CCP125: On the New Hunger for Cultural Christianity

Church & Culture Podcast

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss both the startling rise of cultural Christianity in the West, as well as the incurably churchy desires of our souls. While there is an upward trend in America for people to identify themselves as religiously unaffiliated, they don't actually seem to want to disaffiliate themselves from all things related to religion. In fact, there are many traditions and symbols associated with Christianity that they seem to long for. So what causes this spiritual hunger? Episode Links Dr. White recently blogged about this topic, which is part of what prompted today's conversation. We'd suggest reading “The Rise of Cultural Christianity” and “Surprising Mourners for the Decline of Christianity.” There was also an article written by Madeleine Davies for The New Statesman titled “The rise of cultural Christianity,” which you can find HERE. Dr. White also mentioned the surprising commentary made recently by famed atheist Richard Dawkins stating that he would consider himself to be a cultural Christian. You can watch the LBC video post of Richard Dawkins on X HERE, as well as read the article written by Walter Sánchez Silva titled “Famous Atheist Richard Dawkins Says He Considers Himself a ‘Cultural Christian'.” There was another article Dr. White referenced written by Derek Thompson - who considers himself to be an agnostic - in The Atlantic. You can read “The True Cost of the Churchgoing Bust” HERE. There were a few books that Dr. White noted related to today's conversation: The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order by Sam Huntington, Mr. Jones, Meet the Master: Sermons and Prayers of Peter Marshall by Catherine Marshall and How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill. There are a couple past podcasts that you may be interested in checking out related to today's conversation. One is CCP106: On Atheists and Agnostics and the other is CCP9: On Unchurched Christians. The first explores the rise in Americans saying “no” to organized religion and the second focuses on this desire that so many have to find church-like experiences in other settings. There is also an article written by Marc Ramirez in USA Today titled “As Millions Leave Organized Religion, Spiritual and Secular Communities Offer Refuge.” You can read that article HERE. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday.

Talking with Ann Gabhart is always a pleasure, but this time we got to chat about a book that I feel like is going to be my favorite of all the books she's ever written--and definitely a favorite of 2024. Listen in to see why I'm so excited about The Song of Sourwood Mountain. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you.   With a story reminiscent of Catherine Marshall's beloved Christy, The Song of Sourwood Mountain touches at the heart of what historical romance readers love best--history, local culture, faith, and an epi romance.  Well, when I started reading, I knew this book had all that and more. I mean, it kicks off with a proposal from a man our heroine hasn't seen in years and didn't know well then.  If you love a good marriage of convenience story, I'm sure you'll love The Song of Sourwood Mountain.   Get the book from bakerbookhouse.com for 30% off with free shipping! The Song of Sourwood Mountain by Ann H. Gabhart   While the century began with such promise, it is 1910 when Mira Dean's hopes of being a wife and mother are dashed to pieces. Her fiancé dead from tuberculosis, Mira resigns herself to being a spinster schoolteacher--until Gordon Covington shows up. No longer the boy she knew from school, Gordon is now a preacher who is full of surprises. First, he asks Mira to come to Sourwood in eastern Kentucky to teach at his mission school. Second, he asks her to marry him. Just like that. And all at once the doors that had seemed firmly shut begin to open, just a crack. With much trepidation, Mira steps out in faith into a life she never imagined, in a place filled with its own special challenges, to serve a people who will end up becoming the family she always dreamed of. From the pen of bestselling author Ann H. Gabhart comes a heartwarming story of the unexpected blessings that can come when we dare to follow the Lord's leading. Have you been thinking of (or dreaming about) taking an Antarctic cruise? Cruising is huge and estimates have the cruise industry growing by another 9% in 2024. For some regular cruisers, particularly those with large disposable incomes, the great white continent, represents just another an as-yet unexplored cruise destination to conquer.  For others, Antarctica is a long-cherished dream. But what's it really like? What can you expect on a cruise to Antarctica? Natascha Mirosch puts that question to travel journalist Catherine Marshall, who has been to Antarctica not once, but twice. They discuss the dreaded Drake Crossing, life on board an expedition ship, Antarctica's wildlife and shore excursions. Catherine tells us about the fascinating post office at the end of the world, and the British post mistresses who come to this remote spot to man it as well as the time she had a polar swim. They also talk about the environmental impacts and whether a visit can have a positive impact. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to cruise to Antarctica, have a listen.

Christy by Catherine Marshall is a historical fiction book that follows the fictional character of Christy who decides to serve as a teacher in the Appalachian Mountains. It was based partially on reality and the experiences of Catherine Marshall's mother. She goes thinking she has so much to give and ends up finding there is so much more for her to learn.   “I love how she goes in with the intent of, ‘I'm going to help these people,' and ultimately, it's them helping her.” - Dana Robb   “It's one of the reasons I love this book because it's a really good look, and a really honest look at what richness and abundance people have within themselves and within their communities that people from the outside maybe don't recognize because it doesn't look like the richness and abundance that they have in their lives, and so because it's different and it's dissimilar, they assume that somehow these people are lacking, and that's not always the case, and it's not always true.” - Shelli Spotts   “Our journey is not always going to look like everyone else's.” - Shelli Spotts   “I love that it kind of tells you a little bit of the kind of feelings you might have with that internal compass, and that once she decides to go with it, she never wavers in that decision.” - Monica Anderson   “I really see this book as a journey that she goes on to connect with her inner compass, to connect with God.” - Dana Robb   “We have to allow love to guide our reactions to people, and then we don't see them as problems, and we don't see them as projects, and we don't see them as obstacles to be overcome, but we see them as they are: human!” - Shelli Spotts   “I love thinking about the multiplying power of love.” - Dana Robb   “And that's going to happen when you're inviting God into your life more, you're listening to your inner compass more, your love is growing, when you've got Him on your side, that power is immense.” - Monica Anderson   “I just love this idea that something very simple can make a huge difference.” - Shelli Spotts   “Frequently, what a community needs is not someone coming in from without to change them, but help to change themselves.” - Shelli Spotts   “This assumption that you're the one that has something to teach and that you don't have anything to learn, I think devalues great stores of wisdom and knowledge that other people have. We do have to go into situations where we're open to reciprocation, and we're open to learning just as much as we're hoping to teach others.” - Shelli Spotts   “Every interaction we have can be a type of ministry, and especially this theme of love. We can minister with love, we can minister love.” - Shelli Spotts   “By the end of the book, it just changed me. I felt like I walked there … seeing those delightful moments … I couldn't help but be affected by it.” - Monica Anderson   “I realized, by reading this book, that my imperfect effort is enough. What I have to offer, it's going to be enough, and that it's better to fumble on my way through, then to not offer anything at all.” - Dana Robb   Christy by Catherine Marshall   Multipliers by Liz Wiseman   Monica Anderson married her high school sweetheart. They have 3 children together, girl, boy, girl. She loves to spend time with her family and friends. She also loves working with animals, especially dogs and cats. She is continuing her education to gain more wisdom and knowledge so she can share that with others through teaching, mentoring, or discussions. This last passion is actually a new found love when she decided to invest in herself and took a Mission Driven Mom class. Monica is naturally happy, positive, courteous, and helpful. That being said, she also suffered greatly from victim mentality. She learned about many great tools to help her to be a better person for herself and those around her. Ironically enough one of the books required for the course was Christy. She fell in love with this book!   Whenever Dana Robb is presented with the opportunity for adventure, she is all in. Currently, this includes riding the local mountain biking trails with her husband, canyoneering, and climbing the hills of southern Utah. She loves to learn and explore with her six kids. She is drawn to the opportunities being involved with Big Ocean Women provides. Dana loves connecting to a global sisterhood where women's issues are being addressed through reframing and an abundance mindset. Shelli Spotts is an advocacy writer and creative writing teacher. She loves to spend time with her husband (usually in the garden) and their four almost adult children. She also loves to sew, to read, to write, and to drag her family outside to look at the sky. Shelli is passionate about poetry, Broadway show tunes, and telling stories—of ourselves, our families, and our communities.

There are many, many ways to see Japan, but I think I've just experienced my favourite: on foot. In late September/early October 2023, I undertook a six-day trip with Walk Japan, on the Self-Guided Basho Wayfarer walk around Sendai. And it was brilliant! In this episode, I give an overview of the content and logistics of this trip, which essentially includes hiking various segments of the route that haiku poet Matsuo Basho took in the 1700s, as he describes in his book "Narrow Road to the Deep North". It had all the elements of a trip that I need to really love it: incredible scenery, interesting sightseeing spots, truly delicious food, some great interactions with locals, and all with one of my best friends.

The Cape to Cape Track has loomed iconically in my mind for many years, although its location down in the south-west corner of Western Australia means many of you won't have heard of it. Running from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin - and more traditionally, from the lighthouses at each end which I've visited as tourist attractions many times throughout my life - this 124km walk passes along beaches and cliffs, through forest and up and down dunes, all the time with the ocean either boldly visible or at least close enough that you can hear the waves. In short, it is amazing, and what's even better, my friend Catherine and I have just come back from hiking it. This episode includes a chat between Catherine and I after we returned from our week-long hike. We'd had grand plans of recording small snippets each night but soon realised that hiking over 20km per day took all our energy and brain space, but I think this more reflective chat after the event will give you a really good idea of what this experience meant to us. Enjoy! The disclosure bit: we self-funded this trip - our opinions (as always) are 100% our own!

Señor Jesús, no entiendo tus tiempos.

Welcome to Day 1894 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Be Filled With Joy – Daily Wisdom Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1894 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote and some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. So we are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16)  How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver!    If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Catherine Marshall, and it is: According to Jesus, it is God's will that His children be filled with the joy of life. Be Filled With Joy Every Christ-follower should be filled with joy to overflowing. Of course, that doesn't mean that life will be easy all the time or that we won't have problems or discouragements. But, it means that regardless of the pains of life, we know who holds our past, present, and future and that we are secure in Jesus Christ. Once we understand that our overriding purpose in life is to use our God-given talents and abilities to build God's kingdom here on earth, our priorities and focus on life will serve that purpose. All too often, our sense of significance, purpose, and security is tied to what we do for a living or our family and friends. While we should do our very best in whatever we do for a living and foster strong relationships with family and friends, the only lasting value is what we do in life that will impact others for eternity. Our occupation and calling are to build God's kingdom. Our job, family, and friends are how we fulfill that occupation. If we have our priorities in life correct, we can be filled with joy every day, regardless of the challenges and obstacles. The key is obedience to the calling of God through Christ Jesus. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A9-17&version=NLT (John 15:9-17) “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father's commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn't confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn't choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command: Love each other. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1893 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com. Holy Spirit. When you hear that name, you could have a number of different reactions based on your personal experience. Some of you are going to feel weirded out. Some of you are going to feel a little distant from Him. Some of you are going to be very excited to learn more about this mysterious Person of the Trinity, an essential part of Christian doctrine. Listen to the episode if you find yourself in any of these categories, and I have a strong feeling you will walk away feeling very encouraged at the end of this conversation. Jeannie answers.... How do we begin to shift from the Holy Spirit being more of an accessory in our faith to ESSENTIAL? How do we know that we are being prompted by the Holy Spirit and not ourselves?  How is relying on Him to change us better than "self-help"? Jeannie Cunnion is an author who is well known for writing stories that make much of the wild love of Jesus because of how her life has been rescued by it. She is also a beloved Bible teacher and sought-after speaker who has been featured on outlets such as the TODAY show, Fox News, The 700 Club, and Focus on the Family. Jeannie, who holds a master's degree in social work, worked as a counselor and trainer in the adoption field before writing. She is a wife to Mike and a mama to five boys she is crazy about. The ultimate long trip is not a trip at all: migrating to another country has much in common with long-term travel, but then, you never go home. Episode 254 is about migrating to Australia in particular - it interests me greatly to hear more about how and why people have moved to my home country, and what they like or dislike about it. First up, I chat with Catherine Marshall, who migrated from South Africa almost two decades ago. As she mentions, we have a significant number of South African migrants here in my hometown of Perth, so it's especially intriguing to hear more about her experiences. I then speak with Anuj, a migrant from India who now lives in Melbourne, after initially coming to Australia to complete postgraduate study. Fifteen years on, he seems very happy here! Finally, I talk to Lucky Legong, another immigrant from South Africa who arrived in Australia more recently after being offered a job at Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island. From never having considered Australia as a destination, to migrating here and working for more than four years now in the tourism industry, Lucky has enjoyed her experience of moving to Australia - and that makes me glad! I'm usually talking about elephants in the sense of seeing them on safari, or of how we should ethically visit elephants in appropriate sanctuaries, and how we absolutely shouldn't ride them. But this episode is  about what happens when travellers and elephants collide - quite literally! It's three years since I did the first Behind the Scenes episode and so much has changed. This time round, travel writer Catherine Marshall interviews me with discussions about the ideas I have for podcast topics, what makes a good interviewee, any disasters I've had and an overview of the technical aspects of how The Thoughtful Travel Podcast comes together. The world is experiencing a pandemic from COVID-19. So research is looking at every which way various physiologic states might be protective or increase vulnerability. Across the world males seem more susceptible, compared to women (especially premenopausal women) to getting COVID. Once they get it, they are more susceptible to severe outcomes as well as fatalities, once again compared to younger women. It has been suggested that estrogen may be protective against COVID-19 in females and/or that androgens (like testosterone) worsen COVID-19 in men. As of this date, there are three studies being done giving males and menopausal females "estrogen" and/or "progesterone" replacement as it "may" be protective against COVID-19. In This Show You will Hear About Estrogen Is estrogen protective against COVID? Estrogen signals are critical in both innate and adaptive immune responses as well as in tissue repairing processes during respiratory virus infection. Estrogens can regulate the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a key component for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) cell entry. So estrogen may play a role as a protective COVID “gate-keeper”. The paper that discusses this is: Estrogen regulates the expression of SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE2 in differentiated airway epithelial cells. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol. 2020;318(6):L1280-L1281. doi:10.1152/ajplung.00153.2020 In animal experiments, estrogen treatment silences the inflammatory reactions and decreases virus titers leading to improved survival rate. One article even said stated in it abstract, “Premarin (commercial patented estrogen from horse’s urine) is capable of stopping the COVID-19 pandemic.” (Prevention and therapy of COVID-19 via exogenous estrogen treatment for both male and female patients. J Pharm Pharm Sci. 2020;23(1):75-85. doi:10.18433/jpps31069) Estrogen (and progesterone) may be helpful as "anti-COVID-19 agents" for people with a high risk of cell stress like the elderly, cancer patients, and front-line medical staff. Doctors at the Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University in New York are conducting a randomized trial to determine if the use of a “transdermal estrogen patch” for 7 days in patients with COVID-19 might reduce the need for intubation in men and older women infected with COVID-19. What About Progesterone? Many of the sickest patients with COVID-19 have high levels of immune system proteins called cytokines in their blood. “Cytokine storm” is an overactive immune response to a viral infection and is one of the most devastating complications of COVID-19 infections. Cytokine storms are known to happen in autoimmune diseases. One study of patients who died of H1N1 influenza, for example, found that 81% had features of a cytokine storm. Researchers have looked at the anti-inflammatory properties of progesterone. Pregnant women, who usually have high levels of progesterone, tend to have milder courses of COVID-19. A new study will assess the use of a short course of progesterone therapy in hospitalized men diagnosed with the novel coronavirus. What About Androgens? In January, one of the first publications on those sickened by the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China, reported that three out of every four hospitalized patients were male. But many men in China smoke while women don’t, so it wasn’t completely known if androgens (male hormones) were the issue, or smoking. But data from around the world have since confirmed that men face a greater risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 than women. Androgens—male hormones such as testosterone—appear to boost the virus’ ability to get inside cells. Preliminary observations from Spain suggest that a disproportionate number of men with male pattern baldness—which is linked to a powerful androgen—end up in hospitals with COVID-19. Epidemiological data from around the world have confirmed the early reports of male vulnerability. In Lombardy in Italy, for example, men comprised 82% of 1591 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) from 20 February to 18 March, according to a JAMA paper. And male mortality exceeded that of women in every adult age group in another JAMA study of 5700 New York City patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Several studies link baldness to higher risk of COVID and more severe cases. Baldness is associated with higher levels of the most aggressive metabolites of testosterone (DHT). Two small studies have reported that men with male pattern baldness are overrepresented among hospitalized COVID-19 patients.   A paper by Markus Hoffmann of the Leibniz Institute for Primate Research and colleagues in CELL, sent a lightning bolt through scientific community. This work showed Covid can gain entry into the body more easily by the action of an enzyme called TMPRSS2, a membrane-bound enzyme. The enzyme cleaves the “spike” protein on the coronavirus’ surface, allowing the virus to fuse with the host cell’s membrane and get inside the cell. Male hormones turn this enzyme on. In the prostate, TMPRSS2 is produced when male hormones bind to the androgen receptor. Researchers haven’t established if androgens control TMPRSS2 in the lungs as they have in the prostate. But Andrea Alimonti, head of molecular oncology at Università della Svizzera italiana, looked at data on more than 42,000 men with prostate cancer in Italy. He and colleagues found that patients on androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT)—drugs that slash levels of testosterone—were only one-quarter as likely to contract COVID-19 as men with prostate cancer not on ADT. Men on ADT were also less likely to be hospitalized and to die. In one Italian study, men with prostate cancer who received drugs that suppress androgens were much less likely to be infected with COVID. Prostate cancer researcher Catherine Marshall of Johns Hopkins University is preparing a trial of bicalutamide, an older, inexpensive androgen receptor blocker, in 20 patients hospitalized within 3 days after they tested positive for COVID-19. Women are being included in the trial, she adds, because they have androgens, too, although at lower levels than men. What You will Learn Overall Estrogens help heal acute lung injury. Progesterone tamps down inflammatory cytokines. Androgens might help the virus’s spike protein take grip inside the body. But does this mean high androgens compared to healthy normal levels? We don’t know yet. Drugs ( finasteride and dutasteride) that block the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the most powerful form of testosterone, seem to reduce ACE2 levels in healthy human lung alveolar cells. Androgen sensitivity would explain severe cases in female patients who present with metabolic syndrome or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or who are using birth control methods that include the use of hormones that bind to an androgen receptor (such as levonorgestrel and norethisterone). There is a lot we don’t know, but in this show you will hear the latest about the link between hormones and COVID!

January 2020 was a horrible time for Australia - 186,000 square kilometres of Australia burnt in bushfires (that's an area half the size of Germany); 34 people lost their lives and they estimate up to a billion animals perished. Yep - it was awful, and the aftermath has been awful for the tourism industry too, because many people had to cancel trips during our peak travel season. So, what to do? I'll put on an episode later in the year about the specific parts of Australia you can travel to in order to help out with bushfire recovery but for now, I've interviewed two Australian women who have told me all about the efforts to restore tourism so far, and talked about the far-reaching effects - and possibly some benefits - arising out of the post-bushfire chaos. Processing grief and handling loss - part three When someone or something deeply precious is wrested from us, it leaves a deep wound. The very word ‘bereaved’ derives from the Dutch berauben - to rob or to plunder. We urgently need to let Christ’s love fill the hole. If we turn inwards in the wrong way, the ensuing isolation leads to a hardening of the heart which effectively hinders the re-energising vitality of God. We need to allow ourselves appropriate time and space in which to grieve. In her excellent book ‘To live again’ (a book that is well worth tracking down) Catherine Marshall records how, when she lost her famous preacher husband, she made the conscious decision – much against her natural temperament – to allow other people to come close and walk the journey with her. Where love is, God is. Nothing means more to those who are grieving, and the presence of prayers and presence of loved ones to love us back to strength. This brief extract is accompanied by a particularly moving piece of music written by a local composer and violinist, Michael Burnham.

12 Characteristics of True Principles, Part 1

We live in a world of relativism--my truth and your truth, rather than THE truth. Yet, as mission driven moms, we are striving to build principle-centered hearts and homes. This is no easy task, especially when we've been given almost no clear instruction or direction in the skills of discovering and applying true principles in our lives.  Among other tools we offer at The Mission Driven Mom is this invaluable one--The 12 Characteristics of True Principles! Armed with this simple list of attributes, we can now see principles more clearly. In this podcast you'll be introduced to the first 12 characteristics, with the last 6 coming next week! Listen to stories, quotes and explanations of each in order to better understand the nature of true principles.  Listener's Guide: Use the time stamps below to skip to any part of the podcast.  4:11  How the 12 Characteristics came about 5:55  1- Foundational idea 8:55  2- True for all people, all the time 13:30  3- Increase freedom 17:47  4- Expand the mind 21:32  5- Enlighten the heart   25:05  6- Enlarge the soul Quotes from this episode: "But things have been so admirably arranged by the divine Inventor fo the social order that in this, as in everything, political economy and morality, far from clashing, are in harmony, so that the wisdom of Ariste [the brother who saves] is not only more worthy, but even more profitable, than the follow of Mondor [the brother who spends]." ~Frederic Bastiat "It is not without actual physical pain that I see such contradictions appear between the great laws of Nature. If mankind were reduced to choosing between the two sides, one of which hurts its interests and the other its conscience, we should have to despair for its future. Happily this is not so. To see Ariste regain his economic as well as his moral superiority, we need only understand this consoling axiom, which is not the less true for having a paradoxical appearance: To save is to spend." ~Frederic Bastiat "They were standing a little straighter, and working a little more smartly. It did things to a man, Nat thought, to find out he had a brain." ~Jean Lee Latham "It was not that my hygiene lessons had yet made that much difference, nor that I had grown accustomed to the smells because in other situations my crazy nose bothered me as much as always. It was rather that as I came to know the children and to think of them as persons rather that names in my grade book, I forgot my reactions and began to love them. I suppose the principle was that the higher affection will always expel the lower whenever we give the higher affection sway. For me, it was letting love for the mountain children come in the front door while my preoccupation with bad smells crept out the rathole." ~Catherine Marshall "The nervous agitation of Alexey Alexandrovitch kept increasing, and had by now reached such a point that he ceased to struggle with it. He suddenly felt that what he had regarded as nervous agitation was on the contrary a blissful spiritual condition that gave him all at once a new happiness he had never known. He did not think that the Christian law that he had been all his life trying to follow, enjoined on him to forgive and love his enemies; but a glad feeling of love and forgiveness for his enemies filled his heart." ~Leo Tolstoy "'But I saw her and forgave her. And the happiness of forgiveness has revealed to me my duty. I forgive completely. I would offer the other cheek, I would give my cloak if my coat be taken. I pray to God only not to take from me the bless of forgiveness.'" ~Alexey Alexandrovitch, Anna Karenina Books from this episode:             .    Links from this episode: Intro to Principles I: Natural Law     Intro to Principles II: First Principles Intro to Principles III: Principles

Some people just add spark to life. My friend Deborah Coty is one fireball of energy. Her best-selling Too Blessed to Be Stressed series encapsulates a bit of her spirit, and this interview will give you a glimpse into her amazing dream tending heart. A few minutes with this woman will refresh and revive you.  Deborah dreamed as a child of writing a book. She was what she calls a “rabid reader” devouring every story she could get her hands on. Christy by Catherine Marshall particularly inspired and captured Deborah’s attention. She read that one book about twelve times in six months. It changed her way of viewing herself. It changed her way of viewing God. It changed her way of viewing life. And she felt a spark of hope that she too, might some day help other people through writing books, the way that single story had helped her. For the next thirty-six years, her writing consisted of preparing medical charts and penning an annual family Christmas newsletter. But at forty-five years old, just as her youngest child was getting ready to fly the coop, leaving Deb’s nest empty, she felt as if she was missing something. There was something she was supposed to be doing. She just couldn’t figure it out. But one day, as she was sitting in a dentist’s office, praying, she heard a still, small voice in her spirit speak two simple words. “It’s time.” She says in that moment, she knew exactly what she was supposed to do. She remembered that dream from so long ago . . . of writing. She took some crash courses on writing, and first concentrated on magazine articles. From there, she began to explore the possibility of writing books. Today, Deb’s Too Blessed to Be Stressed series has sold just under a million copies. She says she’s the poster child for the truth that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. And if you follow me at all, you know that makes her a woman after my own heart. Often, we feel as if our dream has been buried, but in reality, it’s been planted. There are things going on beneath the surface. There’s watering, the soil has be tilled, and we even require fertilizer.  The patience part is what can get to us. We want what we want and we want it now. But when we begin to realize that God is the one who planted our dreams in our hearts, and according to the Bible, He is willing to do exceedingly, abundantly more than we can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), our dreams can burst out of the darkness. When Deborah’s Too Blessed to Be Stressed books first released, they didn’t sell that well. But suddenly, the sleeper awoke. Deborah can’t explain exactly how it happened, but I think her consistent faith had much to do with it.   Filling Needs: Are the expectations you’re setting for yourself reasonable?  Are you over-complicating what God wants to do in your life? Have you asked Him what He wants to unearth in you? Are you allowing fears that you’re too poor, too young, too old, too stressed, or too anything to hold you back from pursuing your dreams? Work with what you have and realize that life is equipping you in preparation for your future dreams.   This episode’s Dream Tending Tips: Start where you are. Look around you. What’s going on? What experiences have you had? Who are the people who’ve influenced you? This is the fodder to help you tend your dreams.   Do something silly, unusual, or unrelated to your dreams to unleash your inner creativity. Consider what you’ve learned, what are the habits or disciplines that can help you tend your dreams? Be willing to learn and relearn, to practice and re-practice, so your skills are sharply honed. Listen to people’s complaints, but from a different perspective. What are you hearing that might be part of a greater plan for your life? Are you being called to do something based on patterns of complaint? Don’t discount what God wants to do with what you plant. Ask Him to show you what to seed. Don’t give up on your dreams too soon—don’t let them die—don’t kill them too early. Sometimes, it may appear as if our dreams are buried, but if we keep working the soil, watering, and fertilizing, then suddenly, new growth can burst from the ground. Leadership lessons from Dean Smith, applying faith-based principles while leading in a secular environment, the importance of failing and more!   Bio: When you think about leaders throughout the history of sports, it wouldn't take very long to get to University of North Carolina Men's Basketball Coach Dean Smith. And today, we have a guest with us who not only played for Coach Smith, but has become an extraordinary leader in his own right. David Chadwick is the senior pastor at Forest Hill Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, a church that has grown to over 6,000 congregants on multiple campuses since he first arrived in 1980. He hosts a weekly radio show, and is also the author of: “It's How You Play The Game – The 12 Leadership Principles of Dean Smith,” as well as his newest book: “Hearing the Voice of God.” David and his wife Marilynn have three children and four grand-children. Interview: Let's get the important things out of the way first: how do you expect the Tar Heels to do this season? Three starters back and three reserves back, so should be pretty good Freshman Tony Bradley is expected to be great We have a relatively young audience, many of whom didn't have the opportunity to observe Dean Smith while he was still coaching. Can you tell us about him both as a man and as a coach? Began at UNC in 1962 Lost a lot early; student body wanted him gone twice Brought in a great class in '65, including the first African-American player at UNC and in the ACC – Charlie Scott; Coach felt program integration was important based on his Christian beliefs Led to three straight final fours in '66-69 The 70s were huge with great players before winning his first NCAA title in 1982 with Michael Jordan Won the title again in '93, before retiring in ‘97 ESPN studied the greatest coaches (all sports) between 1975 and 2000, and Dean Smith was #1 Won more against Coach K than Coach K did against him Won 879 games, two national titles, Olympic Gold Medal (1976), NIT title Let's talk about your book It's How You Play The Game. Since we won't have time to go into all 12 principles, could you mention each of them here at the top so our listeners know what we're leaving out if they want to go get the book and fill in the gaps. Be loyal, Provide a family environment, Be a friend forever, Put the team before the individual, Be flexible with your vision, Get better, and the team gets better, Speak positive words, Pass on what you know, Be a person of good character, Make failure your friend, Know who really is in control, Commit yourself for the long haul Three overarching core principles People are first Mark 10:45 – “Son of man didn't come to be served but to serve.” Coach Smith gave himself to his players Creating family environment Example with starting point guard accused of some trouble; Coach played him and kept him in the game even though he didn't play well at all. Lost the game and was okay with that in order to build up that player. Be Loyal (p. 31-32) I was struck by Ademola Okulaja's quote when talking about how Coach Smith would encourage players who were ready to go ahead and leave, even though the team would take a short term hit: “It's different here…coaches really do put us number one…Many programs squeeze the players out like an orange and then throw them away. But there is respect and honor here…therefore, there is a certain obligation not to let each other down.” Talk if you would about that culture Ademola is highlighting. Coach Smith always said if IBM offered you $10M for three years I would say go and set yourself up for life, and then come back for your degree. He encouraged players to do what was best for them, even though it would hurt the team in the short term But that created loyalty from the players to the coach, and the team was better, and he was able to recruit other players Provide a family environment (p. 57) – Could you tell us a bit about the relationship between Coach Smith and Pat Sullivan, as it pertains to Pat's father? Michael Jordan quote – “Other than my parents, there is no one bigger influence in my life than Coach Smith.” Pat's father was an alcoholic and was not part of Pat's life But when his father was going through a difficult time and Pat was struggling with whether to help him out, Coach Smith encouraged him to do so; to love his dad even if it wasn't earned Put the team before the individual – In some ways this may seem to contradict some of the prior discussion about championing the wishes of the individual players (i.e. going pro early). Can you talk about how those two work together? Not a contradiction Overarching core value is people are first, but then also the team is first If he gives loyalty to the individual, they know it is there, and then they play harder than ever for the team Empowering the individuals create such a loyalty among the players that they play harder for him and go through a brick wall (follow-up) re: taking standing by your players to far? Leads to third overarching core value – character first Believes that a person's name is more valuable than anything else Must honor God before anything else Not afraid to fail Extreme humility Would never operate in a way that would impugn his character or his faith in God that would make God look bad; so when confronted with those tough situations, he would work it out in a way to support his player but do so in an open/honest way; this would teach the player to operate with character as well Make failure your friend – Talk a bit about how Coach Smith viewed failure, but also if you could share some of the personal story you tell in the book about the transition you attempted at your church. In third overarching core value of character first, he though one of the ways character was formed was through failure Believed failure only bad if you didn't get back up and learn from it 1964 team – question was whether Coach Smith would make it through the season. He said your reputation is what other people think of you; your character is what you think of yourself; Coach Smith then went home and read “Beyond Ourselves” by Catherine Marshall. Much of life is out of our control When he realized he couldn't control how others thought of his coaching, it was profound, and all he could do was trust God through failures, and trust the results would come. And think about that it was 18 years from 1964 to his first national title in 1982…so that is long time of living by faith and through failures before seeing the ultimate goal achieved. When David led his church through a transition: Hear your people, learn from them, keep moving forward Celebrate the process once completed Make failure your friend; only a problem if you refuse to get up again Know who really is in control This may be a tough one for many of our Type A leaders out there. Walk us through what this looks like. Focus on process and not outcomes Day-in/day-out disciplines, principles and choices If you do the right thing over and over again, trust God with the outcome Avoid the snare to compare How should our faith impact or influence how we lead, particularly in a secular organization? Jesus is the example If you are one of his followers, we are called to follow/imitate him Mark 10: 35-45 – when James and Mark asked to sit at his right hand; Jesus told them to serve John 13: 1-13 – when disciples are arguing over who is the greatest; Jesus came in and washed their feet (served them) Jesus submitting himself to his Father by coming to earth as a human man in order to serve Our call is to use our position to serve people and help them to be the fullness of Christ in their positions and their jobs as best you can; to wash their feet; to discover their gift and help them succeed in that gift They will then want to work hard for you to help the organization be the best it can be You have a new book out Hearing the Voice of God. Why did you write the book and what can we expect from it? Purpose is to use the gospel of John as a daily devotional to hear the voice of God Best way to know whether God is speaking to you is through his Word Divided the book into a four month devotional Reflection of David's heart Help people sit down and listen to God each day. Do you have any habits or routines that have been key to your success? Daily protocol that builds healthy habits Habit of hope in your heart is key David's morning routine Exercise/job – just 30 minutes means a lot Quiet time – 30 minutes with the Lord; reading scripture; what is this saying? What is it saying specifically to me? Breakfast This creates physical, spiritual and mental health (follow up – Daniel asking about whether David is the ringer on the staff basketball team) Where can people go to learn more about you and where can they pick up the books? REFLECTION QUOTES “God is the only one who can make the valley of trouble a door of hope.” ~Catherine Marshall (1914-1983), American author “Now, faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” ~Hebrews 11:1 “The road that is built in hope is more pleasant to the traveler than the road built in despair, even though they both lead to the same destination.” ~Marion Zimmer Bradley, The Fall of Atlantis “Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.” ~Alexander Pope, 18th century English poet “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” ~Epicurus, ancient Greek philosopher “I have come to accept the feeling of not knowing where I am going. And I have trained myself to love it. Because it is only when we are suspended in mid-air with no landing in sight, that we force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight. And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to. But the miracle is in the unfolding of the wings. You may not know where you're going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you.” ~C. JoyBell C., Contemporary author SERMON PASSAGE 1 John 2:28-3:3 (NASB) 28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him. Chapter 3 1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
