By Doug Green “We help keep the bad guys out all day, every day, 24/7.” In this Technology Reseller News podcast recorded at MSP Summit, Josh Bergen of CallTek is joined by Jason S., “The Beekeeper,” for a lighthearted conversation about a serious subject: helping MSPs protect customers, support users and keep critical systems running. CallTek provides white-label IT support for MSPs, with teams in Kenya and the Philippines supporting customers in the U.S. The company offers Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support, along with NOC and SOC capabilities. The “Beekeeper” theme is a tongue-in-cheek reference to dealing with cyber criminals when everything else fails. The real work, Bergen says, is about making sure things never reach that point. CallTek works behind the scenes for MSPs, using many of the cybersecurity, endpoint and monitoring tools already familiar to the channel. That can include EDR, SIEM, antivirus, web filtering and other technologies selected by the MSP. “We don't resell the software,” Bergen says. “We help operate and support it.” That model allows MSPs to expand their technical capabilities without having to build every layer of support internally. CallTek says it currently works with roughly 100 MSP customers in the U.S. and has a significant presence in hospitality, including support for hotel Wi-Fi environments. The company also works in verticals including nursing homes, multifamily housing, senior living and healthcare. Those environments raise the stakes considerably. Keeping a hotel network running is important, but in healthcare and senior living, Bergen notes that technology can also connect to systems supporting patient monitoring and other critical functions. For MSPs, the value proposition is straightforward: add operational depth, extend support coverage and strengthen security without losing the customer-facing relationship. And if all else fails? Artificial intelligence is rapidly finding its way into everyday tools—but where does it fit in the bee yard? Beekeeping challenges rarely stop at national borders. The UK Health Security Agency is investigating the outbreak of salmonella that's led to confirmed cases in more than 200 people, and the death of one person. Initial findings suggest it could be linked to imported eggs. Salmonella is extremely rare in UK produced eggs - all laying hens have to be vaccinated against it, and there's a ‘passport' system ensuring that all hens, eggs and feed are fully traceable. Although the vast majority of eggs we buy to cook with at home are British, eggs and egg products used in restaurants and other food services can often be imported to reduce costs. Not all of the countries they come from enforce the same production standards as the UK, The British Egg Industry Council says there needs to be a stricter testing regime for imported eggs. We eat around 40 million eggs a day in the UK, and import five million of those. We speak to an expert about how you begin to track down where a salmonella outbreak might have come from.Beekeepers are warning that the lack of rain this summer could have long term consequences for their bees, which are vital pollinators for many crops. Do you listen to your bees? Beekeepers rely heavily on sight when inspecting a colony, along with touch and even smell. But in this installment of Bee Science with Dr. Dewey Caron, Dewey asks us to consider another source of information—the remarkable world of sound and vibration produced by honey bees. Honey bees live in an acoustic world that extends well beyond the familiar buzz we hear around a colony. Dewey explores how bees produce sound through their flight muscles and how they perceive airborne vibrations through their antennae and substrate-borne vibrations through their legs. He also explains why a queenless colony can sound noticeably different from a queenright colony and how experienced beekeepers can sometimes recognize changes within a colony simply by listening. Dewey then returns to the waggle dance, exploring research showing that sound and vibration are important components of honey bee communication. Recruits aren't simply following a dancer—they are receiving vibroacoustic information that helps communicate the distance to a food source. The science gets even more fascinating as Dewey examines stop signals, predator warnings, learning among young dancers, and acoustic communication in other honey bee species. Finally, Dewey traces the history of using colony sounds to understand bee behavior, from Eddie Woods' pioneering Apidictor in the 1950s to today's digital sensors, sophisticated microphones, and machine-learning systems designed to interpret what's happening inside a colony without unnecessarily opening the hive.
