer and director Mark O'Connor to Fitzpatrick Castle.  Mark has given the world some of the best Irish cinema of the past decade with films like Between the Canals, Stalker and King of Travellers all gaining attention internationally. He has launch some of Ireland's best and brightest actors in Peter Coonan and John Connors and his latest offering, Cardboard Gangsters, is due for release this Autumn.  Besides talking all things film the lads also spoke to Mark about his love of skate boarding and martial arts, while Danny talks about his recent trip to see Bruce Springsteen and Mero gives us the low down on how the Ballybrack Bulls faired in just their second season.
