When Deborah's love of her life walked away from her to be with someone she knew, her world fell apart and everything she felt about herself deep inside proved to be true. She felt broken, invisible, and most of all unlovable? This experience was a recurrent theme for Deborah throughout her life and she realized she was the one common denominator. Through her journey of self-discovery, she realized that she attracted everything and everyone to her simply by the way she felt deep inside about herself. She is now so grateful for those experiences, as they have lead her to a world of more joy, more love, and more abundance than she ever dreamed about. More importantly, she feels bliss that comes from within herself and has such a powerful sense of self that nothing can shake her. It's a quiet confidence and connection to herself and to the divine. Deborah helps women who appear strong and confident on the outside, yet feel invisible or broken somewhere deep inside. They're tired of being on the gerbil wheel of life longing to feel at peace and know there is something more. She helps them establish a strong foundation so that they can begin to use the Universal Laws of Gratitude and Attraction to create the life they dream about as they fall asleep at night. One day, he packed his bags to leave for a job and never returned. But her story of survivorship didn't begin there. Listen as we talk with Debbie about how she survived an emotionally and financially abusive marriage and re-discovered who she was. This special episode is a lesson and dialogue with our inspiring friend, Fadia- a resilient and faithful disciple from the Middle Eastern country of Jordan. Fadia has endured devastating trials, many on account of her faith in Jesus, including the imprisonment of her beloved husband. She shares with us the courage and convictions that have carried her through even the darkest of valleys, and the strength and purpose she finds in God. Episode Notes: Judges 4-5 -God appoints Deborah Deborah responds to God's call and plan- using her gifts, talents, and wisdom. Deborah was committed and obedient to God, even in hard times When we are women that are committed to God's plan, we can find strength we never knew we could possess. We don't like the times when we endure trials- but these are when we grow closer to God and find strength and direction from Him. It takes courage to trust that God is in control. When I am Weak, Then I am Strong2 Corinthians 12:9-10 - "But {The Lord} said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."Are you obedient to God's commandment and voice, even in the hard times? When Deborah achieved victory, she didn't forget the victory belonged to God. She praised and celebrated God after He worked powerfully and gave the vicory. (Judges 5) When WE have victories in our life, we shouldn't give credit to ourselves and "our" strength, we should give Him all the glory! We can celebrate the victories WITH God.He is an Almighty, Holy, and Loving Lord- He has a purpose and a call for YOU. We can be women that are committed to God even in the hardest times. We can be courageous through trusting God and His word, and sharing God's love with others. We can be thankful to God for His work within and through us. Faith is built in the darkest of valleys. No man can fill the role that designed for women. Satan will try to tell us lies- that we are inferior or inadequate. We must denounce his lies as we fill ourselves with God's truth. Respond to God's call Be committed in any circumstance or situation. Be courageous by trusting God to work- He will never forsake you. Let's pray for our sisters in the Middle East! The last time Mama Medicine (AKA Deborah Hanekamp) joined the show, I had a serious out-of-body experience. It was madness. This mama has some serious power. (If you want an idea of what I’m talking about, you can use code LUKE20 for $20 off a medicine reading any time in 2020 at www.mamamedicine.com/medicinereadings.) So, of course, I had to bring Deborah back on, although we’re talking about a very different subject — ritual baths. I’m not exactly playing pickup football at the park every weekend, but I like to think of myself as a pretty masculine dude. I definitely never thought of myself as the kind of person who would sink into a bath adorned with flower petals. But after reading Deborah’s new book — "Ritual Baths: Be Your Own Healer" — I really started to look at my bathtub with a new perspective. I always thought of showers and baths as more of a utilitarian thing: I get clean and kickstart my nervous system with a quick cold shower. I was so focused on staying clean and stacking biohacks that I never really stopped to consider the spiritual benefits of a well-planned bath. Honestly, I never would have guessed there was so much I didn’t know about baths! But now that I know, I’m excited to add another easy #spirithack for inner peace and spiritual wellness to my repertoire. 10:25 — Why write a book on Ritual Baths? Baths are a really comprehensive way to be your own healer The feeling of cleansing you get after a bath goes deeper than just your physical body How approaching it with intention turns your bath into a ritual Why Deborah started recommending baths after medicine readings 15 years ago The historical relevance of ritual baths Why I love natural water and when I almost created a water-focused brand Giving yourself a womb-like experience submerged in the water 22:35 — What it looks like when you start a bath with an intention The “I Am Nature” bath What a medicine reading is like (use code LUKE20 for $20 off a medicine reading at www.mamamedicine.com/medicinereadings) Becoming your own healer 30:25 — How a healer is different from a guru or savior The issue of disempowerment, especially in spiritual communities When Deborah gave her power away and what she learned from that experience Creating Mama Medicine as something empowering “We all have access to the divine because we all have love.” Spiritual work is more often ordinary than extraordinary Why Deborah doesn’t consider remote medicine readings to be any different from in-person ones The space-time illusion 44:00 — The role plant medicines have played in Deborah’s journey and how they just might save humanity from destruction Deborah is still integrating what she learned after years with Mother Ayahuasca Why Deborah now doesn’t take any conscious-altering substances How all of the water on the planet is connected to 57:05 — The ultimate guide to water filters Most municipal water is extremely toxic! If you’re a discerning health enthusiast like myself, you’ve probably sat and scratched your head at the health food store trying to figure out which CBD product you should buy. They all make big claims, they all say they’re the best, but what actually works? Well, I just found a brand that I’m super stoked about, and I want to share it with you: ONDA offers a patented and truly full-spectrum line of products that aren’t dependent on the use of alcohol, CO2, or other solvents for extraction – and this is important because when you’re getting the medicine out of the plant, you don’t want to add poisons to it! You can try it for yourself and get 15% off using code LUKE15 at ondawellness.com. AND… BIOPTIMIZERS. Starting in the 80’s, supplement companies began pushing massive protein consumption. We all believed that “more protein = more muscle growth.” But I’m here to tell you that IT’S A BIG FAT LIE. It doesn’t matter if you’re consuming 30 or 300 grams of protein — if you don’t have a sufficient supply of enzymes to digest protein, your muscles will be starving for those vital building blocks. That’s why it’s crucial you take a high-quality enzyme. The one I trust (and use myself) is called MassZymes by BiOptimizers, a full-spectrum enzyme formula with more protease than any other commercially available. Plus, it contains all the other key enzymes you need for optimal digestion. And you can try it today, risk-free. Their 365 day FULL money back guarantee is the gold standard in the industry. Original Broadcast: July 2009 Monthly Theme: The Judges of Israel Sisera, however, fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there were friendly relations between Jabin king of Hazor and the clan of Heber the Kenite. (Judges 4:17) Sisera Sisera was the commander-in-chief of Jabin's forces. When Deborah and Barak pressed the battle, he fled in fear. He found a tent among his allies that he could hide in. While he hid, the woman who offered her tent to him killed him in his sleep. The death of a coward. Amazing how both armies in the battle were commanded by cowards. Are you a coward? Do the problems in life intimidate you to the point that you run to any and every possible hiding place? Why is it? People turn to alcohol and drugs so they can escape into an altered version of reality. Others seek the hedonistic rush of promiscuous sexual activity. Why do you run? What's so great about the problems in your life that you have to run and hide? Why not go to the one place where you can find true help--your heavenly Father? Are your sins so great that you're unworthy of His attention? Do you see Him as a vindictive Judge instead of a compassionate Father? We pray in the Lord's Prayer, "forgive us our trespasses" and "deliver us from evil." Do we truly believe that God will grant these petitions that we ask on our knees? Certainly He will. He promises to hear us whenever we call upon Him in the name of His Son. The next time the troubles and problems of this world chase after you run to your heavenly Father. He will take care of you. Amen.
Some people just add spark to life. My friend Deborah Coty is one fireball of energy. Her best-selling Too Blessed to Be Stressed series encapsulates a bit of her spirit, and this interview will give you a glimpse into her amazing dream tending heart. A few minutes with this woman will refresh and revive you. Deborah dreamed as a child of writing a book. She was what she calls a “rabid reader” devouring every story she could get her hands on. Christy by Catherine Marshall particularly inspired and captured Deborah’s attention. She read that one book about twelve times in six months. It changed her way of viewing herself. It changed her way of viewing God. It changed her way of viewing life. And she felt a spark of hope that she too, might some day help other people through writing books, the way that single story had helped her. For the next thirty-six years, her writing consisted of preparing medical charts and penning an annual family Christmas newsletter. But at forty-five years old, just as her youngest child was getting ready to fly the coop, leaving Deb’s nest empty, she felt as if she was missing something. There was something she was supposed to be doing. She just couldn’t figure it out. But one day, as she was sitting in a dentist’s office, praying, she heard a still, small voice in her spirit speak two simple words. “It’s time.” She says in that moment, she knew exactly what she was supposed to do. She remembered that dream from so long ago . . . of writing. She took some crash courses on writing, and first concentrated on magazine articles. From there, she began to explore the possibility of writing books. Today, Deb’s Too Blessed to Be Stressed series has sold just under a million copies. She says she’s the poster child for the truth that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. And if you follow me at all, you know that makes her a woman after my own heart. Often, we feel as if our dream has been buried, but in reality, it’s been planted. There are things going on beneath the surface. There’s watering, the soil has be tilled, and we even require fertilizer. The patience part is what can get to us. We want what we want and we want it now. But when we begin to realize that God is the one who planted our dreams in our hearts, and according to the Bible, He is willing to do exceedingly, abundantly more than we can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), our dreams can burst out of the darkness. When Deborah’s Too Blessed to Be Stressed books first released, they didn’t sell that well. But suddenly, the sleeper awoke. Deborah can’t explain exactly how it happened, but I think her consistent faith had much to do with it. Filling Needs: Are the expectations you’re setting for yourself reasonable? Are you over-complicating what God wants to do in your life? Have you asked Him what He wants to unearth in you? Are you allowing fears that you’re too poor, too young, too old, too stressed, or too anything to hold you back from pursuing your dreams? Work with what you have and realize that life is equipping you in preparation for your future dreams. This episode’s Dream Tending Tips: Start where you are. Look around you. What’s going on? What experiences have you had? Who are the people who’ve influenced you? This is the fodder to help you tend your dreams. Do something silly, unusual, or unrelated to your dreams to unleash your inner creativity. Consider what you’ve learned, what are the habits or disciplines that can help you tend your dreams? Be willing to learn and relearn, to practice and re-practice, so your skills are sharply honed. Listen to people’s complaints, but from a different perspective. What are you hearing that might be part of a greater plan for your life? Are you being called to do something based on patterns of complaint? Don’t discount what God wants to do with what you plant. Ask Him to show you what to seed. Don’t give up on your dreams too soon—don’t let them die—don’t kill them too early. Sometimes, it may appear as if our dreams are buried, but if we keep working the soil, watering, and fertilizing, then suddenly, new growth can burst from the ground. Hi Friend! Episode 45 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast features poet, spoken word artist and actor and past winner of the prestigious Jingle Feldman Artist Award, Deborah J. Hunter. I’m your SallyPAL podcast host, Sally Adams. I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Send an email anytime to Sally@sallypal.com. Thanks to everyone who joined me at New York’s Town Stages for my live feed Wednesday, August 8. My daughter, writer Emile Adams, joined me as well as several fellows from the Sokoloff Arts Fellowship program at Town Stages in New York City. Nimrod, Curbside Review, This Land, and Another Sun in the UK have all published Deborah Hunter’s essays and poems. Deborah has made a lasting impact on her community in Tulsa, Oklahoma through her work as a certified behavioral health case manager and as an artist. Her impact is felt throughout the state. This year Deborah was honored with a Woman of the Year Pinnacle Award for women creating real, sustainable change in Oklahoma. Over the summer Deborah worked with playwright Tara Brooke Watkins developing ideas through something called 'story circles'. Using the Mary E. Jones Parrish collection of photographs, Tara created a new work about the 1921 Greenwood Massacre in the Tulsa Greenwood District. Tara asked my guest, Deborah Hunter, to build a poem around the phrase “Dig It” or “So You Wanna Dig?” for the piece. Two poems by Deborah Hunter appear in the work, Tulsa ’21: Black Wall Street. Deborah also worked this summer with Portico Dance Theatre on their SummerStage production simply titled, Wo. Her poetry is very much in demand these days. As a performing poet, she brings her formidable energy to the stage creating stories and characters of substance. Deborah Hunter's life is filled with stories of struggle. Her grandmother was a survivor of the massacre on Greenwood. And her adult daughter is mentally ill. When Deborah’s daughter was diagnosed with schizophrenia, Deborah began a long journey relating to people with mental health diagnoses. She’s a mental health advocate, a voice for women of color, a caseworker with a deep understanding of homelessness, and a soulful storyteller. During the interview, Deb and I cover a lot of ground in our shared hometown including OneOk Ball Park, Guthrie Green, the Mental Health Association of Oklahoma, NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness), and the Greenwood Cultural Center. We talked about Pablo Neruda, Henry Louis Gates, Hannibal Johnson, David Blakely and his play about the Osage Murders called Four Ways to Die. Blakely based his play on David Grann’s book about the Murders, Killers of the Flower Moon. I also mentioned a book about race relations I read as a teacher at Holland Hall Preparatory School, titled Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? by Beverly Daniel Tatum. I can recommend both books enthusiastically. There is so much depth to Deborah’s way of looking at the world. She is strong and kind, formidable and nuanced, deep and funny. I know you’ll enjoy hearing Deborah’s point of view as both an activist and an artist. Be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George. Concise Advice from the Interview: 5 bits of advice from Poet-Activist, Deborah J. A cause of death is called into question during the embalming process. When Deborah discovers that one man’s demise is clearly different from the coroner’s conclusion, she must decide how to proceed with the formal investigation. The true cause of death brings her to an interesting crossroads.
Pianist and composer Deborah Offenhauser began taking piano lessons when she was five years old, though she had been playing for some time before then—begging her brothers to teach her everything they knew. After a visiting piano teacher mistook her piano playing for her older brother’s, she was promptly signed up for lessons and a lifelong love of music was born. She studied piano formally until she was fourteen, memorizing classical pieces for festivals and contests, and learning theory, scales, and chord progressions along the way. Her father ensured that she wouldn’t be too immersed in classicism, and she credits him for her exposure to more contemporary musical numbers . When Deborah’s piano teacher relocated, her formal lessons ended but her love for music continued unabated. While her older brothers had long left their childhood piano lessons in the past, she not only continued playing piano, but the classical organ, mandolin, 5-string banjo, guitar, and violin as well. She worked as an accompanist throughout high school and college, and after making connections with college faculty, she was asked to lecture at the University of Michigan. Her career as a music teacher had just begun. Deborah continued to play music during her teaching years, opening for bands from The Moody Blues to The Chordettes, playing at resorts, hotels, and casinos, and recording albums of original piano tunes blended with covers of favorite songs. With patience and perseverance, she was delighted when her efforts led to “Desperate Housewives”, “The Big Bang Theory”, and “Madam Secretary”—all hit television shows—using her songs in their programming. She also became a pianist for a number of touring Broadway shows and has seen her music distributed nationally via Barnes & Noble, and Borders Books & Music book stores. Her new CD Soundscapes is outstanding
