Tomás Hardiman is a film producer and a survivor of childhood abuse. His recent documentary “The Days of Trees” tells the story of his own experience of childhood sexual abuse, and his long road to recovery. In this conversation, Tomás reflects on the years he spent in the dark, his gradual process of healing, and how he was able to convert his deepest childhood wound into a creative project - a documentary that is now impacting people all over the world. Gabor Maté had this to say about it: 'It's all about healing and transformation, a person finding themselves… I really urge you to see it. A beautiful film.' Here are some of the things we explore in this discussion: — How memory, shame, and repression often intertwine in trauma — Why Tomás almost walked away from the film — The role of creative work in transforming suffering — How Tomás has been able to forgive the seemingly unforgivable. And more. You can watch the film at https://thedaysoftrees.com/ and get 50% off if you use the code: TWU50 when purchasing. --- Tomás Hardiman holds a B.Comm from NUI Galway (1979) and an M.A. in Film and Television Studies from Dublin City University (1992). After graduation he worked in human resources in Dublin before living for a time in Toronto, where he began a professional career in the theatre as General Manager of Mercury Theatre Company. Following his return to Ireland he was appointed Marketing/Publicity Director of The Abbey Theatre where he worked from 1985 to 1993. He then returned to Galway where he ran his own communications and independent film production company, Parzival Productions. From October 2002 to November 2007 he was Managing Director of Galway Arts Centre and the Cúirt International Festival of Literature. He was a member of the board of Theatre Forum, the representative group for Irish arts organisations, from 2005-2007. He continues to produce and manage creative projects across multiple artforms and in 2013 completed a three-year training programme to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique. He produced eleven films between 1998 and 2023. Most recently he collaborated with acclaimed Irish writer/director Alan Gilsenan, to produce a loose trilogy of films about psychological trauma: Meetings with Ivor, The Meeting and The Days of Trees. The latter won the George Morrison Award for Best Documentary at the 2024 Irish Film and Television Awards. --- Interview Link: — Tomás' website - https://thedaysoftrees.com/

My guest this week is Shelly Palmer, who's an award winning composer, inventor, author, educator and a leading voice in technology. He is also an expert in Ai and it's integration into the workplace.   Shelly began his career as a composer for television, working with hundreds of brands, agencies, broadcasters, publishers and tech platforms on advertising and marketing campaigns such as Meow Mix, Burger King and The City of Las Vegas. He was honored at ASCAP's 13th Annual Film and Television Awards in the category of “Most Performed Television Themes.” He holds a patent for the underlying technology for Enhanced Television that's used by programs such as ABC's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and ESPN's Monday Night Football, which led him to pivot his career into technology. He is currently a Professor of Advanced Media in Residence at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and CEO of The Palmer Group, a consulting practice that helps Fortune 500 companies with technology, media and marketing. Shelly also covers tech and business for Fox 5 New York, and is a regular commentator for CNN and CNBC, and he offers a series of free technology courses via his Metacademy. During our interview we spoke about growing up in a music store, how a used synthesizer got him into the jingle business, how one of his patents took him from music into the world of technology, why AI is a skills amplifier, and so much more. By the way, I learned a lot about AI from Shelly's free Metacademy, which is something that you should check out. I spoke with Shelly from his studio in New York City.  On the intro I looked at how the RIAA's recent revenue numbers might be misleading.

This festive episode visits the pantomime: that uniquely British blend of song, dance, and silliness. Explaining its appeal is the cherished comic actor, Nina Wadia, who stars in Jack and the Beanstalk at York Theatre Royal. Nina, who grew up in India and Hong Kong, is the perfect guide to anyone who is not steeped in panto. She also discusses a career that includes her trailblazing sketch show, Goodness Gracious Me, the iconic British soap opera, EastEnders, and a terrible car crash that helped her embrace the vagaries of an actor's life. She has also appeared in many other comedies (Still Open All Hours, All About Me, The Vicar of Dibley) and dramatic roles (Holby City, White Teeth, Skins).Nina's many awards include the Chairman's Award at the Asian Women Awards in 2004, Best Comedy Performance and Best Onscreen Partnership at the 2009 British Soap Awards, and the Outstanding Achievement in Television Award at the Asian Awards in 2013. She was awarded an OBE in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to entertainment and charity. Jack and the Beanstalk is at York Theatre Royal until 7 January 2024. "Bad Sisters" follows the story of 5 sisters, played by Eve Hewson, Sarah Greene, Eva Birthistle, and Anne-Marie Duff. The Bareilles sisters revealed they recently binged the show, when Sara recommended it to her sister. Together, they discuss the dark comedy, reveal the shows they can't stop re-watching ("Game of Thrones," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent") and why they loved Sharon Horgan's newest comedy. When Grace's awful husband, John-Paul, dies, the audience quickly realizes one of the Garvey sisters may have killed him. Darryl McCormack and Brian Gleeson play brothers who are handling John-Paul's life insurance pay out. Together, they decide to investigate if John-Paul was murdered, in the hopes of not having to pay the large sum of life insurance Grace is owed. It's World Pride 2023 and the queer globe is converging on Sydney Australia to celebrate diversity, inclusion, community and fabulousness! To mark this momentous event the STAGES podcast is saluting the cast of captivating drag divas and personalities who have been featured on the podcast during the past 5 seasons. They are artists who have appeared on national and global stages; thrilling audiences, making a difference, healing community and expressing unique and wondrous talents. We spotlight these episodes so you can savour a second listen - or so you can sample the delights of these entertainers for the very first time. A Diva a day for each day of World Pride! Strykermeyer is a drag performer of unique powers and enormous skill. His work has enamoured audiences around the world. His ability to conjure a crowd is harnessed with immense theatricality; drawn from the combination of idiosyncratic invention in performance; and the greasepaints that contribute to the creation of an arresting and hypnotic aesthetic. Migrating to Australia as a boy from the UK, his family found residence in the Goldfields town of Kambalda in Western Australia. The contrast of geography and climate built a resilience in the young Stryker and forced avenues to escape - in imagination and by train! Landing in Perth in the 70s he entered his first nightclub - Matches on William street. The lure of the stage called and his place in the world was found. This was the time of a different drag scene. Experimental and exciting, it drew a queer community together and launched the careers of a bounty of burgeoning artists. Established performer Audrey Woodstock-Rose guided Stryker in the early days providing lessons in stagecraft and an appreciation of Asian theatre styles such as Kabuki, Noh, and Butoh; influences that resonate in Stryker's performance repertoire. Early song choices that supported his developing style included Gary Numan's Are Friends Electric? and Iggy Pop's I'm Bored, which he performed in ‘boy drag'. Considered one of the best make-up artists in Australia, Stryker contributed to the drag aesthetic on the film Priscilla - Queen of the Desert; ultimately being awarded the British Academy of Film and Television Award for Best Make-up and Hair Design in 1994. Today he continues to contribute a vivid artistic and considered temperament to queer and art spaces around W.A. Collaborations with fellow performer Ash Baroque inspire his creativity and ensure we continue to be enthralled by his vast talents. Stryker the man, is a modest gentleman who possesses years of experience and knowledge; eternally maintaining a passion for his art and craft. He is a treasured and gifted artist who has been an avant-garde presence on the queer scene for several decades. What a treat that he shares all of that in this riveting episode of the STAGES podcast! The STAGES podcast is available from Apple podcasts, Spotify and from where you find your favourite podcasts. Tune in daily for a history of drag in Sydney. Tell your friends, share the podcast, relish the stories and embrace your own sense of Pride.

In this section, Sam discusses the nuances and benefits of letting go. After this short discussion, Sam gives a warm welcome to the first of his two guests this week, the executive film producer of Back Home Again, Charmaine Harmond. Sam asks why this film was so moving for Charmaine. Answering the question, she explains her personal connection to the Fort McMurray wildfires that the movie is based on. While she was not in Fort McMurray during the fires, she grew up there previously and returned during the recovery period. Continuing to elaborate, she talks about how much Fort McMurray means to her. Because she has such a strong love for her hometown and also a passion for having conversations about mental health, she feels lucky to have had this opportunity to work on the film Back Home Again.Segment 2Returning from the break, Sam asks Charmaine about why they chose to go with an animated film as opposed to a live action one. She explains that, oftentimes, looking at live images of a traumatic event can be retraumatizing, and that using animation instead can help negate this impact. Elaborating further on what the movie hopes to achieve, Charmaine describes Back Home Again as a family movie made to inspire conversations about mental health and coming together as a community. Charmaine talks about how important conversations don't start because people don't know how to talk about mental health or to access support. Hopefully, this movie can be a tool in starting these conversations. Back Home Again, Charmaine continues, is a movie that shares the stories of real people who experienced the fires and the fallout after them. Through the telling of these stories, Charmaine hopes to help people to understand the enormity of the tragedy. She also talks about how she hopes to shed light on how people can experience and process the same traumatic events differently.Segment3 After the second break, Sam welcomes the screenwriter and director of the film Back Home Again, Michael Mankowksi. Answering why he chose to work on this project, Michael explains that he, like Charmaine, has personal experience with the fires and also worked with Red Cross during the re-entry period following the wildfires. Australian actor, writer and producer Jason Gann rose to international fame on the strength of "Wilfred" (2001), a curious short comedy film in which he played a anthropomorphized dog; the film was expanded into a pair of successful and critically acclaimed television shows in Australia (SBS 1, 2007, 2010) and America (FX, 2010-2014). Born and raised in Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, Australia, Gann fell in love with performing while in high school, and earned his bachelor's degree in acting from the University of Southern Queensland. After college, he worked in children's theater before moving into mainstream comedy and drama with the Queensland Theatre Company. In 2001, he teamed with a college friend, Adam Zwar, and director Tony Rogers to create a seven-minute comedy film called "Wilfred," about a young man and his over-protective dog, played by Gann. The short was well received on the festival circuit in both Australia and the United States, and inspired Gann and Zwar to expand the premise for a weekly series. While working on the show, which was initially rejected by several Australian television networks, Gann enjoyed minor roles in several Australian comedies before he and Zwar rose to fame as cast members on the popular sketch comedy series "The Wedge" (Network Ten, 2006-07), which also launched the career of actress Rebel Wilson. In 2007, Gann reprised his role as the foul-mouthed, drug-addled mutt in both seasons of the Australian version of the show, which won three Australia Academy of Cinema and Television Awards, including Best Television Comedy Series in its debut season. After the completion of the first season, Gann reprised his most famous character from "The Wedge," an addled professional athlete named Mark Wary, for the series "Mark Loves Sharon" (Network Ten, 2008), which spoofed reality television and hapless celebrities. Gann then traveled to the United States to oversee an American version of "Wilfred" for the FX cable network with producer David Zuckerman. With Gann reprising his role as Wilfred and Elijah Wood as his owner, the Stateside "Wilfred" became the highest-ranking debut sitcom for FX, and enjoyed three follow-up seasons before coming to an end in 2014.
