The fediverse offers an opportunity to rethink how trust and safety works in social media. In a decentralized environment, creating safe and welcoming places relies on community moderation, transparent governance, and innovation in tooling. No longer is one company making — and enforcing — its own rules. It's a collective responsibility.Samantha Lai, senior research analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Jaz-Michael King, the executive director of IFTAS, are here to explain how. Samantha co-authored a seminal paper, “Securing Federated Platforms: Collective Risks and Responses,” along with Twitter's former head of trust and safety, Yoel Roth. Jaz runs IFTAS, which offers trust and safety support for volunteer content moderators, community managers, admins and more. The two often collaborate and bring perspectives from the policy and operational sides. Highlights of this conversation:Moderation approaches in the fediverseRole of IFTASIs moderation better in the fediverse?Collective intel and resourcesScaling with AI tools and tooling overallMentioned in this episode:IFTAS Connect - https://connect.iftas.org/Samantha and Yoel Roth's paper for Journal of Online Trust and Safety - https://www.tsjournal.org/index.php/jots/article/view/171Bluesky composable moderation https://bsky.social/about/blog/4-13-2023-moderation

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an naoú lá is fiche de mhí Lúnasa. Is mise Niall Ó Cuileagáin. D'éirigh Phil Hogan as a phost mar Choimisinéir Trádála an Aontais Eorpaigh tráthnóna Dé Céadaoin. Tháinig sé chun solais go raibh sé i measc na ndaoine a bhí i láthair ag dinnéar Chumann Gailf an Oireachtais sa Chlochán an tseachtain seo caite. Sháraigh an ócáid seo na srianta Covid-19, go háirithe maidir leis an uasmhéid daoine a cheadaítear ag imeachtaí. Bhí Hogan faoi bhrú freisin mar gheall ar a chuid taistil in Éirinn tar éis teacht ar ais ón mBeilg. D'éirigh an tAire Talmhaíochta, Dara Calleary, agus Leas-Chathaoirleach an tSeanaid, Jerry Buttimer, as a gcuid post freisin níos luaithe sa tseachtain. Ghabh said leithscéal le muintir na hÉireann as a gcuid iompair. * Dúirt an t-imreoir sacair, Lionel Messi, go bhfuil sé ag iarraidh Barcelona a fhágáil an samhradh seo tar éis fiche bliain leis an gclub. De réir Messi, tá sé in ann an club a fhágáil saor in aisce mar gheall ar chlásal ina chonradh, ach ní aontaíonn an club leis an léirmhíniú seo. Tá cáil ar Messi mar cheann de na himreoirí is fearr i stair an tsacair. Tá sé ghradam Ballon d'Or buaite aige chomh maith le deich Sraith na Spáinne agus ceithre Shraith na Seaimpíní. * Beidh an scannán Gaeilge Arracht á thaispeáint i Meiriceá ag Féile Scannán Nashville i mí Dheireadh Fómhair. Baineann an scannán leis an nGorta Mór i gConamara agus ainmníodh é d'aon ghradam déag ag na IFTAs i mbliana. Bhí an scannán réidh le seoladh i mí Aibreáin ach cuireadh siar é mar gheall ar an bpaindéim. Mar sin féin, toisc go bhfuil Féile Scannán Nashville ar siúl ar líne i mbliana, beidh daoine in ann breathnú ar Arracht ón mbaile. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeile i Londain.
