I'd like to introduce you to author Jessica Stremer for today's episode! I've known Jessica since the very beginning of my kidlit journey. She was part of one of my first critique groups back in 2020. She quite literally helped shape my manuscript for my published picture book and many others. I had the joy of seeing many of the manuscripts she brought for critiques become published books out in the world including GREAT CARRIER REEF (a NY Public Library Best Book of the Year and JLG Gold Standard selection), LIGHTS OUT: A Movement to Help Migrating Birds, and FIRE ESCAPE: How Animals and Plants Survive Wildfires (a JLG Gold Standard selection). Jessica is an award winning author and actively encouraging presence in the kidlit world. I hope you enjoy today's interview and feel a spark of inspiration and excitement to fuel your own journey. Some Highlights: Several things you didn't know about wildfires and how they differ from mega fires. The scary experience of starting in one genre and moving into another. The many ways community has fueled her writing journey. Book clubs with her kids. Why write: “You never know who's going to read the book and the impact it will have on them.” Final words of advice: “Find ways to make opportunities for yourself and be gracious.” Links Mentioned

It is without doubt, a jewel in the crown of Waterford Attractions. In this week's episode of Back Chat With Maria McCann, I'm talking to one of the first people to have the idea of making use of the old disused railway Line, who had a vision for it, but by his own admission, it has more then exceeded his expectations.. . I also have someone who has made a business from it, by bringing groups to do the Waterford Camino, and a dedicated user of the fabulous amenity which is... the Waterford Greenway. You'll hear their passion for promoting and using it, and the pride in being part of making it happen. With Ger Barron, Michael Garland & Roddie Cleere

This week on the podcast, Derek and Andy W. review three new titles guaranteed to make you hyperventilate with excitement...so breathe deep and take in the good, comicy vapors. And speaking of which, they begin by discussing the new book by Spanish creator Max, Vapor (Fantagraphics). They start with a brief context on Max, whose past books include The Extended Dream of Mr. D. and Bardin the Superrealist. His latest work is just as surreal and dreamlike as the earlier ones, and the guys have a good time exploring the possible meanings embedded in the narrative. Next they turn to the new miniseries written and drawn by Jorge Corona, Feathers (Archaia/BOOM! Studios). In this inaugural issue we have a perfect mix of setup, teaser, and substantive storytelling. Andy and Derek focus on the detailed groundwork that Corona lays out in his story, one that is clearly intended for an all-age readership. Finally, the guys turn their attention to the latest creator-owned property from the ever-prolific Jonathan Hickman, The Dying and the Dead #1 (Image). On this title he reunites with Ryan Bodenheim -- whose early collaborations include A Red Mass for Mars and Secret -- and works with colorist Michael Garland. In fact, the guys spend a lot of time discussing Garland's use of color, which adds significantly to the art and especially to Hickman's storytelling. As with Corona's Feathers, this is definitely a series Derek and Andy plan to continue with, and when you throw in Vapor, you have this week's trifecta of Comics Alternative goodness.
Underrated artists, Sean Phillips, RoboCop: Last Stand by Frank Miller, Steven Grant, Korkut Öztekin, and Michael Garland (with covers by Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire) from BOOM!, Marvel and Star Wars, Baltimore: The Plague Ships by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, and Ben Stenbeck from Dark Horse, Guy Davis, Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and company, Daredevil by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee, Bendis, Superior Foes of Spider-Man by Nick Spencer, Steve Lieber, and Rachelle Rosenberg, Nova, Stray Bullets, omnipresent colorists, Suicide Risk by Mike Carey and Elena Casagrande from BOOM!, Zander Cannon’s Heck, and a whole mess more!
