Late on a summer night in 1966, a cop put his hands on a customer at a popular gathering space for trans women and drag queens. Coffee was thrown in his face, and a riot erupted right there at Compton's Cafeteria in the Tenderloin. This moment was one of the first documented acts of LGBTQ+ resistance in the country. For the past year, an immersive play called The Compton's Cafeteria Riot has been bringing audiences into the historic event as diners inside the cafeteria. The play is produced by the Tenderloin Museum. One of its co-writers, Donna Persona, is a trans rights activist, and Mary Vice is an actor turned drag queen in the play. They spoke to KALW's Jeneé Darden, host of the Sights and Sounds show. Here's an excerpt from their conversation.
Latest Beacon venue hosts its first shows Around 25 years ago, as gentrification creeped in, stickers and graffiti emerged in Texas urging people to "Keep Austin Weird." Going for a punk aesthetic, an early version of the poster promoting the triple bill on Saturday (May 30) at The Cafeteria, a new venue in Beacon, shows a singer with a mohawk wearing a Dead Boys shirt. Two slogans adorn the bottom quadrant: "Keep Beacon Weird" echoes the call in Austin and "Hot Lunch Lives" nods to the space's former role as a high school cafeteria. It's now occupied by Clutter Gallery, which manufactures collectible designer toys and recently moved from Main Street. The old high school is home to the KuBe Art Center, and the event is homegrown. Happy Valley Arcade Bar brings food and drink. Gavin Hecker booked the bands under the new Prophecy Lab brand that differentiates his live music arm from Prophecy Hall, the former church on the west side of town. The Cafeteria holds 150 people and will host music shows twice a month, says Clutter co-owner Josh Kimberg. On May 30, alt-rock combo Monski opens for guitarist Jeffrey Lewis, coming from New York City. A veteran of the Austin music scene, he crossed paths with Ed Hamell, who is playing at Lucky Dog in Beacon today (May 29). The troubadours convey clever lyrics with simple but emphatic chords. Lewis also hobnobbed with Daniel Johnston, an influential Austin musician who received a modicum of fame after someone photographed Kurt Cobain wearing a shirt depicting the cover of his 1983 album Hi, How Are You. It featured an abstract drawing of a frog, dubbed Jeremiah the Innocent. Johnston, who died in 2019, was a friend of Ron English, another local designer-toy artist. Kimberg is working with Johnston's estate to create works related to the figure. Also on the Saturday bill is Nick Yulman and the Bricolo Mechanical Band, housed in his basement at the foot of Mount Beacon. Active in the automated music circuit, he's played gigs at the New York Botanical Garden, the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Composer Angelica Negron has written several pieces that incorporate his contraptions for the Sö Percussion ensemble, which has performed twice for the Howland Chamber Music Circle. Yulman's works are heavy on thuds, chimes and disembodied vocals. Sounds emanating from a modified keyboard — along with an analog vibraphone and percussion instruments — are triggered by a computer program that operates jury-rigged solenoids (valves with plungers). One rig can play every key on his modified reed organ; other controllers manipulate drumsticks and pedals on command. At the show, Yulman will sing and play guitar to accompany the robots. The set-up includes wooden boxes that he hangs around the room, adding an element "that alters the sound depending on where you stand," he says. "You can mix your own experience by moving around." Tracks are layered so thick that he laughs when asked how many a typical composition contains. Onscreen, the MIDI keyboard's programming panel looks like the paper rolls with cutouts from player pianos of the early 1900s. "Mechanical music isn't new," he says. "But triggering weird sounds on my laptop didn't move me. This is a lot more fun." The Cafeteria is located at the Clutter Gallery, 20 Kent St., in Beacon. Tickets for the May 30 show are $20 ($25 door). See dub.sh/cafeteria-5-30.

What happens when a white foster-to-adopt family adopts a Black teenager in a small rural community with very little diversity? In this deeply honest and thought-provoking episode of From Foster to Forever, Rachel talks with foster and adoptive mom Kat Parvin about transracial adoption through foster care, parenting adopted teens, navigating racism in schools, and the realities of raising a Black daughter in a predominantly white town.Kat shares how her family's foster care journey quickly turned into adoption after welcoming a 13-year-old girl into their home. But alongside the joy of becoming a forever family came difficult questions about racial identity, white privilege, trauma-informed parenting, and how white adoptive parents can better support Black children growing up in white spaces. The conversation explores the emotional complexity of foster adoption, the guilt many adoptive parents feel, and the importance of listening to adoptee voices and continuing to learn — even when it's uncomfortable.Rachel and Kat also discuss:foster care disruptionadopting older children and teensbullying and racism in schoolstrauma and emotional regulationparenting children from hard placessupporting adopted children through identity developmentbalancing the needs of biological and adopted childrenfoster parenting while working full-timecreating community and mentorship for transracially adopted childrenwhy representation matters in adoptive familiesKat opens up about the backlash she received online after posting about her adoption day and how that experience pushed her deeper into learning about transracial adoption, anti-racism, and culturally responsive parenting. This episode is an important listen for:foster parentsadoptive parentswhite adoptive parentstrauma-informed caregiversfamilies considering foster-to-adoptparents raising adopted teensanyone interested in foster care, adoption, racial identity, and transracial parentingResources MentionedDo Right By Me: Learning to Raise Black Children in White SpacesHow to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. In Episode #40, we offer some teacher quick takes on that universal part of everyone's school experience: lunch in the cafeteria. Ms. Compton, Mr. Rose and your host spent some time in the studio reminiscing over our own histories with school cafeterias of our pasts, and then we recently spent a lunch period gathered at one of round tables in the Borah Cafeteria, paid our 5 dollars and 10 cents, gobbled down our crispy chicken salads, and contemplated meal time at this school. and you'll get to hear all about those experiences. You'll also hear Mr. Rose's Prep Period Cold Call with Borah's Food Service Manager, Mrs. Chipman, who offers some fascinating insights on the daily routine of feeding Borah's students. You'll also find out that once all the kids are gone and tables wiped off, Borah's cafeteria becomes a cool venue for other events here at the school Thanks for listening! These are Borah Voices!

On this day, 22 April 1944, 200 young Black people, mostly students at Howard University, held a sit-in demonstration at Thompson's, a segregated restaurant in Washington DC – where Jim Crow laws were not in effect but segregation by custom existed. After effectively slashing the number of paying customers, the restaurant was ordered by its headquarters to begin serving Black customers. The University, in fear of losing federal grants, subsequently directed its students to cease direct action and Thompson's promptly restored segregation. One of the key organisers of the action was Pauli Murray, pictured, a young student and activist, who identified as part male and part female, and whose romantic relationships were with women.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/9444/thompson's-cafeteria-sit-inOur work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon. Our past explains why certain foods, routines, and rules still run our choices today, from junk food access to clean-plate pressure and diet talk at home. We connect those childhood “echoes” to adult cravings, food guilt, and rebellion eating, then talk through how to rewire rewards and pass on healthier cues to the next generation. • Childhood food environments shaping adult eating patterns • Junk food access and how parents set the tone • Clean-your-plate rules and trouble stopping at comfortably full • Food preferences tied to restriction and nostalgia • Cafeteria memories linking food with excitement and comfort • Snacks, routines, and timing that persist for decades • Scarcity thinking and learning to eat fast • Diet culture at home creating perfectionism and guilt • Rebellion eating after gaining adult freedom • Swapping food rewards for rest, walks, and other supports • Noticing what we model for kids and grandkids If you have any thoughts, comments, or questions, let me know.https://aarondegler.com/

This episode examines how Raymond Matzker assumed the identity of William T. Boerum and used it to secure jobs, credentials, and professional standing across multiple states. As the deception went unchecked, the stolen identity became a shield behind which far more serious crimes were committed. Through firsthand recollections and reporting, the story traces how the fraud unfolded, why it was never properly challenged, and how institutional failures allowed devastating consequences to follow. Then we turn to a different kind of deficit: America’s growing social isolation. The Barnes Family Foundation, based in Bethlehem, has released its first Social Connection in America report — a sweeping look at how connected (or disconnected) people feel today. The findings are stark: disengagement is widespread, and certain groups — including people with lower incomes, less education, those who have never married, LGBTQ+ individuals, and some racial and ethnic communities — are especially at risk of social isolation. Yet, in a hopeful counterpoint, 72% of Americans still report a sense of belonging in their neighborhoods. We had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, esteemed psychologist, scholar, and higher-education leader, about her upcoming visit to Dickinson College for Black History Month. Dr. Tatum will join Tony Boston, Dickinson’s chief diversity officer, and Jacquie Forbes, assistant professor of educational studies, for a conversation titled “The Psychology of Belonging: Navigating Identity on a College Campus.” Inspired by her New York Times bestselling book, Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race, Tatum discussed how social identities are formed, the importance of fostering inclusion and psychological safety, and the ongoing challenges facing higher-education leaders.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Big Rich, TD and Fletch take a nostalgic (and slightly traumatic) trip back to middle school cafeteria food—breaking down the best bites and, more importantly, the absolute worst offenders. Then the gang gets ready to introduce Foghat tonight at the Belly Up in Solana Beach… except Big Rich already showed up. He was only 24 hours early.
(00:00:00) First, we visit the Center for Post Natural History, a one‑of‑a‑kind museum dedicated to documenting the living organisms that have been intentionally altered by humans, from early agricultural domestication to cutting‑edge genetic engineering. Since 2008, the Center has sparked public dialogue about our growing role as evolutionary agents, using exhibitions, workshops, and multimedia storytelling to illuminate the profound entanglement between human culture and the natural world. Featured by outlets like WESA, WHYY, BBC World Service, National Geographic, and Science Friday, the Center challenges us to rethink what “nature” even means in the 21st century. (00:22:39) Then, we shift from biological evolution to social identity with Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, renowned psychologist, bestselling author, and former president of Spelman College. Ahead of her Black History Month appearance at Dickinson College, Tatum joins us to discuss belonging, identity formation, and the institutional work required to create inclusive, psychologically safe learning environments. Drawing from her landmark book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? and her newest work, Peril and Promise, she reflects on the pressures facing higher‑education leaders and the urgent need for communities that support all students. There has been a buffet of discussion as pre-packed food for students have been in the spotlight recently. Some schools have had to turn to prepared meals from centralised kitchens because of shrinking student numbers and a lack of canteen stallholders. But this has not been to everyone’s taste. Bento boxes from airline caterer SATS made the news after pictures of unappetising servings at Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) surfaced online in early January. It prompted a flurry of discussion both on and offline, as everyone weighed in with their thoughts from the colour of the boxes – turquoise – to the dishes served to what pre-packed meals takes away from the recess experience. The media was later invited to HCI to taste the food and speak to students, who gave reviews about the SATS pre-packed meals. The school’s principal said the menus will be refined, and SATS will relook recipes and food presentation. Then on Jan 14, concerns emerged over food safety after 60 primary school pupils came down with suspected food poisoning after consuming food prepared by Gourmetz, the school’s caterer. In this week’s episode of The Usual Place, I chat with two canteen stall operators, Ms Nurkusmawati Kasim, who runs a Western food stall in a primary school, and Ms Grace Lim, who operates a snack stall in a primary and secondary school, about their experience providing meals for students. Jalan Besar GRC MP Shawn Loh, who is the group managing director of food conglomerate Commonwealth Capital Group, joins us to discuss whether there are alternatives to the central kitchen model. Alice Waters opened her iconic Berkeley, California restaurant Chez Panisse 54 years ago, introducing the concept of farm-to-table eating to Americans and only serving local, seasonal produce at peak ripeness. She’s also a food activist, and through The Edible Schoolyard Project, has spent the past 30 years showing schools how to integrate locally farmed, organic produce into their cafeterias. On today’s episode, Alice shares two life-changing experiences that inspired her to open her restaurant; what diners thought about being served two figs for dessert in Chez Panisse’s early days; how schools can afford to serve kids farm fresh food; and what she packed in her own daughter’s lunchbox. And we take a peak inside her her new cookbook, A School Lunch Revolution. Then the Director of Nutrition Services for California’s Sweet Water Union High School district joins the show to talk about how he flipped the district’s lunch program on its head, buying more than half of the food from local farmers and producers or having the students grow it themselves. Then he’s joined by college football reporter Ross Dellenger to tell the real story behind Lane Kiffin’s dog “Juice” — how a golden retriever became a sideline star, what’s true, what’s myth, and why the whole thing was a great PR stunt from Ole Miss over the years. Finally, former NFL wide receiver Allen Robinson stops by to talk about league life, from locker rooms to playbooks to the very important question: which team actually had the best cafeteria food? Hospitals were once the epicenter of healthcare food service. One kitchen fed thousands, one cafeteria served everyone from physicians to visitors, and one model defined the experience. That era is ending. As care moves beyond the hospital walls into outpatient clinics, ambulatory centers, imaging hubs, and patients' homes, food service needs to move with it. What once was a static operation is becoming a dynamic, distributed network designed to keep up with an always-on health system.
