In a first (?) for The Autopsy of Dexter Morgan, Eric and Daniel give you their insight into not one, not two, but three Dexter Original Sin episodes! Patrick Gibson loses the terrible young Dexter Wig and gains a little juice, but is it enough? Daniel hates Teen Deb, Eric is baffled by lack of character development (or even just "stuff to do") for the returning secondary cast. They both don't remember Teen Deb's friend's name.

When you take on a role that somebody else made famous, it's not easy. Patrick Gibson knew when he started playing a younger version of Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan, a Miami serial killer, in Dexter: Original Sin, that risk is “farther to fall, in a way.” Hall “can't even be turning in his grave,” because he's still very much involved with the role. “It must be a weird thing to see somebody else step into that, but I have to say he was so generous and welcoming, I think because he was a part of it getting made.” What makes this origin story so fascinating is that we get to see a time when Dexter didn't have his murders perfected. “He really is relying on his base instincts and the lessons that he's picking up from just starting working in Miami Metro.” There's also “a loneliness at that time of his life that I think was interesting and felt human.” And while he's very much a psychopath, the audience is still rooting for him. “I think it's that weird Robin Hood moral gray area.” Gibson is ready for season two. “So much happens in season one, but there's also so much left unresolved.” See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We finally received an update on the second of the two WandaVision spinoffs in development, with the news that Marvel has enlisted Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas as showrunner for the untitled Vision series. Details remain sparse, but we know that Paul Bettany will reprise his role as the albino synthezoid and Marvel Studios is eyeing a 2026 Disney+ release. The 2024 summer movie season continues to struggle as newcomers Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie, essentially tied for the number one spot for the holiday weekend, each debuting at a muted $31 million; the worst Memorial Day weekend at the box office in almost 30 years. Furiosa particularly came in lower than estimates as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and receiving the same B+ Cinemascore. Advance tickets for Deadpool & Wolverine became available last Monday, resulting in an estimated 200,000 tickets sold for roughly $9 million and enough to break the record for first-day, R-rated ticket sales. Subsequently, at still two months out, it leads 2024 in all presales with all signs pointing to it being the year's first $100 million plus opening weekend.According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Wingard, director of the last two MonsterVerse films, will not return for the third installment due to timing issues. The split is amicable, with a future return possible. Netflix revealed a first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. Hemsworth replaces Henry Cavill for the final two seasons, with season 4's release date currently to be determined. Glen Powell revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he recently turned down major roles, including the upcoming Jurassic World film and a reboot of The Bourne Identity. Damon Lindelof, one of the co-creators of Lost and The Watchmen is officially behind the creative team for the upcoming Green Lantern series for DC Studios. Chris Mundy, the showrunner behind Netflix's crime series Ozark, as well as long-time DC comic author Tom King round out the creative team. Netflix released the first trailer for Beverly Hills: Axel F, featuring Eddie Murphy returning as Axel Foley. The new film, following the original 1984 release and its sequels, will stream starting July 3. Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to Showtime's Dexter announced casting of Patrick Gibson playing young Dexter, Molly Brown; his sister Debra, and Christian Slater portraying their adoptive father. The premiere date is yet to be announced. Warner Brothers dropped a new trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice that features a more extended look at the cast. The film debuts in theaters on September 6. Rian Johnson announces his next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, releasing on Netflix next year with Daniel Craig reprising his role and lots of other big Hollywood names being added to the cast daily, including Fleabag's Andrew Scott. Rupert Friend, star of Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, will join Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in Gareth Edwards' new Jurassic film for Universal. Jeffery Wright joins The Last of Us season 2 as Isaac, reprising his role from the video game.

"You know why we, uh why we like to be hugged? The way I see it, it sets a limit on the pain. You know? Puts a perimeter around it." The OA's Chapter 7 episode, "Empire of Light" continues the story all in the present day, as OA receives another terrible dream or possible premonition while dealing with the potential trauma she might've caused to her adoptive parents, Abel and Nancy Johnson, that fateful day she left over 7 years ago. In the mean time, the Crestwood 5 is working on perfecting the movements for interdimensional travel while Steve's horrific actions has finally caught up to him.  Although the entirety of "Empire of Light" stays within the present timeline in which we don't get to see what happens to Homer, Renata, Scott, and Rachel, we get an emotionally resonant episode about dealing with our past traumas and how that festers into our current daily lives. The chemistry between Phyllis Smith's BBA and Patrick Gibson's Steve soars here with such tidy and timely humor albeit in a very serious situation. The conclusion to the episode is incredibly chilling because of how high the emotional stakes are, especially considering that this may be the last time we get to hear The OA tell her story.  "Tonight, I will finish telling my story. Are you ready?"

Are you Green or Orange? We're not quite Red over this listener recommendation (thanks Em!) but both Brenna and Joe find that Bracken's text doesn't fully want to engage with its rebellion or world-building as much as it could (or should?) Instead it's a lot of road trip, with an unconvincing romance and a cliffhanger that suggests we might enjoy the next book in this series more.Alas the film fares worse: despite decent special effects and a more convincing romantic pairing between returning champ Amandla Stenberg and someone named Harris Dickinson (*not a Hemsworth), the film doubles down on the book's least interesting aspects. As it stands, this pairing simply doesn't stand on its own two feet and Stenberg (see previous episodes: Everything, Everything; The Hate U Give, and The Hunger Games) deserves better!Wanna connect with the show? A family building journey may not always be straight forward and easy. And most times those feelings of hope and positivity may fade into confusion and gut-wrenching disappointment. This is what it was like for Claire and Patrick Gibson. As time passed and fertility treatments failed, Claire continued to struggle to find the right answers. However, those answers led to a breath of fresh air, building a family through adoption. In this episode, Claire discusses her debate over fostering or adopting a child, the experience and difference between domestic and international adoption, and what led her and husband to their decision. Gibson symbolizes the power of prayer and urges the American people to recognize their blessings.  “As a singer-songwriter, I've always searched for truth and realism in my work and when I completed this song, I took it into the studio with my producer and that's when it became apparent to me that the subject of this composition was very important, and that I needed to find a way to share the message of the song with the world. The lyrics take you into the lives of the families and how it goes beyond just the human that is serving, but how it affects the entire home life and daily routine,” shares Gibson.  Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

My guest for this month is Patrick Gibson, and he’s joined me to discuss the film he chose for me, the 2009 science fiction drama film Moon. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: This film was co-written and directed by the former Zowie Bowie, Duncan Jones It stars the delightful Sam Rockwell, with voice acting from the also delightful Kevin Spacey We recorded this episode right after the sad passing of Jones' father, David Bowie I watched this film via a Blu-ray that was given to me by former guest of the show Jake Desaulniers The music was composed by Clint Mansell, who has also scored a bunch of Darren Aronofsky films I still maintain that Steve Jobs is the reason my internet was being flaky Daren Arinofsky isn’t Paul Thomas Anderson, thank goodness Mallrats cost $6 millon to make, whereas Clerks cost $27,575. This film cost $5 million There were two slogans for this film, both are very much like what I remembered I haven’t seen Matt Damon in The Martian because I rarely see new films. It cost $108 million to make Here at Cinema Gadfly, we recognize former guest Serenity Caldwell as our official French pronunciation expert It’s way beyond the powers of a one line note to explain set theory. It’s very cool though I wouldn’t watch a television sequel staring Charlie Sheen and Ashton Kutcher. On that point I’m pretty confident This film owns a lot to 2001: A Space Odyssey, in really great ways The Three Laws of Robotics are followed fairly closely in this film Another reminder that Patrick’s wife Maja appeared in two great episodes of this very show I’ll admit that I haven’t actually watched K-PAX. Maybe it’s a great film? Firewatch may not have come out last Tuesday, but it’s a phenomenal game everyone should play Bon Iver’s first album was recorded in singer Justin Vernon’s father’s remote Wisconsin hunting cabin It’s no longer current, but the piece on Apple I mention is still up on Patrick’s awesome site Patrick and Maja are currently traveling around the world, while writing about it. Show notes: My original review of Wild Strawberries This film was the last role by legendary Swedish actor Victor Sjöström, who directed The Phantom Carriage You can’t fly directly from Stockholm to Lund these days, you have to go to Malmö and drive. It takes about two hours total A flight from Stockholm to Sydney, Australia takes almost 24 hours, so a bit longer Ingmar Bergman was having an affair with his leading lady Bibi Andersson during the making of this film Norwegian Black Metal and Swedish Death Metal are two things that I associate with Scandinavia A Mitzvah is a good dead, and a Mensch is someone who does them Virtually every Bergman film was produced by Svensk Filmindustri Akira Kurosawa made loooong films. Seven Samurai is 207 minutes for instance Bergman getting to work with both Gunnar Fischer and Sven Nykvist is almost unfair to other filmmakers The Seventh Seal’s portrayal of death is famously parodied in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey I loved the brilliance of Persona, and highly recommend it to anyone who liked this film Patrick’s wife Maja appeared in two great episodes of this very show If you haven’t checked out Firewatch yet, what are you waiting for? The tone feels similar to this film Patrick works for one of my all time favorite companies, Portland’s Panic, which also employees our last guest Neven Mrgan I highly recommend anyone technical out there to read Patrick’s website, it’s really good stuff Patrick and Maja are currently traveling around the world, while writing about it.
